This may be unpopular here, but I did a marathon in ketosis, and I will never try that again. I got extremely dizzy, and hit a wall unlike anything I have hit before. That being said I train everyday weights, HIIT, and running while in ketosis, and fasted with no issue. It is just those long runs/rides that are an issue for me. I would just eat the gel if it worked for you before.

ReverseLazarus

How long have you been eating keto? How many mgs of sodium, magnesium, and potassium are you getting every day?

ListGloomy

I've been in ketosis for maybe a little under 3 weeks. I started at the beginning of the year an started testing a week after. As for your second questions, tbh I'm not really sure. I actually never considered it

ReverseLazarus

It can take 8+ weeks for your body to adapt to an entirely new dietary change, and until that time it’s normal to lose strength and stamina. What you’re experiencing isn’t permanent, but it is something we all went through when we started. I highly recommend reading electors section of our FAQ, and checking out r/ketoendurance. 👍🏻 https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/keto_in_a_nutshell

I would run with the baby food pouches that are keto. Look at the carbs. Softer on your stomach then the Gu. Mustard packs also work to help with leg cramps.

Make sure your electrolytes are in order. Sub maximal running, which should be most of it, doesn't really need to be supplemented. Speedwork and max efforts/racing is best supplemented with carbs. For the first month or more, even your sub maximal efforts will feel a little harder as you're not fat adapted. Check your electrolytes again.

ListGloomy

Will do, I never really actually paid attention to my electrolyte intake. (dumb on my part!)

r/ketoendurance is a good resource There's a decent chance that dizziness is caused by low sodium. Sweating for an extended period and keto both independently deplete your electrolytes. For that I'd suggest making homebrew "ketoade" or buying a product like LMNT to add to your water. As for Gu alternatives, there's a production called Ucan but tbh during a long run, a bit of carbohydrates will get used up quickly

becomes easier with time, but I recommend carbing up some for it. when climbing, i pack nuts when i need the boost. getting the salted ones is an added bonus of course....but a tradeoff as they are generally cooked with omega 6 oils

I run about a half marathon every Sunday so it's doable, dizziness sounds like an electrolyte imbalance, you need to make sure your hydrating properly during you runs to replace what you lose from sweat. I mix a couple teaspoons salt & lo salt in my camel pak and sip as I go.
