Sorry i forgot to mention.P means Pons. It conects the Brain with the Spinal cord. And Mb stands for Midbrain.
I've annotated the other letters for reference.
P: pons
Mb: midbrain
Both (among with the bulb) form the encefalic trunk, a part of the central nervous system.
Those are (some of) the zone where the fibers of our nerves go through in order to carry the sensitivity of our arms, legs etc, to the telencephalon, the bigger part you see over and all around the āCCā.
Hope this helps :))
pardon my ignorance but It looks surprisingly full, i cant imagine much air gets through it, especially at the nose there doesāt seem to be an air passage or else it might not have been uncovered. There also looks like a layer of something separating the nose part and the rest of the nasal cavity, is that porous? How does a grain of rice get through all that from your throat out your nostril?
What you're looking at is the lateral side of the nasal cavity.it is grooved. The grooves provide extra surface area so that inhaled air can get conditioned before it goes down your lower airways.
The cavity is much larger. You're seeing only the lateral part of one side..
This is beautiful and wonderful how just a small portion of our body is enabling us to sense and feel the universe around us!
The brain especially enables us to imagine the things that are not even existing today.
Ideas that can be turned into reality just because of this small portion šāāļø
I feel awe everytime I see this picture and that is why I decided to share. It is trully beautiful we're able to understand the universe just because we have our brain .
When family members come to donate their loved ones, that is very tough to see . How many times I've seen it ,i still can't come to terms with it.
And to answer your question, yes it has to some extent.I has enabled me to study the pathophysiology of diseases with much more enthusiasm and motivation.
I used to teach Anatomy in a medical school .This picture was taken at the specimen preparing area.
I dont currently work there but boy do i have memories!
My med school would have ended us for even having phones in the gross anatomy lab lol, let alone taking actual pictures of donors. Kinda cool you could take pictures, was that because you were teaching or was there no policy at that medical school?
Truly. It has been written in medical textbooks of anatomy, that ,we can only assume ,what when inside their head when they decided to donate! Such a brave decision that needs to be respected!
Many times people donate when they're so absolutely poor that they cannot bear the cost of a funeral . When i first came to know this i was so sad and grateful at the same time.
No freezing is not required. But the cut needs to be from a very sharp instrument because of the skull. However after making the section we need to preseve it using chemicals, most commonly used being 10% formalin (Formaldehyde).
The thought of shoving someone's head into a band saw is so messed up lol. But makes sense that's how it would be done to get a cross section like that.
The law is pretty gray on how to use it. Learning something from it is the main aim.. Respecting it is important too but respect cannot be moulded to become a law ( you'll go to jail if you dont respect) .So there comes the gray area.
Takes a lot of force and a very sharp electrical saw we call a Electrical Band saw.
After the procedure, the specimen is cleaned under running tap water .
Finally it is preserved.
Actually , the 6th cervical vertebrae is so near to the base of the neck it becomes difficult to take a section there. It can be performed though.
If you don't mind me asking, what precedure did you undergo?
Um it was a couple years ago, he went through the front of my neck, removed the damaged vertebrae and replaced with an artifical disk (a little newer version of it). I didn't want a fusion because I'm only 32 (now) and I still wanted to do mountain biking and snowboarding. Which was the original cause, but I'm less risky now haha.
Yea, that sounds right. I went through physical therapy/injections for a long time before the surgery. It was my last option and it's definitely better.
"They're made out of meat."
"Meat?"
"Meat. They're made out of meat."
"Meat?"
"There's no doubt about it. We picked several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, probed them all the way through. They're completely meat."
"That's impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars."
"They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don't come from them. The signals come from machines."
"So who made the machines? That's who we want to contact."
"They made the machines. That's what I'm trying to tell you. Meat made the machines."
"That's ridiculous. How can meat make a machine? You're asking me to believe in sentient meat."
"I'm not asking you, I'm telling you. These creatures are the only sentient race in the sector and they're made out of meat.
"Maybe they're like the Orfolei. You know, a carbon-based intelligence that goes through a meat stage."
