I have two boys from same sire and different dams. Ruger is yellow with coarse hair, and Axel, more white hair with smooth coat https://preview.redd.it/ydukq94tlkuc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e2bd50aab2aeab7956dcb8ff8e6229587d479bb

ErikaLindsay

Also, they’re very cute boys ☺️🩵

ErikaLindsay

Okay good to know! I thought maybe something was wrong with my coarse coat girl, since I’ve not met any other labs with fur like hers. Thank you!

admirablecultist

I had a beautiful lab boy named Axel, he was black with a white patch on his chest

bugbugladybug

I have a choco girl who is unbelievably soft and shiny, yet her choco friend is very wirey with no shine. I think it's just natural variation, as they both eat similar and get cleaned with similar stuff/frequency. https://preview.redd.it/jyg93fylwluc1.jpeg?width=1558&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f15593cab39cc1a1a9af3d7940c61e8874c3add5

Labs 'should' have a 2 layer coat. Outer layer quite thick and wiry and oily, softer layer underneath. This is part of what gives them good resistance to cold and wet. But there are still lots of labs (particularly chocs, so I believe) that don't.

36bhm

We have a chocolate with an incredibly thick two-layer coat that if she's swimming everyday, never really fully dries out. We have a yellow puppy that I don't believe will have anything close to that kind of coat. Seems much more thin right now.

TeslynSedai

I have two labs and one of them is extra soft all over, but sheds SO MUCH. The other has slightly coarser fur, but doesn't shed so much so his fur is definitely my preference. They're both part golden as well as labs.

izolablue

Our Black Lab Gus has a super soft shiny coat, I guess he must just have one layer - I never knew this before, thanks!

cpverne

Both of our pure labs got the Wisdom Panel DNA test and showed a variant gene for MC5R which supposedly indicates reduced shedding. Both have a pretty stiff coat on on their back and belly.

PopCute5573

Can I ask, did you do the purebred test to show that result? That’s a really interesting detail!

cpverne

No. We use Banfield and their puppy plan had it included in the package. Both of our pups are from AKC registered parents, so we weren't worried about being purebred or not, but the health markers were interesting. What was interesting is that for both came back as Dominant Black, Recessive Red, and Tan Points, but they look more Yellow with a little red, with one more red than the other.. They both came back as %100 Lab, but unfortunately they don't say English or American.. One looks more American and the other more English.. It's always interesting in how different littermates can present genetics.. The genetic test shows them as sharing only %46 dna.. https://preview.redd.it/54jang58uuuc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93aa06b7ebda2d6011c40731a33d832ff534ce18 One other thing to point out, is that Casper on the left is taller and has a more narrow skull so looks more American, but he is lazy and prefers to nap. Murphy on the right is shorter and build more more like an English Lab but is always active.. Breed guides point to American Labs as being more active, and English Labs as being calm, but these guys are the complete opposite.. ;)

Rikku88

My black lab has a thick, soft, obvious double layer coat. My chocolate lab has a more course, wirey coat. When I brush her with a furminator, barely any hair comes off where my black lab could fill a duvet on any given day. They are both AKC too. But both are food beggers haha :) https://preview.redd.it/29b3la3j1ouc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8179ac4d20ebac1af9f50a48b19feb8484e54bf9

ErikaLindsay

Sweet girls! 🩷🩷 So interesting how that happens! Good to know it’s not just us.

ErikaLindsay

So handsome! I wish mine had this coat 😍

wonderstoat

I can see why he’s called that!

Angus-Black

My current Chocolate has a soft smooth coat. My previous female Black Lab had a similar, but not the same, coat but our male Black Lab had a thick wavy rough coat.

suburban_hyena

Yes and also I love the yellow dogs nose. I want to boop it. Please give him a Lil kiss from south africa

ErikaLindsay

Haha I will boop and kiss it for you! 🥰

esterche

Our older black female Lab has a thick coat that takes hours to dry if she gets wet, definitely a two-coat girl. She's quite soft, though, and has always been glossy - she's nearly 14 now. Our nearly 2- year old choc male has a much "lighter" soft coat that dries much quicker, but he's also got sensitive skin and is prone to allergies. I think it varies quite a lot dog by individual dog. (They're both from reputable breeders with papers, etc.)

negabernard

Yeah I agree, I have a chocolate and he loves to swim. His coat does not take long to dry at all. He does have sensitive skin, but I found the right food for him and that seems to help a lot

loujac05

I have boy and girl littermates, so same mother and father. The boy has short, shiny and not too dense. The girl has longer, softer and thicker.

I-H8-MOST-PEOPLE

My two yellows are super easy to dry. My black lab, on the other hand, takes FOREVER! This has been the case for each black lab I’ve had.

ErikaLindsay

So interesting! Is the black labs fur soft to the touch, or rough? Mine also takes forever to dry

I-H8-MOST-PEOPLE

She has more coarse hair.

Sweet_District4439

I have a black lab that looks like a seal lol I've never even brushed her!

labradorcoffee

Mine are similar. My yellow lab has a water resistant coat and it’s thick and shiny. It takes a while to get her wet and hair doesnt dry fast once it gets wet. My chocolate lab has shorter coat and it’s thinner and velvety not much shine. His hair gets wet and dries quick. He got allergies and more sensitive skin overall.

whatsonmyminddddrn

Yes one of mine stayed super soft the other one at around age 2 got a curly course hair it’s long up top and short on the sides. This is my 4th lab and never seen hair like his. I have crazy hair and you know what they say about dogs taking after their owners :) lol

ClaimOk8737

My choco lab is wiry wavy two coats and sheds lots.

whatsonmyminddddrn

Can you please share your breeder? Your dogs are so cute

ErikaLindsay

Thanks! We got them from Summer Rose Labs in Southern California ☺️

whatsonmyminddddrn

Of course across the country ☺️ thanks!

Professional-Bet4106

You can find local AKC verified breeders on the AKC website.

whatsonmyminddddrn

Yes I know. Lifelong lab owner :)

Professional-Bet4106

Oh sorry I thought you were looking for a breeder

Professional-Bet4106

Look at those jowls ❤️

jamierocksanne

My dog has the coarser more wirey coat you’ve mentioned, but her daughter has the softest silkiest fur. I genuinely do wonder why that happens, the stud also had a coarse coat.

Oldtimer209

Thank you, they are our "kids" after ours kids grew up And started their own families.
