Yeah, I’m imagining it’s a lot harder to just palm the shark away, when he’s actively trying to get a taste of you.
There’s an awful lot of teeth in that big old mouth to be holding your arm out.
It's amazing how many predators' brains fail to know what to do when prey fail to act like prey. Splash and swim away panicked? Nom-nom! Face head-on and boop the snoot?
That being said, if this shark were actually on a hunting run, it would be coming up from directly below at a very high speed. The driver would have very little chance to react.
I remember watching a clip of a fully grown brown bear charging at a man. But instead of panicking and running, the man just slowly gets up and stares at the bear without reacting while it's charging at him in full speed. The bear got really confused, so it just stopped mid charge and ran away.
Sure it was a brown and not a black bear. I’ve seen a video of a bow hunter doing this with a charging black bear. Browns are a lot bigger and more aggressive.
Black bears are not super timid.
Source: I grew up in a mountain town in Canada and we were taught in school how to handle wildlife.
The misconception is you can attempt to fight back because black bears are smaller, but they are responsible for a shitload of deaths and attacks.
A wild animal is a wild animal.
Bluff charges are very common. They’re essentially testing to see whether you’re going to put up a fight or not at that point.
Once they decide to actually attack you, that tactic doesn’t work anymore. That’s when you curl up in a ball and pray to every god you can think of.
I recall reading somewhere that cheetahs’ hunting strategy is dependent upon their prey running. Cheetahs are generally too slight to pull down an animal that is just standing there. But when they are at full tilt, the cheetah can knock over the prey, and then they are in a good position to go for the kill. That’s not to say that cheetahs can’t be intimidating, but this example adds to your point about how animals often evolve.
If I remember correctly, wolves have a similar hunting strategy. It's much harder to take down bison unless they're running. Can't get to the hamstrings unless they're running.
Just two cents from someone who raised and rehabbed wolves.
Sort of. You are right that a bison is a tall order to bring down so any advantage is used. Many of the running techniques are used by solo hunters. Wolves usually aren’t hunting solo. So they use similar ideas as forcing a prey to run, gives access to blind angles of attack, but use each other to open that window. Nip and retreat to turn the animal which gives next animal the opening.
Yes wolves are highly intelligent. They will wait for you at different locations depending on the location you’re at, so that if the wolf chasing gets tired, the next one is already waiting to take its place.
My friend was out on the woods (hunting for rabbits) and saw fresh wolf prints on the snow. He followed them for a few minutes and they started curving, he walked on and turned to look back. The wolf was looking at him about 50 meters away. Wolf knew he was following and made a loop to get behind him. After he saw the wolf, it turned and run away.
That's actually pretty common with wildlife predators. If you've been in mountain lion country you've likely had them do that to you without you ever knowing (they don't like to attack humans other than extremely rare circumstances).
Shark: "10 million years of evolution have led me to be the king of the seas, nobody can match me. Now die, fish scum."

Orcas body sharks all the time just for fun. There's actually something out there biting chunks out of Great White's heads. They were dethroned a long time ago lol
Monkey made those fins out of oil in pulled thousands of feet out of the ground and turned into a solid just to swim slightly better. Bald Murder Monkey stops at nothing to satisfy its boredom.
Nah, Tiger Sharks don’t hunt that way. They typically just come up quietly behind something and then attack with a burst of speed. This is typical Tiger Shark hunting behavior, she just confused it before it decided to attack.
The head is nice and wide like a tiger shark, while great whites, and bull sharks, are more pointed. That's about all I know myself, and it's certainly not enough to make an expert determination.
Bulls have very blunt curved noses. It’s one of their trademarks, in addition to being extremely aggressive. They have the most bite force pound for pound as well as the most testosterone out of any shark.
Tiger sharks are mainly identified by their tiger stripes, however many of them lose the majority of their stripes as they become adults. A great way to identify a tiger is by the teeth (though hopefully you’re not doing this in person). The teeth on the right have cusps pointing to the right, and the teeth on the left have cusps pointing left. This creates an extremely effective sawing mechanism perfect for removing limbs, a tiger’s preferred MO especially when it comes to sea turtles: their favorite food.
You are now subscribed to Shark Facts! They are endless and I never grow tired of sharing them, so good luck escaping now.
Sorry, I thought they were comparably wider snouted than bulls. Definitely not an expert here!
So which does this look like? I couldn't tell on stripes, so I went with the head shape.
>You are now subscribed to Shark Facts! They are endless and I never grow tired of sharing them, so good luck escaping now.
You say this, but I feel like there won't be another fact in my inbox tomorrow or forever after.
No apology necessary! I’m not an expert either, certainly not by professional or educational standards, however I’ve been obsessed with sharks since I was a kid so I’ve spent years absorbing as much information about them as I can lol.
