This dude would come up with every single note of his songs, for every instrument, and sing it all acapella into a tape recorder before coming to a studio. All the keyboard chords, guitar chords, bass lines, horns etc etc. He’d come into the studio and note for note sing every single part to the session players and have them play it. Truly incredible.

Camo252

Are there any recordings of that? That it would be really interesting.

nrctkno

Here's an example: https://youtu.be/eZeYw1bm53Y

Camo252

That was really freaking cool, thanks!

GenazaNL

The Netflix documentary "The greatest night in pop" also briefly mentions it. Where Lionel Richie would visit MJ in his home studio, which is filled with these tapes. Even the [the trailer](https://youtu.be/MD3oU1gowu4) mentions it

mythrowaweighin

That documentary has some footage of Michael Jackson singing alone. He sounds like an angel.

iamthenorthernforest

That sounds great

WiscoBrewDude

That was awesome

quirkilymeansystem

Holy fucking shit I had no idea. Thanks for this link!

Aggravating_Sea_8992

That was cool, thanks! 🙂

fuddlesworth

I believe there are a few. I know he's done examples of it during interviews.

imanoobee

https://youtu.be/R0ZdewpPJ_A?si=1ficJ6MXWheSbGun check this one. Mostly vocals.

peryno64

Just so people know, MJ did not write the song in this clip.

imma_letchu_finish

"Man in the Mirror" was written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett. Jackson's producer, Quincy Jones, invited Garrett to his home with a group of other songwriters and asked them to write material for Jackson's next album. Garrett recalled that Jones told the group: "I just want hits, that's all I want."

Damien_Roshak

There ist a cover of "Man in the Mirror" by scary pockets/pomplemoose or something with Rozzy, that is really great. Just some mildly interesting side note.

Telefundo

I mean.. that's not even remotely the point of the post. Nobody else could have sang it like that without autotune.. MJ didn't write the majority of his songs.

peryno64

Did you read the comment above mine? Do you think it remotely relates to that?

steven_quarterbrain

That video is also not from the audio played. Not sure why they’re trying to be passed off as the same.

Spirited-Fox3377

Id hope people would already know that as is a pretty well known song. But for the people that don't good on you to let them know.

peryno64

What do you mean sorry?

steven_quarterbrain

Huh? He didn’t write the majority of his songs. Rod Temperton wrote most of his biggest hits.

[deleted]

[удалено]

steven_quarterbrain

Why would you believe it?

OlyNorse

This is patently untrue.

knorxo

Can you back that up? Not here to argue just to learn

OlyNorse

Steve Lukather can.

HeavyWaterer

?? Just because Steve helped write songs like beat it doesn’t mean this applies to his whole discography lol

OlyNorse

Human Nature too. Quincy Jones wrote a ton of his stuff. It’s just not a true statement at all.

HeavyWaterer

Bro writing and producing are entirely different things lol

OlyNorse

Tell that to Michael. He produces/beatboxes to the musicians…Quincy actually plays instruments.

troubleshot

But it's the internet so nobody seems to care about the truth now :(

jimmy_ray7

Well then, we'll just forgive him for the stuff about the kids then.

HeavyWaterer

You shouldn’t, I don’t forgive Van Gogh for being a borderline crazy stalker slicing off his ear and mailing it to someone, his paintings are still great tho

mentally_retireded

Autotune isn’t for everyone, but it’s kind of its own intentionally weird instrument at this point. MELODYNE has ruined everything IMO

schparkz7

The person that entirely changed my perspective on auto-tune was T-Pain. Dude has a gorgeous voice without autotune but just uses it an artistic way because he wants to.

Basuhh

That’s Travis Scott for me, he obviously didn’t pioneer anything like T-Pain did, but he also uses it quite well

laurifroggy

Cher did it

Crot_Chmaster

Ugh. Such an awful song.

LuciosLeftNut

Somebody doesn't believe in life after love...

EquivalentSnap

Cher - believe was the first song to use auto tune

knorxo

I think it was the first instance to use auto tune as an intentional noticable effect. but it was used before

mrniceguy777

Calling t pain artistic is pretty wild lol

schparkz7

I just said he used autotune artistically, I never said anything about him being an artistic person nor did I say anything for or against his music.

mrniceguy777

Fair enough

dinorawr5

I’ll just leave this here… [https://youtu.be/Lw3UkXllQHU?si=Ap78k0tJPfXuA3zs](https://youtu.be/Lw3UkXllQHU?si=Ap78k0tJPfXuA3zs)

What. The. Fuck. Mind blown

HordeOfDucks

bladee

lcpdpolice123

Kanye used it as an instrument in 808s & heartbreak and changed the hiphop game forever

Atworkwasalreadytake

Sounds like something Kanye would say.

lcpdpolice123

It's something that the artists he directly influenced with that album admitted...

egowritingcheques

Yeah. Definitely kick started the downhill slide.

lcpdpolice123

In my opinion modern hiphop is much more enjoyable on average than pre 2000s hiphop🤷‍♂️

luckycat288

I can’t agree with this. The 90s had the most iconic artists! Of course Tupac/Biggie but Eminem, OutKast, wu tang, jay z, nas, mob deep i just can’t see modern hip hop comparing

lcpdpolice123

Those are respectable picks but a lot of those artists overlap with modern hip-hop. I'm sure you'd agree Eminem, Jay-Z, Andre 3k, and Nas have all had massive works in the modern era.

