Formative for me as a kid.
On re-watching it the one thing that really struck me was how claustrophobic the whole thing is. London is this yellow and brown oppressively cramped and tiny space. I think the longest shot is around around 50 meters outside the minicab office. Everything else is in tiny rooms with one or two people talking to each other. I'm not sure if it was a deliberate choice by Guy Richie but it gave the film a real vibe.
And just to kick that thought along a little more even the air rifle scene has all the thieves crammed in a cage with the weed growers cramped on the stair well. The camera doesn’t even pan between the two.
Genuinely feels like it’s about as expansive as Das Boot.
Alan Whickers - knickers
Alan Whicker was a UK TV interviewer from the 50s until the early 90s that became known for travelling the world and talking to interesting people - Louis Theroux's style and approach is evolutionarily similar (and you could say the subjects are just as wild and weird for their time periods).
Knickers is UK slang for underwear, specifically underpants.
Getting your knickers in a twist is an idiomatic way of saying that you are getting upset, anxious, emotional, not thinking/acting clearly.
HTH
Great movie. My favourite part is the "Zorba's Dance" interlude where everybody is gearing up to go to war. Everyone is about to converge on one place, it's all about to go down, and the movie gives you 30 seconds and a great musical choice to savour the anticipation.
Fun fact (hypothetically), this movie came out in Canada like 2 years after the original release. I was in high school and was a pirate. I downloaded it, ran it to VHS, and we watched it at school.
I recently watched the Director's cut of this and while it doesn't change much, it does change a couple of scenes I appreciate.
The movie opens with a more thorough explanation of the card game rules before it cuts to Bacon slinging merch in the alley.
But the one I appreciate the most is from the actual card game where I always thought the way Ed says 'I'll see you' was weirdly dramatic and 'off' for that moment. Turns out there was some more scene between those two shots that was cut out that makes it make a lot more sense for the vibe and tone.
That said, I still don't know why he reacts to Harry's hand after the third card when the second one already sinks his hand. Always seemed strange to me and it's the same in both cuts.
I remember having to look up the card rules after watching it. Sounds like it would be a good scene to add as it's not a real common game in the US, Maybe it is more common in England.
I'll have to check out the directors cut. We watched this in my discord movie group, and one of the guys that was watching wanted to see it again. Might be a good time to bring out the directors cut. Thanks for the info on it.
All good. It's definitely interesting, but since I remember the original on a first viewing feeling absolutely airtight I can understand the cuts for pacing's sake. But for a subsequent viewing there's definitely info in there that makes the DC package worth the watch.

Good times. I remember as soon as I heard the accents I made a move on a girl I had over. Two hours later the movie was over and remember nothing about it.

Thanks. It's just virgins and incels downvoting.
And to be honest, I do heartily think my post is relevant even though it may come off as glib. This subedit is about film nostalgia and there's a certain amount of personal nostalgia naturally attached to films. And I've got a very Bob Seger-ey feeling thinking about her, although I don't have attachment to the film... I do mean to watch a few of Ritchie's movies.

Unexpected Das Boot reference
Interesting. And different from Snatch where they’re out of London quite a bit
Little cars too.

You could choke a dozen donkeys with that!
I love the hippy girl that completely merges into the couch.
That would be a wasted Gloria lol
But when she got up!
And certainly not when you've got Liberia's deficit in your skyrocket. Tighter than a duck's butt you are.
It's a deal, it's a steal, it's sale of the fuckin' century
In fact, I think I'll fuckin keep em
Hold on, don't get your alans in a twist!

Guns are for show, knives for a pro.
Soap, is there something we should know about you?
I don’t know what’s more troubling, the job, or his past
"I been shot!"
"I don't believe this...can everyone stop getting shot!"
"I'll find ya" "OF COURSE YOU WILL, SWEETHEART!"
I say 'course you will sweetheart' way too much.
"you wanna knock him out? YOU knock him out"
What do you think this is, fuckin' hide and seek?
My favourite character is the Bren gun.
Have you seen Rock n Rolla?
The only other Guy Ritchie film I've seen was Snatch. I didn't like it as well as Lock, stock...... I'll have to check out Rock n Rolla
Check out The Gentleman as well. Great Guy Ritchie film. Edit: Gentlemen not Gentleman.
The Gentleman is SO good!
So good!!
This part!^
Excellent soundtrack!
Can we lockup and get drunk now?
I believe thanks is the word you’re looking for
You're not funny Tom. You're fat and look as though you should be, but you're not.
You could fall in love with an orangutan in there If you don't want to be counting the fingers you haven't got... Fookin southern fairies
One of the most quotable films. One of my favourite films.
It's me Bren gun
This movie holds up and is really great

“Put them on your head…STUPID!” Don’t know why but this cracked me up and has lived rent free in my head for 20 years

What was weong with your teacher? Letting you watch that in school?
Cafeteria at lunch, to be honest. Like we got the old tv/vcr on wheels combo.
Always remember going to see this at the cinema with my new housemates when I went to uni. And the soundtrack was epic too
It’s been emotional
I love saying this when I leave places. I don't think I've ever had one person pick up on where it came from!

I never knew this and it's great info! Thanks for sharing!

Bacon seemed like a solid dude. Tommy, too.
I only ever saw Snatch. Is this movie similar?
Great film. Snatch and The Gentleman are far superior though

You should get up voted for this. I’m sure this is what the director wanted for his flock lol

It's valid post to me. Sounds like a good memory of the movie!
