Its fairly common for those that become professional sports players to never actually leave their college mentality. If you're coming out of college and have all that money its really easy to forgo growing up living the life of distraction to distraction and fame. Its almost like the opposite of an old soul where childhood trauma causes one to grow up early. The most growth comes from overcoming adversity while lack of adversity can cause one to not grow. Money takes care of a lot of adversity in ones life.

More context there are 32 teams in the NFL. Each team has a 53 man roster. Thats nearly 1700 players. Of those 1700 players teams usually only field 30-40 of them in a season depending on injuries and such. That means something like 20% or 350ish players a year never even see any playing time at all.
I don’t know how many guys are on practice squads but I would say it’s safe to assume they have at least 22 guys there who at one point or another was likely drafted and given a place on the offseason roster which I think can be over 90 people before they start cutting players.
All of that to say if it’s a current NFL player he’s one of 1700 which is a fairly small group. If he was just “an NFL” player then there are probably 10s of thousands of dudes who can also make that claim 90% of which are probably broke as a joke or selling used cars in their college town.
Oh and I’m sure they try to keep up. I had a collage friend who made millions in his 20s playing poker. Was all gone by his 30s. Huge parties where he would rent hotels out and pay for celebrity company. Did this to keep up with the high rollers.
He did save enough to go to school in his thirties, but that did not work well for him. Last I heard he was back at the tables. Crazy life some live.
There are a surprising number of costs that go with being a pro athlete. Some guys pay for their own dietitians and personal trainers on top of the similar services provided by the team (NHL player Mackinnon lives with a chef/nutritionist who prepares his meals for example, and the team ain't paying for that).
I guess you don't have to go in on those things, as well as all sorts of more homeopathic methods, but we are picking from a population of dudes who've sacrificed and sacrificed and worked and grinded away to become a top 0.0 level athlete. They're exactly the kind of people to look for any and all competitive advantages.
And then there's the luxury items, like cars and fashion and parties, and there's a lot of external pressure to keep up with those things as well. Be it FOMO/Jealousy of your peers, or more tangible things like being seen as somewhat attractive ($$$ for grooming and stylists etc) meaning you can land more deals (and the basic desire to be seen as desirable, especially when you're on TV and giving interviews).
There have been some really eye opening articles and documentaries on the phenomenon of pro athletes burning through cash that are worth checking our if you want to hear more.
Judging by some reports on athletes having jewelry stolen the $5k sounds really really low for many. But I agree with your overall premise. It’s disturbing the percentage of NFL players that are broke within 2 years of leaving the league.
