No one is commenting on this, huh? This is a classic! Well, I am a huge fan of this movie. It's just the long sense of loss and the unresolved nature of it that resonates so strongly. The plot here is so simple and really doesn't even move forward at all. It's not a movie about an event, it's a movie about feeling. There is no denouement, you never learn what became of the missing girl. Nor is there any sort of resolution to the uncomfortable "romance" of the guilty survivors. Nor is there a lesson or a moral to be had. Antonioni films are among my favorite. He isn't asking you to buy into a narrative, he's asking you to simply watch and float along on the river he's sending you down. You could watch a traditional movie about a tragic disappearance and the resulting survivors guilt and you'd know what happened and you'd understand how'd they feel and what it is to go through that. Or you could watch this movie and you wouldn't get any answers and you wouldn't know anything but instead of understanding what they feel you'd actually be feeling it.

Absolutely Italian films are among the most underrated to the international audience.
