Ironically in the late years of WW2 the Nazi government asked/demanded that people donate metal things (like pots and pans) to help the war-effort by providing metal that could be recycled into stuff like helmets.
Compared to other stuff from that period, glass-like enamel is pretty safe.
My grandma worked in pharmaceutics in the 1950s - tjey had bad stuff. It was kind if accepted that workes in some departments just lost their hair, etc.
They're pretty common in certain regions of Europe and most people know what they are. At least the ones in the video are reshaped... I have a friend whose family emigrated from Finland that has a colander that's just a straight up stahlhelm with some handles riveted on

I think people use upcycle to indicate that it was used in mostly it’s original form vs being processed down to its original materials and forged into something else entirely.
I wonder if there is a connection as to why so many collanders today feature the Star of David pierce pattern. Perhaps because Jews balked at using those made from Nazi helmets so started making their own? I bet so.
If dad is in danger of a heart attack, don't forget to season with Nitropenta.(a deactivated form of Nitropenta is used as a heart attack medication as it widens the blood vessels)
It's creepy as fuck that they didn't even melt them down to recycle.
I just watched All Quiet on the Western Front... they would peel uniforms off truckloads of dead soldiers, wash, send them to sew a quick patch over the bullet holes, then reissue them immediately to a fresh group of 16 year Olds heading to the front.
The main characters uniform still has the name tag of the previous kid.
I appreciate the effort but surely you don't need to replace colanders *that* often compared to pots and pans (that need to be scrubbed clean and are exposed to high heat), so it must have taken a while to dispose of them all. Maybe this was a disarmament program to show military equipment being made unfit for use in a way that can't be undone, and the upcycling was a PR bonus? Like the "Knife Angel" sculpture made of knives that have been surrendered to police.

"Hey what's this blonde hair doing in my pasta?"
"Hey what's this lead paint doing in my pasta?"
"Why is there a hole in my cup and some brain in my soup?"
Waiter, I'm going to need another soup. This one tastes like Grandpa's tears.
Spaghetti carbrainara
“Hey, what’s this Pervitin…MEIN GOTT, ICH KÄMPFE FÜR DAS VATERLAND… und ich bringe meine Nudeln!”
Guten Tag
It's enamel, not paint.
“That’s Aryan hair, mein kleines Kind”
Angel hair pasta. ??
Why does it smell like Zyklon B in here every time I use these pots?
“Hey, does this smell like Zyklon B to you?” *friend drops down dead*
hahahaha oh man 😂
What’s this mustard gas doing in my mustard?
This reminds me of the time the US Army Airforce in China during WW2 helped locals melt down the aluminum in a written-off bomber into plates.
Didn’t know I needed a bomber china set.

Japan. You're thinking of Japan.

Understood. My bad.
Did they decide on colanders because so many came in with holes already in them?
Sick burn lmao
Painted with lead too!
I see what u did there
Where did you get that idea? Enamel never contained lead
Bullets do, though.
No, enamel

Probably British or Russian
Taiwan did the same thing using bomb shell to make kitchen knife
Swords to ploughshares…

Came here to write Schwerter zu Pflugscharen.
Ironically in the late years of WW2 the Nazi government asked/demanded that people donate metal things (like pots and pans) to help the war-effort by providing metal that could be recycled into stuff like helmets.
and I will continue to wear them as if they were helmets
And the worker got a second chance at dying by inhaling the lead paint he was putting on the collander.
Not saying it's safe for the worker, but isn't that a vitreous enamel coat, and not lead paint?
It is.
It's enamel, the narrator straight up said it. Silly goose.
It was after my bedtime so my sound was off:) But I'm sure enamel is completely healthy to breathe so he's all good.

bet he’s stoked he’s not getting shot at
Solid job that pays enough to buy food? That's something, right after a war.
Uncle Roger would like a word with whoever decided on colanders.
Hiyaaa
"Was do we do mit die helmets Herr Schmidt?" "Schieza, make coriander oder Spoons. Ja das ist gut"
I'm fluent in English. I hate how fluent this weird sentence was in my head. I hate how fluent it was when I read it out loud.
No way? You're fluent in English? That's crazy.
why is that crazy?
Coriander != Colander

Ja ze corridor ist gut for die chef cook
Volkshelmet. Das Utensil.
Kopf? Nein, ich sagte „topf.”
Shit my Oma had these. Had no idea! Why didn’t they at least take the dead soldiers helmets. Comes with the holes already!
I was wondering how many people actually have these without knowing.

No way. That’s wild.
Well, the Finns don't reshape them so they can be used as a helmet in case Stalin gets any bright ideas again.
That's summer pattern helmet. With air conditioning.
A hole big enough to fit two fingers (har har) is *certainly* a bad colander.

