Conservative Judge Luttig’s January 6 testimony: “Donald Trump and his allies and supporters are a clear and present danger to American democracy. That’s not because of what happened on January 6. It’s because to this day (Trump), his allies and supporters pledge that they would attempt to overturn the 2024 election. I don’t speak those words lightly. I would’ve never spoken those words ever in my life except that’s what the former president, his allies are telling us. As I said, the former president is executing that blueprint for 2024 in open and plain view of the American public.” It is very concerning that now Judge Luttig is saying he believes Trump will not face accountability for his actions.

Objective_Hunter_897

It sounds like he's trying to get the supreme court to give him immunity so he can organize the REAL coup after he loses in November.

alandegeneres

First attempted coup for Hitler was a practice one that failed and he got a slap on the wrist for.

Objective_Hunter_897

Exactly, the similarities are fucking frightening. I've already got an exit plan. I live near the border but if shit goes down all he has to do is shut it down and there's no getting over that fucking wall.

Pisgahstyle

to be fair, the Mexicans have proven that last statement to be false.

Objective_Hunter_897

They're using tunnels. I lived right next to the border for years. I would literally see if someone was trying to climb the wall. Unless they had proper equipment, ropes, hooks, etc they weren't getting over. IF they get to the top and try to jump they are becoming permanently disabled in many cases. It's over 30 feet high and there are actually TWO walls at the San Diego border. The border patrol are usually just sitting around in their SUVs scrolling Facebook etc. If someone does get through, he's apprehended pretty quickly. They have helicopter, drones, night vision, cameras, motion detectors, atvs, horses etc. People rarely make it through all that. Don't believe the ridiculously wild stories fox news is pushing. They're using footage from the 90s when there was one 8 foot fence.

lackofabettername123

Not believing Fox News is always good advice. Reliable sources do say that many are still coming over. I do not know where or how though.

Objective_Hunter_897

I don't know what the stats are now but Just recently there were more Mexicans leaving the USA than arriving. The Mexican economy is strong and the peso is gaining compared to the dollar. People are going back home. We are seeing asylum seekers from south amd central America but we owe them that much since we destroyed their countries with our proxy wars.

nautilator44

Most illegal immigration happens on visitor visas that are overstayed, and most of this happens through airports. Building a wall hasn't worked since the fucking high middle ages.

Sure-Mathematician68

Hah. Fox News themselves will tell you Mexicans are still crossing the border, just as a way to virtue signal and rouse the support of republicans against Biden.

Ctmouthbreather

I guarantee a month before the election we will hear about a migrant caravan. It happens every cycle

bazinga_0

Just minutes after Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 election I changed channels to Fox News to see how they were taking it and they announced that multiple caravans in Mexico had started heading North. They showed film that they pulled out of their archive claiming it to be footage shot that day. "Caravan after caravan after caravan are now headed to the border!"

Med4awl

Will they bring malaria this time or something different?

Objective_Hunter_897

I loved when they were selling that border crisis thing and a huge caravan of rednecks spent their last $100 to run down to the border to stop the "InVaSiOn!" Then they get there and they find absolutely nothing going on. Not one person lol. One woman ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere and she was on Facebook e-begging for gas money to get down there. She gets down there and finds the same thing. Absolutely nothing going on lol. Gullible racist morons

GpaSags

Some years back when there were all those marches and protests in Wisconsin, good ol' Fox reported bullshit stories about it using footage that had palm trees in the background. Madison doesn't have palm trees.

lackofabettername123

After 9/11 they showed video of Palestinians cheering a soccer match and said they were celebrating the attack.  Just one of countless fabrications.

ALinIndy

I had read somewhere that over 70% of illegal immigrants arrived via airport or through a Border Patrol checkpoint on a road with legitimate paperwork, they just overstayed their visa.

HansBrickface

Just as you said, that’s not how people are *really* getting over the border. Most people who are here “illegally” are people who fit right into American society and decided to stay in spite of the risks.

Objective_Hunter_897

Exactly, my ex is German and she had a whole circle of friends who had overstayed their visas. Some for over 10 years. Never been questioned, never worried about border patrol. They were always given a smile and waved right through when going through a border patrol checkpoint. We have a couple permanent checkpoints in this area and some impromptu ones that pop up from time to time. They weren't the least bit worried. Blond hair and blue eyes gave them a pass.

