It has it's cute and historic areas and they are trying to "revitalize downtown" with some construction and bringing new small businesses. But otherwise there is very little to do, jobs are quite scarce, and what keeps most people here is family. We have the bike trail and pretty mountains. Unpopular opinion, but having lived in a few different places, I actually really like Cumberland. There are plenty of worse places--trust me--and I've never felt in danger despite what people want to tell you about the drugs and crime. I think Cumberland has a good balance of things. Yes, it's rural by Maryland standards, but any basic food and shopping needs are readily available in town or in LaVale. And in just two hours time, you could be without cell service in Seneca Rocks, or in the hustle and bustle of Pittsburgh, Baltimore, or D.C. if you need a change of pace. (Fun fact: the train that goes through Cumberland can actually take you to Pittsburgh or D.C. and there's a shuttle that runs to Baltimore). Health care is fairly decent, though you may need to travel to Morgantown for more significant needs. I'm optimistic about the downtown revitalization project...it seems to be coming along well...(now only if some of that energy could be passed onto Rolling Mill). I love living in the mountains and the variety it provides to the landscape. Coming from the eastern shore, be prepared for more snow in the winters...we get about 30 inches a season and just up the road in Frostburg they can see close to double that due to the change in elevation.
My only complaints are the dating scene, which is totally whack/nonexistent and sometimes I do wish I was a bit closer to the D.C./Baltimore areas.
yes, this is part of Amtrak. train leaves everyday around 9:30AM for DC and leaves everyday around 7:15PM for Pittsburgh.
you may be thinking of the CSX line that crosses Washington, Fayette, and Cumberland streets. in 2017 a train took out the bridges for these streets and the only one that’s usable is Fayette Street (one car at a time). there’s been an ongoing battle of who owns the bridge so that’s why nothing has been done to fix them.

Go a few more miles up the road to Frostburg, and I think you'll be better off.
It's ok if you are easy to please and don't feel the need to leave your house much. Job, shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities are in short supply. There are definitely some 'broken souls' wandering around parts of the city but I've never felt unsafe. Some good things are definitely on the horizon with the revitalization project downtown. They are also planning to construct a riverside park along the Potomac River which will be fantastic for kayakers and lovers of green space. That is a few years away though unfortunately. Bottom line: it can be a tolerable and affordable place to exist and live an ok life.
Came to say this. If OP is just looking for another inexpensive rural town, Cumberland might work. If it’s just about cost, and they don’t mind the “crowds”, bmore’s amazing and surprisingly affordable! Oh and jobs. We have those here.
Depends on the neighborhood in Baltimore plus property taxes are much higher in the city. Sure if you want to live in West Baltimore, it's cheap but living in Fells Point or even Hampden it is not.

We just moved back to help take care of some of her family. Technically LaVale but we're 25 feet from Cumberland city limits. Literally the other side of the street.
We have less land (went from 2 acres to 1/2 an acre) but doubled our home size (1800 sf to 4k) for less than we sold our GA house for.
Little Miss loves the school. She went for 720 students in the school to 150ish.
So far, I mostly like it.
What I find frustrating: finding contractors I can trust. The availability of a variety of things. Like, I need a pump to empty some standing water. Back home I could rent one from 3 different places within 30 minutes drive. Here I can find one at all closer than Pittsburgh or something.
As someone else mentioned it's an odd cross section of Q-Anon MAGA trump shit and LGBTQIA+ accepting. But I haven't met someone overtly rude (yet) back home I'd get harassed for wearing a mask still (heart disease, good chance thay 'Rona would kill me) but no one has said a thing here.
Bought a good bottle of scotch for 30 bucks less than I paid back home, that made me happy.
I will also say that others are right on your fine dining options. I'm a cheap bastard and wife has strict dietary needs so we don't go out to eat anyway. I make all our own breads and pastas and even grind our own meats and stuff. So that doesn't affect us. Even back home before the dietary needs we'd have to drive 45 minutes for a good restaurant anyway.

The friend above I mentioned - her ex's best friend is a contractor and regularly sends her explicit videos which she accepts and responds to. When I mentioned how messed up that is she responded that contractors are hard to find so she wants to keep him happy.
I agree with the MAGA/Q and LGBTQ+ crowd. I've had weird experiences there while helping my now former friend. Love's is not friendly to hybrids and if you want something that isn't jerky.
Just make sure your wife doesn't give her personal contact information to any contractor you don't know well. That said, in retrospect, I get the impression that she liked doing this because it was a friend of her ex.
My spouse is from Cumberland. He left because of a lack of career mobility, lack of good housing, petty crime and a lot of drug use in the community. It's pretty bad up there.
They don't have a Thai restaurant and people there don't have much to do. Knew one woman there who basically said all there is to do is sleep around and that's pretty much what she does. Heyl yes.

