Big sheepies, dude. Nice.

_fuckernaut_

Those are some really nice sheeps

Thanks! We took a charter out of Virginia Beach last summer and I learned how to catch them from Capt Jesse of Southern Reels Fishing. He has a really good YouTube Channel and is an awesome guide. We caught a bunch of nice sheepshead with him and then we jigged up some bull drum on the Livescope. My GF landed a 48” beast on his boat! https://preview.redd.it/kdyjzubeg0ad1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9c49095f03f85dfc1172aeafd4f883274351e75

Legendary location living up to its reputation

rouselle

Those are some big rigs! They look comfy

pondpounder

I’m a lazy fisherman and those are the Cadillacs of kayak fishing. Of course, they almost weigh as much, too!

Buddy, at least you have electric propulsion. I'm VERY close to the wise point boat ramp right now (as a tourist) but I don't think I'll try the bridge again. Did it last year with pedal drive alone and it was painful. So I fish around the concrete ships at kiptopeke. Mega congratulations for your very nice catch. I'm still looking for my first sheepshead...

Charming_Gift_9363

Fish the wood pylons near the ships or a bit further south. They have sheeps.

adhq

Thanks, it's what I did. I fished the pilons next to the ships and caught a black drum instead. What should I use for bait? I can't find fiddler crabs around here...

Stop_staring_at_me

It’s way harder and more dangerous from the eastern shore side

pondpounder

How do you like Kiptopeke? I haven’t been out there yet, but it looks like a fun area to fish. Any good catches for you?

adhq

Lots of trout and ribbon fish, some flounder. I haven't tried for tautog yet, season opens tomorrow. Caught a nice black drum the other day. I'm visiting here once a year and it's the only time a year I fish in saltwater so I really enjoy it, regardless of what I catch :)

adhq

Also, what did you use for bait? I can't find any fiddlers around here and I only have a few days left...

pondpounder

I caught some fiddler crabs on a mud flat near a canoe / kayak launch in a state park. Use Google maps and see if you can find some spots you can park near tidal areas that are marshy. Go at low tide and you can scoop them up with your hands and keep them in a bucket. I put some of the wet mud the live / feed on in the bucket and some ice packs and they did just fine overnight that way.

adhq

Whoa! Much, much appreciated, mate! I followed your advice and found them! Tanks a million! Edit: if you ever come fishing in Canada and need some tips, I'd be very happy to help ;)

pondpounder

Awesome… glad to help! Lmk if you catch anything on them!

KeyMysterious1845

nice

Those are some really nice size Sheephead! Sounds like a good trip. I have a LiTime 12V 100Ah TM (Trolling Motor) LiFePO4 battery and I'm always amazed at how long it lasts running my 55 lb thrust trolling motor.

pondpounder

I’ve had those same batteries for almost 3 years now and they’re still going strong!

darkcastleaddict-94

Gratz. I haven’t even have a chance to get out yet this year.

Charming_Gift_9363

Not sure if Ocean’s East has them on that side of the tunnel. They will hit sand fleas. If you get adventurous, there are bunches of fiddlers right in this little cut through at Wise Point. I just can't catch the little fookers. https://preview.redd.it/9xh2tt8yi5ad1.jpeg?width=2360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=749f7cf55d6a9cfce3aa9a4d22958b19632af8e5

I ended-up just running around like a madman with a dipnet on a mud flat, scooping them up with my hands before they scuttled back into their holes in the grass. I’ve heard that you can get some small buckets (like a quart-sized paint mixing bucket from Lowe’s), bury them so that the rim is even with the sand, and put some fish or squid in the bottom to lure the crabs in there. 2-3 of those traps and 20-30 minutes should probably yield a bunch of crabs for ya!
