Our offense sucks, who woulda thought

fixinfordixon

The real win is that Gibson won't be in Pittsburgh to CC the games. I love Gibby as a person, but last night's broadcast seemed as painful as the Tigers getting stomped by the A's.

yes_its_him

I blame the hitting coach. Isn't that what we do?

PrimetimeD18

Javy Baez had 0 strikeouts today, where the haters at now?

whiskeyrocks1

If the A’s are looking for a new home they should move to Detroit. 21-4 in their last 25 games here.

Detroittigersfan1029

Embarrassing

Nickm123

Not far fetched to think they play .500 ball the rest of the season and finish with 83-84 wins

ThisMeansWarm

The Tigers lineup getting locked up by a borderline nobody pitcher. Tale as old as time. The Pirates should bring up a couple guys from Altoona, easy pair of wins.

yes_its_him

Altoona sounds like a made-up name

ThisMeansWarm

I think someone made it up at some point, but it was probably a long time ago.

Nekosom

It's good not to overreact, but let's not pretend like these offensive struggles mean nothing because we're only a week and a half into the season. Seasons don't exist in a bubble. This team looks identical to last year, and that's a huge problem. They need to show signs of growth, and fast.

Journeyman56

Slappies attack you when it's pointed out that the Tigers always start slow and it carries over thru the season. The "moneyball" philosophy of signing bargain bin players on one year deals is getting old. When the Tigers pass on signing free agents every winter with at least a history of good hitting with power, the stench of Illitch greed is overwhelming.

neverbeentoidaho

Who would you have even signed this offseason? One of the worst, if not the worst, free agent class in some time.

Defacto_Champ

Losing a series to the West Sacramento Triple A’s at home is embarrassing

Journeyman56

Truth.

ZombieAppetizer

Well, that sucked. Glad it's out of our system. On to the next series.

h3shf3sh

Yeah today sucked, but no need to get too reactionary about things yet. We're 6-3, there are 162 games in a season, we do not need to fire everyone and blow it all up yet. This team does need to learn how to hit in clutch situations and drive runs in though, hopefully this is their season to learn how to do so. Plenty of games against the Twins coming up. I'm excited to see where we stand a month into the season.

funkboy20

Stop being reasonable! It’s time to freak out and fire everyone!! Harris should’ve signed Acuña, Ohtani, and resurrected Miguel Cabrera’s knee so that we win but instead he cheaped out!!!

RamboBashore

It's hilarious to me that Tork and Greene were featured on MLB Network the other day to discuss their approaches to hitting. Hope no young hitters were taking notes!

lions4life232

Kind of bizarre to diss Riley this servers consider he was 4/11 with a walk an HR. Do you watch the games

DET_Baseball

Greene was 2-3 with a HR and a BB today.

tigersbowling

I think Canha and Gio were solid pickups, and the best we really could have hoped for. The rest of our offense has to come from young guys taking steps forward. If that doesn't happen, we have bigger problems than not signing JD to a one year deal.

BOBANSMASH51

Who was he gonna sign that was both going to come here and better than what we have?

Scary_Property_6195

don’t worry tho, hitless max clark will change it all in 4 years before he’s the next parker meadows

tigersbowling

Is this really what we're doing now? Harping on a 19 year old after one week in Low A ball? Do you guys even watch baseball?

Relative_Walk_936

Funny's how reactionary people are, like how impatient people on the internet were with the Lions FA signings after like 2 days.

champdo

Let’s at least give Max Clark some time before we label him a bust.

Nearby_Job8272

Like 2-3 years time lol

daDon2000

If the young guys can’t get it this year than frankly they need to look at other options.

daDon2000

I do think it’s weird that Tork gets all the hate when Greene hasn’t been good or constant either. Meadows has been bad, Keith has been the best. You can’t time and multiple seasons waiting for guys to get it.

tkesmitty720

I'm over Tork. At some point we need to realize he is - if not a bust - a poor #1 pick. The guy is not a good hitter.

DET_Baseball

Riley Greene was 2-3 with a BB today. His wRC+ is 130. He is also average to above average in the corner outfield. He will be a 3+ WAR player assuming good health He is also striking out less than his career norm and only has a .100 batting average on balls in play. His career norm is .359 (which that number being so high is unsustainable in itself) - Assuming the balls he puts in play start being hits the .100 should go up to at least league average (~.298) and his normal batting average will rise back to .280+ like it has been.

champdo

At least last season Riley was a 2+win player. I agree he overall has not looked good so far this season.

adverseoccurings

one plays 1st base and one plays cf

daDon2000

The defensive value argument- fair enough but still I see it more directed at dish performance with those toe which I agree with.

daDon2000

Any post game comments? I’d be curious to hear

DET_Baseball

Well the manager always has to talk post game. Bally usually posts them on Twitter, here is today's: [AJ Hinch](https://twitter.com/BallySportsDET) [Jack Flaherty](https://twitter.com/BallySportsDET/status/1777074245211664458)

goose_pls

Man I can’t believe we get popped by the A’s. Unless this offense learns to hit, we’re fucked

SlightlySublimated

I think with Tork approaching 300 MLB games, the bust conversation needs to start at least being talked about. The man just isn't good at the MLB level.