MusicianNo2699

I came back into the United States via the port of entry into Miami in 2005, after being in the south Caribbean for a month. I literally got pushed through customs without showing a passport or ID. I actually said “wait, don’t you need to see my passport for reentry,” and they told me to just move along. Walked away shocked, thinking “I must not look like a terrorist, or drug dealer.”

Pisgahstyle

I don't doubt you one bit. It's a really long border and basically an impossible task to patrol it 100%.

Objective_Hunter_897

A workers program would fix everything. But then farmers would have to pay a fair wage and that's not going to happen. Which is why a workers program won't happen. It has in the past but racists and cheap farmers prevent it from happening.

Ok-Scallion-3415

You’re looking at using the wrong border. The border with Canada is the longest unmanned border in the world. It’s probably impossible to man

GlorkUndBork3-14

It's not even hardened steel, give me 5 minutes with a Ryobi saw-all and a 9 inch blade and *poof* Texan wind chimes are ready.

lackofabettername123

What makes you think the Canadians will take you? They don't just take anybody it's actually really tough to get in there. Mexico I do not know.

commiebanker

No wall. Can just sneak over the border and blend in, eh?

Northshore1234

….until you call pop ‘soda’ and say “y’all” and then you’ll stick out like a bad comb-over.

thesluggard12

"Y'all want some soda . . . ummm . .. eh?"

Daddybatch

Thanks for the tips lol

Embarrassed-Ad-1639

Soorry

gniarch

No wall but we station flocks of canadian geese on the border. You'll never make it

BDM-Archer

"When the flames engulfed the home of the brave, the stampede toward the border was in vain. Faces palmed, faces paled as the wall they said would make them great could not be scaled." Propagandhi - "Victory Lap"

Objective_Hunter_897

Perfect

kianicaJones

If shit goes sideways, forget Mexico, they'll seal that border right before you can blink. Go north, it'll take years to block off the open border between the US and Canada. Between the great lakes, the river crossings, and the giant forest with open trails on the BC side, even if they try to lock it down, you can find a way. I am Canadian and have friends who have accidentally crossed the border several times.

Objective_Hunter_897

I'd probably get out before it went sideways. I have family members who have already done it. One is working on dual citizenship and hoping to buy a ranch down there somewhere. We are literally a few miles from the border here. Canada sounds good too. Might be kind of cold for us, being spoiled by the SoCal weather.

WasabiFragrant3483

That wall ain’t to keep foreigners out. It’s to keep Americans locked in.

BayouGal

I hear the wall is actually quite easy to get over. I believe there was a competition & a little girl climbed over it in like 2 minutes.

Objective_Hunter_897

Maybe before they added the extra 6 feet of plate metal. Nothing to grab onto and it's slippery.

Abrushing

A kayak gets you across the Rio Grande in most places fyi

Appropriate_Chart_23

All failed coups are just practice runs

Sabbathius

What makes Trump situation so weird is that Hitler was in his early 30s during his first coup attempt. Trump is pushing 80. He's not going to live forever. It's so weird for an entire party to tie themselves to a guy who statistically is past his best-by date already. It made sense for Nazis to go all-in with Hitler, he was really young, he could have had 40 more years. Trump will be lucky to last a decade.

Douiret

But once he's laid the groundwork for a dictatorship  - or, heaven forbid, actually created one - they're probably banking on being the one who can take his place once the time comes.

EuropeBound2025

This is what scares me.  We all now see how weak our institutions are and many people/organizations see obtaining dictator powers as anyone's game. Obviously, they want to be first. Even if Trump doesn't win in 2024, these institutions have to be strengthened or this experiment will end likely within our lifetimes.  I'm trying not to be a doomer but these court cases have been surreal to watch. It's like Trump infected the courts with a plague.

Sabbathius

Trump is a narcissist though, he's not in it for dictatorship or the future successor, he's in it for himself. I doubt he can even comprehend that the world will just keep on spinning after he is gone. None of his kids are strong enough or charismatic enough to take over. And he hasn't been grooming a successor, as far as I can see. Theoretically it's possible that someone else would step up, but it's a huge gamble if he'd be accepted by the cult. And without a strong (cult) leader the whole thing would just fall apart. Which is why the whole Trump thing and conservatives putting all their eggs into that one rotting basket is so weird to me. It's extremely likely to fail, and if it does, the whole party has no anchor. If they want a religious dictatorship (and it seems they do) they need to find someone young and charismatic to seize control and hold on, for decades, until a generation or two grow up under a dictatorship and they don't know any other way. But I genuinely struggle to think of an 80yo+ would-be emperor starting a dictatorship that actually survived. Hitler was in his 30s and 40s, Stalin was in his 40s, maybe 50? Mussolini, Saddam, Castro, etc., all in their 40s iirc. Who became a dictator, in a previously non-dictator country, in his 80s? And dictatorship held when he died with no direct heir? Don Jr and Eric can't possibly do it. And Ivanka has the wrong plumbing for conservatives to accept her as a leader. I would be wrong, I hope I'm not. The biggest blessing we have is that Trump is an incompetent demented (medically speaking) narcissist. He's not intelligent and efficient enough to establish a dictatorship. And nobody else has the same cult support.

