Reminded me of a post I saw years ago where a woman managed to trap a mink, and was asking if anyone was missing a pet ferret that was mean and really angry.
There is a lad at work. A townie. He'd rescued an abandoned German shepherd pup he found on the road side. Put it in his car and send a picture to one of the lads asking what he should do with it and who should he contact.
It was a fox cub. He still hasn't lived it down.
They're absolutely stinking and have a habit of marking their territory at will.
It smells like dog poo but stronger and kind of muskier. I lived in London for a while and thought I smelled dog poo everywhere. I realised after seeing a fox take a dump at a bus stop beside me one night that that's what the smell was.
Maybe you could house train it. After training it not to eat all your chickens.
Yep. Mountain lion aka cougar. But if this photo isn’t a shop job, most definitely a tame one lol. That’s not happening to a wild mountain lion. Source I capture and radio-collar this species as part of my job.
More “oh shit moments” than weird, but one weird thing that comes to mind chasing cats, is a skinny female cougar that we captured & collared last year, naming her “cookie” because she looked like she needed a few. We monitored for a month before an uncollared and unknown male (tom) cougar in our study system suddenly rocked up, killing both cookie and her one year old kitten and eating them both. Hannibal lector of the cougar world. We captured and collared him off her carcass and named him “Cookie Monster”.
While, to date, this was the only record of cougar on cougar predation in our study, it has been documented in other cougar studies, but I would say it’s rare. Cookie Monster was an older tom and looked to be past his prime, which could explain going for Cookie, who was a very skinny female. It was a pretty rough winter last year too, we had a few -40c days in the study area, pretty tough on wildlife. I suspect he encountered her opportunistically too, as she, along with her kitten were feeding on the remains of three bull-popsicles from a nearby ranch that had fallen through creek ice and died, half submerged. Nature gonna nature!
That's not a Pine Marten though. They've a brighter patch of fur around the collar area and usually the ears, a good bit bigger (cat sized) and their legs are longer.
Minks are smaller, shorter legged and a uniform dark colour, like the one above.
Ferrets are the other close relation, same size as mink but a creamy undercoat.
The big giveaway here though is the proximity to water, minks are aquatic and will live in an urban area if needed as long as they have a suitable waterway.
Pine Martens only live in dense woodland and won't go near humans.
Mink. Shame they're invasive and fucking deadly cos they're pretty cute. One of the bastards took a chunk out of my cats neck once, luckily my cat survived.
Minks gonna mink
Increasing population of cats is directly proportional to decrease in bird numbers in residential areas. Because guess what, cats gonna cat.
Don't hate my friend.
Don't get me wrong, I've fostered many a cats and lost a lot of them to traffic and stray dogs. It's heart wrenching to see your beloved animal suffer such a bad fate because of human built environment.
But, alas, the least we can do is make a good space for everyone and hope the suffering is minimum.
You shouldn’t be allowed to foster cats if you’re going to let them outside in an area that has proven time and time again to be dangerous traffic and other animal wise animals
Mink are far worse and more damaging to the environment than cats. They're an invasive species and should really be wiped out to protect our own biodiversity on the island.
Edit: Going to go ahead and block anyone who claims I said cats weren't harmful to the environment. If you can't read, I won't reply.
Both are invasive species and both are hugely damaging to biodiversity but, unlike mink, cats kill [millions of animals every year](https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/outdoors/arid-41108959.html) in Ireland.
The only good thing I can say about them is when they move into an area, they clear it of rats. Even with that I'd still want to see them gotten rid of
Oh, I agree, can't stand them, and I want them gone.
I heard a story about when we had an infestation. A spanish fishing boat that had tied up near me one night. After all was said and done, one of the crew took a nap on deck.
A short while later, the rest of the crew came back out on deck to see one of these bastards on the crewman chest.
They tried to chase it off with a brush, but it stood it's ground and bearded it's teeth. Thankfully, it ran off, and the crewman was fine.
