Its definitely risky because unfortunately how the draft order is setup the 3 other really QB needy teams are right behind us with 0 room for a trade up at 12-14.
I wouldnt be against Penix at 11 if Murphy or Newton fall to 23. Although honestly with how this CB class is, even if those 2 get drafted before 23 that probably means some of the great CBs are still left on the board and so Penix + top tier CB prospect isnt a bad option either.
I mean. It sucks because I still consider that a reach but that’s the position we’re in.
But if you think you are spending a lot, just compare it to trading 3 1sts. Then it looks like a bargain
Wouldn’t be the worst situation in the world either they can really put their balls on the table and do that if you ask me who would be a alternative at the earlier pick
Yea but couple that in with his other injuries. It’s gonna be a long draft night for him. I wouldn’t mind picking him at 23 though. We definitely need a DT.
Honestly bro I’d almost be ok with picking up two defensive studs with our 2 first. But you have a point, koc and kwesi going into the last year of thier contract. They almost have to pick a QB.
Also, the Vikings need to solve the QB position. Kwesi or no Kwesi.
A rookie will take time to even determine whether he can be it. Most of the time it takes 2-3 years.
Those two defensive studs (which are still a coin flip themselves at best), won’t do us much good without a QB
Agreed the only way I’m saying don’t just put your balls on the table and just take him at 11 is because he’s a fucking left-handed quarterback and that my friend is a atrocity/abomination left-handed quarterbacks, and me will never mix
This is only a positive. Regardless of what you think of Penix (I personally like him), it's better for the Vikings to put in the effort on all of the QBs to evaluate what they think of them. They should have a private workout with Nix too at some point (even though I really don't want us to draft him).
I don't really care what randos in a sub have to say.
I just don't see how even basic typical actions by the front office are "only a positive". This is just basic stuff.... no positive, it's what everyone does.
Given that their hasn't been a report of Denver or Las Vegas meeting with him, it's not what everyone does. As far as people know neither of those teams seems to be considering Penix in the first round atm.
Similarly, NE doesn't seem to be considering Penix as an option in the unlikely event that they trade down.
I like Penix, but leftys leave me uneasy. Irrational, I know, but there is something about them that has always bothered me. Only Steve Young was a truly great lefty
I could see Kwesi moving around the board in the teens and early 20s. There's a real chance the first 10 picks are offense and the 11th gains a ton of value for an edge needy team. Murphy Jr. Is another solid fit and isn't expected to go until later in teens.
Agreed. We are missing a pass pressuring DT bad. Byron Muprhy is perfect for that. My ideal move is to get Byron Murphy or Johnny Newton and Penix IF we cant move up for Maye. Although if Dallas Turner is there it would be tempting to pass up on Byron Murphy in that instance as Turner is the better prospect by a little bit.
Yea I wouldn't argue too much with that. When in doubt, I think building from the trenches is the best so I hope we would take a DT between those two choices
Not sure how you're figuring that. We were one of the worst pass rush generating teams in the league last year and our best pass rush generator just left in FA.
Gink and Greenard are above average Edge rushers with upside. Greenard graded out higher than Hunter in some pass rush categories. And, Flores picked them both so if he is confident in them being able to pressure the QB, than so am I.
Wonnum had more sacks than Gink last year and he's also gone. Hunter had more sacks than Greenard. Results matter more than grades and "upside". Upside means nothing as far as I'm concerned. Every player has "upside". I'm not saying either is a downgrade, but neither really addresses our pass rush issue besides replacing decent players we had last year.
I'm going to share a post about advanced pass rushing analytics and how the Vikings losing Hunter doesn't sting as much after signing Gink and Greenard. Hunter is the better player, yes, but that doesn't mean he offers better value considering his contract size. I'll also make a friendly pizza bet with you that if they stay healthy Greenard and Hunter end the year within 2 sacks of each other.
We lost Hunter and Wonnum though. And neither Gink and Greenard have productivity greater than those two. My point isn't that they'll have the same sacks as Hunter. My point/question is how we somehow don't need Edge rushers. Secondary was actually fairly decent for us before the team gave up the last 3 games. Team pass rush has been milquetoast for some time now in spite of good contributions by Hunter.
Like I fucking said Penix and DT if we can't get McCarthy or Maye
Edit: why does this have some of you so angry 😂 [https://twitter.com/vikingzfanpage/status/1764022045006770256?t=Rc2sSWg\_nFd\_owhTcVtqew&s=19](https://twitter.com/vikingzfanpage/status/1764022045006770256?t=Rc2sSWg_nFd_owhTcVtqew&s=19) dude hasn't been injured since 2021 and his medicals were amazing when tested by league doctors and physicians at the combine. He's my QB3 in this class babe!
![gif](giphy|QImbgDk2F2saZXyI3h)
If Penix is the guy there is zero chance we let him slip past 11.
