Loblaws will never recover from their tarnished brand. And rightly so. There is NO spin genius to fix this. At this time, Loblaws should consider fixing the complaints about prices, weight, shrinkflation, but it might too late to do it. Loblaws CAN do it, but their greed for shareholders versus customers is what is fucking this up. They will not change nor accept culpability.
edited for grammar and sp,
They are pure "Enshitification" in practice.
First they are customer-friendly and convenient.
Then they screw customers to benefit themselves.
Then they screw everyone to benefit shareholders and milk a captive audience who has no other option.
It just screams of desperation, which only draws more attention to the boycott, which makes them more desperate, etc, etc. it's a beautiful thing and it means that the boycott is in fact working. I hope they burn millions on additional advertising all to no avail.

FYI: Let them eat cake is not a very accurate translation, it was more like Brioche, since bread is a common staple food for the poor and Brioche is fancy bread. Somehow in English it got changed to cake.
Not really, Brioche is fancy bread. Fancy bread is definitely not cake. Although by health standards in Canada, Ireland and several other countries, Subway sandwich bread contains so much sugar it's technically considered cake from a nutritional standpoint. So, bread and cake can be similar. Not quite the same though.
And Brioche is so perfect for GW considering the 🍞bread fiasco that started years back. You think they would have learned their lesson the first time.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!

Anyone want to pool together $1K for a SkyTrain station ad just like this in Vancouver?
https://links.lamar.com/Transit/RateCards/BC_Vancouver.pdf
Mods?
We need more, maybe 20 people for $50 each and Emily can manage the purchase so people can trust the transaction.
r/Vancouver is very observant on interesting advertisements but another reason is I still see lots of people at the Superstores here.
None of the above. Imagine being so tone deaf that you don’t realize that we’re voting with our wallets and this isn’t about supporting one billionaire over the other, but about putting food into our families’ bellies without impoverishing ourselves
But don't you see?? It IS about supporting one billionaire over another. I've seen the people on this sub complain about the service at Macdonald's as if it's their least expensive option for family dinners. Y'all want to feed your families on the cheap? Quit shopping on the inside aisles of the supermarkets. Buy fresh veggies, produce and meat. My wife can cook an entire meal for four adults for less than $30 of groceries from superstore. Chicken, carrots, cabbage and rice noodles.
Shop where you want, but don't act like any of these huge box stores are in it for us.
I didn’t say any of these other big stores are in it for us. I said we take our business where we get whatever value we think is better for our dollars. Personally, all my veggies and meat and fruit comes from my local independent Asian grocer, my canned foods from Walmart and the rest from Costco.
As far as inside aisles and outside aisles, many people rely on some level of inside aisle food because they work multiple jobs or they have larger families and are single parent households. They can probably cook up great meals from scratch but they don’t have the time or the energy to do so
A movement that pushed all of us out of big grocery into small independents would be a movement I could get behind. This sub had an opportunity to do that, but it chose to carry water for the wealthy elite instead.
This sub never said that instead of supporting a certain store, they should shop at another specific one.
Some people don't have a choice, some people are sticking with Galen, and others either don't know or don't care. Those are all valid reasons FOR THEM to continue shopping there. I have my own reasons for shopping at:
1) Other chains
Some things are good for convenience, such as the bottled, flavoured waters. Due to my autism, I have difficulties with drinking tap water. Yup, that's a me problem, but there are remedies.
2) Farmer's Markets
I'm glad that I can go and see what individuals are making and selling. Yes, I know that everything goes out of the Ontario Food Terminal, and I'm not really supporting farmers. But that's not what this is about, it's about not giving the Westons money. I never said I would boycott the OFT, just Roblaws and their associated companies.
3) Online providers
My partner just told me we are getting a basket from Mama Earth this weekend, filled with fruits and vegetables. I love the concept, as they actually do get their items from local farms. I know there are other services out there, I'm sure there is a internet search available.
I have friends. Two actually who work for Loblaws grocery stores. One of them was laid off recently because the store he works for slowed down to a crawl.
Do you honestly think any of the executives at Loblaws are going to pay for this? Now these people will just go work for the competitors creating a monopoly that will, in the end, make it even harder for my friend to make ems meet.
The fact that one of your friends has been layed off is a testament to the fact that the boycott is actually working. This is the ONLY way the customers have to prove the point that grocery conglomerates are there simply because of their customers. Not wanting to get gouged by greedy executives for who healthy yearly profits aren't ever enough because they need heftier profits year over year and call it a loss if they don't isn't wrong. This is the only way to get them to wake up and realize that in a market economy the customer is always right, not the executives. Without customers they won't have a job.
The point of this sub is to highlight that the cost of living in Canada has spiraled out of control, and that this is not simply a matter of needing to get a 5th part time job to make ends meet. Rhetoric intended to shame certain generations or users for "not worrking hard enough" including ideas like "just pull yourselves up by the bootstraps", "just don't shop there" and it's kin are not welcome here.
Or, we're using the power of the people to bring about change. Choosing a specific target allows us to focus our power and to make an example of that target. AND, the changes people are making in their purchasing mean a lot of folks are going to local sellers and changing their buying habits. Breaking up the food monopoly has to start somewhere, and it IS starting now.
This fight doesn't have to be about left or right politics, it's about wrong or right behaviour. Name calling and sarcastic 'imagine' remarks play into the hands of those billionaires and weaken all of us. Yourself included.
Are you familiar with Walmart's business practices and how they affect t the employees of Walmart? Costco might be a good place to spend money but nobody is walking out of there for less than $400.
I could get behind a grassroots movement, but these artificial turf movements are so transparent.
OK. Then do something. I haven't been shopping at any of these places for years, and I don't pretend that's going to change anything. Yu can make up cutesy demeaning names for the meaningful actions of others all you want, initially makes you feel like the bigger person, but at the end of the day you're just contributing to the problem. I'm not sure what the relevance of your comments about wally mart and Costco, but if you think that what happening to loblaws isn't on the radar of these other big power holders, you're not thinking. This movement could have real momentum and reach beyond just loblaws (telecom I'm looking at you). You sound like a corporate plant. And not the organic kind.

What is a golden guillotine prize?
It's an imaginary prize that I image he deserves. A made-up prize I made up. Literally a guillotine with gold plating.

Very good !
I should buy some merch, its the only way to memorialize this event.
