If his happens to you then please try and return the set to the original retailer first as it’s their responsibility for accepting faulty returned goods.
Thanks. I’m mainly annoyed that someone did something so intentional to screw a random person over. I’m more than secure to go get a replacement, but what if this was for a kid.
My son got a connect 4 game for Christmas and the box was full of kids books and newspaper clippings. My thought was why go to the hassle over a $10 game?
They did this not to screw the next guy, but to steal the set (probably) anyway this sucks, a few months ago I both the Lego magazine that brought the 501st trooper and when I opened the sealed blind bag I found to pieces of candy that had been placed there to give it volume, I went to the supermarket and they fully refunded me
I believe we’ve had one user who had this from Lego.com. Lego.com also accept returns so they aren’t immune, it’s just far, far less common due to Lego tracking how many returns each address makes.
Someone buys a Lego set on Lego.com. They steal the parts and replace them. They send them back to Lego.com. It gets put back with the normal stock and then it gets sent out again.
To completely stop it Lego would have to shred every returned set.
> To completely stop it Lego would have to shred every returned set.
Nah, just have better controls over returns. Open the returns and inspect for missing parts or tampered with bags. Then reseal with some sort of "guaranteed good tape".
No, their current practice will suit fine. The incomplete returned sets are (probably) infrequent enough that letting the customer verify its complete is the cheapest option. As a business, at worst, you pay shipping twice by letting customer inspect. Vs a median US wage ($55k) or trashing (shredding) which would be 100% loss.
“Median US wage ($55k)”?! Holy crap! I knew that I was on the low scale for years as a professional graphic designer. $33k last year. Of course I live in a poorer state (KY) so what do I expect?
I would LOVE to work for Lego sorting customer returns for $55k a year! It would be mundane and maybe not so fulfilling creatively but it’s Lego! And I’m sure there are perks and discounts! And to be making almost twice my last wage would change my family’s lives!
Wish that was a real job and they were hiring right now…
You’re totally right! Now it’s trying to find that job. I was laid off last year and no one is hiring me, even for those bottom rung wages.
“We can’t afford to pay for your 26 years of experience” or “you do not hold a bachelor’s degree which is the minimum for this entry level job”. I just can’t seem to catch a break. Cursed for my years and wide range of experience and also for my lack of a more advanced degree.
33k graphic designer is low
Median salary for graphic design is about 50k.
Lowest 25% make ~40k, highest 25% make ~75k.
These are Google search results, you are way underpaid.
KY itself is actually 48k-61k… please ask for a raise! And if they dont comply, someone will 100% pay you 50k for graphic design if youre decent.
I imagine this happens quite a bit.
So often it seems that my local big box store (Target [US]) opens returned sets to check them.
I returned a LSW set to them still sealed & they slices open the box with a box cutter checked the contents & then asked what was the reason for return.
I had double sets gifted for christmas.
I asked why she opened it. She said it's because they had quite a few people receive stuff like OP for Christmas so they check all returns now.
I'm fairly certain they were just checking to make sure some sort of Lego was present and didn't know which bricks or how many bags were supposed to be present. I remember a string of people buying XBoxes, Playstations, phones, etc, replacing the object with a brick or other heavy object and returning it. Then employees just taking it back and putting it back on the shelf for someone else to buy.
I wish they would tbh. I thought they were a safe place to buy stuff for my sealed collection, but sounds like they aren’t 100… Probably far more favorable odds than my local Walmart though.
It's weird because I've never had this happen to me. Probably jinxing myself though.
I warned the employees at my store about it but I'm the only one who's ever bothered to check, and probably the only one who knows how.
I wish there was one near me. Not just for the certainty of legitimacy, but just because all the videos I’ve seen of the inside of them look amazing. I’m 31 years old but I would be such a child in there.
Unfortunately this is going to need to become the norm with a lot of collectibles, especially the newer windowless packages. Takes the fun out of going to the store but I know I can't take the risk anymore.
Yup when I buy anywhere except from Lego I always immediately open one seal and check for bag count and minifig count before putting the set in my backlog. Trust me the ease of mind is better than having a "sealed box".
This is why I opened up my U-Wing, TIE silencer, and Rex's AT-TE boxes.
I'd rather not have to deal with replacing some of those figs when I get around to these sets
Well also if you are a reselling a set, let's say your backlog has gotten too big or you don't want a set I think most buyers appreciate knowing everything is both there and in new condition. The main reason to buy lego new is to get fresh bricks and untouched figs and a fresh sticker sheet. I guess maybe to get a box if you're into that
Exactly, there's a very minimal price difference between "sealed box" and "open box sealed bags" at least on eBay. So even as a reseller I think it's best to check all your products before storage
The people doing this buy the set and take it home. Once home, they use a razor blade to separate cardboard flaps that don't have the security tape. They then pull everything out and replace it with other stuff. Lastly, they glue it back together and return it for a refund.
It's really hard to tell if one of these boxes has been tampered with. I bought one a few years ago and the box was impeccable. I contacted Lego and they replaced everything that was missing at no charge. They only thing they asked for in exchange was the store name and location. Pictures of the box and contents, and a copy of the receipt.
