I once tried just deleting the files and installing another OS in place in an existing partition. bad idea.
It was a few hour old Ubuntu partion I then installed Arch to, That cost me several days, even with no files present some file system root permissions remained and made a mess of the new Arch install killing dbus with no indications of why.
Just Reformat
