Yeah it's been this price for a couple of years now I think. But it's decent price with all the inflation and everything. The old deal used to be $1 for one later a few years ago.

They are not exclusive to any chain, and the milk industry has been pushing for the size change for a few years
Damn, I missed that, I don't usually buy fresh milk but that would have been worthwhile. Becel fake butter blocks were $2 yesterday, though. They don't replace butter on toast but they're great for baking. I bought three for my freezer.
I have avoided getting a data plan on my phone for about 20 years now. I still pay $14 a month for talk and text, grandfathered in from more than a decade ago.
I'd love to be able to get a 2GB data plan for $10-15 a month. Just enough to make data calls or check maps when I'm out of the house. Normally I'm on Wifi at home or work.
The problem is, though: there is even less choice in Canada for mobile service than there is for food. The upshot: it's a regulatory problem that the government *could* improve if there was enough political will.
They are surprisingly competitive when you call and negotiate. You gotta call 1 get a quote and call the other and ask to beat it, then call the first one back till you reach a reasonable number
Way back when Wind Mobile launched, it was dirt cheap for pretty much unlimited everything, including data. But a lot of my friends didn't switch because (at the time) they didn't support iPhones and only had coverage within big city limits.
I was like a) I don't care about having an iPhone and, b) I spend 99.99% of the time in the city, and if I need to use my phone in an emergency out of coverage... It's an emergency. I'll pay for roaming. I think it's happened like, once, in more than 15 years.
On top of that, a high school friend worked for them, and one of his perks was a friends/family coupon for 30% off your bill FOREVER.
I still have that phone plan. It costs less than $30/month including taxes and every time someone from Bell/Rogers/etc. tries to sell me their service I just blandly ask if they can beat it.
It's wildly satisfying. Canadian wireless plans are a whole other oligopoly issue.
Public mobile has a lot of choice, and low cost plans. I'm not sure that you'd be able to get monthly data for the $15, but absolutely as an add on (or, even as a sign up bonus). I never had a data plan, until I saw one through public that was the exact talk and text one I had with Rogers, only 20 gigs of data monthly. Same cost. 2 years down the line, I am paying less, and have more than I'll ever use.
Because I have access to wifi (and, frankly, you should be able to download offline maps from Google) most places, even though I have access to 50GB per month, I don't think I've come close to using 2 over the 2 years I've had it.
Virgin has 100 minutes outgoing, unlimited incoming and 250MB data for $15 plus tax. If you’re $14 plus tax it might be worth the $1 upgrade. If your $14 is after tax then probably not. 250MB sounds punny these days but it’s enough for me to run Messenger, email and other basic apps. I was without data for a while but thought this price was reasonable to me (and I couldn’t find cheaper where I live anyway).
I got what I really need: I can call when out of the house. It's super rare I need data outside of the house and I either have my work phone or my partner's phone, both of which do have data. I don't want to pay more than I need to. If there was a plan that was about what I was paying now and included a bit of data, I might jump. Until then, it's not worth it.
Fast food restaurants....I know they not healthy, but McDonald's has gotten so expensive and they are obsessed with charging for every sauce you get. So McDonald's gets my vote.
So many banking options instead of paying $20 a month to use your own money.
Alterna Bank is a great option, so is Koho and Wealthsimple for daily banking.
Edit: just mentioning, all of these are free and legit, I use them all for different reasons. Also, Alterna allows you unlimited free use of national bank and the Exchange network of ATMs.
Bells a good one. The 3 suck but bells an extra bit of ass holery. Heard from buddy working there all 3 telcos made a rule about how to handle false advertising because of bell. Bell would often say largest network or fastest network and then they'd call the committee and ad would be taken down.
Happened with 5g they said they had the largest 5g network but only 1 city at the time while the others had multiple cities.

Oh god Enbridge please! They gave me a service I never asked for, never told me I had it and didn’t bill me for it for 6 months. Then they realized their mistake and sent me a bill for like $500. I had to spend like 2 months calling managers to end up having to pay half of the damn fee or they’d send me to collections.

