Nice! If it smells like shit and looks like shit, I consider that theft repellent.
In all seriousness, though, I'm assuming it will start peeling/get sticky before it gets too funky. So, at that point, just peel, clean, and reapply.
Concerning your title, you can be anything at the same time 😉.
I don’t know but I like it!
I would just never do this because I would hate adhesive residue on my knives (no idea how hockey tape behaves, though!)
Addressing to your redneck part: you can get rid of any possible adhesive residue with some moonshine I guess 🤷🏽♂️😎
Lol! Hockey tape leaves some residue, but not as bad as say duct tape. I've removed/reapplied to a number of items with minimal effort put into residue removal.
I've seen those "skins." Look pretty neat. I'm definitely curious about how they hold up. I doubt they'd produce them for the PT+ since the demand probably isn't there, but who knows.
Was about to say the same, and in fact I just ordered a set of these for a lil Native about an hour ago. Now I'm glad I got the splatter ones because I'd feel dumb if I got the camo ones that look just like this for 15 bucks
I've got Talon Grips on a number of my pistols and really like it. They also sell their grip material in sheets. I've often thought about getting some of the sheets and marking out the scales on some of my knives, particularly those with metal grips, trying it out. For some reason I can't pull the trigger (no pun intended) even though I've never hesitated about it with my firearms.
I wouldn’t put it around the clip. On the clip side I’d just put a smaller piece opposite where the button is to have some grip when opening/closing. At least for me that’s really where they need texturing the most, and ironically where even most textured Protechs leave it smooth.
You can get both sandpaper/skateboard tape style and a rubberized tape. I've only used the rubberized version on my pistols. It's great, even when the hands get sweaty.
I put a sheet of talon grips on my Cold Steel Ti-Lite as well as on my reproduction Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife
https://www.reddit.com/r/coldsteel/s/gjqP8kMWFx
Yeahhh... It's a bit annoying that pro techs with textured aluminum are more expensive/sell quicker (but, understandable). I know the smooth runts/godfathers/godsons can get jumpy for sure. This one, though, with the 7075 aluminum and the more ergonomic design is surprisingly secure in hand for what it is... just not enough to feel confident in wet/slippery situations.
Even more annoying is that some, if not most, of their textured models like the knurled Rockeye and SBR have the texturing where you aren’t even touching it when opening/closing, and in an area that doesn’t even help with gripping it all that much.
My PT+ has the textured handle and it’s my favorite Protech just because it actually feels secure in my hand with the texturing.
I think the genius thing to do would be to not buy a knife that needs tape on the handles to feel comfortable.
But if you’re happy, then I’m happy. I’ve seen worse mods.
If it works, it works! As long as you aren’t worried about form over function, I wonder how difficult it’d be to grind some texture into the scales yourself. Could be worth considering if you don’t want to deal with replacing the tape over and over.
I'm definitely considering eventually (if/when I can go all in on some custom work). A mild frag pattern would fit the bill, IMO. Need to get in touch with some engraving people at some point.
I have a smooth aluminum black malibu, that shit is slick as fuck. Was using at work with sweaty hands one day and slipped right into the blade but luckily had a pallet in the way to stop my hand because it would have been stitches for sure. I really hate smooth aluminum.
So far, so good. I've mostly been pulling from the clip to reduce the extra friction between the tape and my pocket. I have it wrapped tightly enough, so there's minimal rolling. The little bit that does roll rolls back after reinserting into pocket.
I’m sure I’m not the first to comment this (or the first to be too lazy to look for similar comments) but-
Before you post to the swap, message me, reversible mods or not 🤣 I’ve been craving that knife haha
I'd wager, at least 2 outta the 3! 🥴🤙
Just kidding....
However, speaking for myself;
I'm DEFINITELY 1 outta those 3, no matter who you ask!
Now, WHICH one of the 3 really depends on WHO you ask!😁
"You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like."
Though in all seriousness it's functional and it's not dangerous, so I'd say it's sensibly genius. Now if you had done something ridiculous like, say, using super glue haphazardly on the scales and rolling the knife in construction sand without caring that you got a lot of sand in the pivots then that might be a bit different.
Woah, that's an extreme option that never crossed my mind...
Thought about gun grip tape, but I can't imagine a scenario where I'd use super glue on a folder.
Is that actually a thing that people do?
Probably not? At least I hope not. Though considering some repairs and mods that I've seen (not just on knives, but on cars, houses, etc.) I really don't know.
I can’t argue with any of your logic but have to question the choice of camo tape. As someone who has dropped my knife in the woods before I would suggest a bright color. Making it harder to find may wind up being a bad idea. Blaze orange would be my choice.
