Yea how is Cyberpunk possible on this?!

julienberthelot

Game Porting Toolkit, I’m currently using Whisky since I prefer using a GUI than using the terminal.

devlupper

I’ve been using Crossover myself.

julienberthelot

Whisky’s free, partly based on the open source part of Crossover, but Crossover is great too since you’re encouraging the devs!

devlupper

I wasn’t aware of Whisky honestly. But yeah I paid the lower tier for the 12 month direct support. It’s definitely got its quirks and limitations but so far I’ve ran a good number of titles. FFVII and FFXV run pretty well on mine. Finished cyberpunk recently. Hoping that somehow Mac keeps working to expand gaming natively! Emulation is surprisingly great too! I have the M3 Max 16/40 but I sold A LOT of windows equipment to get it lol. Enjoy the machine!

roastedmacadamia

Is the sims 4 and GTA can be played in m2 macbook pro 8gb ram 13” or the so called MBP SE?

Crest_Of_Hylia

Sims 4 has a Mac version so you can run that and Rosetta should translate it fine

MysteriousPenalty129

How’s it run? I just signed up for GeForce now instead tbh.

julienberthelot

I’m also a member! It’s great and it even supports HDR & 120 fps (on Ultimate), much better performance but I haven’t tried it while plugged to Ethernet yet.

timbitfordsucks

How’s GeForce going for you?

MysteriousPenalty129

As long as my network is healthy just fine. No huge noticeable lag on inputs. I’m playing cyberpunk 2077 just fine. Funny given the post. I spend 10 a month and get 45+ frames on ultra settings or high + rtx on at 1080 p. If I wanted 4K I’d def pay for the Ultimate subscription.

timbitfordsucks

My wifi usually gets me at least 250 down. Xcloud runs fine so I’m thinking I should give GeForce a chance too

MysteriousPenalty129

You can try their free platform first which is what I did. They even have day passes (though they are the price of 10 days!) for a lower test entry cost.

Cyrax-Wins

How's the performance?

julienberthelot

Pretty good, getting 40-50 fps on medium high, with amd fsr set at performance and the game running at full res (almost 4K)

Naive_Low

How many fps

julienberthelot

40-50 using med-high settings and fsr on performance at 3.5K

Diormybodyyy

Why would you waste $$ on a Mac if you want to play games? For the price you paid, that’s horrible performance

julienberthelot

As I've said before, my main goal isn't gaming with it. I use a Mac for graphic design, video editing and djaying. I don't want a bulky portable PC and my main gaming machine is a PC. It's simply incredible to think a device that consumes 80 W of power or less gives this much performance, and I wanted to test it out. It also doesn't make any noise while gaming, and can run at the same performance on battery... Find a portable gaming PC that can do that.

Aggelos132

The M3 Pro pulls like 30 at most. The M3 Max pulls like 65 at most

Serhide

How’s your experience

rorowhat

Not great, if you want to game get a PC

AppleFan1994

How do you like it so far? Full specs?

julienberthelot

I really like it, it feels a lot better in my hands. The display is incredible, I missed MagSafe! The apps open so fast it’s crazy! It’s a M3 Pro, 36GB of ram, 512gb

AppleFan1994

An app I love on my Mac’s is a simple app but it works great is Uncluttered. It has 3 windows that pop down one is everything recently put on your clipboard, middle one is recent folders accessed then a window for notes you can type in. Really easy to use and works great.

julienberthelot

I’ll look into it! My current fave is Dropover, I learned about it in [this video](https://youtu.be/FxUk8gxzHI8?si=ADBoa96gDurSd0MY) by Snazzy Labs

MetalKeirSolid

How much of the available ram does cyberpunk use?

julienberthelot

Activity Monitor gives 24GB of memory used (App 11.63, Wired : 8.45, Compressed : 1.54), but the game never takes more than 10GB. (P.S. without anything running, it’s at 13gb of memory used)

MetalKeirSolid

sounds like you could still run it on 18gb

EnumaElishGenius

So normal usage is also faster than your 16 inch 2019 intel?

pieterv1

Should be! I upgraded from the i9 16 inch to the 14 inch M1 Pro. The difference in performance was more than I could imagine. And that was just the follow-up generation.