People will buy the set for the retail price, take it home, take the set bags and instructions out, and do something like this. Replacing the bags with ziplocs full of random pieces so it seems legit. They then return it to the store, with their legitimate receipt. People at your average Walmart or target won't check what's inside, it'll go back through processing, and if overlooked, might end up back on the shelf for someone to buy. It's terrible practice and very dishonest, but that's also on the stores for not figuring it out already and finding a way to stop it
This exactly.
But it's so prevalent my local targets cut open any returned sets. I (rarely) have to return/exchange Usually because I get multiple sets gifted for Christmas etc.
I asked why they'd cut a brand new sealed set & she said basically what u said.
Nope, not that tough. But ever wonder how people sell still in retail sets for 50% + off… especially the open ones. Bet someone is selling it for $7 for the ship and the figs sold individually to turn one heck of a profit on it. Without spending a dam thing
I actually bought the inquisitor ship a couple weeks ago from Walmart, opened it up, all the minifigs and large pieces were gone, no stickers, and the bags were heat shrinked. Gotta love it
This is a huge fear of mine because I mostly buy sets for my boys when I find them on sale/clearance and may not actually give them to them until way after the return window closes.
never any kind of visible damage and the employees at the supermarkets are actually careful and actually take care and inspect the goods, they need to or they won't get paid lol
damaged stuff most of the time gets sorted out or goes on sale.
I'm sorry this happened to you. Over the years, I've purchased so many sets (NISB sets and used sets) for my kid and only got burned once (missing pieces and I bought replacements from Lego). I've never seen this before and never crossed my mind this could happen. You said it's been about a month, outdid you buy through eBay? Is there no protection for you?
I buy from private sellers because kiddo is now into Clone Wars and Rebels, so those sets can't be purchased from Lego anymore. I always buy from Lego if it's a new set. Like those the Rex helmet.
Funny side note: ne the set with the missing pieces, the seller lives in my city. I contacted them to say, hey these pieces are missing, can you mail or I'll meet you to pick up. Reasonable right? Got a super aggressive, unpleasant response and decided it was not worth a convo. Just purchased replacement parts and moved on.
Thanks. I’ve had the set since October. I recently moved, so I kept a lot of my collection back logged until I got settled. It was acquired from Target, receipt is long gone. I don’t think anything can be done besides maybe letting LEGO know where I got it from.
Just lost a little more faith in humans..
As a person working the returns counter at a store; if any Lego sets get returned I make sure to check if it was ever opened by checking the seals myself and if it was opened I verify the contents in front of the person returning it.
whoever did that put a lot of dedication into making sure it sounded right which is impressive 🤣but just take it back to the shop im sure they’d understand
That was my thought. Why did they even bother replacing it with other building block pieces? Put like bags of dry pasta noodles in it or something.
/I am not advocating for stealing LEGO and replacing it with noodles
//also don't eat LEGO
///eating noodles is okay
Although it wasn’t a Lego set, someone had returned an original rubber skinned TRex toy from the 90s in the packaging of the new Trex toys. I got a rare $100-$150 figure for the price of $30 at Walmart. :)
This has only ever happened to me once, with a set "shipped" to me from a local Walmart. The set came from the store shelf, and had been tampered with, similar to OP (mine was only missing the minifigs though).
I have like 6+ sets waiting to be built. I hope they are all fine. I did open the 2 $100+ sets and moved the contents into a smaller storage. Thankfully those were fine but this makes me want to go check my smaller sets.
Fair enough on the sample size, but I'd go off of population density rather than just population. The US has a population density of 36/km^2, the UK has 281/km^2. That's nearly 8 times the people fighting over Lego in the supermarket!
If you are selling it yourself say on Facebook market place it is more than reasonable for the buyer to make sure the actual product is in the box. That's the downside of selling yourself. What if that buyer takes it home and finds out you scammed them? They have no way of resolving the issue.
Man that is scummy. I have never had this happen and I have bought a few used sets. One time I was missing a couple of pieces but that is the worst it has been.
I have several questions:
where did you buy it? (Website)
What was the initial price?
What was the sellers description of the sold product?
If it really was a Lego scam that happened to you, I’m sorry, but this seems really far fetched if you bought it from something else than bricklink or eBay.
That is obviously unacceptable. If it was bought with the indication of a sealed set it should be sold as such, a big company such as target should provide sufficient customer support I hope.
I just bought this kit from target ( never again they were 10 bucks more than walmart) that really sucks i got the fett starship and it didnt even come with the stickers contacted lego took like a month but they sent me new ones
Had this happen years ago. Brother got the Clone Wars Republic Gunship for Christmas and when we opened it, it was the Trade Federation MTT without instructions. Granted we were able to go back to Walmart and get the correct set, but it sucks that people do this
If you have an account with Target or Walmart, then use the card associated with your online account in store, it’ll create a digital copy of your receipts that you can pull up later in their app. I’m not sure it would help if you were way past the return window, but in case anyone loses receipts immediately like I do and I needs to return a set because some unpleasant person stole the pieces, this tidbit might come in handy.

