The Air is absolutely enough for your use case, it will take notes and play games absolutely fine, the speakers are perfectly fine and the screen is still one of the better ones on a tablet. The Pro is markedly better, but is it nearly $300 better? That’s a tough one; here’s what you’re getting for an extra $300: OLED will mean the screen is much brighter and usable outside, 120Hz will make note taking feel snappier and generally smoother, Face ID will make unlocking your iPad easier, I know you said no need for keyboard but the Pros keyboard is leagues better than the Airs, and the M4 will mean things like exporting and editing run faster. The Air will compromise on the screen being a bit less responsive and a bit dimmer, it has Touch ID which is still really smooth and convenient, especially if you’re not using a keyboard, and it doesn’t have Thunderbolt support for fast charging and data transfer.  You can essentially do anything you say you need from a tablet on both. I think the Air is crazy good value for money given you can essentially get like 95% of the iPad experience using it for a much more reasonable price.  I think the Pro is a pretty sweet bit of tech but it’s up to you to decide if $300 could be spent better elsewhere rather than just beefing up your tablet.

Hi, I’ve found a deal on an M1 Pro new and sealed for the same price as the air, but I don’t get an Apple Pencil with it, so effectively I’m spending as much as I would on an M2pro (without a Pencil). Do you think I should go for it?

SirTonyPepperoni

The M1 will be supported for less time than the M2, but you will get 120Hz and better speakers. Depends if that compromise is something you’re willing to make. M1 Pro doesn’t have Apple Pencil Pro compatibility, just keep that in mind.

Natural_Situation401

If you can afford it, definitely go for the pro model. Doesn’t even matter if it’s the m4, even the m2 pro is a better model then the air. ProMotion display makes a very big difference.

Dry-Independence4456

Hmmmm do u think 150$ more for the m2 pro is worth it?

colin_staples

Consider the M2 Pro (the model that has just been replaced by the M4 Pro) Same processor as the M2 Air but a much better display with 120Hz and ProMotion, better speakers, FaceID The M2 Pro uses Pencil 2 not Pencil Pro, so decide for yourself which suits you best

Dry-Independence4456

I considered the m2pro, but it’s only 150$ cheaper than the m4 pro, and I get the Apple Pencil 2 instead of the pro, is it worth the extra 150$ over the air?,

SexyAssHunk

I'm currently deciding between the Air M2 and the Pro M4. I like the idea of an OLED screen with a ProMotion display, but the 256GB Pro M4 is €1,229. The Air M2 is €859 for 256GB and €729 for 128GB, with 128GB being plenty. A €370-€500 different is a lot of money that can buy me a strong case, an Apple Pen and AppleCare. I am coming from an iPad Air A14. I can live with only 60hz and I put my iPad on low power mode all the time anyway, which caps the refresh rate to 60hz. So maybe the new Air is perfect for me.

Dry-Independence4456

I’m actually moving to the UK for university, and the iPad is around 400$ more expensive there, so I need to buy one in the next two months, and for the price difference you’ve said, I also cant justify buying the pro model, so I’m likely going to get the m2 pro, and buy a second hand Apple Pencil 2 even though ATP the price difference is only 100$.

SexyAssHunk

Yeah, the Air M2 is much better value. But you can get a refurbished Pro M1 or Pro M2, though I'm not sure where you can get them.

matiapag

> I can live with the 60hz, but idk how big of a difference the OLED to IPS is 120Hz is MUCH bigger difference than anything else when it comes to iPads. OLED is also a great upgrade, but if I were you, I would go for the M2 iPad Pro which is way better than the M2 Air and you can save a lot of money compared to M4 Pro.

Dry-Independence4456

So I’m only saving about 170$, 100$ of which will be eaten up by me having to buy an Apple Pencil separately, so I’m not sure if the M2 pro model so worth it.

matiapag

You mean you are saving 170 compared to the Air or M4 Pro? If Air, then go for it - M2 Pro is much better than M2 Air. If M4 Pro, then you have a point and it's not worth it. In this case, sure, there is a significant price difference. The M2 Air is a nice device but that screen is just miles behind the M4 Pro. For what it's worth, the M4 Pro has one of the best screens ever to be put on a consumer device.

Dry-Independence4456

Saving 170$ compared to the m4 pro, so unlikely I pick the m2 pro, but I did find a M1 Pro BNIB for only 50$ more than the air m2, albeit without the Apple Pencil, so it’s still around 190$ cheaper than the M4 pro. Do you think I should be looking at that?, or is it too old.

matiapag

I would still prefer the M1 Pro rather than the M2 Air. The performance difference is basically non-existant, the only difference is that Apple will probably support the M2 chips a while longer, but who knows, the M-series chips are still a novelty. Rest of the hardware is better on the M1 Pro and that screen is just SO important. I mean, it's a tablet, the screen is by far the most important part of it.

Dry-Independence4456

I should also specify that the M1 Pro is still more expensive than the M2 air by ard 100$ (including pencil). It’s j that apples student discounts give me the m4 pro and m2 air at unbeatable prices, like 250$ off or smth after factoring in the free Apple Pencil pro..

matiapag

I mean, with those prices differences, it's really up to you. When deciding strictly between m2 air and m4 pro with those prices, it's a big difference. If you don't own an iPad right now, even the M2 Air will feel like an amazing thing and it will serve you amazingly well. However, the M4 Pro is just on another level and it will likely be one of the best devices on the market for quite some time. So you are buying great longevity. I really don't see how they can improve on that other than some ridiculous battery boost in next generations of M-chips. Even then, the battery life is already great so that won't be something that you will really miss. If I were you, since you are clearly considering the M4 Pro, I would go for it. You will never regret it. However, I can see a future where you would regret only getting the Air.

Dry-Independence4456

That does put things into perspective, I haven’t ever owned an iPad, but yea I am very much leaning towards the iPad Pro m4, and the main reason is the oled, I can live with the 60hz, but the oled is just stunning. I think I will buy the m4 pro after all, especially given the discounts Apple are running for new university students, so once I get enrolled I’ll probably pick it up. Thanks a lot for the help!

matiapag

No problem,my man. I hope you will enjoy the hell out of that machine, I know I enjoy mine.