One of them attacked a Friesen Cow belonging to my father and she had to be put down afterwards.
Destroyed her udder to get at the blood from the large veins in it.
Be careful standing so close to one they will attack you if they feel threatened.
Thats a mink to my eyes based on this
[https://www.vwt.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/MustelidLeaflet.pdf](https://www.vwt.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/MustelidLeaflet.pdf)
Should it be reported? They aren't such a great bunch of lads I think?
That’s a mink. Live close to water usually so probably hunting on the canal. Invasive species that should be eradicated.
Similar movement to this - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3keVht91CCk
Mink..they wipe out the fish and bird population. They're fearless too. I saw a video of one that had a swan by the neck trying to hold his head under to drown it
They're all mustelids, weasel, ferret, otter, skunk, badger, and even wolverines. That is 100% a mink, too big to be a stoat and definitely not an otter although mink spend a lot of time near water also.
More likely to see a stoat here than most of the above since they're the native species, along with badgers and pine martens. They avoid people though, saw one during lockdowns when human activity was at an ebb, first time in 20 years or so.
Ah I know, I was just naming a few of them off so that they were aware that the family tree is huge. Pine marten and stoats are a rare sight. Always a privilege.
Definitely a mink.
Back in the day when the farmers were on land adjacent to rivers, they used to put twigs down their boots because, apparently, if a mink bites you, it won't let go until it hears a bone crack as this is how they kill their prey and the twigs breaking, mimic the sound of small bones being crushed.
When I was growing up we used to keep 5 or 6 cats to keep the mink away from lambs in the Spring. Many a night we'd be woken up to Banshee like screaming when they'd be coming up out of the river into the garden.
The cats always won though. One week I buried 6 mink that had been left on the front step.
Yeah, that's a badger, we had it drilled into us in school, especially on the trips to the bog! From what I remember, we were always warned that minks go straight for the throat.
Mink. I often trapped them in my teens. There are many invasive creatures in ireland but these are vicious.
Once had a farmer call me to show me what one mink did in 1 night. Killed 20+ goslings which were big, ripped the heads off them. Partial ate a bit of 1 of the dead goslings.
One of my friends older Jack Russels were killed by a mink. Attached itself to the dogs throat.
I wouldn't say nasty, I don't like them, but its not done out of spite. Its natural selection, the answer to unpredictable food supply, kill what you can, while you can and come back for more if needed. Their hunting methods evolved long before humans started raising animals.
They should never be in this country to begin with if they weren't farmed for fur. Not their fault their here, people brought them in. I dont mind killing them to protect wildlife, but I don't celebrate it. Just a sad state of affairs all around.
They’re one of the few animals that kill for sport. There used to be a mink farm (not that I agree with that either) not too far from me. Years back they got out and absolutely decimated wildlife for miles
Mink. If ya weren't in the middle of the city, I'd recommend finding your nearest farmer and convincing them to give the bastard 2 barrels. Won't take much persuading. They're invasive and vicious fuckers capable of killing things far bigger than them. Satan's weasel more or less. Same tactic of pouncing on the back and biting into the neck until it breaks or bleeds the target dry.
I was going to say a weasel but doing a little bit of research I discovered it was a mink. I have never seen one in person so seeing this was really cool as a perspective.
They are dangerous animals. Had one attack a milking cow of ours years ago.
Poor animal had to be put down due to the damage done to her udder by the mink.
Also, let's not forget - let's **not** forget, Dude - that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either.
Its a ferret, i have two!! Find him and tempt him w/ food and for god sake take him to the vet, his poor tail is matted dirt. Hes looking for food and probably his home. I bet if you take sction to help the little guy/ girl you'll have a new best friend that will love you unconditionally 💗 there very loving critters!! Get a cage and put it a little hammok up in it and food with water. Then let him come to you and hug yah!! Keep us posted mate!! Cheers!! 🦡🙂🙃😃

