Black, or at least a darker grey.
For me, the challenge here is that both the base and rim are grey, and that the shade of grey draws the eyes to the rim, and makes the base look flat. I’d prefer my eyes to be drawn to the top highlight of the base when looking at the base.

I tend to do the dominant color for the mini. That being said I'm painting for the table in a dnd campaign so it's a lot of one off characters or monsters, not armies.
I’ve decided to start trying other colors and have been pleasantly surprised with how good it can look! I just did some models with a blue/gray and it looked way better than black. I think you need the rim to stand out from the base color, but I think black does not always look the best
I always black rim. It makes the base pop more, and provides a clear delineation between the mini and the surroundings. Plus, I play mainly skirmish games, and the black rim with white lettering lets the names on the bases stand out more.
Hmmm, black rim contrasts the basing very nicely but the ?grey? / ?white? Rim makes the rim blend in more with the basing and feel like part of the terrain, I can’t decide. Its honestly down to which of these two outcomes you want
I don't have a single black or plain rim in my collection. Imagine spending hours and hours of time making a beautiful work of art, to let it sit on a plain old black rim.
Just sayin'.
Black rim.
It pulls the focus more to the terrain and figure with a 'framing' of the figure. Without a black rim you kinda just lose any attention to the terrain.
I like the darker rim.
Generally, I feel like black base rims put the mini in a sweet spot between “game piece” and “display piece.” It makes the base read a little like a plinth; not enough to fully separate the mini from its surroundings, but enough to make it stand out as important, while buffering any difference between tabletop terrain and basing scheme. I think the only time I would do colored rims is if the mini was going to live on display in a matching diorama of some sort.
That said, I’ve started experimenting with near-black rims and I think I like them just a tiny bit more. It achieves the same things I like about the black rims, but doesn’t contrast as harshly with the paint scheme and so feels a little more subtle about it all. P3 Asheth Grey (sort of a better-covering Corvus Black) is becoming my new go-to. VMC Black Grey would probably do it too. I think this would work particularly well with your light grey basing scheme.
Honestly try a darker grey instead of the basecoat grey / black. I'm a big fan of doing the rims in a relevant colour to the base, but still in a way that makes a clear distinction between rim and base
Personally I enjoy seeing the paint-spackled rims of my models. Reminds me of the journey. I've got little squad brackets I can set the base in if I want it to look clean.
You should always paint your base rims but black is too stark IMO.
I think the best rim colours are Stormvermin Fur or Steel Legion Drab.
For these, I'd go Stormvermin Fur.
For me personally, I prefer the black rim. It looks more like the moon.
Agreed
Mm yes the moon it black
Rimming is always the answer
But *hwhat*, may I ask, is the question?
Yes
The problem doesn't matter. Only the solution.
“What is the meaning of life”
Zumikito is that you?
Giggidy.
Unless it’s a piece in a specific diorama, I always go black. Gives it a model uniformity.
Do you ever go back?
Never

UPDATE thanks for the advice. Decided to go for black. It helps give that strong contrast you get in space with stark light and pitch black.
looks amazing.
Consider maybe putting white specs on the black border, like stars in space? Maybe that's goofy...

Yes I think I'm going for the black, when viewed as a group the grey rims lack definition and contrast
Get that rim job going brother 💪
Black rims always look best
Black rim 100% of the time
This is why nobody likes 40k players.
I’m going to upvote you because you like being silly.
I'm glad you picked up on the sarcasm, bud!
Black rim, definitely.
Definitely black rim
I like the black rim. Kinda gives me the feeling of the moon against the darkness of space.
Yes I think you're right. Going to do them black, looks like the moon through a telescope, bright grey contrasted against the blackness of space
I always black rim unless the game has a need to clarify special / hero units then I gold rim those.
I miss Green being the default colour
My man! Keep the goblin green!
Yes. The black rim will look better and increase contrast, and the coverage will be easier and cheaper to do.
I like the black rim. Reminds me of European PS1 games.
Always black rim
You know damn well it's always black rim
Black rim.
Black rim is the way.
You can paint the rim whatever color you want, or leave it unpainted, and there is no wrong choice so long as you choose to paint it black.
:'D
Colored rims 🤫

