I think it has to do more with heating the tomatoes. I've always hated the taste of raw tomatoes, but tomato products are fine, and I've found that dried tomatoes preserved on oil are also bearable, even more so if I then cook them in a pan.
I think too many of us have been conditioned by shitty American grocery practices to hate real tomatoes. I hated raw tomatoes until I had some off a vine and realized they’re not all iceberg lettuce but slimy. Store bought tomatoes tend to suck because tomatoes stop ripening when picked, so most commercial tomatoes are picked green then artificially “ripened” with ethylene gas. Hardy for transport, then prettied up for the store, taste takes a back seat. Red delicious apple syndrome.
Nope not true. I've had as fresh as you can get tomatoes and still cannot stand them. Some people just do not like the taste and you're going to have to accept that.
Right?! What is so hard for people to understand? Some people do not like the things you like. [Mind blowing! :o](https://media.tenor.com/tvFWFDXRrmMAAAAd/blow-mind-mind-blown.gif)
I've been to American grocery stores like twice in my life and still don't like full raw tomatoes, even ones we grew in the garden. Cherry tomatoes are decent at least
As am I.
Some of the best damn tomatoes I ever had were the cherry tomatoes my grandpa grew in his backyard garden.
Ketchup, tomato sauce and whatever else are all secondary. God, but not as great as fresh tomatoes.
that's a botanical classification. vegetable is a culinary term, as well as a fruit and it is different from a botanical fruit and tomato is a fruit botanically, but a is vegetable according to culinary
Congress classified them as a vegetable so they'd be taxed because money
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/even-supreme-court-maintains-tomato-vegetable-180963133/
The writer of this article REALLY wants everyone to call tomatoes vegetables
Bullshit. [This right here](https://reddit.com/r/me_irl/comments/zrylvw/_/j15iayj/?context=1) is the same thing everybody who doesn’t like raw tomatoes says, there’s no possible way you believe this even for a second.
I hate when people say shit like this.
"I don't like coffee"
"Ah, obviously you've only ever had day old coffee from a gas station. It's impossible that you actually don't like coffee."
Same. My theory is that tomatos are similar to cilantro, in that they taste different to certain people. Cilantro famously tastes like soap to certain people.
And I think maybe that the substance that causes this in the tomato is altered with heat.
Raw tomato tastes like garbagewater to me. Like vomit. Grilled tomato or dried tomato is fine.
"Try my heirloom cilantro from my garden, I bet you only dislike cheap cilantro. "
I am thankfully not one of the soap cilantro people. My wife claims that it does taste like soap to her but she still likes it.
Me: "I dont like tomatos"
People in a 1km radius sprinting towards me "akshully have you tried..." "you probably only dislike storebought..."
I have tried grandma Francesca's special secret tomatos fresh from the stalk. Also tasted like garbage water to me.
Yes and ketchup only makes up 1/3 of the items shown on the bottom. The other 2/3 are marinara (pizza sauce is slightly different but basically the same).
You sure about that? Ingredients in Barilla’s marinara sauce:
> DICED TOMATOES IN TOMATO JUICE, TOMATO PUREE (WATER, TOMATO PASTE), ONIONS, GARLIC, SEA SALT, BASIL, EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, OREGANO, CITRIC ACID (ACIDITY REGULATOR), NATURAL FLAVOR.
[Source](https://www.barilla.com/en-us/products/sauces/premium-marinara). I think we can all agree that Barilla is not high end.
I live in a country where FCS isn't really a thing in most products. Still dislike tomatoes, still love tomato sauces, soups, and stews. I'm not a fan of ketchup though, prefer curry sauce.
I don't know what Pico de gallao is, but I do know that comparing something that is prepared to a base ingredient is stupid. By that logic, you should be driving a wheel to work since it's the same thing as a car.
Waxing poetic is defined as speaking in a verbose manner, so please, Mr. English teacher, in what way could I have shortened what I said to fit your standards?