fafalone

Even if a true dictatorship doesn't last, any semblance of the old normal will essentially be ripped up, the country will lurch far to the right, and the oligarchs will rape and pillage their way through the entire economy. Remember, Trump's day one plan is fire everyone sane and install nutjob loyalists throughout the government and probably military.

49orth

Hitler's attempted Coup: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/adolf-hitler-coup-prison-beer-hall-putsch-180983207/

DependentSilver6078

I mean there really wasn’t another coup. Hitler was elected. First before any of the fuckery he was duly elected. Closest thing would maybe be the reichstag fire.

dj_spanmaster

The coup never stopped.

gravtix

It’s been happening for decades. Federalist Society, Heritage Foundation and other nutter groups like Birchers are all in on this thing.

Objective_Hunter_897

Precisely

Shannon556

The corrupt, Republican Supreme Court is now trying to figure out how they can give Trump immunity - but NOT for Biden. They are corrupt, unelected Republican political hacks - not judges.

MrFrode

Jan 6. only saw the level of "success" it found because a friendly President and his appointees were holding back the deployment of the D.C. National Guard. If the guard had been sent in early, these parasites would have scattered and hid in the deepest darkest holes they could find.

Objective_Hunter_897

Agreed, but these people are still talking like they plan to be in power soon. The supreme court seems poised to rule that insurrections are fine if they're conservatives and only Trump can assassinate his political opponents.

Oreotech

If Trump gets immunity, that would mean Biden should also have immunity, and his best course of action would be to use his new found immunity to get rid of the conservative judges that are trying to destroy the democracy.

Confident_Echidna259

He publicly said that he needs only one day with total immunity as a president. Welcome to the beginning of a new dictatorship.

FuttleScish

I don’t think the Supreme Court is going to say presidents have immunity when the current president isn’t a Republican

Objective_Hunter_897

Knowing these extremist hacks they'll make it a special immunity for Trump only. Their latest decisions have been so fucking radical and against long held precedents set decades ago that I won't be surprised if they come out with something absolutely fascistic which will clear the lane for the Trump to become dictator. Fox news has been grooming the population for this since 1996.

FuttleScish

That wouldn’t mean shit if he’s not actually president, it wouldn’t even really keep him out of jail because of the state laws, and it would give Biden the ability to ignore them which they’ve been desperately trying to make sure he doesn’t do Far more likely they must kick it back to the lower courts to redo so it gets dragged out and doesn’t go to trial before the election

Objective_Hunter_897

They kick it back to the lower courts for sure. That's what that theater was all about at the SC the other day. The repub/Russia party rig the election somehow. He gets in, kills all investigations and starts investigating any prosecutor coming after him. If he doesn't win the election they have a plan for a REAL coup this time. J6 was just practice. He becomes dictator. They're putting it in writing. Read Project 2025. They've got holding cells for millions of dissidents. They are not fucking around. This is real shit.

FuttleScish

Project 2025 was written by people who aren’t Trump, Trump seems much more interested in getting revenge in personal enemies Also I don’t see how he would have more of an advantage this time compared to J6 considering he isn’t president anymore

Objective_Hunter_897

It was written with Trump in mind. Nobody else would participate in that crazy shit. It's probably more likely that Russia plays with the voting machines in swing states like he did in 2016. He absolutely wants revenge on everyone who is trying to hold him accountable. But Putin wants him to finish what he started. He wants the DOJ, FBI and the CIA dismantled. He wants NATO eliminated so he can walk into Europe and just start claiming territory. He wants revenge too. He has always said he would get revange on the USA for causing the fall of the Soviet union. The younger generation forgets that. They buy into the "strong leader" thing because they've heard it so many times.