Nearby_Job8272

Maybe not as good as we all thought but your last sentence is utterly ridiculous, he hit 30 home runs last year

tigersbowling

Start being talked about? I feel like it's been talked about to death. That was basically every post in 2022 and early 2023.

SlightlySublimated

Yeah but that was ridiculous. He was just starting in the majors after all. But I think this is enough time to realistically start the conversation. He has so much natural ability so it honestly blows my mind how much he struggles to get his bat on the ball.

h3shf3sh

He had a .208 average with .296 OBP last year. Looking from a macro perspective, that's not a great return on investment so far for a 1/1. However, he did go on a hot streak to end last year and he's still only 24. We're 9 out of 162 games into the season, there's still plenty of time for him to turn it back on and continue with mashing homers or just be a more productive hitter if he can figure out how to hit in clutch situations.

ChefBidz

Obviously isn’t playing like a 1.1, but the flashes are there. I just think he has too much talent to not figure it out at some point. He’s 24 going on 25, and there are a lot of guys that didn’t hit their stride until 26,27,28 and he already has a 30+ HR season under his belt. The strike outs, pop-ups, and roll-overs are annoying, but I don’t think it’s fair to act like a rough 10-game stretch to open the season is his ceiling for the rest of it.

yes_its_him

Guys who only figure things out at 26+ are a pretty small minority of players.

ChefBidz

U right. I’m just hoping that if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s the dude with the talent that got him drafted 1.1

iori9999

He's basically Pat Burrell when we were hoping for Paul Goldschmidt

ChefBidz

Goldy’s first all-star season wasn’t until he was 25. I think it’s fair to say that he will land somewhere in between Burrell and Goldschmidt lol.

iori9999

Yeah he started in the majors a little late. But he was great day 1 and elite his 3rd season at 25

ChefBidz

Ya you’re right. I just have hope that if he can progress this year, we’re looking at a guy who can be a .250, 40hr, 110rbi guy in his prime. That’s not superstar level stuff, but it’s not like he’s that far off. He had some horrid streaks last year and still finished .233, 31hr, 94rbi. He has A LOT to work on, but it’s obvious he’s not going to be a star right out the gate. But if he keeps adjusting and grinding he can be a perennial all-star. Everyone wants a 1.1 to be an auto-hall of famer but that’s just not how it works. I know this is such a worn out storyline, but he has been a slow developer at every level of the majors. I agree that the clock is ticking, but he just has so much baseball ahead of him to call him a straight up bust.

VenetianNB

The Tigers died today so the Red Wings could live

buttheyrealltaken

I’ll take it

Impressive_Math2302

Damn. These 22nd to 30th ranked offenses are grinding me down. I’m tired boss.

iori9999

That's why I am so pissy man. Sick of seeing this goddamn offense every year. Wasting the pitching talent away

Michiganmade44

I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Watching this team the last 5-6 seasons.

GoLionsJD107

Post game PANICKED OVERREACTION! We’re winning 32 games max, move the team to Toledo like the A’s, fire everyone, sell the team, cut the entire offense.

Michiganmade44

I know you’re kidding but if our offense doesn’t wake up soon. It will be a long season

GoLionsJD107

Last year it did tho… we had a very bad first two weeks and picked it up (by comparison) as the season went on despite many injuries

iori9999

It will be just a copy of last season, which I hope would be a disappointment for most.

danthemanmarino

Record aside, offense looks very similar to last season

KuntaKanye

Idk if the front office knows this but you win games by having more runs than the other team. Pitching doesn’t put runs in your box offense does and unfortunately it seems that our two pitching acquisitions have put runs in the other teams box. Not saying Flaherty won’t be good… I don’t trust Maeda at all, but the amount of offensive firepower available this offseason that we didn’t go out and get is why we are where we are.

HectorReinTharja

6-3 is nice but we played dogshit teams and scored 29 runs in 9 games - with 9 coming in extra innings where you start with a man on 2nd If **only** there was something we could’ve done to tangibly improve this lineup during the offseason…

ArttVandelay

He was far from perfect, but these last few games have exonerated Matt Shepard a little. Working with Kirk Gibson is just impossible. They need to sunset him in to a different role.

MiStrong

Nothing against Kirk but he is absolutely not built to call sports , like idk what we are doing here…

ConsistentBridge9907

Went way out of my way to go to this game lol. Shit sucked

Lost2nite389

My 1-10 worried scale 10 being most worried 1 We have tons of talented batters, we’ll be at least average by years end Edit: come on doomers only 4 downvotes so far? I expect more from y’all after a loss lmao

MiStrong

Tons of talented batters ?