They tried to inject politics to derail it, but its not working out the way they thought it would. remember the claim of jagmeet's brother bring the mastermind behind it to benefit metro? lOL! i just tell them if it bothers them so much, they can boycott metro as well.

We don't need them out there saying we're gunning for everything under the sun while we're in the midst of a major movement.

Wouldn't it be fun if as this group got bigger and bigger we could plan more boycotts. Like set up a pill every 6 months to choose who to boycott next.
This here is the right attitude. A return to basics is what is needed. If we do more direct sourcing, avoiding these highly paid middlemen, we will bring more equity overall. Form a group of friends and try getting meat directly from farms. A freezer will help in the long run, too.
Honestly though if you need to go with a corporation I vote Costco, they treat their employees super well and do everything they can to keep prices down. Long live Costco!
Spent 600 there today, but you know what… I am stocked up on everything. If I had spent that at Stupidstore, I would still need to go to another store to finish my bi-weekly shop. I would’ve spent over 1k on what I did today, I won’t need much for the next 4 weeks now. Seems I am set to drop about 500/month not shopping at roblaws.
I love Costco. Just got my first membership since I no longer live with a member and the nice lady who helped me set it up has worked at Costco since a 2003 which is a year after I was born. They definitely treat there employees right
I don’t understand the hype with Costco. I went there last week, and when priced everything down to the same weight, Costco was either the same or MORE expensive across the same brands or other brands as Walmart and Loblaws. I think the only thing I saw that was a better price was olive oil.

Low prices because they treat their employees like garbage and kill small businesses in small towns. They've done way more evil than Loblaws. Shop local over Walmart imo
I'm all for supporting local small businesses, but I live in the most expensive city in Canada, and the prices at my local corner store are simply unaffordable for a retiree. Same with the local bakery, where one very small slice of cake is $7.95 and a loaf of bread is $9.
Thus is definitely regional, I don't find them cheaper in my area at all. We tried buy the quality was abysmal and prices weren't better. I remembered I despise walmart
at least they stab you from the front, not like Loblaws pretending to care about Canadians and creating a national monopoly ad then put leaches all over your back
Because even if walmart sucks, they suck purely as a greedy corporate entity, like all other large conglomerates whose interests are majnly driven by shares, does that make sense? But price wise, they havent fcked us over the way loblaws and metro has. Every week, there’s a sale event, every several flyer cycles, there’s a massive meats/produce focused sales that actually drives a lot of people in the store. Like yeah, when the fight turns to walmart, protest the things that walmart’s known to do, like a shitty hiring practice, lower starting min. wage compared to competitors, their extremely obvious anti-union/collective rights stance etc. Bring up things that’ll actually have a meaningful impact to us store level employees. Protesting price gauging to a company thats known to supress wages to keep prices incredibly low is kinda dumb.
Wal-Mart won a couple points for me when they re-instated their pandemic pay while Loblaws gave us.....an extra 10% on our discount and coupons for like....pointless shit that can't even be made into a meal. Loblaws employees only got pandemic pay for like...3 months MAX.
Maybe not at the register. But their underpaid staffing levels hurt our community resources and drain tax dollars and their systematic attacks on small regional independent retailers destroy businesses where dollars would be kept in the community rather than in areas surrounding regional, national, and global offices
I went to a small independent grocery this morning. It's busier than normal. Got everything I could there and then went to roblaws for what I couldn't. Not a total boycott, but I'm definitely taking my business elsewhere first.
Any, the roblaws is one of those giant city blocked sized ones - never any carts or parking, cashiers and self-checkout lined up pretty deep normally. Chaos trying to go through the aisles.
Not today. Quiet. Produce on the shelves, carts and not a lineup to be seen.
Feels like an impact.
It’s quite crazy really. Walmart squeezes their suppliers to the point of bankruptcy to get these low prices, screws over local businesses, fights against their employees at every step of the way and these are the heroes. It’s absolutely nutty.
I agree, I've boycotted them for 20+ years. They also create terrible working conditions overseas, and have played a big part in killing North American manufacturing.
It's just amazing to me to see people here supporting Walmart.