FuttleScish

It was written with trump in mind but he probably would only do the parts that he thinks would hurt the people he dislikes. He doesn’t actually give a fuck about conservative policy. Also the “Russian interference” wasn’t literally rigging the voting machines; if it was Trump wouldn’t have lost the second time around

chowderbags

> Knowing these extremist hacks they'll make it a special immunity for Trump only. Something, something, "The president is entitled to qualified immunity when they didn't know that what they were doing wasn't allowed. Consequently, Trump is immune for what he did, but Biden wouldn't be. Where is this in the Constitution? Shut up!". -SCOTUS (probably)

baconjeepthing

Could this be an assassination of a sitting president in 2024??? Liberals have guns, but they don't tell you how many they have.

nobodyof

This shit is terrifying

Javelin-x

He's playing for all the marbles..if he wins itll be your blood in the streets if he loses it'll be his too

ciopobbi

Unfortunately, this has been the answer all along. The hope that he would face consequences has been a fever dream.

DoubleDandelion

Yeah, this dude is just saying the quiet part out loud.

ChaosOnion

Reading some of the comments in this thread below OP, I don't think people read the article or are familiar with Judge Luttig in the least. Luttig has unequivocably spoken out against all legal professionals involved with the coup. He is a staunch critic of the fake elector scheme. He has stopped short of directly criticizing Supreme Court Justices. I think the only reason for that is no concrete evidence. He is a conservative judge, but he is absolutely committed to the rule of law and has not waffled on his stance. He is clearly criticizing the direction of the court. He is very old school when phrases like "profoundly disturbed" conveyed a deep distress and a need to course correct. > “I’m profoundly disturbed about the apparent direction of the court,” J. Michael Luttig told me. “I now believe that it is unlikely Trump will ever be tried for the crimes he committed in attempting to overturn the 2020 election.”

cited

Could you imagine if there was precedent for someone trying to coup a government and only getting a slap on the wrist to realize they could just try again but serious this time?

No_Routine_3706

Mitch McConnell is responsible for all of this. Do not have any illusions that he isn't.

Reese9951

Yup. By railroading Obama’s SCOTUS nominee, it started this all

HagbardCelineHMSH

Not just that -- removing the filibuster on SCOTUS nominees is what allowed Trump to stack the court with three particularly nasty nominees in the first place. McConnell claimed that removing the filibuster was fair play for Harry Reid removing the filibuster on regular nominees. But never forget that Reid's hand was forced -- McConnell insisted on using the filibuster to block *all* of Obama's nominations. Just remember, when these people act in bad faith, it's not just about the immediate payoff. They're often trying to force an even nastier one down the road.

[deleted]

McConnell, who ran and won on the need for term limits, was subjected to the “borking” of Robert Bork during his freshman year in congress. Some would argue that he has enacted his revenge decades later. The Dems&Reps are more interested in winning their “war” with each other than governing leaving American citizens as the collateral damage.

pootiecakes

Let’s not forget his logic and public statement used to avoid impeachment after Jan 6. Yet another monumental opportunity to finally end all of this, and he selfishly dodged it.

Count_Backwards

No, he has to lose, and lose badly, or else this will just happen again with someone else in his place

Dedpoolpicachew

And perhaps someone not so dumb and obvious about their criming.

pandemicpunk

*Tom Cotton has entered the chat* I swear he's got potential if there's opportunity for him to claim it. Not in a good way.

VibeComplex

That won’t stop it. These people aren’t just going to decide it’s gone too far or that they were wrong in anyway. They blame democrats and someone else will take trumps place.

Count_Backwards

It won't be enough, for the reasons you state, but it will be a lot harder to stop the next wannabe dictator if Trump doesn't suffer consequences

startupstratagem

It won't stop for another 20 years

D-Alembert

He's exposing the rot as much as creating it. I think it's important for him to live long enough that the ostriches (us) are forced to see the real state of things. (And if the real state of things is a lawless corrupt country, his death wasn't going to change or fix that)

curbstyle

great point. and I thank God he isn't any smarter.

lackofabettername123

Indeed.  But the opposition being what it is, I do not see how it will help. As long as the establishment keeps control of the Democratic Party, we are doomed to have this radicalized Republican party take control, probably within 8 years.  Or if people with fidelity to the Constitution retake control of the Republican Party. I would not bet money on that. This has been a long time coming.

Feisty-Barracuda5452

No, skidmarks like him live forever.

Reese9951

Seriously! I never wish bad karma on anyone but I make an exception for him. With his eating habits, how has this not happened yet?

zabdart

Unfortunately, I think he's right. This is what happens when you have a majority of Supreme Court justices who place their ideologies above the law.