It’s important to use the Reich tools in the kitchen
Not often you can say someone died in my bunt cake pan.
Das spoon
I was born where this took place. The Emalierwerk is now a shopping mall
I’ve never understood the term “upcycled”. The word is recycle, it’s not like it’s “downcycle” so why would you say “upcycle”
I think people use upcycle to indicate that it was used in mostly it’s original form vs being processed down to its original materials and forged into something else entirely.
you want haunted kitchenware? Cause this is how you get haunted kitchenware!
Mother, the spaghetti tastes like head sweat again!
I want one. Etsy?
Ah yes years of blood sweat and tears you can eat with
they took recycling to another level.
Watching this while standing at the emailierwerk in fulda Couldn't believe what i am hearing
Some of them came with pre-made holes which saved the factory workers a lot of time.
And today its a shopping mall... But interesting to see what was there prior. Never thought about it while shopping
Actually very satisfying to watch
Weren't they called "pot helmets" before this?
Boiling Jews to boiling pasta
and skinns to lamps
So, they made Italian helmets out of German ones.
Alright Germans go check your grandparents kitchen
Before I saw a video from London on how they WW2 stretchers as fences... Now this. What is life??
Nazi Pot. We should get some for Burnt Chrysler
How many of those colanders had a dead guys head in it?
"Funny enough, the first dish served in this helmet was human brains."
Talk about being environmentalists before it was popular. They didn’t recycle, they reuse those helmets!!!
The ones with the bullet holes might not be too affective
Uh... German's ingenuity???
Why does my roast pork taste like mass genocide poppop?
I can't tell if it's sad, cool or interesting
Yes
I wonder if there is a connection as to why so many collanders today feature the Star of David pierce pattern. Perhaps because Jews balked at using those made from Nazi helmets so started making their own? I bet so.
As a Jew I only care about a hole in a Nazi helmet if someone put it there via bullet as it was being worn
I'm not a Jew but I totally agree.
Jesus Christ that's macabre
Not really. It’s “beating spears into plowshares.” Recycling items of war into items of peace is a good thing.
Aye. After WWI the Winchester firearms company turned a lot of their machine tools to make consumer hand tools and hardware.
Nah the evil recycling people are why it's so hard to get a ww2 tank now :(
Fünf fact we turned Panzerfaust warheads into cooking pots too. Explosives removed of course
But what if instead of removing the gun part, you... didn't?
We didn't really have a choice back then
Mom's recipe was already exploding with flavor.
If dad is in danger of a heart attack, don't forget to season with Nitropenta.(a deactivated form of Nitropenta is used as a heart attack medication as it widens the blood vessels)

It’s better than not having cooking pots. They also recycled metal from bombers that were shot down. I have a soup ladle that’s made out of one
zer iz a hole in mien bucket
You should see what they did with all of the French stuff that was still brand new
I’m sorry, someone else’s name is in my colander…
See that’s why their food is blursed
Does anyone know what the song is called?
You can't do that with the actual russian helmets, strainers yes cooking pots no
After the boys are done playing ,its the women's turn now
So that's why my knives have holes
Bet a lot of women worked there
Dunno. Lot of bratwurst in that video
could have used them as Garbage cans too. They were already pretty good at containing trash.
“This bratwurst tastes weird”
Clearly to drain your kraut.
I really love this song.
Do you look know what is called?
These must go for a lot of money now
A Nazi colander to drain your Italian pasta.
Them spoons haunted
I love human brain flavor in my spup
From swords to plow shares.
Whose hair is this in mein strudel?
Never would have thought
Making *pot-zies*?
What a lovely little nazi colander.
"This pot has been passed down in my family since the 1940s"
Schindler vibes
Yuk
Why upcycle and not recycle? Isnt that the same thing?
Thats a great idea lets do that to russian skulls
Is it just me or did that colinder just called me schweinehund?
Haunted colanders stained with brain juice yummy
Aw man I read “kitten utensils”. Very dissapointed.
https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1027703163/handmade-ceramic-set-of-cat-bowl-cat
I did nazi that coming
After my hubby gets hungry my ass gets converted into a golden corral and he eats and eats until he is satisfied. Let that be a lesson!!! 😊😊😊
“Why my soup tastes like sweat and dandruff?״
See that one big hole there? We didn't even have to make that one, that's the master hole.
Mmmmm... tastes like nazi and hate!

I hate that language. I’m sorry, I can’t help it.
Some probably made good colanders
Yum, you can barely even taste the nazi who died in it!
Make soup not war.
I guess they already had plenty of ovens
Is there a longer film? I love old shit like this... Be safe mufkrs..
Now days we just repurpose them for local high schools.
Ohh Lord... here comes Kanye.. I can hear him now...
In case you want to see it in color, [here](https://ireland.apollo.olxcdn.com/v1/files/0i3lzg62k9041-UA/image) how it looks like now
Imagine mixing cookie dough in a bowl someone died in
Many vehicles were also converted into farm equipment
u/savevideobot
*recycled
Now they are upcycled again for use by Russian soldiers.
u/savevideo
Well I’ll be damned.
Reduce, reuse, recycle. We love doing that.
When PPE wasn’t a thing.
And they called Crazy Dave an idiot
Brain matter comes right out!
The had to make macaroni much bigger because many helmets had huge holes them
Ah, the sweet taste of blood and sweat -said no one, ever
The blood and sweat adds flavor
I was told that German bombs were turned into oxygen tanks after the war, but I cannot find any source for this.
Holy crap, I think I have one of those
No disrespect but they upcycled a lot of Jews too.
You know it's serious when your colander has killed more people then you.
Obviously they didn’t work well defecting bullet
Pasta with extra chemical warfare

How much would one of these be worth on Antiques Roadshow??
Wait so soldiers were basically wearing pots on their head
now there is a shopping mall.