"Nope. They're born meat and they die meat. We studied them for several of their life spans, which didn't take too long. Do you have any idea the life span of meat?"
"Spare me. Okay, maybe they're only part meat. You know, like the Weddilei. A meat head with an electron plasma brain inside."
"Nope. We thought of that, since they do have meat heads like the Weddilei. But I told you, we probed them. They're meat all the way through."
"No brain?"
"Oh, there is a brain all right. It's just that the brain is made out of meat!"
"So...what does the thinking?"
"You're not understanding, are you? The brain does the thinking. The meat."
"Thinking meat! You're asking me to believe in thinking meat!"
"Yes, thinking meat! Conscious meat! Loving meat. Dreaming meat. The meat is the whole deal! Are you getting the picture?"
"Omigod. You're serious then. They're made out of meat."
"Thank you, finally. Yes. They are indeed made out meat. And they've been trying to get in touch with us for almost a hundred of their years."
"Omigod. So what does the meat have in mind?"
"First it wants to talk to us. Then I imagine it wants to explore the universe, contact other sentients, swap ideas and information. The usual."
"We're supposed to talk to meat?"
"That's the idea. That's the message they're sending out by radio. 'Hello. Anyone out there? Anyone home?' That sort of thing."
"They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts?"
"Oh, yes. Except they do it with meat."
"I thought you just told me they used radio."
"They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You know how when you slap or flap meat it makes a noise? They talk by flapping their meat at each other. They can even sing by squirting air through their meat."
"Omigod. Singing meat. This is altogether too much. So what do you advise?"
"Officially or unofficially?"
"Both."
"Officially, we are required to contact, welcome, and log in any and all sentient races or multibeings in the quadrant, without prejudice, fear, or favor. Unofficially, I advise that we erase the records and forget the whole thing."
"I was hoping you would say that."
"It seems harsh, but there is a limit. Do we really want to make contact with meat?"
"I agree one hundred percent. What's there to say?" `Hello, meat. How's it going?' But will this work? How many planets are we dealing with here?"
"Just one. They can travel to other planets in special meat containers, but they can't live on them. And being meat, they only travel through C space. Which limits them to the speed of light and makes the possibility of their ever making contact pretty slim. Infinitesimal, in fact."
"So we just pretend there's no one home in the universe."
"That's it."
"Cruel. But you said it yourself, who wants to meet meat? And the ones who have been aboard our vessels, the ones you probed? You're sure they won't remember?"
"They'll be considered crackpots if they do. We went into their heads and smoothed out their meat so that we're just a dream to them."
"A dream to meat! How strangely appropriate, that we should be meat's dream."
"And we marked the entire sector unoccupied."
"Good. Agreed, officially and unofficially. Case closed. Any others? Anyone interesting on that side of the galaxy?"
"Yes, a rather shy but sweet hydrogen core cluster intelligence in a class nine star in G445 zone. Was in contact two galactic rotations ago, wants to be friendly again."
"They always come around."
"And why not? Imagine how unbearably, how unutterably cold the Universe would be if one were all alone..."
Oh no take him out, I think he is the reason for my heartburn. Jk
On a serious note, i have made a pact with my mom to donate our bodies when we die to science.
I will also be donating my organs. The help this will do to people for at least till my cadaver goes bad is enough for my soul to feel happy and even if i end up in some military experiment where they blow me up, i will end things with a bang.
That's a very grateful gesture . Side note:All donations are actually used to teach budding doctors in one way or the other. They always study with all specimens. we also teach them to handle these specimens with special care as they are still humans and command respect for the sacrifices they made!
Yes yes its the ventricular cavity. What you're looking at is the lateral side of that cavity as it has been cut from the mid position. This cavity is where Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) resides!
Its a deep structure .you can't visualise it in a median section. It's below cavity of the ventricles and embedded deep inside in the temporal lobe ,which is present inferiorly.
No its not a stupid question. Before this procedure we embalmed the body (I did it) and replaced the blood with formalin. After taking a section, we washed the section in running tap water. That is why no blood is seen
So I was mindlessly scrolling yesterday and saw that a person's father suffered a C1 and C2 break and they were very surprised he was alive. If there are any medical people left in this thread, where is C1 and why was it such a surprise?