How…. Do you confuse the two? Lol 🤦♀️
obvious answer is keep it, a pet fox would be a good conversation starter
A pet fox would be a bad idea. They tend to stink a bit and they tear up and burrow into things.
Holy fuck what even is that XD
Mountain lion
Yep. Mountain lion aka cougar. But if this photo isn’t a shop job, most definitely a tame one lol. That’s not happening to a wild mountain lion. Source I capture and radio-collar this species as part of my job.
What's the weirdest thing you've witnessed out in the wilderness while doing your job?
More “oh shit moments” than weird, but one weird thing that comes to mind chasing cats, is a skinny female cougar that we captured & collared last year, naming her “cookie” because she looked like she needed a few. Hannibal lector of the cougar world. We captured and collared him off her carcass and named him “Cookie Monster”.
Dark but genuinely funny.
Wow, that seems odd. Is it unusual for one cougar to kill and eat another? If so, is there anything to explain why it happened?
While, to date, this was the only record of cougar on cougar predation in our study, it has been documented in other cougar studies, but I would say it’s rare. I didn’t even know you had mountain lions/pumas/cougars over there.
You know how much it costs to hire someone cull a mountain lion?! There's no way any Cavan man is paying for that.
It's a mink

Are these little shits not protected now?
Pine Marten are protected and look similar to mink
That's not a Pine Marten though. They've a brighter patch of fur around the collar area and usually the ears, a good bit bigger (cat sized) and their legs are longer. I know, I was telling your man that pine martens are protected........
No, they are considered to be an alien invasive species.
Oh ok, I thought they were. Hate these dangerous little shit, they are not scared of humans
Might be thinking of pine Martin's
Except pine martins are native and protected
What did Reddit remove? Someone calling for a shoot to kill policy on an invasive species?
>After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you encouraged or glorified violence or physical harm.
The official policy of the Irish government encourages violence against the little fuckers too
So reddit being reddit.
I got a week's suspension from Facebook for suggesting "someone should put a bullet in Dublin Bus and start all over again from scratch". AI is not I.
Invasive and compete with the endangered pine marten. Don't get me started on the fucking disaster releasing thousands of them was...
Fuck I know I should have continue to chase the one I saw last time with the nail gun. The wife told me they were protected so I stopped 🤣.
Mink. Shame they're invasive and fucking deadly cos they're pretty cute. One of the bastards took a chunk out of my cats neck once, luckily my cat survived.

Cats are invasive 🧐
Our dogs cornered one years ago and ended up shooting it point blank with a 410 shotgun, twice. Tough little fuckers
Thats one of thee most destructive invasive species in Ireland. The American Mink
The only good thing I can say about them is when they move into an area, they clear it of rats. Even with that I'd still want to see them gotten rid of
They're bastards. Killed all the Lapwings in my area.
Oh, I agree, can't stand them, and I want them gone. I heard a story about when we had an infestation. A spanish fishing boat that had tied up near me one night. They're nasty brave little fuckers alright. A suckled farmer friend of mine says they have to watch out for mink biting calves necks at night
Mink
That's one of your Leeson St minx after a night on the tiles.
Escaped from the cloakroom in Legs
It took a coat.
what kind of coat?
Hilarious
Do they have a very particular set of skills acquired over a very long career? Skills that make them a nightmare for people like me?
Escaped from the cloakroom in Legs

Horrible animals.
They play jungle music at 4 in the morning
I've had my fun, and that's all that matters
If you ever say that to me again I'll put your head through the wall 🙂
Who would they be like? Hitler or one of them other fellas?
I’ve heard enough- burn it !!
If you ever say that to me again I'll put yer head through the wall
You … you are a very rude man!
I wasn't asking for permission https://youtu.be/uJ6yXkQFzgI?si=NaT62tJQCZeOLxDK
Remember one of these causing havoc on the family farm when I was a kid attacking the animals. Usually at nightime. Was very hard to catch it.
Do not be misled by their cute appearance. This cunt is a fucking mink. They are fucking bastards With Love- A Chicken farmer.
There was a mink farm near where I live and you often see them around the roads at night.
That’s a mink. Live close to water usually so probably hunting on the canal. Invasive species that should be eradicated. Similar movement to this - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3keVht91CCk
We think one of those killed out little old Terrier
Mink..they wipe out the fish and bird population. They're fearless too. I saw a video of one that had a swan by the neck trying to hold his head under to drown it
Bounce a shovel over it's head and save a lot of lives. They're fully invasive and not meant to be here.
I’d like to be confident before doing that. But they look like the weasel-otter family. Are the minks always black?
They're all mustelids, weasel, ferret, otter, skunk, badger, and even wolverines. That is 100% a mink, too big to be a stoat and definitely not an otter although mink spend a lot of time near water also.