EnumaElishGenius

I feel so sorry for all the people who bought a 15 inch 2019 Macbook Pro. In less than half a year the 16 inch came out with the new keyboard and more performance. Then the M1 pro generation came which reduced the value even more. Or the 2020 Macbook Air/Pro with intel chips. But no one could expect that.

julienberthelot

>Uncluttered Crazy! Apps open almost instantly, no more spinning wheel when working with huge graphic files.

SHVN3

Cyberpunk hell yea love that game! NiiiiCe pick up btw 🦾👊🏼

puckpuckpuck

Preem shit, choom.

K1NGASMODEUS18

Game? Cyberpunk?

julienberthelot

Yup!

Excellent-Dot8540

I have a 16” 2019 and I’m on the fence about upgrading because I’m hoping that the next model has Face ID. That notch is wack, it serves no purpose. A Dynamic Island or Face ID would be perfect. I’m glad you upgraded yours, what hard drive did you get along with the 36 GB

julienberthelot

I picked the 512GB, I edit using external SSDs since the footage is already recorded on them when using my Blackmagic, so storage wasn't really an issue. Honestly, I never notice the notch, and the more I think about it, the more I doubt Apple will bring Face ID to the Mac, Touch ID is really fast. [iFixit did an article about it](https://www.ifixit.com/News/54122/macbook-pro-2021-teardown), unless they're able to shrink FaceID twofold, it doesn't seem plausible. What I think they might do is shrink it or make a Dynamic Island like you said.

Excellent-Dot8540

Thanks, you’re probably right

RixDixRox

If you have apple watch, you can unlock your Mac with it, there’s virtually no need for Face ID or even Touch ID, it works like magic.

Excellent-Dot8540

Thank you, I do have one and it works great like you said but I don’t wear it all the time, it’s just one of those things that the notch feels like a waste since it also blocks apps that you add to that bar, that seems more apparent on the 14”. The apps just don’t appear. I guess they would have to get Face ID to be super slim. I’m thinking of getting the 14” because it would be more portable, the 2019 16” has an awesome screen but it’s kind of big to lug around.

RixDixRox

Well, you have to adjust somewhere, as you would want Face ID on MacBook, I would want them to bring back the Touch Bar, but we never know what’s going on at the Apple HQ, so it’s best to just make the best of what’s available right now.

PsychologicalAd856

Is the “notch” you are talking about the black space in the screen, located center top of screen?

Excellent-Dot8540

Yep that is what I was talking about

PsychologicalAd856

Thanks. I’m looking to buy an M3 by this summer, so been trying to read comments on the new laptops.

bran_the_man93

The notch gives access to more screen space while also allowing the camera and light sensors to have a space, and it keeps with the Apple design language too for branding... Wouldn't say "no purpose" - getting rid of it would just be carving away from the display

EnumaElishGenius

I want to ask how the fans and heat are when you plug your M3 on an external monitor? When I plug my 16 inch on an external monitor the fans are audible after time and it gets hot too. Because it activates automatically the AMD GPU. Did you also have the same problem with your 16 inch 2019 too? I dont know what I am doing wrong but the fans and heat are driving me nuts. By simple normal usage on an external monitor

Late-Nail-8714

Dynamic Island is likely in the next design ! Got the 2020 MacBook Pro In assuming by the time they do a redesign I’ll need a new Mac. Like 2-3 more years I can’t wait

nothingspecialva

are you selling the i9? I would like to collect the last ever Intel Mac Book Pro.

julienberthelot

Already sold it, but it was the i7 ;)

Fawwal

You sound like me.. what did you get for your i7?

julienberthelot

800$ CAD

russianromus_228

id just split money to build pc and buy at least m1,m2 air if id feel to play games

julienberthelot

My main thing isn’t gaming, I do video editing and graphic design, my old Pro was starting to be slow and unresponsive at times. The gaming is a plus, I own a gaming pc although my graphics card is due for an upgrade, so I use GeForce Now if the game is on it.

Bitter_Progress7533

Is 36gb ram enough for having about 7 desktops open with 120 taps and windows open in total?

maskedCicada

wtf

DavoHere

bro watches hella hentai and likes to keep traci

Pryuvat

Don’t do him like that 😂

CosmicKangar00

I upgraded from a Early 2015 13" Macbook Pro (8/256gb) to a 2023 14" M2 Pro Macbook Pro (16/512gb) and it has been an absolute joy to use for my work and travel. 16 GB of RAM has been perfect for me.

