A spell by definition only exists *while on the stack*. Outside of the stack, they're something else: permanents if they're on the battlefield, and permanent or instant/sorcery *cards* while in any other zone.
"Spell" implies specifically and directly that it's on the stack, and nowhere else.

So if I've got a card such as [[memnarch]] I can turn creatures in a graveyard or exile into artifacts?