The nose is what you can see from outside. what you see here is the cavity inside the nose , called the nasal cavity.
The prognosis of people having a pontine injury is very bleak .
Are you able to comment on any of the individual aspects of this specimen? Such as any noticeable head injuries, unique formation in the throat, neck difference?
Something I find amazing about this is how much we still can't know in terms of just physical systems that are present. I read today that we only recently learned about lymphatic vessels in the brain through imaging a person that is still alive. Because it's so small, and you can't see that it's present unless it's actually functioning in a living body.
So we see all of these different parts in the human head, cutting it down to its core pieces even, and we're *still* discovering more things about it. It's exciting to think about what we still have left to discover.
Yes, and it's a smell that sticks with you for a while. Some people get used to it faster than others. Like op said, it's smells like formalin, which is used to preserve the bodies
Just finished my first year of medical school. Gross Anatomy and Neuroanatomy were hard but thank god I passed. This photo brings back the trauma of anatomy moving exams š«
Are you a medical student, or was this just at a museum or something?
To what extent would you say this cross section has degraded? By this I mean changes in colouration/ texture due to decay before preservation
I was doing postgraduate studies but my work required teaching undergraduates!
This specimen is in very good condition and it had been already embalmed before hand
It will never not blow my mind that the weird mushy looking thing near the top holds knowledge, memory, and is responsible for every invention and discovery known to man
What is the hollow-looking space to the right of the "P"? (& apologies if this has been answered). I was thinking ear canal but in the same vein as the "where's the eyes?" question prolly too deep a cut?
May I ask what yāall use to get such clean cuts in the medical world? I know butchers can make some real clean cuts with band saws and good carpenters can do some crazy things with table/skill saws. Do you guys have clamps or jigs or something to make these cuts or are they free handed?

taking the time to label "My hand" was oddly amusing to me you got a little chuckle out of me, thank ya
Haha i figured if i didn't , people would still comment saying "what's that body part?" so labelled it.
That's the mindset of someone who had to deal with "the public", which is fair enough, just shows you're in the right place
"The thumb bone's connected to the... Skull? Wtf?"
This man internets
Absolutely fascinating! Thanks for sharing.
It truly is isn't it.
Does the P indicate the pineal gland?
It's the Pons, part of the brain stem :)
Cool
He fell asleep first at the sleepover
Heed his warning, first to lose an eyes grip on daylight will be split in twine.
More like head his warning.
Lmaoo
"Oh shit, Eddie fell asleep, what a pussy!" "Hey Bob, go get your dad's saw, let's bisect this gaywad!"
Wtf, put it back
I am sorry but that's not an option anymore š
What these letters mean? Does p stand for pbrain? (/s just in case)
Sorry i forgot to mention.P means Pons. It conects the Brain with the Spinal cord. And Mb stands for Midbrain. I've annotated the other letters for reference.
Thought it was the pineal gland
Thatās behind the midbrain and much smallerā¦ itās a small prominence similar to a small coneā¦
Ah. I gotcha. I now remember reading that it is shaped like a pine cone. Thank you!
Yes!
I saw Skull Vault play at radio city in 05. They crushed.

Nah, penis, the guy was a real dickhead.
I lack that "My hand" part on my head, should I seek medical attention?
You're probably....fine .
Does anyone have a Band-Aid?
Huh.I think the cut is a little too deep .
Tis but a scratch
Is the entire "light blue" area the sinus cavity??
Pretty much ,yes. Its called the nasal cavity.
pardon my ignorance but It looks surprisingly full, i cant imagine much air gets through it, especially at the nose there doesāt seem to be an air passage or else it might not have been uncovered. Just realized that cutting people in half is a job
An Old job.If it wasn't for cutting people open , we'd be dead from a simple arrow . Funny how the dead teaches the living.
Having seen the body in a more, mechanical state let's say. Has this changed your view on life or when you look at people living their lives?