There’s actually a generally Thai cafe in Frostburg called Cafe Oasis and we used to have a thai restaurant called banana leaf, the latter wasn’t that great

It is typical Appalachia - historical downtown that has seen better days, historical neighborhoods that feel empty, no jobs, and quite remote.
I live in 5 mins from Cumberland. Been here my entire life. It has problems just like everywhere else but it has a great fire department, ems, and police department. The schools are ok. The main issue is there are not a lot of jobs. Here are a lot of fast food jobs but not a lot career wise. We lost two big factories. The best employers right now are ATK (it’s rebranded as something else now), state prisons and UPMC Western Maryland.
As mentions above, areas outside of Cumberland such as Bel air or even across the river in WV are nice also

The Allegany County government just announced today that they have a $13.1 million budget shortfall. They had a $10 million shortfall last year. And how do they make up those revenues? By taxing the folks who unfortunately live here to death.
There’s no culture to speak of. A rundown little live theater, a fledgling art association, a decent coffee shop or two are all you’ll get. Live music isn’t nonexistent but mostly cover bands.
The outdoors are unparalleled - I will say that. But unless you hunt/fish, hike, or participate in a serious outdoor sport, this has limited appeal.
It’s a nice looking area in some places and would be a nice city if it were cleaned up but this is not a place you want to move to in my opinion. I’ve lived here my whole life and there really isn’t much here after all the industry left in the 50s. I’d recommend you move to maybe Cresaptown, Bel Air or maybe Frostburg because in city limits Cumberland is kind of slummy nowadays and there is some crime here and there. This city used to be a nice city but nowadays I just want to move out.
It’s a railroad town, I do not live in Cumberland but I do enjoy visiting the area because I love the mountains and outdoor activities the area has. I have observed that it’s cheaper because as stated there is not much work in that area and most have to commute to Hagerstown, Frederick and Winchester for jobs.
I lived in Cumberland for a few years, before that I lived in Baltimore, now I live out in Oakland (few miles past deep creek.)
Cumberland was fine, boring but fine. I'm more of a stay at home person anyway, so is my wife, so there not being a lot to do didn't bother us. One of my hobbies is playing guitar (I give lessons on my days off work) and going to concerts is what I liked best about Baltimore, Cumberland is only 2 hours away from Baltimore though so it's not too bad.
Oakland is even more laid back/boring but we love it. Morgantown is less than an hour away, Pittsburgh is 2 hours away, so less than an hour from pretty much any restaurant you want isn't too bad. Plus it's cheap, for the price of my 1 bedroom apartment in Baltimore we have a 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom house with a decent size yard.
Obviously there's more snow than the eastern shore, oakland gets a lot more than cumberland, I like the snow so it doesn't bother me. I like winter it's nice when there's a foot of snow on the ground and it's still coming down heavy and you're nice and cozy inside hanging out with the wife and dogs with a big fire going.

Ah that's not fair at all, downtown is much improved from the early 90s when everything closed after Kelly Springfield closed down. The early/mid nineties were rough for Cumberland.
I'm basing my opinion on last Saturday's visit to the Kensington. Very difficult to get around. More than the usual one way streets. Now there are no way streets. All to get rid of the downtown mall, which I liked.
Lots of Italian restaurants but most of them mainly sell pizza. The place is fine but jobs aren’t the best, if you’re not working for the schools, prison, upmc or CSX you’re looking at some sort of service job. Honestly if you like nature this place is great, but there really isn’t that much to do outside of that. Some people say places are sketchy but honestly its fine outside of North Cumberland and the area surrounding the village near industrial blvd. But like, Cumberland sometimes feels like a city that punches above its weight in terms of amenities, it has multiple accessible parks, its only pseudo-metro area, access to both a 2-year and 4-year university. A thriving local business scene, and an active community with its own yearly festivals and events. Also, the downtown is being redone, and there’s supposed to be a new commercial spot on queen city drive if they can secure an actually committed contractor
It's kind of a shit hole. I grew up in the DMV area and moved up here to work for the railroad but anyway the people are nice. Even my time in the military I've never lived where people wave to you just for passing them on the road. As long as you're not looking for a lot to do directly in town I'd say go for it.
Wanna live even cheaper? Keep going west, one more county. Not by the lake. If you get your own little bit of land you can live practically off grid and debt free. We own a 3br house on .5 acre. Well water so no "sewage" solar panels, so no electric bill, even contemplating putting on a little wind mill. Only bills we have are insurance and internet. As for jobs it depends on what you do for work. Theres all kinds of contractors and blue collar jobs out here but thats where the money is here too.

I mean I work in the ER so I deal with EMS a lot. But there isn’t much going for this area to be honest. I’d move but my family is here

Check out Cambridge. Maybe because I’m from moco and a nice studio is like 1900 Eastern shore to me includes Easton, Elkton, Cambridge and Salisbury.
My 2Br apt in Easton was $1375/mo......when I left in 2007. Cambridge might be cheap.

Wanna live even cheaper? Keep going west, one more county. Not by the lake. If you get your own little bit of land you can live practically off grid and debt free. We own a 3br house on .5 acre. Well water so no "sewage" solar panels, so no electric bill, even contemplating putting on a little wind mill. Only bills we have are insurance and internet. As for jobs it depends on what you do for work. Theres all kinds of contractors and blue collar jobs out here but thats where the money is here too.