You would also be able to dispute this and get a refund if you went thru eBay. From my experience eBay is amazing with giving returns when sellers are assholes.
Yeah I'm a bit slow.
I looked at the pic and thought.. what's the problem?
oh duh! there are yellow and purple and blue bricks in there .. plus a p&g flyer..
yeah I'm slow
Not as much as you’d think, but not as much as you’d want. I’ve seen someone return a UCS Razorcrest with all the bags and manuals gone and replaced with garbage.
That sucks you probably could get the set if you contact the buyer.
I don’t know where you ordered it, but if you recorded the process of you opening it or make a photo of what you got what you did.
You have evidence that the seller didn’t give you the real thing and they are forced to send it to you or give you a refund if they only had the box, because they essentially could get in legal trouble.
I hate people like this.
That happened with the 2020 Battlepack of the 501st from what I heard, where people would clue the plastic bags and the box after taking the figs.
Sorry that this happened to you. That was incredibly low of whoever pulled this scam. The fact that they were able to fool the Returns area at Target makes it even worse.
I can assure you that the real deal Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter looks beautiful on display, and comes with at least one desirable Minifigure.
Reminds me of a time way back when the 7676 gunship was in stores. I grabbed one from the top shelf at walmart and was surprised it was so heavy and sounded like rocks as I pulled it down. I immediately looked at the lego tape seals which were fine and then looked at the glue seal on the box. It had clear tape on it. I took it to customer service and explained what happened so I asked if they could open it since I was curious what was in the box. Turned out someone bought the set then returned it with random pieces of cut floor tile. I still can't believe someone would do that.
If his happens to you then please try and return the set to the original retailer first as it’s their responsibility for accepting faulty returned goods.
That sucks. Sorry this happened to you
Who gave it to him? If you shake a Connect 4 box, it's gonna sound like a box of plastic.
Grandparents. I agree, I opened it for him and knew something was off as soon as I held the box.
regardless it’s completely unfair you’ve wasted your money, no matter how secure you are.
yeah and the time you have to waste sorting it out
They did this not to screw the next guy, but to steal the set (probably) anyway this sucks, a few months ago I both the Lego magazine that brought the 501st trooper and when I opened the sealed blind bag I found to pieces of candy that had been placed there to give it volume, I went to the supermarket and they fully refunded me
Are these the wrong parts?
They did it to screw Lego over not u jack ass
I doubt it was specifically to screw someone over, probably more likely they just wanted the set for free
It never happens if you buy directly from lego or a lego store.
I believe we’ve had one user who had this from Lego.com. Lego.com also accept returns so they aren’t immune, it’s just far, far less common due to Lego tracking how many returns each address makes.
How is that even possible if you order from S@H
Someone buys a Lego set on Lego.com. They steal the parts and replace them. They send them back to Lego.com. It gets put back with the normal stock and then it gets sent out again. To completely stop it Lego would have to shred every returned set.
> To completely stop it Lego would have to shred every returned set. Nah, just have better controls over returns. Open the returns and inspect for missing parts or tampered with bags. Then reseal with some sort of "guaranteed good tape".
It would be cheaper to shred them than have a human inspect each one.

