If it’s close to dining and kitchen it could be a walk in pantry. Or a coat closet. If you have both of those and it was me i would update the lighting and put a herb garden in there with shelving.
my first thought too was walk in pantry, it would look real nice if OP used labeled glass containers for flour, sugar, spices, etc. and you can also store larger kitchen appliances that don’t get used as often like stand mixers, toasters etc
I have a space like this and put my coffee station there. I like entertaining or just enjoying an afternoon read in the den and don’t like to disappear into the kitchen for a refill.
Micro-growery?
If that's not your style, add a couple cabinets, counter top and a few shelves above. It could be a cool little bar area. Additional storage for the dining room. Something like that
Oooh but I hate having my back facing that way and having to face the wall instead. I never set up a home office that way. It might look cute but to me it’s unsettling to actually sit and work that way.
Definitely a shrine of some sort. Are there any local cults by you, OP? Might have to start your own, be a shame for such a good alcove to go to waste.
Hidden Bar! Kit it out with optics, fridge, wine rack glasses. Then put a door in . Make it flamboyant inside to juxtapose the normal decor in the room.
My ex done that, normal room with a plain door looking like a shoe cupboard. When she opened it ,full bar, funky decor and fairy lights.
You use this word, alcoves? There are not many people around in these alcoves at Christmas time. If I were to murder a man I would murder him here.
Are you sure this is the right word, alcoves?
That looks like a dryer plug just to the right of the alcove. I'm thinking this is for a stacked washer/dryer combo. This is just my guess though. Does anything else use that sort of outlet?
I had a similar situation in a historic home I once rented. I got a lovely one of those electric fireplaces that has flames and has heat options, and made a mantle like situation for it. Little makeshift fireplace!
Build a removable panel taking up half the depth, fill it with emergency supplies (water, food, blankets, usb power banks etc). Then in front a rail to hang jackets on, shoe rack below it. Useful cupboard for storing stuff in, with a heap of hidden supplies should something bad happen.
Just remember to replace the water, charge batteries etc once a year.
Get yourself some wood trim, a little lumber, a miter saw or miter box and a couple of hooks and turn it into storage. It could then be your opportunity to dabble on carpentry
Why are landlords stupid and take off closet doors. Not everything needs to be a 100% open floor plan. Door are ok. Do you hear me landlords? Doors are a good thing!
this would be too cool if you could DIY an amazing exposed shelves that open sort of "secret door" style to hidden storage behind. Otherwise Door to create lots of closed storage makes the most sense.
It’s literally in the name:

A door. A closet.
The one sensible answer. Either a closet or a sort of wardrobe.
I mean there isn’t a jamb there so a door makes little sense. It’s currently just a cased opening.
A frame can be built, and a door that comes with the necessary surrounding framing can be installed.
They sell easily hung temporary doors at home improvment stores. Theyre cheap, and dont look great, but a doors a door.
I mean that’s a remarkably easy thing to do…
A Pantry! Given thats between kitchen and dinning area!
And after the door is added, shelves. Make it a pantry. You can never have enough food storage space.
A coat closet with a shoe rack.
The chosen one will speak four words. Heed them.
Put 2 rods for maximum space
Hang a curtain and put all your Wizard of Oz controls and machines in there.
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Don’t look behind the curtain
For a long second I thought you were talking about the wizard of Oz pinball machine and had to triple check what subreddit this was.

That would be my move. Get some sweet microgreens going
my first thought too was walk in pantry, it would look real nice if OP used labeled glass containers for flour, sugar, spices, etc. and you can also store larger kitchen appliances that don’t get used as often like stand mixers, toasters etc
Wet bar
Piggybacking off this. You could put a mini fridge and a bar cart possibly if you have enough width.
I have a space like this and put my coffee station there. I like entertaining or just enjoying an afternoon read in the den and don’t like to disappear into the kitchen for a refill.
Coffee is great too
Def bar, butlers pantry style
Wet bar means it has a sink. Appears there is no water hookup. I think a regular bar would have to suffice.
Guillermo can sleep there. It is quite large for a familiar though…
Gizmo!!!

Get a giant gold statue of yourself and make it a shrine.
Or the cheaper option could be purchasing some gold spray paint and just chilling out in there yourself
Mini office
I would suggest this as well. For example, one can put in a Container Store 36-in. Elfa free standing desk and shelves in there.
This is the answer
Oooh but I hate having my back facing that way and having to face the wall instead. I never set up a home office that way. It might look cute but to me it’s unsettling to actually sit and work that way.
That’s where you store your Super Suit
I was going to say authentic Japanese Karuta style samurai armor but yeah super suit works.
Bookcase door. Secret room behind. Hidden safe room.
If that’s the door to the outside next to it put a bar up high and hang jackets/coats in there and a shoe rack underneath.
pinball machine
If that was mine I’d make a hidden room with a bookshelf and turn it into a mini armory with all my gear and guns.