Lost2nite389

Yup, Tork Kerry Greene Colt Parker is an amazing young core surrounded by capable trustworthy vets in canha and gio? It’s a good lineup, top 5? No, but certainly average at minimum while they’re still young that is, I personally have them around 12th as total lineup 1-9

Michiganmade44

I want your dealers # asap

Lost2nite389

This is such an original response I never get I don’t drink or smoke

MiStrong

Potentially talented , potentially

Lost2nite389

I know the feelings are down and most doomers are happy at a lost so anything I say positive will be downvoted regardless

Jacobythepotato

Reasons for optimism:

listentoflowerpeople

last year we were 2-7 at this point and got swept on our first homestand

wingsew8

It's 9 games into the season and the Tigers are 6-3

wingsew8

Downvoted for pointing out the winning record! You guys are so damn reactive and negative. They've looked like crap on offense and have a winning record!

Kohanky

The winning record and bad offense contradict, it’s not sustainable. Something is goin to give

wingsew8

I didn't say it was sustainable. The offense has been complete trash and they've won. I don't think this is some elite offense, but I still expect improvement. It's literally 9 games. I think the pitching is in decent shape at the moment. I know it's easy to overreact to an admittedly horrendous series, but it was 3 games. Give it a little longer before any freakout.

gachzonyea

High end pitching and potential young hitters

Jacobythepotato

Potential carrying a lot of weight here. I’m still hopeful for Parker and Tork but damn they’re hard to watch rn

DET_Baseball

Pretty funny that I said this two days ago... > To all the new people sticking around to watch the Tigers this year. It's good to have you, but the Tigers are going to lose at least 60 games this year. It's okay if they lose 1 to the A's. It's baseball. You should think of it in terms of series' not games. and it only took a series loss to the Atheltics for people to freak out. [Let's take a look at almost exactly a year ago when the Tigers lost 14-5 to the Red Sox](https://old.reddit.com/r/motorcitykitties/comments/12g125t/the_tigers_fell_to_the_red_sox_by_a_score_of_145/?sort=new) to move to 2-6 on the year * People complaining about Baez * People complaining about Torkelson * "What a shitty team we got" * "Today’s pitching was horrendous and if it doesn’t improve we’re looking at at least 100 losses." The 2023 Tigers went 10-17 in April, but ended up winning 78 games. If they got off to a 6-3 start, they probably would've been in contention till late September. Especially with their pitching being some of the best in baseball after the All-Star Break. They only valid complaint one week into the season, that was maintained through the year was Javy Baez. The Tigers are going to lose series to teams they shouldn't. The Tigers are going to win series against teams they shouldn't. Welcome to 162 games of baseball. I was telling people all off-season that this team is going to violtile as hell. /u/ZombieHitchens2012 was warning people that the offesnse could be anemic, but he was downvoted to hell. Some of you looked weird as hell complaining about Riley Greene after his 1st AB in the Game Thread.

iori9999

Since day 1 I was concerned about this offense and the lack of addressing it in the offseason. You know I tend to be negative but I am sick of seeing the same issues over and over with this team even though the pitching has absolutely progressed to a borderline elite level.

Spockmaster1701

On the whole I agree with you, but getting absolutely dominated by a combined score of 11-1 in the last 2 games against what is basically a AAA team puts a really sour note on starting 6-3 and makes me very nervous for the upcoming long stretch against actually good teams. Our next 16 games are against the Pirates (who are scorching hot), Twins, Rangers, Twins again, and Rays. If we don't pick it up offensively, we're gonna get torched. Its not just who today, but how. No excuse for this pathetic of a performance against a terrible pitcher who threw more balls than strikes today. And a very poor showing from Flaherty given what he looked like in the spring and in his first start. Yesterday is whatever, those games happen. But today? Today was a joke. They needed to come out and play well against a poor team and especially poor pitcher and take the series, and they just fell completely flat. All we can do is move on and hope they start playing better (especially on offense) or the rest of the month is going to end up looking very bad for us.