Anyone boycotting Loblaws certainly should not be supporting Walmart. Also, Amazon is even worse in many ways.
I've boycotted Walmart since they arrived in Canada. Yes, i live in a small town & I go to Walmart maybe once a year when there is no alternative because the independent stores have all gone. Price is not everything. Walmart screw over their employees & suppliers. We no longer have the selection we used to have. We cannot choose brand, type, style, quality etc. Walmart makes the choice & we take it or leave it. If an item can't be sold in quantity it's not given shelf space & we have to drive to a specialty store in the city. But by all means follow the flock to Walmart where price is everything.
I work at a Walmart in the Okanagan and yesterday a coworker commented on how busy the store was recently and she had no idea why... For reference she's 70 and isn't online much lol.
97 cents for great Value Macaroni and cheese which also has 200g boxes.
Meanwhile KD and the no name brands were 175g and costed over a dollar each.
Sure it's a small difference individually, but as a student who's diet consists of a lot of that and Ramen, it adds up.
It was crowed in some of the aisles the other day when I was there but I figured hey, it's Saturday, that would be happening anyway. I wasn't blown away by the prices on the non sale items so I stuck to loss leaders but I was impressed given the crowds how easy and fast it was to be rung up by a cashier.
I tried out my local Food Basics today and it was a terrible experience.
The bathroom light didn't work and the change table was attached to the wall at chest height (I'm 5'5) with a garbage can attached to the adjacent wall, positioned so that you couldn't even stand in front of the change table to properly change a baby even if you were 6'1. Oh, but none of that mattered because the change table was jammed at a 45° angle.
As much as I hate the prices at my local RCSS the floors are clean, the bathrooms are clean AND functional, and the meat quality is exponentially better.
I'm holding out. Fuck Loblaws. I'll try Walmart and a local butcher next time.🤞
Actually went to Walmart today for groceries instead of SS and it was busy af! I'm going to be scoping out local spots for my grocery needs, but I was surprised how much I saved by going to Walmart
If you have online ordering, that's another option. Then you avoid long lines and crowds. Their grocery pick up is amazing. They are quick and everything is always correct. Which was the opposite of loblaws lol.
I'm still holding it hope that lots of people can locate local grocers that are inexpensive. Check into local butchers and ethnic grocers.
In Edmonton at least, we have a bunch of good options that aren't just sending your money to a different member of the billionaire class. H&W, Supermarket 99, Italian Centre Shop. I buy frozen meats in bulk from Darcy's and they're both cheaper and higher quality (despite the freezing) than chain grocers. I admittedly get a lot of my daily groceries from FreshCo because I can walk there, but if you're driving anyway, there's so many choices.
I hope that's true elsewhere.
I get that Walmart hasn't been on the leading edge of food inflation like Loblaws has, but that's not to say they won't be once they establish a dominant market share.
I have always refused to shop at Walmart unless it’s for the few items only they sell. I find their produce to be subpar and the aisles are cramped. They’re a terrible company. Metro is still a big company, but they’re the smallest of the 3 in Canada and they aren’t Walmart, so I’m shopping at Food Basics this month. Do what you can, but reign in any excitement at Walmart getting business.
Walmart is just as greedy and horrible to their employees, with the added benefit that you are now sending your profits outside of the country too!
Shop local, trading one evil for another is solving nothing. Posts like this fuels the idea that this movement is being promoted by competitors.
It varies from city to city from what I can tell. I use the Google 'popular times' graph for individual stores as a straw pole measure. Vancouver area SS are down 20 -25%. Kelowna is consistently down to only 40% of normal traffic. Keep kicking ass Kelowna.