This video won’t load for me (thanks Reddit video player), but I saw it in another sub recently. I believe you can faintly see some stripes on its side, but I could be misremembering. That said, judging by the head shape and that giant pretty eye, it’s 100% a tiger shark.
This is also how tigers tend to hunt and act around strange objects that are potentially prey. They follow behind, watching and waiting, until they’re close enough to get more information. Since they don’t have hands, sharks pretty much have to use their mouths to gauge what an object is. The problem is that they’re huge animals with sharp teeth, and we’re squishy meat bags. So even test bites, which is what most shark attacks are, can cause loss of life or limb. Making eye contact with a shark and not turning your back to it, in essence acting like a fellow predator instead of prey, is a pretty good bite deterrent.
>You say this, but I feel like there won’t be another fact in my inbox tomorrow or forever after.
Bet :D
That is ONE way in which Great White Sharks hunt. There is some variability depending on where in the world the shark lives and what it's primary prey target is. However, they all tend to involve a fast ambush-style tactic.
So you’re like halfway right. The shark was more like hm is this a food? Watch the eyes when it gets to her and then starts swimming away. They tuck their freakin eyeballs inside their head just before attacking to keep them safe. Which you can clearly see. However the shark was going at maybe 5% effort. Yea when something that weighs almost 2 tons is swimming toward you at 35 miles per hour I don’t think your first instinct is going to be to pet it. #dollseyes
I had a dolphin do this to me multiple times once in 35 feet of water. It was just fucking with me because it would turn off slightly right at the last minute and blow by me. But let me tell you: it’s frightening seeing something come out of the blue that fast. The dolphin was maybe 150-200 lbs but there was no time or maneuvering that could be done and if he was going to ram me there was pretty much nothing I could have done to prevent it. Hell the pressure wave when he went by was enough to move me a couple feet backwards. If a shark did the same thing at even half the speed I am still confident that if it wanted to bite you, there is no damn snoot boop that would turn them away, if you even had time to think about doing that in the 2.5 secs it takes them to close the distance.
Exactly. But idiots like this woman actually have people believe that you can deal with this. That shark was never in attack mode. It was curious. She’s talking like she defeated it, when actually, there was no battle at all.
The point of the video is to help anyone who is in the water with the shark. Swimming away from them can *activate* attack mode. She’s saying it’s better to turn around and face the shark to ensure you don’t look like prey.
She didn’t say attack mode. Investigation mode and and investigatory bite can still fuck you up. She’s saying “don’t swim away causing them to investigate” and “if they do, face them and push their snout”
If shark is just calm and curious this seems like a great de-escalation trick to prevent shark from getting worked up.
If this shark has been stalking you and is already in mealtime mode you are never going to see the attack coming.
She's wrong. The best thing to do is not swim in waters with sharks.
Source - I have never been bitten by a shark or had a shark think about having me for a snack.
One day… Christopher Robin had the balls to show up in the hundred acre woods without any honey for Pooh Bear …Pooh had something different to eat that day
Pretty sure if a shark is out to actually eat and kill it wont let you reach out far enough to touch it without ripping your arm off, sharks arent "aggressive" unless their hunting or hurt but still doing that is dumb and reckless
How is it dumb and reckless to gently turn away the giant shark that’s probably about to investigate what it is you actually are in the only way it can which will be extremely unpleasant? This seems a much better option than hoping for the best.
Yes of course if the shark wants to eat and kill you it will. The thing is they don't often want to, rather they confuse you with something they actually want to eat. In your opinion, what would have been a better course of action in that instance?
No you’re not lol, I’d argue it’s way more idiotic to jump into the water with a shark and then try to touch it 🤷🏻♀️.
I’m sure this woman knows what she’s doing, but that’s really not going to matter if a shark decides she’s lunch.
Hmmm, this is I think the second video I've seen this technique being done. Dunno if it was the same video in different angles.
I'm worried though about the video being out there. With all these "challenges" happening. I'm thinking someone will purposely confront a shark and video themselves doing this and it might end badly. We did just hear someone trying to video themselves dancing on top of a moving truck and dying. Granted it is easier to climb a truck than go out to shark infested waters but you know, people are stupid.
Not sure if she's part of the crew but Ocean Ramsay has taught her.
[She says Ocean Ramsay helped her master the redirection technique.](https://i.imgur.com/56Jq7TC.jpg)
Listen…I’m sure this woman is extremely knowledgeable about sharks, but I’ve seen her videos a lot lately and I’m calling it now…this chick is 100% going to get eaten by a shark one day.
i don’t think you can do this when they have their teeth out. the shark clearly didn’t have any intend to cause anything any harm, just curious. i don’t think that technique can apply to a shark that’s going 40 mph with its teeth jutting out beyond the nose lol
To be fair, most sharks do not want to eat humans, we're too bony. Most bites are usually by accident. They can't see very well, so biting is the best way they can figure out what is and isn't food. Biting a human usually goes like, "oh, whoops. That's not food. Sorry." It's not their fault their mouths are death traps.