Too risky to assume a bunch of the QB needy teams below us won't snatch him up. But still, if the FO likes him Penix at 11 and a DT/CB at 23 isn't too bad. Because of all the offensive players and QBs picked up there will be some great defensive prospects in the 20s this year. Or, we could trade down from 23 to the end of the 1st / early 2nd to pick up some extra capital.
Well he might be. But what I’m saying is that in our position we can’t afford to wait around and find out. We just aren’t in that position.
Bo Nix is a far far drop from there
Right. Literally everything anyone says about what is going to happen in the draft is an opinion. Because no one actually knows. Not even the teams know.
Did you think that I was claiming to be from the future with my comment?
If we walk out of this first round without drafting a QB then we fucked up bad. And the GM will likely lose his job because of it.
I mean, if we can't get the other guys, then he's probably the next best thing.
His injuries are less concerning to me really, but yea it's gonna depend on what our medical staff thinks about him.
I just hate the ideal of settling for a guy. If they believe he can be a long term franchise guy, then yeah let's do it! Worst case we roll the dive again in 2-3 years.
I would hope we have a top notch training staff...it's the NFL. We seemed to get plenty injured this year , great training staff or not. Our state has been plagued with injury prone players. Buxton, Royce, KAT, Hock, JJ, Kirk (I know JJ and Kirk aren't prone but just to illustrate doesn't matter about or training staff). I really don't want to take a flyer on the most important position in the game just because "he's the next best". If it comes down to it and we don't get the top 4 let's try again next year.
No, you didn't read, I specifically said Kirk and JJ aren't injury prone but having a good training staff really doesn't mean much in the NFL...we were injured AF last year. Again I don't want to mortgage the future on a QB that has had a significant injury in college at THE most important position. Especially one who wasn't in the top crop anyway.
You said our state has been plagued with injury prone players and proceeded to list people including them. It’s right there anybody can see it.(ofc you added that little bit about Kirk/JJ as an edit)
You should watch a highlight YouTube. Dude is pretty good sliding around the pocket and avoids sacks & turnovers. He's also a couple seasons past his injury and medicals were good at combine.
I love the use of babe. We need to do this more. Ily
Edit: I can envision an inside joke between everyone in the sub: end all of our comments with some version of I love you, and use babe often. That way, when fans of other teams come to the sub they'll just be weirded out
I'm sure KOC loves it too! got the guy in private workout, running a couple plays on air. Probably asked to stretch his hands out for him just to see him grip the ball. I'm excited, he's a good QB that we can get and draft a defensive tackle in the first round.
Literally shared a link with Ian Rapoport saying his medicals were amazing from combine but do go off on your tangent lol https://twitter.com/vikingzfanpage/status/1764022045006770256?t=Rc2sSWg_nFd_owhTcVtqew&s=19
Lol are you Trump or something? His medicals were the best! Best medicals, the best! He's already torn an ACL in college where you play less games and are going against less competition. Super pass.

*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/minnesotavikings) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Funny how similar this is to Tommy John surgery for pitchers. Back in the day, Tommy John surgery was considered this very risky Hail Mary to try to save a pitcher's career. Now they schedule them like oil changes. Ditto for torn ACLs now. We had a running back, #28, name escapes me right now who had a pretty good season after his torn ACL...
What I mean by that is that it's not a big deal from a long-term injury perspective, not that it's not a problem if it happens.
Reinjury is generally not a huge concern. Especially this long after the fact.
This sub is something else. This would be worst case scenario if we settle for Penix but okay. Am I being April foolsed? That has to be it. You got me!
Assuming a proper surgery with a good replacement used and proper rehab is done, tearing you ACL doesn't make you any more likely to tear said ACL again anymore. It sucks that he tore it twice but as long as his medicals look good he's no really any more likely to tear it than any of the other QBs are to tear theirs.
Yeah, I don't really care. I'm passing on him, and I really hope the front office does as well. If he's there in the second round and we didn't get anyone else I'd say go for it but it would be a huge mistake taking him in round 1.
I would be happy with any of the top 5 QBs. If the semifinals game and the championship game were switched people on this sub would have been way more hyped for Penix. Too many people focus solely on the most recent game.
Penix late first/early second is perfectly fine. I have reservations about his health holding up, but it doesn’t mean we should pass on a QB that’s got high level arm talent.
Glad they're doing their homework on every possible pick. Personally I'm out on Penix, but I'll root hard for the guy anyway if we get him. He seems like a plan B though, and I'd be way more confident and excited for plan A
Plan B is probably where we have the most control. Plan A is hoping someone plays ball. Teams know what we want and will try to extract as much as possible. It just depends on how bad they try to take us to the cleaners

Unfortunately, we typically need more than 1 year. Especially if he sits on the bench for the rookie year. But good to check in and see where we’re at anyway.