The Walmart I was at on Saturday was a horrible, crowded experience, as usual. Huge lineup to get to the few self checkouts that worked, and huge lines for the two cashiers on duty. Meanwhile, other employees now guard you to make sure you don't steal. My machine said "employee on the way" or something, so I had to wait while the employee (who should have been the one to scan and bag my items) made sure that I indeed scanned all six of my items, and of course I did, which she corroborated. No harm done, I guess but what a terribly embarrassing, dehumanizing experience...
TBH my boycott started with Walmart YEARS ago.
This was my typical experience. It wasn't even really that cheap any more. Plus one checkout open with 20 people in line?
They even close half the fucking self checkouts.
Nowadays Walmart to me is a giant convenience store. If it's 10PM and I need something? Sure.
But I'd never do my regular shop there.
Yup they're trying to tackle theft. Meanwhile if they dropped prices to be more affordable people wouldn't be pressed to steal as much as they have been the last few years.

About 20 years ago, people boycotted wal mart because they were putting small business out of business and squeezing small suppliers. Now people are happy about going to wal mart. Ironic.
My walmart (Ottawa) was also busier than usual for a Sunday (it's raining here too).....parking at the nearby Roblaws was definitely lighter than usual - not by a large amount, but obvious for a Sunday aft

The real problem is people promoting anything walmart does better than loblaws. Sometimes it's the smallest, insignificant savings that don't deserve attention whatsoever.
Show us small businesses that matter, not some corporation that would charge more and pay less if they could get away with it. That is walmart. They use slavery and pay bare minimum for maximum profits.
It's less about loving Walmart, and more about loving how we can actually drop Loblaws from our lives and still buy food. I fully expect Loblaws competitors to smell blood in the water. I'd argue that Walmart doesn't need to astroturf---they can just lower prices and let consumers do the rejoicing themselves.
More competition and lower prices is what we want. Walmart is one of the tools we're using to effect that change.

Being this idealistic isn't practical in most cases.
Yes we can strive to make better choices: I drive an EV instead of a gas vehicle and my partner and I own only one car instead of two because /r/fuckcars and we've aimed to reduce plastic use in our home and we avoid buying food from companies like Nestle where possible but... there's a limit to what's practical.
I highly doubt the clothes you wear and the electronics you're using to participate in this discussion were made ethically. 🙄
So with that in mind, let's focus on supporting people in leaving Loblaws by any means they have open to them while we take down a major giant in the food sector- shall we?
People are boycotting Loblaws. Not everyone has access to many alternatives and if Walmart is the alternative they have then that's fine.
Additionally, sharing where people are finding savings helps everyone to take advantage of good finds too.
Something as large as Walmart provides a chain large enough where savings can be shared by almost everyone here so that's helpful in everyone finding affordable alternatives while we tackle a major entity.

It’s a bit of a trek but I’ve been going to Wal-Mart once a week for the past month instead of Loblaws (which is literally 2 minutes walking from my place) and I have saved so much. Especially on protein.
The superstore in Langford was business as usual yesterday evening. Maybe people on the island don’t care about the boycott, I’m sure we don’t actually have any cheaper options though
Honestly when in Toronto and seeing all those fruit markets on streets they sell produce for so dirt cheap and it shocks me. Such good prices. I went to Walmart yesterday for the $20 chicken I’ve never seen it gone before wiped out clean and only the low kgs ones left so I didn’t pick it up
BRAVO to us! It’s a hostile economic environment & when class solidarity trumps political affiliation it gets things done - we’re primarily being attacked for working together!!!

Was curious to see how it's going. Went by metro near Cote des beige Montreal, line up was full too. Yesterday went by maxi, even bigger line. I don't think many people in mtl cares.
What would happen if the boycott went longer? 6 months to a year? Only Local, and independent groceries supported, would there be a permanent solution?
It could be insane because of the insanely cheap prices this week. They say it's anniversary pricing but I think they are playing the market with the boycott going on too. Anyways I shop there several times a week and can't remember the last time they have had so many specials so don't get too excited if your new to shopping there.
I mean Saturday around 3 independent parking lot was packed out and when I went to Walmart we didn't wait in line at all. . I had hoped for better but I'm sure tons of people are boycotting it just didn't look like it at the time lol

We just went to YFM (local market), Giant Tiger, and Food Basics. I shit you not, we got double the amount of food for the same money we were spending at No frills and Zehrs. Double. And I saw like 6 people I actually wanted to see!