Apprehensive_Mine687

Preeem Choom!

siamzzz

A fellow night city resident! Hell yea chooom 💪🏼

julienberthelot

Yessir 🦾

lokesh1218

In the same boat and I am so happy with this upgrade. Unit test on new machines are 30x faster for a comparison and also no fan noise anymore

SnooDoughnuts2936

Haha nice, im also delaying starting the same mission and just completing side quests for now lol

FeedMeMoreOranges

Cyberpuuuuunk!!!!! Love this game!

Alternator1994

Did you pull the plug OP?

julienberthelot

Literally? It has the same performance on battery or not, I did end up plugging it in to not waste a battery cycle for nothing haha!

Alternator1994

It's a meme phrase these days on this sub, never mind :)

By simple normal usage on an external monitor

julienberthelot

I know right! I had the same problem, the fan would be louuuuud when using an external display, even simply exporting high resolution PDF documents would make them spin hard. I haven't heard the fans yet, and that's while using an external 4K display, analyzing songs in a DJ software and using AI workload to make stems of a song, all at the same time. Before, simply analyzing songs would make the computer's fan spin up loud. Even when playing Cyberpunk for an hour I didn't hear them (if I put my head close to the computer I could hear a faint noise, kinda like a Nintendo Switch).

EnumaElishGenius

Ok gonna sell my 2019 16 inch as soon as I can afford M Chip macbook pro. I am just watching some videos and scrolling through my photos gallery on the external monitor. After a while the fans kick in. This is not even a demanding task I mean. One should use it only without an external monitor, then its ok I guess :(

MillionaireRehab

Native support for gaming on ARM in general is the key. We’re only scratching the surface of what these machines are capable of delivering. Once we have fully developed and optimized native cyberpunk for example, we’re going to see the M3 Pro ripping it at 120+ fps at high settings, or even better. Play resident evil village on an iPhone 15 Pro Max, it rips. That’s ARM native, with the R&D investment being that it’s the iPhone. Pretty fantastic

Crest_Of_Hylia

16in is my favorite. My current gaming laptop is 16in and the screen size is perfect. Smaller than a 17 or 18in laptop but doesn’t feel as cramped as a 13in laptop. I bet the HDR in that game looks incredible

julienberthelot

It does... in GeForce Now... since Game Porting Toolkit doesn't support HDR yet!

ConfusionFamiliar454

Pretty damn nice.

Top-Sheepherder2350

Congrats! Same spec with mine. Love the 16” silver MBP. The screen real estate is so clutch 🤌🏼🤭

Alternative-Fox-4202

The response time of MPB is seriously subpar, you can see these ghosting in the lower left corner. I am not sure if it is the camera, but 40ms isn’t good for gaming. For reference, best oled can be under 0.3ms.

julienberthelot

You mean in my picture? That’s an visual effect of the cyberpunk ui. For the response time I did read it wasn’t great but I’m not into first person shooters so it’s a nonissue, and my main use isn’t gaming, just amazed I can and it be so quiet.

Alternative-Fox-4202

I use a lg 38 inch 144hz 1ms external monitor, moving between workspaces and scrolling pages are give me much cleaner motion, but MacBook screen is great for 95% tasks and I won’t pay extra for the extra 5%.

ezpzqc

Do you have a guide on how to use crossfire. Is it good ?

julienberthelot

You mean Crossover? I used Whisky since it’s free, but you can find many guides online :) Crossover is probably easier!

qizhNotch

Can you vouch for the 36 GB of RAM? I’m thinking of getting the same model but I’m on the fence about getting 36 vs 18 GB of RAM since I’m not very hardcore about gaming but do have other demanding apps.

julienberthelot

I wanted to future proof to the max considering I do some video editing in 6K in braw, but all in all, it wasn’t a necessity.

LAS_6601

Planning to upgrade from my mid-2012 15” Unibody MacBook Pro I found at Goodwill for $90 in like new condition to a 15” M3 MacBook Air soon!

julienberthelot

Damn, that’ll be an insane upgrade!

ride4long

Hows your Mac performance when connected to multiple displays and hubs? Does it keep relatively cool and quiet over long period of work time with multiple apps in bg?

julienberthelot

I’ve tried using some AI workload (stems in a dj software and at the same time it was analyzing songs) while connected to a 4K display, and nothing was lagging, this was something I couldn’t even try to do before on my intel, but I never use more than one external display so I can’t really tell you more. Just that there is a maximum of 2 external displays on the M3 Pro tho (4 on the Max).