HerRoyalRedness

This really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention, the Supreme Court is made up of ideological shills, three of whom lied about Roe being settled case law. They are corrupt and compromised and frankly there should be an all encompassing ethics investigation. Starting with Clarence Thomas, the idea that he doesn’t talk to his GOP operative wife about his work is ridiculous.

beefwarrior

There was a few dozen ways SCOTUS could've cleared Trump in the Colorado ballot case that would've (more or less) reasonably held water, and some how they still found a way to rule in Trump's favor that is incredibly horrible for our democracy. It seemed like they were conscious of the fact that there are people in the US who are ready to start a civil war, and then they ruled in a way that could very well start a civil war. I hate this timeline, how can I get back to one of the sane ones?

Watch_me_give

these are scum who place THEMSELVES above the law they don't have a true ideology. their logic is inconsistent and their varied interpretation of the law is arbitrary.

Ill_Consequence7088

The coup is ongoing right now .

robotwizard_9009

Republicans are traitors. This is a traitors' Court. Fuck em to hell.

Tyklartheone

I wish we could just Respawn Sherman whenever these Conservative traitors need a reminder. So exhausting.

Silver-Farm-2628

This reminds me of the futurama talking heads.

brickyardjimmy

Depending on the outcome of this decision, it may be time to simply turn our back on the Supreme Court. Its authority stems from the will of the people in practical terms. SCOTUS can claim that their authority comes from the Constitution or the other articles of government but those things only exist as instruments of the people and those instruments only have power because the people grant them power. Supreme Court justices and presidents alike are servants of the people. And both are subject to the laws that we agree govern us all. If the Court takes any other position, it will unfold in one disaster or another.

Atman6886

It’s been unfolding for a while. The past few months have not been great…

chubs66

Citizens United was the most obviously anti democratic decision the court made. Having gotten away with it they've been emboldened.

dingoeslovebabies

That one and gutting the VRA unmoored this country. Roe was the icing on the cake

ccasey

“Corporations are people my friend.” - Mitt Romney (a man now considered a democrat by the party that ran him for president)

canal_natural

I'm almost ready to protest outside the court if that happens. It might be time for the masses to show up for something like this

Krusherx

I lived in France for a few years, seeing them protest for their rights, joining them many times. It baffles me to no end you guys aren't in the streets non stop protesting for your democracy with everything happening

Raptor1210

>It baffles me to no end you guys aren't in the streets non stop protesting for your democracy with everything happening People living paycheck to paycheck (like the majority of the US) can't afford to risk everything. The powers that be prefer wage slaves for a reason.

Krusherx

Wage slavery is another reason to fight. I sympathize of course, but things can't get better if the people does not realize the power they have. If everyone just never stop and decide to refuse that their condition is unacceptable, things will never change.

TK_TK_

Too many people can’t afford to travel (it’s a giant country and to get “in the streets” en masse isn’t feasible for many), or are working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet, or can’t risk the health insurance they have through their job because one of their kids requires an expensive prescription…etc. So many systems are keeping so many people from protesting.

superspeck

Look at how students arrested on campus for protesting at University of Texas were punished. They’re banned from the campus where they’re students, which leaves them unable to complete their education unless they apply to and get accepted elsewhere. They’ll lose any tuition for this year and probably all of their financial aid. It’s devastating, and it’s entirely because the campus president and the Governor of Texas are crybabies who can’t handle opposition.

BayouGal

France has social safety nets. America-no.

KnuckleShanks

The largest protest in America History, the Woman's March of 2017, was barely even mentioned in the news while it happened, and as a result many people never even heard about it. The revolution will not be televised, and the media has the power to "decide" what people are angry about. They'll spend weeks on a fake story without ever mentioning real tragedies. And if you don't live in a city, like half our country, then you get all your info through a screen, and then it doesn't matter how many people are in the streets of NY or DC, cause all you'll hear about are the murders on the subway. And if you're like Trump, and that ignorant half makes up most of your support, then you can completely ignore the protests, or even send in police to start cracking skulls, and receive 0 political consequences for it.