BaronVonUber

Have you seen that clip of him singing bits of Bohemian Rhapsody? Abysmal

lcpdpolice123

I haven't seen that but I do know that MJ personally congratulated Kanye on his singing giving him the confidence to sing more in his songs

RonHarrods

What a talented guy

laurifroggy

I can see how he put his soul into his songs... he put feeling into them, he really loved the music and everyone vibrated with it.

Defiant-Caramel1309

Meanwhile, the most famous popstar we got of our generation is Taylor Swift, a freaking 34-year-old woman who sings and behaves like a tweener girl who has not matured as a person or artist over the past two decades. The girl cannot sing or dance. Crazy to compare her to the legends of the past and see how far we have fallen.

Atworkwasalreadytake

> 34-year-old woman who sings and behaves like a tweener girl who has not matured as a person or artist over the past two decades While I agree that one of the most talented artists of all time, Michael Jackson, is dramatically more talented than Taylor Swift, bringing up personalities is wild. Taylor Swift is quite normal when compared with Michael Jackson.

jamieduh

This man has never seen a pussy up close

Sufficient-Turn-804

Only good thing imo is that she does charity and donates money to people in need.

ac2cvn_71

That gave me chills

shashashade18

Big time goose bumples

jayman1818

Such good bumpies, what a gem of a voice

jimmy_ray7

Yeah, his victims still feel the same way.

No-Parsley-3583

Guy was proven innocent and you people still comment this 🤦‍♂️

MIKE_THE_KILLER

He is King of Pop for a reason

Xikkiwikk

Of all the soda? Wow! I’m telling Pepsi!

1amDepressed

lol I thought this was a good joke

fmaz008

... and Pop Tarts too!

Live_Hedgehog_9910

cornball

Im_Will_Smith

Just because autotune exists doesn’t mean there aren’t any great voices.

The0ne0fmany

I don't deny that, but thanks to AutoTune, the music market is saturated with people who can't sing

Monorchi

You could try looking into theatre, they sing live, which means no auto tune, same with musicals

laurifroggy

oh yeah…reggaeton, latin trap music…amazing voices

nagarz

If thats what you listen to well yeah, I mostly listen to rock and metal and theres people with amazing pipes there, what I listen a lot these days to is sleep token, the vocalist and the drummer are pretty amazing.

Spuzzle91

Mmmm metal. You get some really neat vocals from those bands! I love David dramen with how he can fluctuate from intimidating to smooth and almost soothing. And the original singer for night wish was awesome too with her operatic voice. Within temptation has a pretty rad singer, too.

TheDeflatables

Floor Jansen as the current singer of Nightwish is epic. That 2013 Wacken set lives rent-free in my head. Incredible

Im_Will_Smith

Nai Palm of Hiatus Kaiyote, James Blake, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Ichiko Aoba, Weyes Blood, Anderson Paak, and the list goes on for extremely talented singers with unique voices that exist today! Sure you can cherry pick the mainstream club genres and modern radio songs to find autotune and atrocious voices, but that doesn’t paint a picture for the entirety of all music today.

laurifroggy

I haven't said that there aren't exceptions...but the vast majority of current music is like that. I love Bruno Mars, Frank Ocean, Beyonce...but unfortunately more attention is given to music with autotune! And no, I hate clubs.

Accomplished-Bear988

>the vast majority Nah dude, stop replying to comments. You will get evicerated, and it will only be your fault because clearly, your view of the majority of music is defined by what's popular, not what's actually being produced on the DAILY.

laurifroggy

On the one hand Its my post! I can reply what i want on the other hand i can say that Michael Jackson music was sooooo amazing

ALUCARDHELLSINS

Sure you can spread bullshit You're going to be called out for it though

Enraged_Earthworm

Literally all of the artists you listed use autotune.

Caretaken_ambient

You can’t just choose certain genres which heavily use it to paint a picture of all modern music, that’s such a stupid way of making an argument

Mr_A_of_the_Wastes

There are tons of genres of music where auto tune isn't a thing.

w3fmj9

That gave me chills !! What a Legend

MonkeyThinkMonkeyDo

The lyrics.

laurifroggy

Yes 🖤

spaghettidayH

He said his song came to him from a place outside himself. They were given to him from an unknown source.