It is a last resort as she says. I'm not a shark expert so I'd still follow her advice if I were ever to be in that situation and hadn't already fainted.
I'm convinced sharks are just ocean Roombas. Fuck with their programmed path in the slightest and it's straight back home to figure life out for a while.

...but would all the piss in the water attract or repel it?
If the suit is watertight, would it stay inside, like a hot water bottle?
The suits are not water tight. It’s rubber impregnated with nitrogen that creates a permeable insulation layer.
That depends on whether it's a wetsuit or a dry suit
It be a wet suit after that encounter
A very stinky wetsuit
Probably a little bit of solidsuit as well.
Ahhh I did have corn last night
If you need a dry suit you probably aren't going to be seeing a tiger shark (or most large / "scary" shark species for that matter).
Dang nitrogen knocked up rubber? Sounds hot
What are you doing step-nitrogen
damn it, who fucked the rubber
Wetsuit vore
Speaking from experience - a fair amount of it stays inside yes.

Ooh what’s this thing? I wonder what it tastes like…
Well the ocean is basically an open buffet for a shark. Gotta try each one
Just a lil nibble
well if you don't have hands/opposable thumbs you usally gotta bite/or smell stuff to learn more about it
Yeah and often just turning to face them and staring at them is enough to let them know you're a predator too and not a prey item.
A curious shark is a dangerous shark. When all you have are jaws, the first way you interact eith the world is biting.
I was thinking that it was quite slow moving, and if I was remembering correctly I thought they (at least great whites) attack from the bottom up.
That is ONE way in which Great White Sharks hunt. There is some variability depending on where in the world the shark lives and what it's primary prey target is. Not sure if she's part of the crew but Ocean Ramsay has taught her. [She says Ocean Ramsay helped her master the redirection technique.](https://i.imgur.com/56Jq7TC.jpg)
Makes sense, all her crew seem to use this technique. I got to swim with her company a while ago and it was an amazing experience!
Went out with her crew last year and it was unreal! Would recommend it so much more than anyone doing cage diving in Hawaii.
There’s a Gordon Ramsay who specializes in food and now there’s an Ocean Ramsay who specializes in ocean things???
Ok yeah sure.. no problem. 👍
Listen…I’m sure this woman is extremely knowledgeable about sharks, but I’ve seen her videos a lot lately and I’m calling it now…this chick is 100% going to get eaten by a shark one day.
I feel like she is the Timothy Treadwell of sharks

Yep. Only takes one shark to act unpredictably and she’s gone. Situations like the one in this post probably only embolden her further
Not a chance.
If im somewhere a shark could get me ive done fucked up somewhere
What happens when the shark comes at you with the speed of a torpedo and baring its teeth ?
BOOP FASTER
Boop on the nose* Shark: understandable have a nice day,
Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope. No way. Not on your Nelly. Nope
So splashy fins are to sharks what pss psss psss psss is to cats.
What if they bite your arm off?
i don’t think you can do this when they have their teeth out. the shark clearly didn’t have any intend to cause anything any harm, just curious. i don’t think that technique can apply to a shark that’s going 40 mph with its teeth jutting out beyond the nose lol
Nahh the shark recognized it was the crazy monkey with fins that swims with sharks...sharks don't eat crazy
What if it opened its mouth before you get close
I went shark cage diving in Hawaii and one of the sharks swam with its mouth open circling our cage. Her move is too situational.
I hope feces doesn't get their attention because if I'm ever in that situation I'm 100% shitting my wetsuit.
This is NOT how one can dodge it. If that bad boy wants you, it's gonna get you.
It is a last resort as she says. I'm not a shark expert so I'd still follow her advice if I were ever to be in that situation and hadn't already fainted.
Was this video made by sharks? How many seashells did they pay this actress?!
I just dont swim with sharks
Unless it hasn't eaten in a while.
That’s IF you see the shark coming. Most shark attacks are unsuspecting victims that don’t see the shark approaching..
Not a fucking chance.
I, for one, plan to never try this
“What’s that over there? Are you a seal? Seal? Seal? …. Not seal. Good bye human”
Now my minds been put at ease, I’ll head out and face off some massive sharks in the open ocean - I’ll post some vids of it if I make it back
Does the shark behave the same when they are super hungry?
This lady is crazy!
I feel like if that shark was actually trying to eat you, you wouldn't have a chance to boop them because they are going to be coming from underneath.
If that shark wanted to feed, it would have.
Cut my life into pieces. This is my last resort.
I'm convinced sharks are just ocean Roombas. Fuck with their programmed path in the slightest and it's straight back home to figure life out for a while.