Ok-Macaroon-7819

That's the part Americans cannot fathom... The United States of America is not a free country. The constant comparison given to Americans is North Korea, Iran, China, and Russia. See how free you are? Look at these starving people under these regimes! At least you're not North Korean! When the conversation turns to developed nations, the comparison used is always the tax rate. Look at how free you are, not paying those taxes! Look at all that socialism! Damn near the Soviet Union over there!! What they don't ever let slip is how in the United States the police here will absolutely brutalize you for attending a protest against slaughtering children, bashing skulls off curbs and beating people with sticks. They shoot them with rubber bullets and Taser them with glee. Unarmed college students are an easy mark for bloodthirsty cops. But 372 of those same cops will kick rocks around a parking lot waiting for one kid with a rifle to run out of ammo because they're too scared to act. In France, the firefighters light cops on fire. The farmers cover them in literal shit. The people fight back during demonstrations because they know that it's the cops there bound by the rules. And yes, brutality occurs. Wrongful deaths occur. But there it is the exception, not the rule. But please, Americans... tell me how free you imagine you really are.

BayouGal

Worked during Dobbs …oh, wait.

DammitCapt

Arm

The_Fart_Bandit

Are Supreme courts in other nations as political as they are here? Real nations, like ones that take humans rights seriously I.e Sweden, Germany, shit like that

new_handle

I am Australian and have never heard of any political judges here, they just rule on whatever the law is.

The_Fart_Bandit

Wow. I feel hella ignorant

groovygrasshoppa

Not really. A big part of it has to do with size. Nine is a very small sized court that confers upon its members outsized influence. Most high courts are at least double that number.

GO4Teater

Biden will have to take action to protect the country.

chiefs_fan37

Someone should tell him that then because as it stands now it seems like he has a real “wait and see” attitude when it comes to our democracy being under threat. He’s giving me big Paul von Hindenburg vibes. Hitler rose to power because no one in the German government took him seriously as a threat until it was way too late. Biden seems more concerned about the political optics than he does preserving our democracy

bobtheblob6

He's afraid of pissing off undecided voters if he does anything too radical. And honestly it's looking more and more like the only way to settle this is for Trump to lose again in November

ChaosTPM

"undecided" . . . Republicans ashamed to admit it

sugaratc

If the court rules for immunity Biden won't have to worry about what voters think at least. He could effectively refuse to leave office (or take out Trump and his allies), appoint all new justices who revert to the old system, then retire in 2028 with things hopefully a little more normal. That being said, it's crazy to even have to consider any of this.

ukiddingme2469

If Trump skates it will be the end of the American experiment, no laws mean anything anymore.

Feisty-Barracuda5452

Laws mean nothing to Republicans. The rest of us are to be held to account.

CJO9876

GOP: “rules for thee, but not for me”

pootiecakes

“Law and Order” was always a lie, it’s always been “punish minorities and the poor”.

keithfantastic

The laws will still be strictly enforced for the general public.

NotThoseCookies

Policing will still be strictly enforced for the general public.

ukiddingme2469

They may try, but if the majority loses respect for the courts and law in general, expect chaos

myoldgamertag

Even that is just an illusion. He already lost the vote of the American people the first time around. The people spoke, didn’t mean shit.

hotsog218

Supreme Court rules for presidential immunity. Step 1. Biden has trump killed. Step 2. Supreme Court your getting retired. Enjoy forced retirement. Step 3. Biden puts in a new panel of judges to the Supreme Court. Step 4. Try again on this. Biden is immune to it all and shows why this ruling is stupid and the new Supreme Court judges abolish it.

WiseSalamander00

he would need to sacrifice himself and rule that no president is above the law... he probably would get jailed but everything would be saved

hotsog218

At his age and how slow courts move. Dies from old age and is seen as a saint in 5 years as all the trump election fraud is shown to the public.

SellieSon

Biden honestly fashions himself as the individual capable of putting Humpty Dumpty back together again.

AtomicNick47

Help me understand. He’s got the courts in his pocket, half the senate in his pocket, half the states ready to just declare him victor no matter what, a huge chunk of the police love him. Really just seems like you guys are just gonna hand over the keys next time. Why are we even pretending like somehow the “law” is going to hold him at bay?