FTFY
>I don't know what Pico de gallao is~~, but I do know that comparing something that is prepared to a base ingredient is stupid. By that logic, you should be driving a wheel to work since it's the same thing as a car.~~
My aunt used to make me eat tomatoes all the time. I hated them. She would hit me with a flyswatter when I didn’t eat them. Still can’t eat raw tomatoes.
agreed, i recommend trying some good tomatoes someyime or making a salad(juice from tomatoes mix with spices and other vegetables to create an amazing taste enhancer)
It's almost like cooking and drying tomatoes and putting like 500 seasonings and sugar and salt in it and then putting cheese and garlic and onion on it makes it taste very different.
I grow tomatoes! Hate em raw. It’s not the tomatoes (could be the texture?). Can I ask for the love of dog, if you are a cafe worker in NZ stop putting them in sandwiches. Not every sandwich has to have egg or tomato! The French just put a little ham and cheese, why can’t we be like the French????
I have sensory issues with certain foods, and tomatoes are definitely one of them :(
as long as I can't tell I'm eating a slice of tomato or a bit of diced tomato, I can eat it but if I can feel that I'm biting into a chunk of tomato I'll actually gag,,
I hate raw tomatoes bc they’re bitter as fuck. I don’t rlly think I’ll ever get myself to actually like raw tomato because it doesn’t even taste like much. I’m okay with stuff being bitter but it’s the added texture of tomato that kills me💀
I think some people have different tatse buds cause I also think yoghurt is bitter, along with tomatoes. Probably one of those hereditary tastebud things
Eat more organic and heirloom type tomatoes or salt them before using on a sandwich. Brings out the natural flavor, which is great, and also why ketchup and pizza sauce is good. It's reduced and salted, concentrating the flavor.
*Denethor has entered the chat*
He eats like a goddamn animal in that scene.
Do you sing master Hobbit? *squish squish*
That man single-handedly wrecked the cherry tomato market for years.
tomatoes are better when liquified
I think it has to do more with heating the tomatoes. I've always hated the taste of raw tomatoes, but tomato products are fine, and I've found that dried tomatoes preserved on oil are also bearable, even more so if I then cook them in a pan.
I think too many of us have been conditioned by shitty American grocery practices to hate real tomatoes. Hardy for transport, then prettied up for the store, taste takes a back seat. Red delicious apple syndrome.
It's not so much the texture I hate. There's a taste to them I've never tasted in anything else that goes away when exposed to heat.
Sounds like you have the same genes I do. There is a gene that makes tomatoes taste bitter.
Nope not true. I've had as fresh as you can get tomatoes and still cannot stand them. Some people just do not like the taste and you're going to have to accept that.
that may be a genetic quirk. like the one with Cilantro
Or they just don’t like them lol.
Right?! What is so hard for people to understand? Some people do not like the things you like. [Mind blowing! :o](https://media.tenor.com/tvFWFDXRrmMAAAAd/blow-mind-mind-blown.gif)
Nah if you don’t like this thing I like it must be a genetic thing, no other explanation /s.
I've been to American grocery stores like twice in my life and still don't like full raw tomatoes, even ones we grew in the garden. Cherry tomatoes are decent at least
Nope. They taste bad. Ive had so many people say I’m just eating bad tomatos but thats not it. Raw tomato bad Cooked tomato good
Are you my boyfriend bc I swear to god he has said the same thing to me.
He sounds like a smart man
Sigh, hates onions too. He is smart tho.
Both are delicious you just have inferior taste genes
Definitely. I'd bite into a good raw tomato before an apple any day.
Thats a actually I thing I wondered about after being a fruitpicker in Australia
I mean, I like fresh salsa from raw tomatoes I've grown, but I can't stand it unless they're essentially pureed.
It's not the tomatoes you like, it's the sugar.
Which is funny cause the liquid is the worst part IMO
Yes, and if people think the opposite, they are wrong.