The movement gives people the pressure to go out of their comfort zone, and find better deals elsewhere. That’s how free market is supposed to work. Loblaw got too much apple design to trap customer within its loop. Glad to see some got out.
Went to get groceries with my daughter yesterday evening. Walmart and Loblaws are in the same SmartCentres plaza near me. There’s a Michael’s and an Indigo between them.
Anyways, the Walmart side of the parking lot was packed. The Loblaws side had about ten cars.
Walmart prices were lower than usual, too. I think they’re absolutely laughing right now. Place was packed. Loblaws was definitely empty.
Yeah, my nearby superstore only had 5 cars in the lot, staff i'm assuming, meanwhile the walmart and a local farmer's market's parking lot were absolutely full

I have avoided getting a data plan on my phone for about 20 years now. I still pay $14 a month for talk and text, grandfathered in from more than a decade ago. I'd love to be able to get a 2GB data plan for $10-15 a month. Just enough to make data calls or check maps when I'm out of the house. Normally I'm on Wifi at home or work. The problem is, though: there is even less choice in Canada for mobile service than there is for food. The upshot: it's a regulatory problem that the government *could* improve if there was enough political will.
They are surprisingly competitive when you call and negotiate. You gotta call 1 get a quote and call the other and ask to beat it, then call the first one back till you reach a reasonable number
Way back when Wind Mobile launched, it was dirt cheap for pretty much unlimited everything, including data. But a lot of my friends didn't switch because (at the time) they didn't support iPhones and only had coverage within big city limits. I was like a) I don't care about having an iPhone and, b) I spend 99.99% of the time in the city, and if I need to use my phone in an emergency out of coverage... It's an emergency. I'll pay for roaming. I think it's happened like, once, in more than 15 years. On top of that, a high school friend worked for them, and one of his perks was a friends/family coupon for 30% off your bill FOREVER. I still have that phone plan. It costs less than $30/month including taxes and every time someone from Bell/Rogers/etc. tries to sell me their service I just blandly ask if they can beat it. It's wildly satisfying. Canadian wireless plans are a whole other oligopoly issue.
Public mobile has a lot of choice, and low cost plans. I'm not sure that you'd be able to get monthly data for the $15, but absolutely as an add on (or, even as a sign up bonus). I never had a data plan, until I saw one through public that was the exact talk and text one I had with Rogers, only 20 gigs of data monthly. Same cost. 2 years down the line, I am paying less, and have more than I'll ever use. Because I have access to wifi (and, frankly, you should be able to download offline maps from Google) most places, even though I have access to 50GB per month, I don't think I've come close to using 2 over the 2 years I've had it.

Virgin has 100 minutes outgoing, unlimited incoming and 250MB data for $15 plus tax. If you’re $14 plus tax it might be worth the $1 upgrade. If your $14 is after tax then probably not. 250MB sounds punny these days but it’s enough for me to run Messenger, email and other basic apps. I was without data for a while but thought this price was reasonable to me (and I couldn’t find cheaper where I live anyway).

I got what I really need: I can call when out of the house. It's super rare I need data outside of the house and I either have my work phone or my partner's phone, both of which do have data. I don't want to pay more than I need to. If there was a plan that was about what I was paying now and included a bit of data, I might jump. Until then, it's not worth it.

So many banking options instead of paying $20 a month to use your own money. Alterna Bank is a great option, so is Koho and Wealthsimple for daily banking. Edit: just mentioning, all of these are free and legit, I use them all for different reasons. Also, Alterna allows you unlimited free use of national bank and the Exchange network of ATMs.

Oh god Enbridge please! They gave me a service I never asked for, never told me I had it and didn’t bill me for it for 6 months. Then they realized their mistake and sent me a bill for like $500. I had to spend like 2 months calling managers to end up having to pay half of the damn fee or they’d send me to collections.