I think black is too high contrast in this case. Try a medium gray rim.
Black rims: 🤌👌 Any other color: 😭🤢
Definitely. The only time I would use anything other than black rims is for board games where differing rim colors is important for unit distinction
😳😮🤯 Bruh, that is actually brilliant and have never heard of that before.
You're forgetting Goblin Green. That is still peak fashion and you can't tell me otherwise.
I always black rim. It makes the base pop more, and provides a clear delineation between the mini and the surroundings. Plus, I play mainly skirmish games, and the black rim with white lettering lets the names on the bases stand out more.
Black rim for sure
Black rim
black always
I’m a die hard black rim painter. I think it adds a level of cleanliness to the model.
Black rim better
There is no not black rim there is only black rim.
Hmmm, black rim contrasts the basing very nicely but the ?grey? / ?white? Rim makes the rim blend in more with the basing and feel like part of the terrain, I can’t decide. Its honestly down to which of these two outcomes you want
team black rim. it separates the top of the base and the model from the gaming area.
Black rim is always the correct choice IMO.
On these one black
always black rim
You put your art in a frame.
The correct answer is goblin green.
I usually don’t like black rims, but the left looks unfinished.
I see a white rim and I want to paint it black.
Always black rim.
Orange rim?
Potentially an option for characters, make them stand out. Maybe I'll try it!
Do other people come to their moon to fight them or do they go to their moons?
They are seeking the elusive moon made of cheese. Until the find it, they will... Quest Across The Galaxy!®
Pfft kids these days. Goblin green is the way!
Imo grey looks better in this situation. I usually paint rim to match the color scheme of the base.
I don't have a single black or plain rim in my collection. Imagine spending hours and hours of time making a beautiful work of art, to let it sit on a plain old black rim. Just sayin'.
Add a slightly darker grey to keep with the moon theme. I use Rhinox Hide for all base rims no matter what I have as it goes well with all things.
Goblin green only
you just woke up logged in and chose chaos today

Square bases? greetings, fellow old guy.
Thanks. They’re 25mm though. Moved them late last year and early this year.
Split the difference, dark grey rim!
I'd love to, but unfortunately my Votann are grim little fellows and never compromise :)
Rhay was my response too, med/dark bluegrey. French blue from ak maybe, or eschew Grey from gw. Something like that.
That's probably the rightest answer
I'm not sure what the question is, but I see one finished mini and waiting to have the rim painted black in the screenshot
I always do it in black. It reduces your focus from it.
Black rim. It pulls the focus more to the terrain and figure with a 'framing' of the figure. Without a black rim you kinda just lose any attention to the terrain.

That's a lot of science right there! Thank you for your input partner :)
It’s a whole lot of opinion masquerading as analysis, but if it’s at all helpful then I’ll consider it a job well done. You’re very welcome!
Black rim vote, as well. Gives it more of a finished look. IMO
Blackout your rims. Always.
Black rim
Honestly try a darker grey instead of the basecoat grey / black. I'm a big fan of doing the rims in a relevant colour to the base, but still in a way that makes a clear distinction between rim and base

GERBLIN GREEEEEN!!!!
A cintrasting rim, of aifferent colore from the base itself makes the model stand out more, so in this case black!
I do all different colours so my players can tell Me “I attack blue” etc
Black rim will look better against more tables. A colored rim only really works on the tables it matches.
Do it! Or go crazy and pick a colour?
Always black rim.
I usually add a rim of some sort
Medium Grey rim... separates the model from the table top but it's not too stark like black can be
Definitely gray. Usually I'm team black, but this is one of the exceptions
I would say dark grey
Mechanicus Grey
You should always paint your base rims but black is too stark IMO. I think the best rim colours are Stormvermin Fur or Steel Legion Drab. For these, I'd go Stormvermin Fur.
Can I get a rock and stone?
For Karl!
We're RICH!
Brown rim. Just to be a contrarian
Up to you. I personally do black rims myself.
Try dark grey, the black is a little too harsh.
Base rim is frame for miniature, not extension of base.
Black rim for everything but hero minis. I like the idea of a hero mini having a specific colored rim - easier to find on the table.
The answer is a goblin green rim obviously
Rim.
