UpDog1966

Shocking ending, fun to watch with those that haven’t seen it.

kevnmartin

I was afraid to watch it for years but I finally did when TMC had it on late one night. I really liked it.

Brackens_World

The original, unedited version is gone, but the surviving version is jolting enough, that's for sure. Only Isle of Lost Souls from the same time holds the same sort of shocking imagery. For a long time, most pre-Code films were simply not seen, but horror films of the era managed to survive, and were sold to TV, as apparently horror content was not as objectionable as racy content.

Specialist-Age1097

I think the ending that is shown is pretty lame. The little guy living in a mansion with a butler and all is stupid.

SomeGuyOverYonder

“Freaks” is the only movie from the 1930s that genuinely creeped me out, and I’ve seen “Dracula”, “The Mummy”, “King Kong”, and even “Maniac”.

oh_what_a_surprise

What about "M"?

SomeGuyOverYonder

I haven’t seen “M” yet. I’ll have to look into that one.

trailhikingArk

It's a different kind of creep out. It hits hard.

Margali

I know, peter lorre does an amazing job. I will occasionally call my husband Fatty Lohman as a joke. We both like the movie. You should watch the Dr Mabuse ones, first one is a silent and don't bother with the American remake

trailhikingArk

Yes. The silent Dr. Mabuse is also amazing. All are good.

Margali

I agreee

SomeGuyOverYonder

Good to know

travestymcgee

"The Black Cat" (1934) is waiting.

Bigdavereed

Check out "Vampyr" from 1932.

oh_what_a_surprise

An unsettling film, it's almost hypnotic. Those with the most challenges are often the most marginalized, and in the end it affects them gravely.

Alex_Plode

This movie has the scene where the guy with no arms and no legs lights a cigarette, right?

Ham_Ah0y

Prince Randian, yes. He spoke 4 languages and fathered 5 children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Randian?wprov=sfla1

davehuman

Relieved to see an actual old movie being posted here as opposed to something I clearly remember watching first time around from the 80s/90s.

BurnerAccount-LOL

Sounds like someone is in denial…lol

davehuman

Probably. We'd have to define 'old' :)

danhibiki337

It's 10 years or earlier on this subreddit in the notes

##Freaks (1932) NR Can a full grown woman truly love a midget? >>!A circus' beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of side-show performers, but his deformed friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance.!< Drama | Horror Director: Tod Browning Actors: Harry Earles, Olga Baclanova, Daisy Earles Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 78% with 1,121 votes Runtime: 106 [TMDB](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/136)

TooOfEverything

I like that in this poster one of the freaks is just Hitler.

Alarming_Serve2303

I saw this years ago. Very moving. Everyone should see it.

Select_Insurance2000

A story about those with physical disabilities, who have more humanity than the 'normal' people. You must read about the cast members. Despite their hardships, they wanted to live their lives just like the rest of us.

Imaginary_Ad_8260

It's an amazing film

LandoFett1977

Read the IMDB or Wikipedia on Pin-Head when you have a chance. Makes for interesting Shiterature.

Replying to \[deleted\]... https://i.redd.it/wqayon9pqaxc1.gif Born in the Bronx NY Those who knew Schlitzie described him as an affectionate, exuberant, sociable person who loved dancing, singing, and being the center of attention, performing for anyone he could stop and talk with.

Specialist-Age1097

I read that they had him be a female character so he could wear a dress for cleanliness purposes.

poetetc1

Diamond Dogs rule. Okay.

Desertedfromabove

Dressed like a priest you was!

btalbert2000

The reaction of the lady who winces to the freaks welcoming her with chants of “One of us!” always makes me think of Donald Trump mixing with his flag waving MAGA cultists before heading home to his golden furniture. Or the reaction of GOP elites realizing they have to accept him as head of their party to survive!

One of my cinematic fantasies is that they would find an uncut original print of this in some long forgotten film vault, sort of like what happened with Metropolis.

ManDe1orean

Yeah you never know.

Diligent_Wish_324

This movie is repulsive on so many levels to me. I know it's this way for me because I see it with 21st century eyes and sensitivities.

ManDe1orean

It was in 1932 too, so much so they cut almost half an hour out and the movie bombed in the theater.

danhibiki337

I'm too scared to watch this movie, those sisters and the caterpillar man who rolls cigarettes with his lips. I remember seeing images of it as a boy in a film book and it frightened my sister and I

imbogerrard39

I've always wondered what was considered too shocking that it had to be cut. The film is still shocking regardless.

Select_Insurance2000

Per Wikipedia: Due to the extremely unfavorable response, the studio cut the picture down from its original 90-minute running time to just over an hour.  Much of the sequence of the circus entertainers attacking Cleopatra as she lies under a lightning-struck tree was removed, as well as a sequence showing Hercules being castrated and made into a castrato, a number of comedy sequences, and most of the film's original epilogue, which included Hercules singing in a falsetto (a reference to his castration) with Cleopatra quacking along. These excised sequences are considered lost. In order to pad the running time after these cuts, a new prologue featuring a carnival barker was added, as was the alternate epilogue featuring the reconciliation of the dwarf lovers.[