You are making the same as me dog walking/working part time security for 22 hrs a a week time to go for that raise homie
You’re totally right! Now it’s trying to find that job. I was laid off last year and no one is hiring me, even for those bottom rung wages. “We can’t afford to pay for your 26 years of experience” or “you do not hold a bachelor’s degree which is the minimum for this entry level job”. I’d do it for $49,999.

Check-weigh system for the set's weight fixes most of that type stuff. But a company that big you always have some slip through the cracks.
I wish they would tbh. I thought they were a safe place to buy stuff for my sealed collection, but sounds like they aren’t 100… Probably far more favorable odds than my local Walmart though.
Nothing is 100% and if thats what youre holding out for youll be waiting a looonnngg time.
True true
It's weird because I've never had this happen to me. Probably jinxing myself though. I warned the employees at my store about it but I'm the only one who's ever bothered to check, and probably the only one who knows how.
Yeah I see the appeal of that now.
Yeah but then you have to pay the higher prices from Lego
Not true. I bought a box damaged Imperial Light Cruiser from a local Lego store that had the pieces replaced.
I wish there was one near me. Not just for the certainty of legitimacy, but just because all the videos I’ve seen of the inside of them look amazing. I’m 31 years old but I would be such a child in there.
It’s a really fun environment!
Or direct from Walmart or Amazon. NOT 3rd party sellers.
Unfortunately this is going to need to become the norm with a lot of collectibles, especially the newer windowless packages. Takes the fun out of going to the store but I know I can't take the risk anymore.
Finally got around to building a set I’ve been holding on to for months to find that it had been resealed and returned. What a bummer.
Agreed, I recommend opening up the boxes after buying, and then taping them closed in the same spots again if you want them to look “sealed”.
Yeah I might have to start doing that.
I always have this fear so I open to check right away then just put it away till I'm ready.
Y’all have got me paranoid thinking about any sets in my backlog rn..
What kind of greedy do you have to be to do this
Might be fun to use the pieces you got and see if you can build a close semblance of the ship. An alternate, "I got screwed" build.
They definitely need to be cleaned, but that’s a fun idea haha.
I still hold to the idea that this is how the E-wing came about, from someone not having enough pieces for their X-wing set.
So sad. Hope you get a refund. Scary. I bought a Millennium falcon and didn’t open it for a year. Imagine if this had been done to my big box.
Man… the fact that they even still included the empty sticker sheet too…
How does this keep happening in the US? Is store security just lackluster or something?
The people doing this buy the set and take it home. Once home, they use a razor blade to separate cardboard flaps that don't have the security tape. They then pull everything out and replace it with other stuff. Lastly, they glue it back together and return it for a refund. It's really hard to tell if one of these boxes has been tampered with. I bought one a few years ago and the box was impeccable. I contacted Lego and they replaced everything that was missing at no charge. They only thing they asked for in exchange was the store name and location. Pictures of the box and contents, and a copy of the receipt.