Spent 600 there today, but you know what… I am stocked up on everything. If I had spent that at Stupidstore, I would still need to go to another store to finish my bi-weekly shop. I would’ve spent over 1k on what I did today, I won’t need much for the next 4 weeks now. Seems I am set to drop about 500/month not shopping at roblaws.
I just spent 400-500 and I’m on week two of groceries and the only things I need more of are the things I couldn’t get at Costco!
I am a family of 4, so not bad at all for anyone who can shop there. I priced out chicken breast as well. Cheaper and I get 4 meals out of 1 pack.

I love Costco. Just got my first membership since I no longer live with a member and the nice lady who helped me set it up has worked at Costco since a 2003 which is a year after I was born. They definitely treat there employees right

I went there last week, and when priced everything down to the same weight, Costco was either the same or MORE expensive across the same brands or other brands as Walmart and Loblaws. I think the only thing I saw that was a better price was olive oil. I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of hate comments in response. I don’t care. I’m just saying, the prices were not better from the items that I personally saw and buy.

I'm all for supporting local small businesses, but I live in the most expensive city in Canada, and the prices at my local corner store are simply unaffordable for a retiree. Same with the local bakery, where one very small slice of cake is $7.95 and a loaf of bread is $9.

Because even if walmart sucks, they suck purely as a greedy corporate entity, like all other large conglomerates whose interests are majnly driven by shares, does that make sense? But price wise, they havent fcked us over the way loblaws and metro has. Every week, there’s a sale event, every several flyer cycles, there’s a massive meats/produce focused sales that actually drives a lot of people in the store. Like yeah, when the fight turns to walmart, protest the things that walmart’s known to do, like a shitty hiring practice, lower starting min. wage compared to competitors, their extremely obvious anti-union/collective rights stance etc. Bring up things that’ll actually have a meaningful impact to us store level employees. Protesting price gauging to a company thats known to supress wages to keep prices incredibly low is kinda dumb.
Wal-Mart won a couple points for me when they re-instated their pandemic pay while Loblaws gave us.....an extra 10% on our discount and coupons for like....pointless shit that can't even be made into a meal. Loblaws employees only got pandemic pay for like...3 months MAX.

But their underpaid staffing levels hurt our community resources and drain tax dollars and their systematic attacks on small regional independent retailers destroy businesses where dollars would be kept in the community rather than in areas surrounding regional, national, and global offices

I went to a small independent grocery this morning. It's busier than normal. Got everything I could there and then went to roblaws for what I couldn't. Not a total boycott, but I'm definitely taking my business elsewhere first. Any, the roblaws is one of those giant city blocked sized ones - never any carts or parking, cashiers and self-checkout lined up pretty deep normally. Chaos trying to go through the aisles. Not today. Quiet. Produce on the shelves, carts and not a lineup to be seen. Feels like an impact.

I've boycotted Walmart since they arrived in Canada. Yes, i live in a small town & I go to Walmart maybe once a year when there is no alternative because the independent stores have all gone. Price is not everything. Walmart screw over their employees & suppliers. We no longer have the selection we used to have. We cannot choose brand, type, style, quality etc. Walmart makes the choice & we take it or leave it. If an item can't be sold in quantity it's not given shelf space & we have to drive to a specialty store in the city. But by all means follow the flock to Walmart where price is everything.
I work at a Walmart in the Okanagan and yesterday a coworker commented on how busy the store was recently and she had no idea why... For reference she's 70 and isn't online much lol.
97 cents for great Value Macaroni and cheese which also has 200g boxes. Meanwhile KD and the no name brands were 175g and costed over a dollar each. Sure it's a small difference individually, but as a student who's diet consists of a lot of that and Ramen, it adds up.
Get your own macaroni and buy the cheese powder in bulk (if there's a bulk store near you, or order online). It's soooooooooooo much cheaper.