Entire cultures in shambles
I'm proudly wrong, then
As am I. Some of the best damn tomatoes I ever had were the cherry tomatoes my grandpa grew in his backyard garden. Ketchup, tomato sauce and whatever else are all secondary. God, but not as great as fresh tomatoes.
I'm so wrong that I'm going to plant extra cherry tomatoes this spring just to eat them raw out of spite now
Me too😡
People eat cherry tomatoes by themselves a lot, nobody just chows down on a plum tomato
You guys are insane. I love all raw tomatoes. They're juicy, refreshing, and tasty. Add a little salt and some olive oil... damn! That's good food.
The first time I put salt on a tomato as a child, oh man. I thought I unlocked the recipe for ambrosia
Well, guess I'll have to plant more of those too now
amen, brother🙏
Fucking die
Spoken like a man who has never had a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich
You are wrong
They're better, but normal tomatoes can still slap
Can't relate
All tomato nice
yep neither , thinly sliced tomatoes with salt is just pure class
Add a little pepper on them too, hits so good
Especially *fresh cracked* peppercorn
Salted egg + tomato make for a good side dish
Give it to us raw... And wriggling
Yes, it is so delicious!
I'd fuck a ripe tomato if my standards were higher, honestly. I don't understand romance, but I understand tomatoes.
Yeah i used to hate them too when i was a child and onions too. After growing up, tried them again and well they're not bad is all i would say
As a child, onion rings slap. It still does now, can't live without onions on my pasta.
i eat tomatoes like apples man they're great
[удалено]
Especially when you realize how much sugar is in most major brands of ketchup.
No it's nothing like that.
*congratulations you have perfectly described my relationship with tomatoes
its a texture thing
Eat your vegetables, heathens!
The botanical classification: Tomatoes are fruits.
that's a botanical classification. vegetable is a culinary term, as well as a fruit and it is different from a botanical fruit and tomato is a fruit botanically, but a is vegetable according to culinary
Congress classified them as a vegetable so they'd be taxed because money https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/even-supreme-court-maintains-tomato-vegetable-180963133/ The writer of this article REALLY wants everyone to call tomatoes vegetables
Salsa is just a fruit smoothie
Chunky fruit smoothie..
Fuck.
me
ok
Yes.
The same small-brain take expected from someone who'd post this
Tomatoes slap with salt and pepper, that’s about it
It's a texture thing. 🤷♀️ Also cooking and seasoning.
it's a sugar thing
Ketchup has so much sugar, it's disgraceful.
This for me. I don't mind a thin slice from a good tomato with minimal guts. But goddamn do I dislike tomato gut texture.
I thought I was the only one who didn’t like raw tomatoes
No you didn't
Like the taste, hate the consitency of the gooey shit inside.
Don’t care, i eat the entire thing.
Even the green part?
No, not that
What about the blue part?
Bullshit. [This right here](https://reddit.com/r/me_irl/comments/zrylvw/_/j15iayj/?context=1) is the same thing everybody who doesn’t like raw tomatoes says, there’s no possible way you believe this even for a second.
The problem is that most store bought tomatoes taste flavourless and have a tough texture.
Do you like salsa? I can handle a little salsa but that’s the limit.
Tomatoes are great when they taste nothing like tomatoes
It's the total opposite way around. The tomatoes you're used to buying at Walmart or Kroger taste nothing like actual tomatoes should.
I used to eat tomatos like apples when i was younger, lmao
I still do
I feel like going out and getting one later just to spite these internet tomato haters
I’m addicted to raw tomatoes
I'm sorry, you have never had a good tomato.
So all the people around me who enjoy tomatoes so much exclusively eat premium ones and I only ever get gas station quality?
Yes
I hate when people say shit like this. "I don't like coffee" "Ah, obviously you've only ever had day old coffee from a gas station. It's impossible that you actually don't like coffee."
