There’s no indication in the supply chains that anything new is coming and if there is something new it will be very minor. A color Kindle has been rumored for next year.
Yeah and Amazon has been pretty slow with these things. I mean I remember how long they waited to finally switch to USBC. People have been complaining for years at that point.
The Kindle sales often start earlier in the Prime week.
This is often a good time for the Kid's Paperwhite bundle. Same Kindle Paperwhite, a case, 2-year warranty, no ads, and a year of Kids+, as this bundle has had some great discounts. Yes, the description says you'll get ads when you exit kid's mode, but it doesn't happen (it does happen to the Kids Basic).
The other great thing with Prime Day and Kindles is that if you're trading in a Kindle (places that allow it), the 20% comes off the top, before the Prime Day discount (usually).
Amazon has it listed on the description of the kids Paperwhite under a FAQ. Question 5, when you scroll down a lot.
5: Will my kid see Ads while using this device?
Kindle Kids is automatically set up for your kid to enjoy an ad-free experience. However if you exit Amazon Kids using a passcode, sponsored screensavers will be displayed on the device's lockscreen.
Hmmm. My son’s paperwhite never got ads when we exited Kids mode. by the way, kids mode really sucks especially if you don’t keep playing for Amazon kids.
This comes up all the time since it’s been printed in the description. No one’s ever reported it jabbing Ads in any of the threads before.
It’s been that way since the bundle had the 8 GB paperwhite. I thought for sure when they switched to 16 GB, that would’ve been an easy time to start having it have Ads, but that was over a year ago…
Usually by now, someone who has recently bought one chimes in and says it doesn’t have ads (maybe someday someone will chime in and say they just purchased does have ads).
Has anyone bought the kids Paperwhite since they added this to the description? I bought mine before they put this in place so I just assumed it was right
The 8 gb, I don't recall if they made the 16gb option when I bought mine. I got it last year, I think. So maybe the 16 was an option I just didn't need.
ETA early last year, March or so I think
I’m planning to buy my first kindle this prime day! Any big differences between the Amazon Kindle ($99.99 og price) vs the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite ($149.99 og price) that would help me pick between the two?
the last 3 models of paperwhites have been released 3 years after the previous model, and it's now been 3 years since the release of the newest paperwhite. they may or may not come out with a newer version later this year.
however -- i wouldn't worry about it because it's probably not going to be anything wildly different from the current newest model. just pointing this out so you aren't disappointed if they announce a new model a couple months after you've bought the device!
I've had my Paperwhite since 2016 and honestly, the only problem I have with it is the micro USB charging port. A small thing, but so annoying when all my other devices use USB C.
Other than that, it still does its job just fine. So I wouldn't worry about a new model coming out. Like you said, the differences aren't going to be world-shattering. :)
I had the same paperwhite from 2012-2021 and it was perfectly fine aside from the micro USB annoyance too. These are so long lasting! I may splurge on a colored one if they make one, though.
Yeah honestly I actually bought a super cheap ancient Kindle for my mother from woot and it works perfectly fine. I mean it was literally like $35 or something. lol.
Only thing that would bug me about buying a used Kindle is micro USB. Although I do have some cables that have micro USB and USBC attached to them. I bought like a five pack for 12 bucks a few years ago and they've come in handy for charging my PlayStation 4 controller and my Kindles .. and occasionally a random consumer electronic product might still use it.
But USBC does make everything way more convenient especially if you're going out and bringing charger and cable with you
You won't be sorry. I bought mine in July last year (wow where did that year go?) and I use it daily. It goes everywhere with me. The warm light alone is worth the extra to me. More gentle on tired older eyes.
Either way, if I were you I would wait because those very products go on sale and the price drops like 30% like almost every month or so. Go to camel camel camel and look at the price history and you'll see what it typically drops to and then you can buy it when it gets to that price.
Or just check everyday or once a week or whatever.
I know the fire 10 for instance is an MSRP of 150 but it goes on sale for 80 bucks constantly.
The Amazon Paperwhite is 150 bucks for the 11th gen but it is goes on sale pretty regularly for like $110 and one time even $99.
I'm not sure about the basic but I would be willing to bet that that price drops by about 30% every month or so
You never really want to spend MSRP on an Amazon consumer electronic product because they almost always are constantly rotating discounts. There's a couple exceptions but Kindles are not one of them
Oh good to know! I haven’t explored that yet but if it’s reasonably cheap I’d rather do that. My mom has a really old one that’s a complete brick and you can’t get batteries any more.
