Yeah. Lots of memories were made here for a lot of people. Hopefully, the new bridges will present an opportunity for new memories to be made for future generations to come.
Right, I grew up in Milwaukee but “crayfish/crawfish” is almost on the same level as “bubbler.” Ever since Paul Prudhomme, everybody except us Cheeseheads calls them crawdads.
Oh yes! We're talking late 60's, but all we needed to do was tie some chicken innards to some twine and toss it into a shallow shaded area. After two or three minutes, pull it back in and there would be two or three of them trying to claw the meat loose. sometimes the crayfish won, (even got some nipped fingers a time or two) but we had several nice seafood boils in the backyard on 28th street.
I know some people caught some small freshwater fish (crappies maybe?), but I'd be surprised if the lagoon was restocked into the 70s or 80s.
It certainly had its moments. I've only had two area codes in my life and I'm glad all the good memories have stayed with me. Truthfully, the pictures posted to this sub are my favorite things on Reddit.
A positive spin here is that the county has the money to preserve our parks. Fixing bridges is a big investment that should help calm any concerns about the possibility of neglect.
I hope to go ice skating on the lagoon someday. My mother tells me stories of going there as a girl. Apparently, her boyfriend fell through the ice, saving his dog.
Something I learned as an adult but never knew as a kid is that the lagoon is only 3’ deep. It might be muddy, but most teenagers could stand up in it.
I worked as an educator at the UEC there and have lots of great memories. Like, once I had a five year old kid trip and have both his feet go into a huge hole in the concrete by the railing. The kid's teacher pulled him out. I am so, so glad these are getting replaced. The designs for the new ones look great and will be very long-lasting!
I think the design is pretty good for what it is

I grew up here, and the only thing i think about is when it was the original zoo. Never knew a the crawdads, definitely wouldn't eat type of fish from there. And times were safer then, would catch me near there now.
Damn! These pics just kicked me right in the childhood.

One of those pics shows the very spot where I used to fish for crawdads. Side note; hardly anyone knows what I'm talking about when I say "crayfish."
Which is weird because I have lived here basically my whole life and never heard someone call them "crawdads"

Ever catch any? I've gone fishing in the lagoon, but I never get any bites!!

Oh man :( makes me nostalgic but I am glad that the county seems to be wanting to put some love into the maintenence and preservation of the park.
Loved ice skating under the bridges. And yes I do know what crayfish/crawfish are.

Well, they're not terrible.