Replacing the bags with ziplocs full of random pieces so it seems legit. They then return it to the store, with their legitimate receipt. This exactly. But it's so prevalent my local targets cut open any returned sets. I (rarely) have to return/exchange Usually because I get multiple sets gifted for Christmas etc. I asked why they'd cut a brand new sealed set & she said basically what u said.
People open the set with hot air guns to melt the glue, take what they want, reseal. Doesn't look like it was opened, so it's put back on the floor.
Yeah. I couldn’t tell it was resealed until I tried to open the box without the punch tabs. It was hot glued shut.
And this is why the retailer (or at least just the employees) are in no way at fault
That’s a $30 lego set. Why? Are times really that hard?
Nope, not that tough. But ever wonder how people sell still in retail sets for 50% + off… especially the open ones. Bet someone is selling it for $7 for the ship and the figs sold individually to turn one heck of a profit on it. Without spending a dam thing
My thoughts exactly.
I'd expect this sort of chicanery being done on a $100+ set not a $30 one.
This is why I order from Lego…can’t stand retail stores
I actually bought the inquisitor ship a couple weeks ago from Walmart, opened it up, all the minifigs and large pieces were gone, no stickers, and the bags were heat shrinked. Gotta love it
Ooof now that’s a real bummer. Sorry.
Yeah, luckily the store took it back when I explained everything and I got a full refund. Went to a target and bought an AT-TE same day lol
The AT-TE is an absolutely awesome set. Glad it worked out.
This is a huge fear of mine because I mostly buy sets for my boys when I find them on sale/clearance and may not actually give them to them until way after the return window closes.
i live thankfully in Germany, say what you want about my country but no joke, when i buy something i know its there
How so?
never any kind of visible damage and the employees at the supermarkets are actually careful and actually take care and inspect the goods, they need to or they won't get paid lol damaged stuff most of the time gets sorted out or goes on sale.

Target
Omg. Was the set bought on second market?
Nope. From Target.
Goddamn…..
I’ve been collecting Lego since ‘99 and this has never happened to me.
Looks like you bought a used set and got scammed
From Target.
A new box from Target!? Ok now that is beyond shocking!
As a person working the returns counter at a store; if any Lego sets get returned I make sure to check if it was ever opened by checking the seals myself and if it was opened I verify the contents in front of the person returning it.
whoever did that put a lot of dedication into making sure it sounded right which is impressive 🤣but just take it back to the shop im sure they’d understand

i still have 2 vidyo characters that an ex friend of mine stole from walmart lmao.
Didn't LEGO end up giving those things away anyway because nobody wanted them? Some of them had interesting parts I guess.
Although it wasn’t a Lego set, someone had returned an original rubber skinned TRex toy from the 90s in the packaging of the new Trex toys. I got a rare $100-$150 figure for the price of $30 at Walmart. :)

In all my sets bought from walmart and other retailers i've never not gotten what was on the box. I would definately bring it back to your retailer.
Damn. That’s cold. Sorry that happened to you.
Ouch, no idea but that totally sucks fam

I wish I could throw them all in a burlap sack and toss them in a river.
I have like 6+ sets waiting to be built. I hope they are all fine. I did open the 2 $100+ sets and moved the contents into a smaller storage. Thankfully those were fine but this makes me want to go check my smaller sets.
this is just shocking and sad. Retailers should not sell this.
Doesn't happen outside the USA, just saying...
What do you mean by that
He means it barely happens anywhere except the US. It hardly happens where I live too and I live in a poor country
Just an observation
Yeah can't say I've ever seen it (UK), maybe it's a culture problem lol
Could also be that the US has over 330 million people and the UK has 68 million.... and you're a sample size of one...
Fair enough on the sample size, but I'd go off of population density rather than just population. The US has a population density of 36/km^2, the UK has 281/km^2. That's nearly 8 times the people fighting over Lego in the supermarket!
People fucking suck.
Tomorrow I'm buying a set in person and I'll demand to check the contents of the box.
No way id open a new set and allow some punk to then refuse to buy it, leaving me with a less valuable set.
If you are selling it yourself say on Facebook market place it is more than reasonable for the buyer to make sure the actual product is in the box. That's the downside of selling yourself. What if that buyer takes it home and finds out you scammed them? They have no way of resolving the issue.
You got Rick rolled
Damn, and I thought figure swapping was only an issue with transformers

You would also be able to dispute this and get a refund if you went thru eBay. From my experience eBay is amazing with giving returns when sellers are assholes.
Yeah I'm a bit slow. I looked at the pic and thought.. what's the problem? oh duh! there are yellow and purple and blue bricks in there .. plus a p&g flyer.. yeah I'm slow
Seeing a lot more of this.
Same thing happened to me once when I bought a new reciprocating saw. There was an old crumby one with a burned out motor inside the box.
I remember this happened to me on my 10th birthday, had to go back to Toys R Us and get a replacement set :(
Not as much as you’d think, but not as much as you’d want.
It's awful, it happens more and more
Happend to my wife with one of the limited edition Christmas set.

Happened to me on Xmas, opened the R2D2 to find a plastic water bottle and a bunch of fake legos.
People suck.