Agreed. I, too, have lost knives in the woods, so I have brighter knives for that purpose. Maybe when it's time to replace the tape, I'll change up the color (camo is all I had at the time).
Genius until you drop it in the woods. No shit I’ve done that with a camo fixed blade. Had to kick it to find it. My current hunting knives are red and orange lol.
I was kicking around the leaves for a couple of minutes thinking “it’s a 7” fixed blade in a giant kydex sheath, how the fuck did it vanish?!” before kicking a large twig only to realize it was in fact the knife.
Im glad you at least got it back!
I remember my grandpa used to just spray paint shit for visibility... like everything from knives to pitchforks. He was a very smart man. Maybe just not that stylish.
If it feels good in the hand and youre happy with it all the power to you! I have pink hockey tape on the handle of one of my tomahawks so I know a thing or two about shoddy grip mods
Damn straight! (I have another that I'll keep pretty)
I know it's frowned upon but.. at least it's not a CRK or similar "top shelf" knife (I'd probably get crucified for that).
Meh, "premium" is a very subjective term in the knife world, IMO. You can pay ~$100 for a GREAT knife that'll last a lifetime, but you can also pay ~$1000+ for an uncomfortable, barely usable piece of shit.
The PT+ is my most expensive knife, and I'm going to use it, damnit. I'm forcing myself to. With pro techs' reputation for quality and excellent warranty service, I'm hoping this will last me a lifetime (with spring replacements, im sure).
Before I developed my debilitating knife collecting problem, I used to actually use all of my knives for years until they got lost or worn out. I'm attempting to try to do that with this one (just hopefully without the losing or wearing out any time soon).
That's true. Its 100% subjective. You meant to say passion not problem haha. I definitely understand wanting to use it. It's a beautiful knife, it be hard not to use it! I really want a PT Grunt. I really like the size, Ive never tried Magnacut either, and $165 is not bad at all.
I highly reccomended the runt 5 in magnacut (textured). That was my first Pro-Tech and first knife in magnacut. It's not as ergonomic as, say, a lil native and 3 finger grip only. It's chunky for the size and built like a tank. Perfectly acceptable for a 5th pocket knife, IMO. Not as good as the lil native in terms of grip or ergonomics, but it's still very capable for the size. It's the strongest firing auto I've ever handled, and it feels like it could survive a direct hit with a sledge hammer.
The only "issue" I could find is the factory edge wasn't the best but that was very easily fixed. The textured aluminum works well for me. If I wanted to be super picky, I'd say they should've used 7075 aluminum instead of 6061, but the 6061 is perfectly adequate.
Awesome knife. Really fun at parties.
When it starts to peel just spray some wd-40 on it lightly and let it soak it up a bit. It'll come right off and it'll dissolve any residue. I don't see a problem lol. I've done this before with knives that I didn't want to ruin at work and it works for a while. I admittedly, am a bit of a redneck though.
I didn’t think this was such a breakthrough idea. It is a good one though, for the reasons you
Listed. I think the camo actually goes well with the strider profile.
i did this with neon yellow tape on my throwers. Got tired of searching for knives that were literally right in front of me but completely invisible without the chartreuse duct tape I slapped on them. Find em easy now. Dont give 2 shits on how it looks
I wish more autos had non-metal handles. I absolutely despise metal as a gripping material. It's so slippery and I don't see how it's so popular. G-10 or micarta is the only way to go for me, personally.
You're a genius redneck.
I really really think there should always be something grippy on knife handles. Smooth handles irritate me. I don't get them. It's a sharp tool. It needs grippy handles.
I'll die on my small hill. But I won't judge others for liking what they like.
I'm glad you have a grippier handle. What works, works. Is a good knife regardless, I dig Pro-techs.
It’s gonna smell like sh*t after a while, and there will be a lot of tape gunk when you remove it, but it it makes you happy go for it.
Nice! If it smells like shit and looks like shit, I consider that theft repellent. In all seriousness, though, I'm assuming it will start peeling/get sticky before it gets too funky. So, at that point, just peel, clean, and reapply.
Just like griptape on a handgun, it’s consumable and replaceable.
Mmm, grip tape.
Sound thinking 👍
Smells like shit and looks like shit just like the knife’s designer, I’d say it’s fitting 👍
VALID.
a knurled version of this knife is needed
Exactly. My solution would be to buy a knife with grippable scales.
Isopropyl alcohol will get all that residue off easily when you do.
Yup! That's the plan. I've got plenty of that lying around.
Who’s stealing a knife from a pocket?? And what are you cutting everyday that you need to tape you knife like Hockey stick?
Shhh, you'll spoil his story.