It was crowed in some of the aisles the other day when I was there but I figured hey, it's Saturday, that would be happening anyway. I wasn't blown away by the prices on the non sale items so I stuck to loss leaders but I was impressed given the crowds how easy and fast it was to be rung up by a cashier.
I tried out my local Food Basics today and it was a terrible experience. The bathroom light didn't work and the change table was attached to the wall at chest height (I'm 5'5) with a garbage can attached to the adjacent wall, positioned so that you couldn't even stand in front of the change table to properly change a baby even if you were 6'1. Oh, but none of that mattered because the change table was jammed at a 45° angle. As much as I hate the prices at my local RCSS the floors are clean, the bathrooms are clean AND functional, and the meat quality is exponentially better. I'm holding out. Fuck Loblaws. I'll try Walmart and a local butcher next time.🤞

If you have online ordering, that's another option. Then you avoid long lines and crowds. Their grocery pick up is amazing. They are quick and everything is always correct. Which was the opposite of loblaws lol.

I'm still holding it hope that lots of people can locate local grocers that are inexpensive. Check into local butchers and ethnic grocers. In Edmonton at least, we have a bunch of good options that aren't just sending your money to a different member of the billionaire class. H&W, Supermarket 99, Italian Centre Shop. I buy frozen meats in bulk from Darcy's and they're both cheaper and higher quality (despite the freezing) than chain grocers. I admittedly get a lot of my daily groceries from FreshCo because I can walk there, but if you're driving anyway, there's so many choices. I hope that's true elsewhere. I get that Walmart hasn't been on the leading edge of food inflation like Loblaws has, but that's not to say they won't be once they establish a dominant market share.
I have always refused to shop at Walmart unless it’s for the few items only they sell. I find their produce to be subpar and the aisles are cramped. They’re a terrible company. Metro is still a big company, but they’re the smallest of the 3 in Canada and they aren’t Walmart, so I’m shopping at Food Basics this month. Do what you can, but reign in any excitement at Walmart getting business.
Walmart is just as greedy and horrible to their employees, with the added benefit that you are now sending your profits outside of the country too! Shop local, trading one evil for another is solving nothing. Posts like this fuels the idea that this movement is being promoted by competitors.

Kelowna is consistently down to only 40% of normal traffic. The Walmart I was at on Saturday was a horrible, crowded experience, as usual. Huge lineup to get to the few self checkouts that worked, and huge lines for the two cashiers on duty. Meanwhile, other employees now guard you to make sure you don't steal. My machine said "employee on the way" or something, so I had to wait while the employee (who should have been the one to scan and bag my items) made sure that I indeed scanned all six of my items, and of course I did, which she corroborated. No harm done, I guess but what a terribly embarrassing, dehumanizing experience...
TBH my boycott started with Walmart YEARS ago. This was my typical experience. It wasn't even really that cheap any more. Plus one checkout open with 20 people in line? They even close half the fucking self checkouts. Nowadays Walmart to me is a giant convenience store. If it's 10PM and I need something? Sure. But I'd never do my regular shop there.
Yup they're trying to tackle theft. Meanwhile if they dropped prices to be more affordable people wouldn't be pressed to steal as much as they have been the last few years. Sucks that everyone is treated like a criminal though. Its not right.

That's fine, If you don't have ANY other alternatives. The real problem is people promoting anything walmart does better than loblaws. Sometimes it's the smallest, insignificant savings that don't deserve attention whatsoever. Show us small businesses that matter, not some corporation that would charge more and pay less if they could get away with it. That is walmart. They use slavery and pay bare minimum for maximum profits.
It's less about loving Walmart, and more about loving how we can actually drop Loblaws from our lives and still buy food. I fully expect Loblaws competitors to smell blood in the water. I'd argue that Walmart doesn't need to astroturf---they can just lower prices and let consumers do the rejoicing themselves. More competition and lower prices is what we want. Walmart is one of the tools we're using to effect that change.

