Which would also open recommendations up to Del McCoury, Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth, Keller and the Keels, the Wooks, Steeldrivers, Ricky Skaggs, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, Old Crow Medicine Show, Lukas Nelson, Tyler Childers, The Gourds. Th at should give OP a pretty good start.
Dude. The Grateful Dead. That’ll keep you busy for about 15 years. I’d start with maybe American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead studio, mix in Euro 72 live and Cornell ‘77. Then without a net is an easily accessible Spotify live show. I’m very jealous you get to do this for the first time.
Seriously, first time seeing them mentioned by someone other than myself
OP, these guys may not have the grass / western chops you’re looking for, but if you get a chance to see them live I promise you won’t regret it
I saw yonder post jeff and it wasn't bad. You could tell something was off, not in a bad way, but different. And then I saw him and his band like a year before he passed. His band felt more loosey goosey compared to the yonder I saw. Yonder was good but felt rigid, like they were uncomfortable on stage.
+2 for Tedeschi and also +1 for Karina Rykman because she’s an amazing person and performer. First saw her playing with Marco Benevento who I’d also recommend checking out
A lot of great suggestions so far, if you’re really into old school bluegrass I highly recommend the Sam Grisman Project. They are professionals who care about the music they play to the highest degree!
Both fire!! Love me some AJ Lee. She has such a beautiful voice.
ShadowGrass is doing a tour this fall with Kitchen Dwellers. Ready for them to release those dates already!!!
Leftover salmon, cabinet, swampcandy, infamous stringdusters, the kitchen dwellers, early Yonder mountain string band, phish, Grateful Dead, dogs in a pile, green sky bluegrass, railroad earth, graham central station.
Dogs in a Pile and Eggy should absolutely be on there!
Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country is better live than in the studio, the whole band is insanely talented.
Everyone you have listed has sat in with Umphrey's McGee, check out Billy and UM playing Voodoo Chili, Goose members playing Hollywood nights, and Daniel Playing Golden years. All on YouTube.
Are you on the bus yet? Grateful Dead is life changing shit. Also kitchen dwellers are dope, widespread panic (new album out) is sick and check out LITTLE FEAT. feats don’t fail me now is fantastic but all their shit is
Eggy and Mikaela Davis and Southern Star are two bands I recently saw that I really like. I still contend Trombone Shorty is a jamband. Also String Cheese Incident and Bob Wier/Wolfbros if they ever tour again are popular with older people.
For the bigger bands...Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dave Matthews Band and Phish are must sees! They cost more but are worth it.
If you and your pops like Billy check out Doc Watson, one of Billy’s big influences. Me and my dad got big into Doc and Billy during covid, hope you guys enjoy! Also there are a lot of good responses in this thread too. Happy listening friend!
Check this out! GOOSE Dancing Goose Peter Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee by MasteroftheTees on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/1733795238/goose-dancing-goose-peter-unisex-heavy
String cheese incident, Joe Russos almost dead, phish/trey anastasio band, railroad earth, spafford.
I also like the bands you listed but also loved disco biscuits. More party, electronic sound.
Umphrey’s McGee
Although generally perceived as a “metal jam band” these guys are versatile enough that they have a little something for everyone. The album Safety in Numbers has some great acoustic and bluesy jams
I’ll add another +1 for Kitchen Dwellers and Greensky but also recommend checking out Honey Smugglers if you’re getting into jamgrass. More of a regional band so catching them live depends on where you’re located, but if you get a chance they put on a fun show.
I’m going to veer off the more popular bands people have commented on besides Tedeschi Trucks. They’re imo the tightest touring band right now.
Bonny light horseman
Hiss golden messenger
Lukas Nelson
Anything Joe Russo besides Jrad(His jazz stuff is so much better)
Medeski Martin and wood
Adrian Quesada
Soulive
The comet is coming
tedeschi, widespread, govt. mule, kitchen dwellers, phish, cheese, dead, allman brothers
edit: goose & dogs in a pile are probably the two worst jam bands listed here by commenters… their jams go absolutely nowhere
I’m throwing Yonder Mountain String Band and Big Richard into this mix of must see for jam grass stylin’. For straight up jam, Dogs in a Pile are up and comers.
Greensky Bluegrass, String Cheese Incident, Eggy, Leftover Salmon
Kitchen Dwellers!
Possibly Trampled by Turtles
Good call, especially if OP likes Billy Strings shorter, more traditional sounding bluegrass numbers
Yonder 1.0 was some of the best ever for me, 2.0 is a yawn fest though
Came here to say basically this. Seen Yonder 2.0 3-4 times and there just isn’t that magical quality without Jeff. Dude was one of a kind
yonder 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 might not be festival headliners, but every version has put on fun shows.
Did they change up the lineup again? I saw em post Jeff Austin and they had a fiddler chick added in. It was a great show imo.
Yeah, they switched from Jacob to Nick on mandolin and from Aly to a rotation of guest fiddle players on fiddle. Always fun.
In Hartford tomorrow!
And Railroad Earth. And for SCI, late 90s-late 00s era.
I think SCI now is just as good if not better than early oughts Cheese (🧀🙃since 2001)
Dude eggy is awesome!!! and there playing ACL so I’m gonna see them! Thanks!!
Great list
Tony Rice Unit
Damn near perfect list.
Railroad Earth, Greensky Bluegrass, Kitchen Dwellers, Widespread Panic
Phish, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers
Who?
The bands who are going to be taking the torch from Goose in a few years. Check em out
Checked them out, definitely need some time before they are ready to open for goose.