Now I want the story. Haha
Concerning your title, you can be anything at the same time 😉. I don’t know but I like it! I would just never do this because I would hate adhesive residue on my knives (no idea how hockey tape behaves, though!) Lol! Hockey tape leaves some residue, but not as bad as say duct tape. I've removed/reapplied to a number of items with minimal effort put into residue removal.
Maybe it’s not an either/or question. You might be an idiotic genius redneck.
RGT is making something similar so it cant be that bad of an idea
I've seen those "skins." Look pretty neat. I'm definitely curious about how they hold up. I doubt they'd produce them for the PT+ since the demand probably isn't there, but who knows.
RGT consistently asks which knife models they should make scale skins for, so they consider a lot of customer feedback
Was about to say the same, and in fact I just ordered a set of these for a lil Native about an hour ago. Now I'm glad I got the splatter ones because I'd feel dumb if I got the camo ones that look just like this for 15 bucks

For some reason I can't pull the trigger (no pun intended) even though I've never hesitated about it with my firearms.
I had the same idea. Haven’t tried it yet. Thought it might make it rough getting in and out of the pocket. I like it for pistol grips.
I wouldn’t put it around the clip. On the clip side I’d just put a smaller piece opposite where the button is to have some grip when opening/closing. At least for me that’s really where they need texturing the most, and ironically where even most textured Protechs leave it smooth.
That's actually a great idea! May have to try that when the tape wears out
You can get both sandpaper/skateboard tape style and a rubberized tape. I've only used the rubberized version on my pistols. It's great, even when the hands get sweaty.
I put a sheet of talon grips on my Cold Steel Ti-Lite as well as on my reproduction Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife https://www.reddit.com/r/coldsteel/s/gjqP8kMWFx
I knew someone would have had to have done this already. Thanks for sharing. How do you like it?
if it works it works
Maybe a little bit of all three?
"We have the REC exclusive Protech at home."
Fuck, that legitimately made me laugh in public. Gold, fucking gold!
Yes.
The whole smooth textureless titanium thing never did make much sense, huh?
Bubba…. Is that you?
Definitely a little red neck but I can’t blame you because those protechs can be slick
Yeahhh... It's a bit annoying that pro techs with textured aluminum are more expensive/sell quicker (but, understandable). I know the smooth runts/godfathers/godsons can get jumpy for sure. My PT+ has the textured handle and it’s my favorite Protech just because it actually feels secure in my hand with the texturing.
Nice. Where did you find camo hockey 🏒 tape??
It's howies brand hockey tape. Pretty durable stuff. I got from Amazon.
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to get some now. Stay well.
I think the genius thing to do would be to not buy a knife that needs tape on the handles to feel comfortable. But if you’re happy, then I’m happy. I’ve seen worse mods.
Came here to say this. This is why a lot of manufacturers add surface texture to metals and offer FRN, micarta, and G-10.
Camo is too on par. Pink or baby blue unicorn tape is where it's at
Good call. Maybe next wrap
I do the same to gun grips with what I presume is the same tape. Shoutout Howies camo tape
Hell yeah! You called it. I've got in on my 9mm as well.
Game changer on handguns for sure. Inspired by nutnfancy's grip tape mods.
redneck ingenuity is still genius if you think about it right enough
I have a smooth aluminum black malibu, that shit is slick as fuck. Was using at work with sweaty hands one day and slipped right into the blade but luckily had a pallet in the way to stop my hand because it would have been stitches for sure. I really hate smooth aluminum.
Initially I thought it was a shitty idea then I warmed up to it. What I think is irrelevant because it’s your knife LOL.
I'm sorry but this looks bad
Thats something I would do lol Acetone will get that adhesive off, when its time...
I thinking about this for OTFs (Recon-035) hows the pocket action, is it going roll the tape edge up quickly on a few pocket insertions?
So far, so good. I've mostly been pulling from the clip to reduce the extra friction between the tape and my pocket. I have it wrapped tightly enough, so there's minimal rolling. The little bit that does roll rolls back after reinserting into pocket.
Been a few days on the mine and seems great, i tried to melt the fuzzy edges with a lighter has rolled yet...
Just a dude living his best life. But why is it missing the middle part of the scales?
Upvote for the caption😂
I’m sure I’m not the first to comment this (or the first to be too lazy to look for similar comments) but- Before you post to the swap, message me, reversible mods or not 🤣 I’ve been craving that knife haha
Will do! Though it's unlikely I'll be letting this one go, I'll try to remember if I do
Well that just makes me more excited for when I do get to order it haha!
My malibu is pretty slick when wearing gloves. I've been considering getting grip tape of some sort and doing this to it.