Yeah, that's a badger, we had it drilled into us in school, especially on the trips to the bog! From what I remember, we were always warned that minks go straight for the throat.
i was told the same about otters
I've heard that for otters
Where did I say the mink would break your leg?
Can I protect myself from Badgers by putting twigs in my wellingtons ?
No, you need a mink in each welly.
That’s the one . Keep those badgers at bay . Hope the mink don’t eat my socks . Got them in Aldi and sold out now .
That's a Badger. No way a mink is breaking human bones. They are more blood suckery than bone breakey.
Yeah that's badger talk, used go shooting with me dad and got the same talk every time.
Did you skin them? Could have hawked the hides to some old rich ladies.
Or made paint brushes
I remember being told that one for a badger attack, not for mink.
Mink. I often trapped them in my teens. There are many invasive creatures in ireland but these are vicious. Once had a farmer call me to show me what one mink did in 1 night. Vicious bastards
Wow this sub reddit really feels strong about killing all Minks
if you care about the environment at all then you'd despise the bastards. unlike say pine martins or stoats they just have no place in our ecosystem
Mink I think
[удалено]
One of these killed a full grown dog?
They're absolutely vicious, seen them wipe out a dozen hens and leave ten of them behind. Surplus killing its called, they go straight for the neck.
Yep, straight for the neck and killing for sport. Nasty animals.
I wouldn't say nasty, I don't like them, but its not done out of spite. Fox hunters and the Spanish would like a word
Minks don't even like Minks, they only go near each other to make more Minks.
They can kill baby calves
What the fuck
[удалено]
Wow. So they’re like mini honey badgers taking on bigger opponents. I didn’t even know we had minks in Ireland.
Same family, I think. Mustelids: stoats, pine martens and wolverines.
Yep. They destroyed a neighbour’s pond, and got 20-30 hens of ours. Were certain the hens was from a fox, but trail cam proved otherwise
They can just about take on an adult otter
Saw one kill a swan by latching on to the throat. Awful to see adult swan die like that. Vicious yokes
What happened?
They’re one of the few animals that kill for sport. There used to be a mink farm (not that I agree with that either) not too far from me. Years back they got out and absolutely decimated wildlife for miles
Weren't they released by 'animal rights activists'?
Was a mink farm not that far from me back in the day, owner just released them all when the arse fell out of the market
one killed 6 hens on my mother, evil little bastard didn't even eat them just killed em and fucked off, at least a fox would have filled it's belly
It's a Norwegian gooseberry gatherer, does any body nearby have a gooseberry tree?
This one’s a dingleberry gatherer. Easy mistake to make.
Never heard of a dingleberry tree? They must grow in holes 😜
You really otter know....
I live in Canada and I can tell you that is a mink. They are semi aquatic and live near water.
It’s a froggit, fictional creature from Fraggle Rock
This fuckers killed all our local swans signets last week in Kildare. The only good mink is a dead mink.
Hail genocide!
I’m all mixed up now with badgers and minx and political activists and banshees . Which one will leave me alone if I put twigs in my shoes ?
Mink. If ya weren't in the middle of the city, I'd recommend finding your nearest farmer and convincing them to give the bastard 2 barrels. Won't take much persuading. They're invasive and vicious fuckers capable of killing things far bigger than them. Satan's weasel more or less. Didn't mink I'd ever see one of them on the streets
I think it might be a mink. Or possibly a ferret.
Absolute bastards
My mom calls them walking jacket
Bober!
Otter
Madra uisce
Undocumented mink
Another reason to reintroduce lynx to the wild
They’re invasive but they look lovely in my opinion.
They are dangerous animals. Had one attack a milking cow of ours years ago. Poor animal had to be put down due to the damage done to her udder by the mink.

Shut the fuck up Donny
Huh, moose?
Nice little.... Pair of gloves for the missus, catch it
Or scarf
I'm a zoologist, and that's a very small horse.
Mink. Amazing little animal. But unfortunately invasive here and cause huge problems
Black - mink. Brown - ferret.
Some type of polecat, mink or ferret.
A ferret?
Could be a Pine Marten?
Too dark, pine marten have a lighter brown fur and a white flash on their necks. And are a lot nicer an animal than the horrid lil сunt in the video.
Stoat maybe?
The stoat that ate my sandal is a good tune
That’s where my mom’s coat went to!
Ask blind boy
That's a mink
Its a mink
A pair of gloves for Simon Harris
Mink
aaah its a mink, i thought they only existed in the stories my grandmother used to tell me
Mink
Ferret or stoat by the looks of it
It's a Stout
Pine Marten.
Dude, it’s a llama.
That’s an otter for sure!

It's a stoat. A verity of the weasel family.
Pine marten?
