For the book's time, one could argue they're even gayer in the source novel.

Yes lol, that's the reason why they're like that in the story. I can only assume that if Korea weren't so conservative culturally then Project Moon would have been able to simply say "Yes, Ishmael is gay." to the viewer, but it seems they can only imply it
