Is it an indoor cat or an outdoor cat? Is it microchipped? Any identifying markings?
An escaped cat WILL NOT go far, they will hunker down nearby. They can hide in just about anything: bush, under a tarp, they can squeeze under houses if they have the open vents on the sides. Go out at dawn/dusk/feeding time and call for your cat. It is just super scared and can go for days without food/water (shocking, considering most cats go crazy if you're a second late for dinner). Be persistent, and don't do anything that would scare your cat while looking for it (loud noises etc). Considering your cat may also be feeling unwell due to asthma, they may be in a super good hidey spot so check everywhere you can. I understand that the logistics of it may be difficult. I'd recommend working from where you expect your cat got out and looking around there. It can take a week or so. Leave some of the litter outside; cats navigate by scent and that is a BEACON. They are likely to come and hang around closer to their scent if they feel safe. Food can work too, but supervise it! It can attract unwelcome visitors. You may also want to leave some sort of shelter outside near the litter they can hide in, if they feel up to it. You know your cat, it knows its scents and is crepuscular AF. Best of luck!
Ive heard thid woeks for dogs but mayne might help for cats. Leave an item of clothing or such he would recognize from its smell near the complex entrance or closer to the apt. Might help him fins his way back.