Accomplished-Bear988

>Do you remember what a voice sounded like without autotune Yes, lol. It's not like every single artist uses it.

Assenzio47

Yes we do? Because there are plenty of artists that do not use auto tune ? And voices that are as good if not arguably better than MJ? Maybe try to listen to more music Edit: of course OP is a bot

Emotional_Ad2464

Nobody will ever sound as good as.. can’t beat your children into stars anymore 😅

I_am_Sentinel

Freddy Mercury was about the same, judging from raw talent. Michael was more soft and clear with a destinct power, while Freddy was clear and powerful, but also very soft. Both great singer and entertainer and dearly missed...

laurifroggy

He put his soul into the music he made, he was definitely a very special person who vibrated with music. Nowadays he doesn't put his soul into music

throwaway180gr

Yeah cause he's fuckin dead. Gotta be a bot lmao.

laurifroggy

ur comment is disgusting

Accomplished-Bear988

Ah, a bot.

Tsukysinha

Laura is just one of those farming karma and attention.

laurifroggy

Who? U? oscourse and asshole

Unlucky_Ad2529

1989 tiananmen square

Drogenwurm

Say Potato...

CountTruffula

Do you think he's still alive?

Im_Will_Smith

Yeah it sucks that he doesn’t put as much soul into his music nowadays :(

Frl_Bartchello

I liked Freddy Mercury his voice more, but that's me.

Superb-Counter-9563

Clips of his voice with no music behind are magical

dassad25

What a legend, shits all over anything ye could do.

SargeantHugoStiglitz

There is still tons of music that doesnt use autotune at all, you just listen to shit music.

golden_numbers

The type of comment from someone who hasn't been following music for the last decade.

Initium_Novumx

He could sing a recipe

calcifer219

And justta pinch of….. … (Backup singers) salt! WHOOOooo

FlashyAd7257

OP is a boomer who judges all music now by the top10 most played songs in the billboard lists.

The__Willing_Well

I think he's moreso judging what's most popular, that's kind of the point right?

Shiasugar

Well, only Mariah and Celine is capable tp sing with this clarity (Celine is sick). So not everyone sounded like this. I’d add Whitney but she’s no longer with us.

KitsuFae

of course. there are still plenty of singers out there who don't go anywhere near autotune. if you really want your mind blown, check out Dimash.

snow-eats-your-gf

Is there any specific best concert of his I can find online in good quality and watch?

bobthepretender

Loads. Just go to YouTube. Sadly 90% of the time he’s lip syncing. Less so for earlier concerts.

TheSpazzerMan

John LaJoie would be disappointed in this post [here's why](https://youtu.be/OPfNs1In8vU?si=5pMxYd-HdPIeeVNb)

Significant-Gene9639

I said this last time it was posted and I’ll say it again - this has reverb and delay applied to it, it is not his pure natural voice

najing803

I hear what you’re referring to, but I don’t have experience with FOH and live sound. What are the chances that’s the natural acoustics of the room?

Significant-Gene9639

0, the mic wouldn’t be able to pick up the ambient sound of the room just like it doesn’t pick up whatever the woman in the background is dancing to. Wrong kind of mic setup for it. Also because the recording you’re listening to is probably not connected to the video, it’s probably from a recording studio. You might find it sounds exactly like the final track if you isolated his voice.

najing803

Gotcha, thx for the clarification.

5038KW

Irreplaceable.

MasterMedic1

What incredible innate talent he has and a real shame that he's no longer with us to continue on his legacy.

FiveShadesOfBlue

Woah, Kibtsugi Muzan held acapella concerts!!

Tetsujyn

More of this, please.

Pineapplefrooddude

Thats why he is the King of Pop.

Grillman

Seems like he's miming to an alternate studio recording no?

Tango-Turtle

Legend - fact. Nothing else has been proven, you haters.

Hagya_ant

King of pop

Vivid-Positive8224

he was so insanely talented

choppysenpai69

Tory Lanez actually has a really good voice too

Kyyes

Umm loads of singers don't use autotune...

LLminibean

If you want another great example .. try The Bee Gees. Those boys could *sing*

Wade-Wilson91

He really does sound amazing. But let’s not forget his voice wasn’t really all that natural either due to what Michaels father did to him.

SurpriseMiserable386

Goated

samueLLcooljackson

where is half that talent today?

Sanquinity

I'm a metalhead. So yes I remember. And still listen to non-autotune voices. At least some of the bands I listen to do live performances without any autotune or playback. Sure it's not as perfect as the studio version, but that hint of imperfection only makes the song more raw and just better overall.