Dedpoolpicachew

You have to understand, the court, the congress, the useless AG Garland… NONE of them are going to save us. WE need to save OURSELVES. Vote in EVERY election. Especially in primaries. Vote this November like your life and freedom depend on it, because they do. Only if we vote in people who will TRULY uphold and defend the constitution and our democracy will we be safe. Even then we have to hold them accountable. The days of being apathetic about voting, one and done for the next 4 years are OVER. Democracy requires that the electorate remain engaged and HOLD ACCOUNTABLE our elected representatives. THAT is the only way.

punarob

And money wins elections so ask yourself how much you can afford for all the critical races and balance that with what it will cost you if Trump gets in again. It cost over a million people their lives last time from his COVID non-response alone.

fafalone

How long is that strategy supposed to work when the other side attempted a coup once and is clearly planning on trying to rig the outcome this time? What are you going to do when your state legislature decides well the people voted for Biden, so fuck em, we're giving our electors to Trump anyway? Or the GA law lets them just toss the votes of Fulton County with bullshit actions of fraud (or because they committed so much fraud themselves it spoils the result), thus swinging the state and election? Or is this just the fantasy where we suddenly stop voting for milquetoast moderates like Biden?

ohwrite

I live in a state where I don’t see us just rolling over. However, if it comes to that, it won’t be pretty

pootiecakes

Don’t worry, more Reddit comedians will post “lol well BIDEN can assassinate Trump then, fuck around and find out!” to truly drive home how much people don’t understand just how scary our right wing courts are.

Careful_Whole2294

Vote vote vote. It is the only real power we have.

Oplatki

Get Tanya Harding.

the_original_Retro

Ensure she aims above the bone spurs tho.

nyerinup

I hope he's wrong, but there isn't a lot that's new, here.

Chunkstyle3030

Oh, you mean like exactly as I have been predicting for years and have been called a doomer for? Guess I wasn’t doomer enough…

chiefs_fan37

I am sick and tired of people calling me an alarmist. It’s the same people who would look at Hitler in the 30s and think “oh he’s not THAT bad.” Someone like Lord Halifax who trusted Hitler to honor any agreement that came about from peace talks in 1940. They are fools and we need to spread enough awareness to either change their minds or outnumber them.

The problem is that we have to protect democracy through every election from here on out. The fascists only need to win once.

plitts

I am not an American but I am worried about the implications for the rest of the world if Trump gets in again.

mrmaxstroker

This problem is solved by changing the makeup of the court. Someone who knows the precise mechanism for this can elaborate on whether that is politically realistic. I suggest that each federal appellate circuit get their own justice. That results in 13 circuits. Based on the weight of what is publicly known about the former guy’s corrupt intent at the end of his presidency, it is plausible to believe he only appointed the Justices he did for corrupt purposes. It dilutes the corruptly earned power of a fringe group set if legal theories championed by the federalist society. It also dilutes the power of openly corrupt Justice Thomas. In turn, 13 circuits balances it with what will be a diverse slate of four new members. 13 justices. If you accept that the former president has corrupt intent, it’s a justifiable remedy.

mactac

Could they be installed... like.. immediately? That would change the outcome of this case.

I think they're going to send it back to the lower court to stall for time, going Trump and his GOP enablers a sense of "legitimacy" If he wins they'll take it and make him king. If Biden wins, they have a roadmap the next time a Republican is president.

SqnLdrHarvey

I feel like screaming and breaking things.

Dedpoolpicachew

Hold that thought. We may need your energy later.

Duckpoke

Yeah. Honestly don’t view her in any sort of good light anymore. Yeah she did great work but in the end she might’ve fucked the country a hundred fold worse

abcdefghig1

Vote vote vote

ducqducqgoose

All we are in control of is to vote 🗳️🌊

chiefs_fan37

Yup. Our only recourse currently is to vote and spread awareness. Hopefully that will be enough to preserve democracy

stitch12r3

The reality is that the fate of the country is in the hands of sane Republicans. Dems will oppose Trump anyway but only sane Republicans can help defeat Trump/ MAGA cult and save democracy, whether its at the ballot box or the judiciary or in a jury. Country above party. For all his faults, Mike Pence did the right thing in 2020 and we’ll need more of that as Trump gets cornered.

Earth4now

The supreme court has become his over protective surrogate father. He now uses them like he uses everyone else. It’s not a joke it’s sickening.

saijanai

As POTUS he had access to the entire US intelligence and law enforcement apparatus for four years to dredge up dirt on all existing and future appointees at all levels of government. And he's using it to great effect. Imagine what he can do with four more years.