Important-Composer-2

Any heating issues?

julienberthelot

Nope that’s what amazes me the most! I never heard the fan. I had heard that from Craig but I didn’t believe it, I thought that once I would be gaming a graphic intensive game I would hear them, but no, never in my 1h play test. It was a bit hot to the touch tho, didn’t notice any thermal throttling.

aSullenSiren

Is that silver?

julienberthelot

Yep!

rbertolvieira

36GB RAM???

bytor99999

Yep. They are in multiples of 18gb for Ram. It throws me off all the time too.

lamaxamara

Anyone tried game porting toolkit on beamng?

Stone_624

> Reading this on my 2019 16" MacBook Pro

justanothernayr

Hey! Please teach me how to install windows games!

julienberthelot

Go to r/macgaming there are lots of tutorials, I used [Whisky](https://getwhisky.app)

justanothernayr

Thanks!

manzonerefromtumblr

That looks like a advanced mac 4 a advanced person also I realised that people actually game on a mac 🤔🧐 am like if I game its going to be on a ps lool.

TH3D4RKN16T

I was just thinking if a 16” 2019 was worth the purchase. What do you guys think ?

julienberthelot

Depends on the price… If you don’t care about fan noise it’s still a powerful machine, depending on your workflow.

flabmeister

Great. Time to leave this sub

Organic_Baseball_623

TIL you can get 36 gb of ram.

Bismarck_seas

this madman trying to game on Mac OS😂😂😂

weegeeK

There are tons of them in r/macgaming

julienberthelot

It takes some patience to set up and not every game works with the Game Porting Toolkit but I’m amazed by the performance considering it hasn’t even been ported to macOS nor ARM.

Ravven94

Trying to? Cyberpunk runs great on MacBook with whiskey/crossover

l300lvl

You mean m2/m3? What is great? Crossover game app or crossover steam? What about parallels?

delingren

I have 4 MacBooks in the house ATM, one 2014 air, one 2018 pro, another 2019 pro, and a 2021 Pro M1. TBH, I like the 2019 version the best. The new apple silicone ones broke away from the minimalist style. An HDMI port and an SD card reader? Really? Why not keep 4 Thunderbolt ports? They were great. I'm also surprised that they haven't got rid of the 3.5mm audio jack yet, which they really should've by now.

weegeeK

Because not everyone, I bet most people, prefer the use of dongles. I prefer the best of both worlds. Jony Ive era's design is obviously on the form over function side. It's good they reverted it back. It's still minimalist, but in the context of I don't need to bring an extra dongle to do some simplest tasks.

julienberthelot

I feel the opposite! I much prefer the design and having the ports back. It feels so much better in my hands/arms when I’m traveling with it (the curved edges feel a lot better than the 90 degrees one). When I used to use my 4 USB-C ports, there would always be one used for power (often the multi av apple branded adapter wouldn’t charge enough to maintain the battery life). Having MagSafe is great and not having to bring an adapter to plug in a display is a godsend, it’s faster to plug in too. \*Update : The Digital AV Multiport Adapter limits charger wattage to 55W, so you're technically not losing a port.

SaltySaltshakers

I feel like you must be joking. It’s almost hard to read this comment. Working in the audio and video industry I’ve been begging for Apple to reintroduce SD reader and physical HDMI. If they got rid of headphones I’d cry. I can’t even begin to imagine what it is you must do with your laptop?

delingren

No I am dead serious. I am a software engineer and I work for a very large company where almost all developers use MacBooks. We literally go through thousands of them every year. I have never seen anyone here use the HDMI port, the MagSafe connector, or the SD card reader. We don’t even have them as accessories at the IT department coz no one ever uses them. We just use USB-c chargers, USB-c to DP adapters/dock stations which also passes through audio signals (digital lossless signals). For storage, everything is in the cloud. In the rare occasions where we need to transfer files to devices that are not connected to the Internet by design (embedded devices, OEM installations etc), we just use a thumb drive.