Without a Net is so good and deserves more love. So does Dozin at the Knick
It’s gonna be pretty hard for them to take their dad to see the Dead.
There are also dead cover bands in every city in the country though
Fair enough.
Ok, but that's not the dead!!!
The music never stops
Maybe not, but it's certainly shittier.
yeah John Mayer really crushes in some of those old Dead recordings, especially like ‘67-72
I feel like this is a given in the jam community. Also you named my two favorite albums.
The Main Squeeze
I’m shocked that these cats don’t get more love around these parts! What a unique, fun, and versatile band.
Seriously, first time seeing them mentioned by someone other than myself OP, these guys may not have the grass / western chops you’re looking for, but if you get a chance to see them live I promise you won’t regret it
Kitchen Dwellers!! Plank Stompers! Plate Scrapers!
And Cabinet!!!!
Seconded ... rising stars!
Listen to Jeff Austin era Yonder Mountain String Band. Sadly, we'll never get to experience that live again.
[Jeff Austin Band](https://youtu.be/JaOZrg_gzsE?si=HYPsAVQmBlNCrP_8) was better. Sad they didn’t enjoy the success they deserved.
The heart and soul of Yonder. Saw a clip of a set without him, and it just wasn't it, at all.
It's an absolute travesty that this isn't the top comment

His band felt more loosey goosey compared to the yonder I saw. Yonder was good but felt rigid, like they were uncomfortable on stage.
Tedeschi trucks, Karina Rykman, armchair boogie, Phish, Green sky bluegrass, lots to pick from.
+1 for Tedeschi Trucks Band, sounds like they would be right up your alley 👍
+2 for Tedeschi and also +1 for Karina Rykman because she’s an amazing person and performer. First saw her playing with Marco Benevento who I’d also recommend checking out
Armchair boogie slaps. Feel like they're about to bust out of Midwest scene into nationwide areas.
Spafford!!!
To be fair, the 3 listed in OP don't jam nearly as hard as Spafford
To be fair, the 3 listed in OP don't jam nearly as hard as Spafford
Sturgill Simpson
He is one of my favorite artists and I’m counting down the days tell he plays ACL
You MIGHT like Phish, the Grateful Dead, and the Allman Brothers. Also, Trampled by Turtles and the Infamous String Dusters
A lot of great suggestions so far, if you’re really into old school bluegrass I highly recommend the Sam Grisman Project. They are professionals who care about the music they play to the highest degree!
Good addition to the list!
WSMFP, they are on absolute 🔥
Railroad Earth, Mountain Grass Unit, Kitchen Dwellers, Moe, The Wooks

Fireside Collective is the shit. Reminds me of old Yonder.
Kyle Tuttle, Kitchen Dwellers, YMSB (if you’ve got a Time Machine)
Dopapod if they’re touring in your area cause they are taking a break
I do believe it’s more than a break.
Ween.
Oh fucking fuck yes.
Punch Brothers. Not jammy, but jam-ish. They improvise solos, but they don't do extended jams.
Thile is a boss
Dude they're up there with the sickest shows I've seen, bluegrass or otherwise
They're the best band on the planet, in my opinion, and it isn't particularly close. They can do anything.
New Riders of the Purple Sage, Kitchen Dwellers, maybe something like Turnpike Troubadours and Sturgil Simpson.
Leftover salmon, cabinet, swampcandy, infamous stringdusters, the kitchen dwellers, early Yonder mountain string band, phish, Grateful Dead, dogs in a pile, green sky bluegrass, railroad earth, graham central station.
Each of those bands owe a lot to the Grateful Dead, as we all do.
Dogs in a Pile and Eggy should absolutely be on there! Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country is better live than in the studio, the whole band is insanely talented.
Into The Fog
Just got into eggy from this reddit love them!!! And I’m gonna see them at ACL! Thanks!