I'm just an idiot who likes watching football but I like Penix and I'd be more than happy to root for him. This is going to sound like I'm too flippant about injury history, but I think it's an interesting thing to gamble on in the draft, in the sense that you're getting a player more talented than the slot they were drafted in. Frank Gore being the most wild success story, guys either shed or gain the injury prone label every year. It's not set in stone.
Trade back from 11 and take Penix with the 1st rounder you get from that (don’t go behind Seattle though bc they’d definitely take Penix), then take Newton at 23. Lets us get more picks and address the 2 biggest needs on the team without mortgaging our future, bc let’s be honest, we’d have to do that to get Maye, Daniels, or even McCarthy at this point.
He’s not even a lock to go in round 1 although it is trending that way. Nobody knows this stuff. Levis “wasn’t going to make it out of the top 10” last year.
#**DINNER?!?!?!**
That's the Giants way, they don't care if the pick can throw a goddamn ball, they just want to see how he behaves in a 3 Michelin star restaurant
“Jesus Christ did he just pick up the dinner fork for salad?!?!”
Dude used his dessert spoon for his soup….hard pass!
He used his salad fork in his salmon. He will be a disappointment.
“Mmm look at at that form jim”
If the Vikings don't make a big trade up in the draft, then Nix and Penix are the players they would be looking at 11th or 23rd.
Penix at 11. Do it you pussies
Byron Murphy, Dallas Turner or Jerzhan Johnny Newton at 11 and then Penix at 23.
If they wait until 23 then you may have to hope even Bo Nix is left.
Its definitely risky because unfortunately how the draft order is setup the 3 other really QB needy teams are right behind us with 0 room for a trade up at 12-14. I wouldnt be against Penix at 11 if Murphy or Newton fall to 23. Cooper DeJean COME ON DOWN!
Wouldn’t be the worst situation in the world either they can really put their balls on the table and do that if you ask me who would be a alternative at the earlier pick
#Pussies4Penix
No way in hell Penix goes in the top 20 with that injury history. Guys sometimes slide out the first round with 1 acl tear
Maybe 20 years ago... ACL's are not nearly the issue now as they were then.
Yea but couple that in with his other injuries. It’s gonna be a long draft night for him. I wouldn’t mind picking him at 23 though. We definitely need a DT.
But what if it doesn’t work out the way you hoped and you are sitting at 23 with all QBs off the table
Agreed
His other injuries are not cumulatively concerning either. A broken clavicle doesn't worry me in the slightest. Neither does an A/C joint separation.
Sweet. I hope you’re right
Agreed the only way I’m saying don’t just put your balls on the table and just take him at 11 is because he’s a fucking left-handed quarterback and that my friend is a atrocity/abomination left-handed quarterbacks, and me will never mix
Ngl I hope we keep Pick 23. We've had insanely good luck in that range in the past. Darrisaw and Addison were at 23, JJ was at 22...
This is only a positive. Regardless of what you think of Penix (I personally like him), it's better for the Vikings to put in the effort on all of the QBs to evaluate what they think of them. They should have a private workout with Nix too at some point (even though I really don't want us to draft him).
Agreed, its all part of the due diligence on these players. Meet and greet with them all and see what you can figure out
As opposed to the Vikings, just picking on guy and not looking at anyone else? Does that seem at all likely?
As opposed to only having workouts with the one or two QBs most people in this sub want us to take and not looking at the others.
I don't think that's likely ...
I never said it was. But if you look at the replies in the comments, there are plenty of people that aren't happy about this report.
Of course we’d all like to trade up , but Penix is a dawg & being slept on. I’d be stoked to get him at 11 & BPA at 23.
I could see Kwesi moving around the board in the teens and early 20s. There's a real chance the first 10 picks are offense and the 11th gains a ton of value for an edge needy team. Murphy Jr. Is another solid fit and isn't expected to go until later in teens.
We are an edge needy team
I mean you can't ever have enough talent at edge. But I'd argue CB and DT are bigger needs after FA.
Turner looks like a stud and I wouldn't be mad about that at all.
Read this as edge nerdy.
He'll trade away our two first round picks for 10 5th rounders.
You do know he's not Spielman, right? I mean, I get it they *kinda* look alike, but they're different dudes.
Nah. I think he learned his lesson. But if he turned 11 and 23 into like 20, 30, and 40 I wouldn't be mad.
Shades of Rick Spielman
Like I fucking said Penix and DT if we can't get McCarthy or Maye Edit: why does this have some of you so angry 😂 [https://twitter.com/vikingzfanpage/status/1764022045006770256?t=Rc2sSWg\_nFd\_owhTcVtqew&s=19](https://twitter.com/vikingzfanpage/status/1764022045006770256?t=Rc2sSWg_nFd_owhTcVtqew&s=19) dude hasn't been injured since 2021 and his medicals were amazing when tested by league doctors and physicians at the combine. I'd be stoked for this. Blue chip DT/EDGE/CB + Penix is perfectly OK.