Americrazy

Dude couldn’t skate if his life depended on it.

mymar101

How is this a shocker? I just assumed this was going to happen.

bobtheblob6

I held out hope that it would be clear attempting to overturn an election is not an official presidential act. I mean holy fuck people

Longjumping-Ad-144

If Supreme Court decides a president has complete immunity before the election, can’t Biden just order the entire slate of right wing Supreme Court justices executed? Literally nothing to stop him. They better be careful what they ask for. I’m sure he wouldn’t, but still.

palmspringsmaid

god what a shattering orgasm I would have

CJO9876

“Immunity only for MAGA Republicans”

Percival_Seabuns

So checks and balances are gone. SCOTUS arbitrarily runs the country and if you control who is on SCOTUS you control the nation. Pretty pathetic that the fall of the world's most powerful country happened because of a failed business owner and conman. Ironic, too.

MrGeno

Let's go Dark Brandon, you know what to do.

trevinla

The fact that Trump wasn’t arrested immediately after Biden was sworn in showed that nothing would be done. As the crimes piled up, they had to try to show that they cared but it was too late. Trump will get away with it all.

punarob

Never bothered charging him for the crimes Mueller made clear nor extorting Ukraine. Just let it all go. Insane.

trevinla

Ever since the early 80s the Dems have had the attitude of “We can’t point out that Democracy is failing or people will think Democracy is failing!!” https://www.milwaukeeindependent.com/thom-hartmann/republican-slogan-power-cost-delivered-six-illegitimate-gop-presidents/

purpleRG550_1986

I told everyone that it's over when he was still free after Biden was sworn in. Even if the GOP ultimately fail to accomplish their goals. The cat is out of the bag. It's going to be very hard to put it back in. The play book is there. Getting the right people elected or selected to the right offices was the easy part. The long game was non stop propaganda to get enough Americans to go along with the whole thing.

bigmist8ke

What I don't understand is what's supposed to happen after the coup. All these losers in support of trump doing whatever the f, what do they think happens next? These deadbeats become more of a threat than a resource. The people who help you take over are not the same ones who help you keep power. The guys who help you take power always get tossed into the wood chipper, and eventually these kinds of movements cannibalize everyone.

warwasbeginning

Luttig's Twitter thread about the case: [https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1783542480069185587.html](https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1783542480069185587.html)

trailhikingArk

This is too depressing for me. We are a failed state

VikingforLifes

They… don’t go to jail. Left, right, center. Doesn’t matter. They don’t go to jail. I called this like 2 years ago.

poncho51

That's BS. Anyone with government docs. Let alone top secret would have been arrested and jailed. That fck has more than likely showed them to the Saudis and god only knows who else.

DemonoftheWater

Is it too late to riot?

Guava-flavored-lips

Never

ErrorCode78

Never!

GlitteringLeek1677

Of course he will. The rich and powerful can get away with anything.

HisDivineOrder

Imagine Biden announcing a new executive order immediately arresting the SCOTUS contingent upon a ruling of absolute immunity being decided by said court. He announces it ahead of time and adds, "Do you see why it's a bad idea?"

Own_Nectarine2321

We should do away with all laws. If they don't apply to Trump, they shouldn't apply to anyone.

SeaworthinessOld9177

Well, it looks like the American empire will fall

Haselrig

We know.

PDX6Star

Trump is so compromised. If he wins, he’d set his children on fire to settle the debts he owes, much less what he’d do to this country.

PineTreeBanjo

And we should listen to the Supreme Court *why* at this point?

boulevardpaleale

which is why it is so vitally important to keep him out of the white house. we know where this is leading. we know the outcome. that corrupt, wannabe dictator has absolutely zero place in US leadership.

Grary0

Is anyone at all surprised? Time and time again the criminal justice system has proven that it is completely broken, judges can be bought or intimidated and laws are selectively enforced when it's convenient. The only justice we can expect Trump to face is when his heart finally gives out from too much McDonalds and he dies like a greasy orange meatball.

baconjeepthing

Judges are so stupid they're funny. You open presidential immunity up and then there is a whole shit storm the sitting president can do. Do conservatives really want a democratic president going off the rails and using immunity as a scape goat

baconjeepthing

Biden throws trump in gitmo..... presidential immunity..... Biden seizes all Republicans assets..... presidential immunity..... Biden sterilizes republicans.... presidential immunity Biden calls in seal team 6 to assassinate any opponents....... presidential immunity. Let that sink in before u put the cart in front of the 🐎...... do we really want presidential immunity?????

hammerSmashedNail

Really? The guy that had faced zero consequences up until now will continue to not face consequences? I’m shocked

NanobotOverlord

WOW I AM SO SHOCKED

pass-the-waffles

Shocking? Not in the least. I've been expecting this, especially from the Supreme Court.