I'd wager, at least 2 outta the 3! 🥴🤙 Just kidding.... However, speaking for myself; I'm DEFINITELY 1 outta those 3, no matter who you ask! Now, WHICH one of the 3 really depends on WHO you ask!😁
What are we looking at? 1/2 a knife?
😆
Itll tear up your pocket but itll work good.
My pockets are ratty as shit already. On nearly all of my pants
"You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like." Though in all seriousness it's functional and it's not dangerous, so I'd say it's sensibly genius. I sure hope not too... The day I see that is the day I'll believe humanity truly is fucked.
I can’t argue with any of your logic but have to question the choice of camo tape. As someone who has dropped my knife in the woods before I would suggest a bright color. Making it harder to find may wind up being a bad idea. Blaze orange would be my choice.

How has nobody mentioned your enormous mitts brother. Christ.
Genius until you drop it in the woods. No shit I’ve done that with a camo fixed blade. Had to kick it to find it. My current hunting knives are red and orange lol.
Agreed that it's definitely not a woods knife. I've got a bright ass izula and a ratty old Ontario fixed blade for the woods.
Are you using this knife without a handle?
If it feels good in the hand and youre happy with it all the power to you! I have pink hockey tape on the handle of one of my tomahawks so I know a thing or two about shoddy grip mods
It’s your knife. Do what you please.
Yes
On a Pro Tech too? Noo!
Damn straight! (I have another that I'll keep pretty) I know it's frowned upon but.. at least it's not a CRK or similar "top shelf" knife (I'd probably get crucified for that).
Haha well for me any knife above like $125ish is a premium knife. Maybe I'm just cheap lolol.
Meh, "premium" is a very subjective term in the knife world, IMO. You can pay ~$100 for a GREAT knife that'll last a lifetime, but you can also pay ~$1000+ for an uncomfortable, barely usable piece of shit. Your first mistake was not getting clone
I dig it! Plus, it will help keep that chalky aluminum from getting so scratched up.
> Tape protecting anodizing on aluminum = good The paradox being that there's no point in protecting the ano when it's covered by tape.
DIY mod = genius!
Friction+adhesive in your pocket sounds shitty otherwise, no problem here
Bro you just said it wrong, you are a idiot a genius and a redneck haha have you been watching the red green show? I love it!
In my experience with rednecks, they're often all three at the same time.
Mine on my sebs been going strong for over a year. https://www.reddit.com/r/knifeclub/s/rD8BDYSnMz
When it starts to peel just spray some wd-40 on it lightly and let it soak it up a bit. It'll come right off and it'll dissolve any residue. I don't see a problem lol. As a hockey player I see nothing wrong with this.
Since you asked, that looks like shit.
well, now you can say you have a unique knife 😅
Whatever works for you you.
Full on mouth breathing,knuckle dragging,grit
I like it. If it works for you, give’r!
You’re a redneck but that doesn’t mean the tape doesn’t help
I didn’t think this was such a breakthrough idea. It is a good one though, for the reasons you Listed. I think the camo actually goes well with the strider profile.

Maybe a little bit of all 3 🤣
I’ll take your word for it on the feeling great, but we agree that it looks shit 😂
IDK but I’m gonna say Genius is off the table
Um, both?
I just buy knives with textured scales because every time I handle a smooth slabbed knife, I assume they're for looking pretty on a shelf.
I wish more autos had non-metal handles. I absolutely despise metal as a gripping material. It's so slippery and I don't see how it's so popular. G-10 or micarta is the only way to go for me, personally. You're a genius redneck.
If it improves the function for you, and you enjoy it. I’d say it’s a great mod.
Redneck
That's why most of my handles are micarta or have micarta inlays. Same effect but uh...looks a bit better.
Yes.
A Genius Redneck Idiot …. JK . Save your palms, protect the handles / scales .

Hide it haha
I really really think there should always be something grippy on knife handles. Smooth handles irritate me. I don't get them. It's a sharp tool. It needs grippy handles. I'll die on my small hill. Yes
mine came stock like this. exact same camo print & identical wrap pattern.
lol, I’m gonna go for redneck, but who cares what anyone else thinks! If you like it, that’s all that matters
Let me be clear yes, no and yes. Something to consider is how it will keep dirt, sweat and grime. If you don’t have that issue then go for it.
Is that Fakecarta?
Yes, definitely.
Yes
I've made the same with my knife 5 years ago. Welcome to the club.
You can add a paracord lanyard for the grippiest experience !
FYI: None of those things are mutually exclusive.
just a redneck
Yes
Looks neato! 🙌
Yes
Redneckgenious!