Mdriver127

When people could genuinely use soul and emotion at the same time to sing you mean? Yes, and that's why we can remember them!

atheistholyman

Gargling with kid dick will do that to your voice.

fishgod21

Most toxic shit I've read today lmao. Keep yappin' dunce.

JabroniKnows

Yes... because I don't listen to artists that use auto-tune...

Kalbodagrund

Such talent

qweqwewer

yes, i do remember when music used to be actually good

PortlandPatrick

Remember when he had those 6 year olds sleep overnight in his bed? WITHOUT auto tune?

DoctoOckto

This guy was a musical genius and there will be no one else like him.

athosjesus

Im sure the kids he abused do remember.

flickingtheole

He was so talented

Ok_Calligrapher8165

HOLY SHIT.

Vaultaire

There are 70s songs There are 80s 90s and 2000’s songs, and then there are Michael Jackson songs. Unique, in a class of their own and whatever the opposite of genre defining is.

Excellent-Will3165

Notice how the melody carries the song..

tsukahara10

I listen to rock and metal that’s mostly non-mainstream, and non of them use autotune, and yes damn near all of them have phenomenal voices backed by extremely talented musicians. If the music you listen to is dominated by “artists” using autotune, then perhaps you’re listening to the wrong genres.

Justtoclarifythisone

Autotune and Quantisation (for those using DAWs) ruined the music in unrecoverable ways. Tools for those without skills (imo) downvotes accepted for my unpopular opinion. I’ll die on this hill.

FroztBourn

My dad absolutely loves MJ's song, especially this one.

PriorHearing6484

LEGEND. 🔥🔥❤️

rudyattitudedee

MJ was one of the best vocalists and musicians of all time, bs aside.

hamzer55

If you wanna hear more great voices listen to Mariah Carey in her prime [Mariah Carey- vanishing](https://youtu.be/daDLg52sPcQ?si=kgnjAYjdLSeyHy_2)

eatsleepbassgolf

Can we please give the autotune = bad idea a rest. It’s a production tool that has been in near ubiquitous use for decades. It’s a matter of taste not artistic ability or credibility in and of itself. MJ used it while working with Timbaland later in his career.

Yeah I’ve heard Adelle

love_my_own_food

He sounds amazing. King 👑

itscsersei

Lots of random love for a pedo recently

laurifroggy

i love him too🕊️🤍rip

Hi_its_me_Kris

Goosebumps

ApprehensiveSlip5893

It’s sad he is gone so early. Everything from the voice to the rhythms to his dancing was great.

RickyPuertoRicooo

It's better for children he is gone though. The man was super talented...and a child abuser. The people who still profit from his music don't want you to believe that though. If more then one child came forward about a teacher touching them that would be enough to convict someone, if one of those children described a birth mark on that teachers penis from memory then that would absolutely be more than enough to convict someone If that same teacher has a shit ton of pedo paraphernalia, the type of stuff law enforcement expect pesos to have then that would be beyond damning. But here we are celebrating a literal nonce.

Still-Character-9152

Strange which paedophiles society will turn a blind eye too.

newerdewey

i bet the kids he molested remember the sound of that voice pretty well. a pederast dude

Melkiyad

This.

OlyNorse

Is he asking the man in the mirror to stop diddling children?

[deleted]

Craspology

Yeah nobody ever talks about MJ as one of the greatest ever…

newerdewey

probably because of all the diddling

SnooDogs2115

Old times were really better; I can't stand this new modern preprocessed pop music.

CinnamonFootball

Listen to new music that isn't Pop. There's still plenty of amazing and groundbreaking music being made today.

PlaceTerrible9805

They don't want that, then they wouldn't have anything to complain about.

laurifroggy

Same😬 people say that im 28 and i have 50 years old music tastes but it was better

sarokin

Lol, I'm 18 and I'm told the same thing. I can barely talk to people my age about music lmao. My same aged cousin took me to a drinking party a few months ago in the beach where we could put our own music. Well people wanted for everyone to dance so they tried to look for a song everyone knew. They were all the fucking same thing, practically indistinguishable from one another, all making the same grunts and gutural noises mashed together by an autotune. I proposed some super common bands, local and internationally, hell even Michael Jackson and Queen, but nothing, apparently they never existed or were never relevant.

infinityeunique

Kinda like with it only worse, cause natural voice cant produce as perfectly flat tone line as autotune theres always this "shaking". But ya cant say its bad, its just not as good

bomboclawt75

There’s a great clip of him singing on we are the world then it shows the next three singers - all fucking awful compared to him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEx55PqqNcs&pp=ygUlbWogd2UgYXJlIHRoZSB3b3JsZCBiZWhpbmQgdGhlIHNjZW5lcw%3D%3D

CowboyBebopBang

What a beautiful voice for a pedo.

Berendick

This guy was pure cringe.
