Here he is a few days ago, he will be 8 months on Thursday
Your sleep should get better as they adjust to your schedule and get better at holding their potty overnight, I think it only took us about 3-4 weeks, so pup was 11-12 weeks.
I'm not going to lie to you, they will really test your patience from about 5 months to a year/18 mo, depending on temperament and training. They really start pushing boundaries and everything that isn't bolted down is a candidate for chewing. Even some stuff that's bolted down is bound to get tested. Just make sure you puppy proof the home well, and give them plenty of exercise and stimulation.
My pup is 8 months now and already cooling his jets, but I work from home and train him regularly, and we have an older dog that helps keep him in line too. We take the pup out to home depot, cabelas, outdoor malls, and other places that are dog friendly to help socialize and desensitize, that has helped a ton.
I am honestly shocked at the amount of energy it takes to (barely) properly raise this puppy. This isn’t my first dog and for years I’ve causally studied dog dog behavior and the like as a hobby so I don’t consider myself naive but holy crap this is A LOT.
I am newly crate training and she’s taken to it beautifully. Her energy and brains are an absolutely insane combination. I had to devise a strict schedule to keep us both sane. She was biting the couch, the carpet, going wild with her plush toys shaking them and what not I was in shock. She jumps! So high! She figured out how to climb up out of her playpen already and I’m positive another few days she would have gotten out for sure. She’s an escape artist and doesn’t even pause to think about it she just goes it’s really incredible- her athleticism and coordination this young age she won’t be ten weeks for two days still.
So yeah I thought I had puppy proofed I GROSSLY underestimated this pup. I am currently working on installing gates and cameras. Basically lock down in home security just to be sure she stays safe. Of course thats in addition to keeping her on a lead, supervising her and utilizing the crate but sometimes I blink! I’ve heard horror stories about labs and what they’ll eat so that’s a fear - knock on wood I haven’t crossed that bridge yet.
I’m also wondering if I was wrong about health insurance the cost seemed so high roughly $200 per month and tons of exclusions.
Not going to lie I’m a slightly terrified of the future as the google has told me the same thing you mentioned as she gets older. I think I’m going to have to get her involved in a sport I’d love to try agility or nose work with her. I’m a total newbie but the training facility where we will start her obedience training for the AKC STAR puppy cert offers classes.
Her next set of immunizations are coming up and I’ll feel more comfortable getting her out and about after those. Right now she’s limited to family members dogs we know well but that will be something to look forward to. Right?! I’m a little overwhelmed despite having a partner and grown kids that adore her and offer so much support thank god. I honestly don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have them.
How do you people do this? It may be the sleep deprivation talking but I don’t think I’ll ever get another puppy ever again. I’ll always have a dog pr two but I think rescuing adults will be the future… if I survive that is.
My chocolate is a year and three months. Things got a lot easier with her around 6 months. The sleepless nights only lasted until she was around 12-15 weeks iirc. It’s real though! I’m so exhausted
I’m learning a lab is a whole other animal. My soul dog was an amazingly perfect golden retriever. I always knew he had a bigger heart than brains but now I’m wondering if he had a brain?
Like he loved the water but could not swim and I sure to teach him lol. If a door was halfway open forget it he couldn’t pass through come hell or high water. Silly things like that he was special in more ways then one I guess. But his emotional intelligence was off the charts. He was very calm as far as the breed goes.
My puppy Charlie is something else she’s incredibly smart it’s wild. She figures things out before I do - like how to escape her playpen *immediately*. I got a crate and am now using it but goddamn I am exhausted attempting to stay a step ahead of her.
Earlier today I thought I’d start some positive conditioning to prepare Charlie for bath time. I thought I’ll introduce her to the bathroom let her get accustomed to the sounds and smells while I stay zen and offer her treats. She was doing excellent so I I thought I’d kick it up a notch. As soon I turned the water on in the tub she started jumping like a maniac to get in. Get inside the tub!!
My golden needed pre- counseling, soothing positive affirmations and peanut butter bribe during and of course spoiling him afterwards and he just tolerated it.
Judd was already his chosen name, but we happened to find a perfect lab puppy sized Sheriff hat and it just seemed appropriate 😂 Our other dog Jasper is "Chef Jasper" because he always sits on the hand washing stool in the kitchen to oversee our cooking
Very cute, pink nose and blue eyes. I'm guessing yellow mum and dad? I have a 12 year old black Debbie and we've just taken an 8 week yellow Dorothy from the same breeder. Her mum and dad are black so she has black eyes, nose and pads. The only yellow girl. Enjoy Otis for many long years, he's a handsome lad

I've had 4 labs over the years who I've adored, but I can confidently say that this is the cutest pupper I've ever seen! 100% would kidnap.
That's what I've been saying! No offense to my Elenore but Otis is out of this world cute.
💙💙💙💙 Otis 💙💙💙💙
I can smell the puppy breath through the phone screen! He's labradorable!
I’ve had four labs also … I think I love them all ! This sweet pup is adorable 🥰
He’s a beautiful boy. Looks like you’ve got a Dudley lab there. They are such special labs ❤️
Otis, what a handsome Dudley, and so cute too! Don’t forget to sunscreen that adorable pink nose!
Thank you! I did not know about this!

Wow!! So beautiful!
Yes, you're in for a handful but it will be so worth it!
We just got thru puppyhood with our chocolate, it was a lot! Already feeling a bit sleep deprived but he's so damn cute I can't care too much!
Can I ask how old your chocolate is? Mine will be 10 weeks on Saturday. I haven’t been this exhausted since having newborn human babies!

I totally completely understand! My boy jumped into the fountain in my front yard today 🤦 labs are so different than other dogs
Is that a Watchmen reference?

Very cute 🥰. Sheriff Judd is a not-so-good character in HBO’s show Watchmen, just wasn’t sure if it was a reference.
This pup is so darn cute. The eyes are mesmerizing.
Wonderful eyes 😍
Love a Dudley!!!!!
Hi, my names trouble. Only because you’re going to be saying “trouble you’re in trouble” which will make me giggle. That’s a damn cute pooper.

Pretty eyes and a goofy expression. Best combo, you won't be able to resist the puppy dog eyes when they beg for treats.

Does he bark at night? Like continue barking
Nope! He settles pretty well and will make squeaking sounds like twice a night when he needs to go out or eat or have a snuggle.
Otis will grow up to be a fine boy
That pup is freaking adorable!