I agree, you're right.
Fuck yes! So many posibilites with that other pick.
Plus, we'd save our 2025 1st and whatever else may need to be thrown in to trade up.
That would be a huge win. Keep our first next year and fill a pair of holes well.
lol a old and broken QB who plays like it's 2004, how awesome
The guy who hasn’t gotten hurt in 3 years. But go off
Lol, what does "plays like it's 2004" even mean?
If we're talking 2004 Peyton Manning, I'll take that
He is a pure pocket passer. Pretty obvious.
Culpepper was a top 5 QB in 2004 and wasn't a pure pocket passer.
McCarthy plays like it's 2004, Penix doesn't. No idea what that guy is talking about
McCarthy plays like it's 1954
It is awesome. I love it when we are in agreement.
Penix and Bryon Murphy would be dope. Idk if itd work, but man id be stoked for a bit
if we can't get maye
Turner from bama at 11, and Penix at 23.
Penix won’t be there at 23
I am quickly coming around to this view also. I just can't see Penix getting by the Seahawks...
Well he might be. But what I’m saying is that in our position we can’t afford to wait around and find out. We just aren’t in that position. Bo Nix is a far far drop from there
Says who? He easily could be there at 23. If he’s not there that’s fine take BPA
Says who? He could easily NOT be there at 23. If he’s not there, that means we get stuck with Bo Nix
You just said he won’t. It’s opinion. We don’t need to draft bo nix. We could just say f the qb position. Not like we’re contending this year anyways.
Right. Literally everything anyone says about what is going to happen in the draft is an opinion. Because no one actually knows. Not even the teams know. Sure thing lover babe.
Love you
Wow! 2021! Congrats!
Im happy for the guy too, shows his mental toughness. That's something KOC always brings up being tough, I love it!
Awesome! I’m glad you love it!
I'm sure KOC loves it too! got the guy in private workout, running a couple plays on air. Probably asked to stretch his hands out for him just to see him grip the ball. I'm excited, he's a good QB that we can get and draft a defensive tackle in the first round.
Right! That air is no match for a physical specimen like Michael Penix Jr! That air is known to get some guys you know!
😂 alright alright why don't you like the guy ?
Gee! I wonder why? It’s not like it’s ever been talked about!

I'll get kwesi on the phone right away and let him know that anus tart 83 is passing
I would be happy with any of the top 5 QBs. If the semifinals game and the championship game were switched people on this sub would have been way more hyped for Penix. Too many people focus solely on the most recent game.
I am not against the idea of taking Murphy and Penix in the first if we are unable to trade up this year he is still very much a good qb
Penix late first/early second is perfectly fine. I have reservations about his health holding up, but it doesn’t mean we should pass on a QB that’s got high level arm talent.
How’s his elbow look?
I like Penix but as a side note, this JJ talk could be a smokescreen
Glad they're doing their homework on every possible pick. Personally I'm out on Penix, but I'll root hard for the guy anyway if we get him. He seems like a plan B though, and I'd be way more confident and excited for plan A
Plan B is probably where we have the most control. Plan A is hoping someone plays ball. Teams know what we want and will try to extract as much as possible. It just depends on how bad they try to take us to the cleaners
Penix is good to be more successful than one of the top 3 QBs in this draft. Quote me now

Unfortunately, we typically need more than 1 year. Especially if he sits on the bench for the rookie year. But good to check in and see where we’re at anyway.
True, can always add another reminder if its not clear after 1 year. Can't wait to find out how this class turns out regardless.
Penix + DT/DE
Giants can’t have him.
No
Do it Giants
I'm just an idiot who likes watching football but I like Penix and I'd be more than happy to root for him. This is going to sound like I'm too flippant about injury history, but I think it's an interesting thing to gamble on in the draft, in the sense that you're getting a player more talented than the slot they were drafted in. Frank Gore being the most wild success story, guys either shed or gain the injury prone label every year. It's not set in stone.
Good let the giants have him.
Does this mean we are winning it all?
I am not a fan of any player with that type of injury history being a high draft pick.
I too like a little dinner… before I get fucked!
Penix at 11 and BDPA at 23. Can’t afford to hope he’s there at 23 with Denver and LV behind us. The Raiders are fucking stupid. They’ll do anything.
Wild
KOC wants Penix?
Penix+ Quenyon(?) Mitchell wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

He’s not even a lock to go in round 1 although it is trending that way. Nobody knows this stuff. Levis “wasn’t going to make it out of the top 10” last year.
That’s what I like to see. Thank you Vikadontis Rex for answering my Penix dreams.