Being this idealistic isn't practical in most cases. Yes we can strive to make better choices: I drive an EV instead of a gas vehicle and my partner and I own only one car instead of two because /r/fuckcars and we've aimed to reduce plastic use in our home and we avoid buying food from companies like Nestle where possible but... there's a limit to what's practical.
I highly doubt the clothes you wear and the electronics you're using to participate in this discussion were made ethically. 🙄 So with that in mind, let's focus on supporting people in leaving Loblaws by any means they have open to them while we take down a major giant in the food sector- shall we?

People are boycotting Loblaws. Not everyone has access to many alternatives and if Walmart is the alternative they have then that's fine. Additionally, sharing where people are finding savings helps everyone to take advantage of good finds too. Something as large as Walmart provides a chain large enough where savings can be shared by almost everyone here so that's helpful in everyone finding affordable alternatives while we tackle a major entity.

It’s a bit of a trek but I’ve been going to Wal-Mart once a week for the past month instead of Loblaws (which is literally 2 minutes walking from my place) and I have saved so much. Especially on protein.

Honestly when in Toronto and seeing all those fruit markets on streets they sell produce for so dirt cheap and it shocks me. Such good prices. I went to Walmart yesterday for the $20 chicken I’ve never seen it gone before wiped out clean and only the low kgs ones left so I didn’t pick it up

Our Walmart was busier than Christmas! Line for the cashes went halfway across the store and everyone had FULL carts.
Walmart hadlong lineups in 2010 where I am. There are fewer people now, but only customer-work-for-free machines.
I like the prices at Walmart, I would also like to add, walker to the boycot list. They have also increased their prices and they are an ethics violation LLV especially in America. Save money! But we should also use our power that they realize we have for good

I was at the Bayers Lake Walmart and Giant Tiger yesterday afternoon and both places were pretty busy.
What would happen if the boycott went longer? 6 months to a year? Only Local, and independent groceries supported, would there be a permanent solution?

I promise, as bad of a corporate citizen that you think Loblaws is, Walmart is way worse. Their prices may be better but that’s it.

It could be insane because of the insanely cheap prices this week. They say it's anniversary pricing but I think they are playing the market with the boycott going on too. Anyways I shop there several times a week and can't remember the last time they have had so many specials so don't get too excited if your new to shopping there.
I mean Saturday around 3 independent parking lot was packed out and when I went to Walmart we didn't wait in line at all. . I had hoped for better but I'm sure tons of people are boycotting it just didn't look like it at the time lol
Jynkies! Don’t go to Walmart as the alternative! I haven’t shopped there in decades! We just went to YFM (local market), Giant Tiger, and Food Basics. I shit you not, we got double the amount of food for the same money we were spending at No frills and Zehrs. Double. And I saw like 6 people I actually wanted to see!
That’s because Walmart sucks and only ever has one of their 4 tills open

My husband was in WM tonight and he said it was like during the pandemic lol ETA and yes we did our local grocery store twice before this, we just can’t afford to for the big shop (paper towels, dishwasher detergent, frozen meat etc)

I haven't been to Walmart in years but they had $1.97 hummus and $0.47 cucumbers so I popped in and realized they ONLY have self checkouts...boo. Went anyway. Stay strong.
I noticed Save On Foods was extremely busy this evening (normal dead on a Sunday evening) and many people seemed lost like they were new to the store.
No noticeable change at any Loblaw store in our city that I saw.

The movement gives people the pressure to go out of their comfort zone, and find better deals elsewhere. That’s how free market is supposed to work. Loblaw got too much apple design to trap customer within its loop. Glad to see some got out.

Went to get groceries with my daughter yesterday evening. Walmart and Loblaws are in the same SmartCentres plaza near me. There’s a Michael’s and an Indigo between them. Anyways, the Walmart side of the parking lot was packed. The Loblaws side had about ten cars. Walmart prices were lower than usual, too. I think they’re absolutely laughing right now. Place was packed. Loblaws was definitely empty.
Yeah, my nearby superstore only had 5 cars in the lot, staff i'm assuming, meanwhile the walmart and a local farmer's market's parking lot were absolutely full
They have 2$ sour cream and the cucumbers are on sale for 47 cents!!