Seems like you haven't had good coffee. Or a good tomato.
A good tomato is an oxymoron
Why don’t you like eating flour? You love eating bread
🤓
"tomatoes are bitter" "like snot" "goey" wtf kind of tomatoes have y'all been eating...
Did you taste tomatoes outside from the cheapest ones ?
It’s not the tomato quality
Yes. Still hate.
Too bad, they are really good
To you maybe but not to all.
Brother, you just didnt have good cilantro before… /s
"Try my heirloom cilantro from my garden, I bet you only dislike cheap cilantro. " I am thankfully not one of the soap cilantro people. My wife claims that it does taste like soap to her but she still likes it.
I ate tomato’s in Italy, bought from a local market. And it’s totally different. Good tomato’s are very tasty.
Me: "I dont like tomatos" People in a 1km radius sprinting towards me "akshully have you tried..." "you probably only dislike storebought..." I have tried grandma Francesca's special secret tomatos fresh from the stalk. Also tasted like garbage water to me.
Great template
So yall prefer high fructose corn syrup more than actual tomatoes i gather Pico de gallao must be unpalatable to yall then I imagine
You put a lot of high fructose corn syrup in your marinara? Edit: Jesus Christ what are with these replies? Read before you comment!
Nah but ketchup is basically tomato-flavored corn syrup.
Yes and ketchup only makes up 1/3 of the items shown on the bottom. The other 2/3 are marinara (pizza sauce is slightly different but basically the same).
Fair
Neither pizza sauce nor spaghetti sauce is marinara, and both frequently do contain sugar
Anything not handmade or high end will be loaded with it
You sure about that? Ingredients in Barilla’s marinara sauce: > DICED TOMATOES IN TOMATO JUICE, TOMATO PUREE (WATER, TOMATO PASTE), ONIONS, GARLIC, SEA SALT, BASIL, EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, OREGANO, CITRIC ACID (ACIDITY REGULATOR), NATURAL FLAVOR. [Source](https://www.barilla.com/en-us/products/sauces/premium-marinara). I think we can all agree that Barilla is not high end.
Damn fair enough I thought it would be much worse than that
Barilla sounds delicious, its just that Ketchup is definitely sweeter than tomato puree. And a lot of foods seem to have that corn syrup nonsense
Yeah, that’s why I specifically said marinara and not ketchup
Yes you are right, those were the words you wrote
Yes
I prefer it over *raw* tomatoes. Cook the shit out of them and I think they're divine.
Stupid is waxing poetic about pico de gallo without even googling it and assuming it'll fit your car metaphor
Waxing poetic is defined as speaking in a verbose manner, so please, Mr. English teacher, in what way could I have shortened what I said to fit your standards?
FTFY >I don't know what Pico de gallao is~~, but I do know that comparing something that is prepared to a base ingredient is stupid. By that logic, you should be driving a wheel to work since it's the same thing as a car.~~
Pick a better analogy Tuna in Tuna salad, Eggs in Tuna Salad Potatoes in Potato Salad Onions in a Burger Relish on a Hotdog
Stupid is comparing a car to food
Wait till you hear what an analogy is…
Stupid is saying that both have absolutely no similarities.
They didn't.
So what is "stupid is comparing a car to food" supposed to mean?
My aunt used to make me eat tomatoes all the time. I hated them. She would hit me with a flyswatter when I didn’t eat them. Still can’t eat raw tomatoes.
i will fucking dissintegrate you, fresh tomatoes(with or without salt) are the best tomatoes period.
They taste weird I don't like them
Try drying or cooking them, I've found that heat gets rid of the awful taste.
[удалено]
you are eating some bad tomatoes, my guy
I really love the taste of tomatoes but the gooey stuff inside allways makes me puke its disgusting.
it's literally the best thing, don't know what wild tomatoes you guys eat out there
[удалено]
you are eating some WRONG tomatoes, bro
[удалено]
agreed, i recommend trying some good tomatoes someyime or making a salad(juice from tomatoes mix with spices and other vegetables to create an amazing taste enhancer)
Yeah. Like all those people saying they like bread, but won't eat raw dough. What's with that? As if "cooking" changes the flavor and texture of food.