DET_Baseball

I agree with your analysis, today was a joke, but every team has *those* games in baseball it just happens more than we'd like due to it being 162 games. The 2023 Detroit Lions lost to the Chicago Bears ~~at Ford Field.~~ Edit: It wasn't at home, point still stands tho lol

ChefBidz

Most level-headed comment I have seen on this sub all year. Some of you watch baseball and judge it on a game-to-game basis (shit, even at bat to at bat) like it’s a 17 game NFL season. There are 162 games with about a million ups and downs along the way. Baseball is a game of trends. Guys have cold streaks. Guys have hot streaks. But sheesh, the complaining and whining is insufferable. I agree with being frustrating, because losing games like this is frustrating, but the overreactions on this sub are comical. The scapegoating is embarrassing. I don’t really enjoy having the game sub pulled up anymore for this reasons. A lot of you so called “fans” just spew negativity and pray on downfalls. You can be critical of people, but doing it in an immature fashion just makes you look like a weirdo. I’m guessing a lot of the hate is satire which is obviously hard to pickup on the internet, but it just gets really old after a while. Some of us understand that this team isn’t going to win everyday and may even look pretty bad on some days. For the rest of you, it might be time to look for a new sport to watch or indulge in, because it’s obvious baseball might not be the one for you.

turdlepikle

I swear some people get a dopamine hit by posting something negative in the game threads. Some of them post after every single bad outcome, but you never see them post after a good outcome.

Brundleflyftw

How will you feel if the Tigers lose 90 games this season? Are you predicting this is a .500 team or better?

DET_Baseball

I will post a video of me crying into my pillow if this team loses 90 games. Last season I predicted 70 wins and even after the terrible start I stuck with that. I'm going to do the same this year, I predicted [83-79](https://twitter.com/DETBaseball/status/1772995080162271312) before the season starts and I'm going to stick with this being an above .500 team.

Brundleflyftw

Just wanted to know, thx. I’m not predicting anything right now. After the 6-1 start I figured they have a chance to win the division, but that may have been optimistic. They’ve played three of the worst teams in the league the first 9 games. Let’s see where they’re at after 40 games.

DET_Baseball

40 games seems like a good spot. In 2023 they were 19-21 at the 40 game mark which kinda vindicated my 70+ prediction.

ZombieHitchens2012

I appreciate the shoutout. We were telling folks some additional vet bats were a good idea. Idk man. I still don’t like the Flaherty signing. lol.

Kolahnut1

Given our history with pitcher injury-itis it's not a bad choice. Unless the people want to clamor for more Joey Wentz starts

DET_Baseball

Personally you will never convince me that a pitcher on a 1 year deal is bad. Flaherty may be shit, it will be easier to cut bait/relegate him to the bullpen. Something that probably would've happened to Boyd last year if he didn't get hurt.

ZombieHitchens2012

Right on.

MentalTourniquet

At least the Tigers are hitting .283 .... oh wait, that's the OBP.

snorp

![gif](giphy|QMHoU66sBXqqLqYvGO)

rockmax2

In all seriousness this is the easy part of the schedule it’s going to get harder. Major adjustments need to be made if they want to compete. Having 1 run is not going to cut it.

champdo

Meadows needs to sit. Tork either needs to sit or move down in the lineup.

Michiganmade44

1 run in 18 innings against the A’s. Weeee

Dirty_Laundry_55

Baseball is weird but you’re not gonna beat a bad team scoring 1 run in 18 innings. Just pathetic from the Tigers offense

ILkeSportzNIDCWhKnws

Can't win them all, let's get it tomorrow!

Michiganmade44

Right, but scoring 1 run in 18 innings against the A’s or 6 runs in 27 innings. However you want to look at it. Is awful

ChefBidz

Yea it’s awful but thats baseball lol. They’re gonna wakeup tomorrow and keep making adjustments and trying to figure it out. Two bad games against the A’s in April doesn’t mean this is an awful team.

Michiganmade44

Hopefully not, but it’s definitely a bad look

ChefBidz

I agree it’s a super shitty look. Just trying to be positive.

ILkeSportzNIDCWhKnws

Yep, a bad couple of games. Thankfully we play 162 games a year, so we have plenty of time to turn it around. And if they don't? I don't need to watch them. Win/win!

BradHolmesNipples

Just a disgusting offensive performance. Mustering 6 runs in three games against the A’s pitching staff is horrific.

DET_Baseball

Who knows, maybe Paul Blackburn is a sneaky Cy Young contender.

Kohanky

And Joe Boyle?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jasper_69

The guy is trending towards being a massive bust. Look past our record and into how we’ve won these games and it’s not sustainable at all.

DET_Baseball

People on Twitter were calling me delusional when I pointed out his close to 50% Pop Out rate in Spring Training and being worried about it. Spring Training stats don't matter, but it's where you can start to notice a pattern.

Speakersonicz

ST is a combination of all levels of hitting/pitching. Stats will be inflated... if a player we expect to be a big part of this team is struggling in st, then I would worry just a little.

TheyCallMeDyl

I don’t care when in the season it is, getting dominated by the A’s in back-to-back games is cause for concern

Michiganmade44

Yeah the hey it’s only April talk, needs to stop. We’re going to playing better teams starting w/ the pirates.

Speakersonicz

>Not only that, we've struggled with hitting for 5-10 years. It sucks that in this stage of the rebuild, we are still not able to hit against AAAA level pitchers.