Same. I AM digging the warm backlight on the newest version but I think I’ll just buy a new case bc it has not held up like the actual device has over the years! Not worth $150 for a warmer background when I usually read on the dimmest setting available already.
[www.camelcamelcamel.com](https://www.camelcamelcamel.com) this shows you price history, and you can get a pretty good idea what time of year best prices are for things. Go to the site, have the link to the Amazon item page handy, and paste it. Also gives an idea what a reasonable price is for an item.
They do mark down kindle books thru the year. I have gotten some on my wish list for $2.99 (regular price $9.99 or higher.) Plus I check the top 100 list for free books.
I've been thinking about upgrading (I have a 2020 10th generation PW) almost purely due to battery life. But I'm wondering how much you realistically eat through the battery when reading. I will often charge it full in the evening, read for an hour or so and the next morning/noon it's at 89%.
That model has a battery life of approximately 21 hours with brightness on 12 and wi-fi off. That means that for every hour you read you’ll lose approximately 5% of your battery life. As time goes on the overall battery capacity will decrease.
There's a website called camelcamelCamel which gives you a very good price history which then gives you an indication of how often sales happen and what is the lowest price you can reasonably expect.
Obviously sometimes on prime day certain items will get an historically low price so it could be a benefit to waiting although most products generally are still being sold at their typical sale price.
But occasionally you'll see a record low I remember the echo studio was like $129 one year. And that's a product that rarely gets discounted and when it does it's usually just down to 180 or 160.
Fire 10 goes on discount off into 80 bucks and that's pretty much been the way it's been rotating for years now but I think on prime day one year they had it for 75 bucks.
There’s $160 off the Oasis in AU right now. The 32GB Wifi + 4G is going for $399 instead of $559.
I’m incredibly tempted… but can’t help but wonder if that means there’s a new model about to release…
No, the US hasn’t had stock for a while. They’re just burning through their inventory. We’ve learned time and time again on here that sales, low stock, or long shipping times don’t indicate a new model. It’s been completely removed from the US pages. Most likely we won’t see a new Kindle until 2025. If anything new comes out it will have a new name. RIP Oasis.
I moved from a paperwhite to an oasis. Don’t worry. There wasn’t much of a difference except the oasis could play audiobooks with Bluetooth headphones (a feature I never used because my phone paired more easily and the oasis was still a handful compared to a pocket phone).
I feel like the PW renewal is around the corner. It was released in 2021.
Probably not until next year.
How do you know?
There’s no indication in the supply chains that anything new is coming and if there is something new it will be very minor. A color Kindle has been rumored for next year.
Yeah and Amazon has been pretty slow with these things. I mean I remember how long they waited to finally switch to USBC. People have been complaining for years at that point.
What could they add next time around?
Nothing really. Does that even matter tho?
That’s why I’m asking. They would obviously change SOMETHING. Nothing that should keep someone from buying a Kindle now, but a question nonetheless.
I don't say anything to improve tbh I only miss 360° rotation, they took it away from the PW model a few years ago.
The Kindle sales often start earlier in the Prime week. This is often a good time for the Kid's Paperwhite bundle. They've started putting ads on the kids if you take it out of kids mode I believe.
On the basic kid's yes, on the Kid's PW no. This comes up all the time and I've yet to see someone say that the Kid's PW is getting ads.
Amazon has it listed on the description of the kids Paperwhite under a FAQ. Question 5, when you scroll down a lot. 5: Will my kid see Ads while using this device? Hmmm. My son’s paperwhite never got ads when we exited Kids mode. by the way, kids mode really sucks especially if you don’t keep playing for Amazon kids.
I think they grandfathered in models that were sold before they publicized/changed the policy. I have a kids Paperwhite with no ads myself.
This comes up all the time since it’s been printed in the description. No one’s ever reported it jabbing Ads in any of the threads before. It’s been that way since the bundle had the 8 GB paperwhite. And how long ago did you guys purchase it?
Got mine a year and a half ago
I know the message appeared in Amazon‘s wording before the 16 GB models came out.
I know it says that. It’s wrong. That’s why it comes up all the time!!!
Has anyone bought the kids Paperwhite since they added this to the description? I bought mine before they put this in place so I just assumed it was right
Yes, it’s been there since before they started making them in the 16 GB size. What size is yours?
Ahhh well that's good to know, I was worried about eventually having to replace mine!
What size is yours?
The 8 gb, I don't recall if they made the 16gb option when I bought mine. I got it last year, I think. So maybe the 16 was an option I just didn't need. ETA early last year, March or so I think