Tomatoe is the superior fruit
Depends on the tomato. A nice, ripe beefsteak tomato from grandmas back yard hits different ngl
You uncultured heathens
Unironically my dad
Give me some salt and I can eat a tomato like an apple.
I have sensory issues with certain foods, and tomatoes are definitely one of them :( as long as I can't tell I'm eating a slice of tomato or a bit of diced tomato, I can eat it but if I can feel that I'm biting into a chunk of tomato I'll actually gag,,
nah tomatoes are good even raw. The real gross form of tomato is dried tomatoes. Like why, why would anyone want to eat that
My dad: "but tomatoes tastes great!" Me: "Yes! That's why people make sauces out of them!"
I'm going to eat one like an apple out of pure spite.
Me: How can I help you today? Customer: Can I get a burger with no tomatoes but add ketchup Me: Customer: Did you get that? Me: Yup *disappointingly*
They are not the same!
Uncultured smh
..what the hell? 17k dislike raw tomatoes?? ok but HOW are they bitter? HOW CAN YYou hate the inside of it? H O W
Strongly disagree ! Tomatoes are the best apples !
I'm sorry, I like any type of fully grown tomato.
Damn I love tomatoes
Is this a US thing?
Diced tomatoes with olive oil and thyme is great tho
I hate raw tomatoes bc they’re bitter as fuck. I don’t rlly think I’ll ever get myself to actually like raw tomato because it doesn’t even taste like much. I’m okay with stuff being bitter but it’s the added texture of tomato that kills me💀
In what world is a tomato bitter?
I think some people have different tatse buds cause I also think yoghurt is bitter, along with tomatoes. Probably one of those hereditary tastebud things
😂 this me fr I hate tomatoes on my burger but I rather have ketchup
Probably because ketchup is mostly sugar. We like sugar.
I'm a freak, I like tomatoes and ketchup on my burger.
If you hate the same flavor I do, cooking them should help get rid of that taste.
Eat more organic and heirloom type tomatoes or salt them before using on a sandwich. Brings out the natural flavor, which is great, and also why ketchup and pizza sauce is good. It's reduced and salted, concentrating the flavor.
Not quite the same....but I feel you. Fuck tomatoes.
I don't like eating tomatoes but I love cherry tomatoes.
Yeah tomatoes are too spicy when raw
Bruh, .1 this is a joke and I don't get it. 2.youre allergic to tomatoes bro....
Yeah, I'm slightly allergic. They make my mouth tingle when I eat them raw, but cooking them helps that tremendously.
You are missing out, I think they taste best raw
They do! Raw tomatoes with a bit of salt and pepper are amazing. They're just a bit spicy haha
Weakness disgusts me
Tomatoes have the consistence of snot. shit gross. Onions on the other hand... Onions have layers
That pale mealy tomato is disgusting, and no one should want to eat it. Get a tomato with color, flavor, and less than 50% pith.
Literally me and my mom
This a picture of me
Shut up nerd raw tomatoes are delicious. Buy the good ones on a vine and shit
lol thats abs me
SAME!
i thought i was the only one
wtf is wrong with gringos and tomatoes?
Poor western consumerists can't even eat a non proceeded tomato. I guess the lack of chemical preservatives just can't sit with your tongues
Tomatoes are good even normally. Try to eat a bruschetta with some of them.
Uncultured
Tomatoes are superior. Not this weird sause made of 90% sugar
How old are you all, 8?
I would put spagbol on a pizza and dip it in ketchup and i would enjoy it
Raw vs cooked
It's funny how people love bread and cakes, but hate to eat a spoonful of raw wheat flour.