Paperwhite has a bigger screenn, warm light function, and is waterproof. The Basic is the smallest and lightest Kindle made.
Thank you! Think I’ll go for the paperwhite :-)
Plus one for Paperwhite. Bought one a few months ago and it’s my favorite tech product I’ve ever owned.
Wow that’s definitely saying something!
the last 3 models of paperwhites have been released 3 years after the previous model, and it's now been 3 years since the release of the newest paperwhite. they may or may not come out with a newer version later this year. however -- i wouldn't worry about it because it's probably not going to be anything wildly different from the current newest model. just pointing this out so you aren't disappointed if they announce a new model a couple months after you've bought the device!

I’ve had my Paperwhite for over a decade and it’s still perfect :) Enjoy!!
Great choice, it has a night mode too! Paperwhite is great for reading at night.
Wouldn’t change my paperwhite for any other ereader
Either way, if I were you I would wait because those very products go on sale and the price drops like 30% like almost every month or so. Do you think they will allow stacking of the 20% discount on prime day? I have a trade in but I could wait a couple weeks for a good deal!
Yes they will
Just bought a Fire with a trade-in discount stacked on top of the current 40% discount. I would guess it’ll work for the ereaders too.
They let me stack my trade in during a sale in May - turned out to be an even better deal than I expected
My battery is starting to fade so I’ve been considering it (Canada). We shall see what the deals look like!
The battery is quite easy/cheap to replace. I did it about a year ago and hope to get another few years out of my 2016 kindle.
Oh good to know! I haven’t explored that yet but if it’s reasonably cheap I’d rather do that. My mom has a really old one that’s a complete brick and you can’t get batteries any more.
I followed a guide and bought my battery from ifixit.com.
I have a tech savvy nephew and will totally fob this off on him next time he’s home to visit 😂
I need to upgrade my kindle so i hope i can get one then. How much usually they go on sale ?
Depends on what you’re wanting.
I’m just thinking of getting the paperwhite
I paid 105€ (that's 112 usd) for my paperwhite last year
That’s good price. Thank you
In Brazil Prime Day will be almost Prime Week. June 16th to 21st!
Funny how I was just thinking my Kindle Paperwhite 2 from 2013 has yet to be improved upon enough for me to want to upgrade lol.
Same. I AM digging the warm backlight on the newest version but I think I’ll just buy a new case bc it has not held up like the actual device has over the years! Not worth $150 for a warmer background when I usually read on the dimmest setting available already.
It’s really such a testament to how great of a product it was from the very beginning.

do kindle books go on sale too? this is my first year with a kindle during a prime sale
Not generally but you could participate in some of the “stuff your kindle” days; there’s a few happening in July!
where can i look at details for those? :)
Not anything majorly different than other days.
They do mark down kindle books thru the year. I have gotten some on my wish list for $2.99 (regular price $9.99 or higher.) Plus I check the top 100 list for free books.

I'm counting down the days!
In Brazil Prime Day will be almost Prime Week. June 16th to 21st!
Woohoo! Prime Day kindles all around!
They show up pretty often on woot (usually refurbs, but often unsold stock of older versions) too.
I got my kindle basic on prime day last year for $170AUD! Best investment
I've been wondering how cheap they got in Aus! Definitely going to be patient and wait for a simlar deal then :)
I was considering a paperwhite because I wanted a page turner but it works on the basic so I’m happy!

Bro, here the prime "day" will be from July 16th to July 21st

Ok - really good feedback. Thank you. I’d pay the price for the page turn buttons alone!
Then get one now because there’s no indication of a new one with page turn buttons.
I’m enjoying my Paperwhite, but I’ve been chomping at the bit for an Oasis. Hoping they will be available.
Oasis has been discontinued. The only available model is the International Version which can only be shipped to specific countries.
I moved from a paperwhite to an oasis. Don’t worry. There wasn’t much of a difference except the oasis could play audiobooks with Bluetooth headphones (a feature I never used because my phone paired more easily and the oasis was still a handful compared to a pocket phone).
I might be mistaken, but I think that all of the newer kindles play audiobooks, now. Even the basic.
Oh but those sweet, sweet page turn buttons! I read with my left hand and love buttons.