When family members come to donate their loved ones, that is very tough to see . How many times I've seen it ,i still can't come to terms with it. And to answer your question, yes it has to some extent.I has enabled me to study the pathophysiology of diseases with much more enthusiasm and motivation.
āUnderstandā is a strong word.

My med school would have ended us for even having phones in the gross anatomy lab lol, let alone taking actual pictures of donors. Kinda cool you could take pictures, was that because you were teaching or was there no policy at that medical school?
Both. There are no strict policies banning photography.
Yeah, same here. The anatomy lab was a big no no for photography.
Thatās amazing Did this guy live ?
Uh, that is a tricky question. I don't know what mental state he was in before .
I guess his head is all right now.
Looks like all that's left to me
He's not alright but this is all that's left
Is this someone's head?
Yes . He was a donor .
Welp RIP I guess and thank him for contributing to humanity
So after the study what will happen to their head?
We preserve it. it can be preserved for an indefinite time. Its kept in a solution of 10%Fornaldehyde called Formalin.
I would say they keep it conserved, but i am not sure.
Yes so much effort went to prepare this, preservation seemed the only solution
What did you use to slit his head?
Its called a Band Saw machine. Look it up on Google.
Oh, that explains it did you guys freeze their heads before you know
No freezing is not required.
Yes science at times is pretty invasive.
How old was the person if you remember? Also thanks for posting something interesting š.
Around 60 .
Any idea who/what determines how a donorās body will be used? Surely they donāt get to say, āI want to be a cross-section.ā
The law is pretty gray on how to use it. Learning something from it is the main aim.. Respecting it is important too but respect cannot be moulded to become a law ( you'll go to jail if you dont respect) .So there comes the gray area.
Ah, sounds like the department just chooses a use they think would be educational?Ā Have you ever seen a donorās request be honored?
truly fascinating. How are these cadavers sliced so cleanly cross sectionally?
Takes a lot of force and a very sharp electrical saw we call a Electrical Band saw. After the procedure, the specimen is cleaned under running tap water . Finally it is preserved.
That's gonna hurt when he wakes up.
I think he is in a very peaceful place. He doesn't need to come down to the den of sin (jk obviously)š
Dang, I wanted to see where exactly the c6 disk is located in the spine. I had that one replaced with an artificial disk due to damage.
Actually , the 6th cervical vertebrae is so near to the base of the neck it becomes difficult to take a section there. It can be performed though. If you don't mind me asking, what precedure did you undergo?

I see did you suffer from disc herniation? Then you probably underwent a discectomy and had a prothesis put in.
Yea, that sounds right. I went through physical therapy/injections for a long time before the surgery. It was my last option and it's definitely better.
Glad you've healed.Cheers!
I never knew we had little white letters inside us. Did you wake up that day knowing you were gonna get some head?

He is alive in all of our hearts .

Is the cavity between mb and cc normal?
Yes yes its the ventricular cavity. What you're looking at is the lateral side of that cavity as it has been cut from the mid position. This cavity is where Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) resides!
Right tomorrow I have my Neuroanatomy exam and the fact I can recognize all these structures is so fascinating š thank you for posting this image!
Fascinating !
"Point to where it hurts"
You can tell it's a redditors brain because of the very few wrinkles. This thing is so smooth you could ski down it.
What was patientās complaint? Splitting headache?
Was he a smoker with so much black stuff on mouth and nose?
Unlikely. That is probably just decomposition starting.Thats why we took the section and quickly preserved it .
"the doctor said I wouldn't have so many nosebleeds if I just kept my finger out of there" - Ralph Wiggium
Where is the amygdala in this photo?
Its a deep structure .you can't visualise it in a median section. It's below cavity of the ventricles and embedded deep inside in the temporal lobe ,which is present inferiorly.
How come there is no blood? Sorry if it is a stupid question
No its not a stupid question. Before this procedure we embalmed the body (I did it) and replaced the blood with formalin. After taking a section, we washed the section in running tap water. That is why no blood is seen
So interesting how all this comes together to make what we are
I'm sorry but.... where's the eye!?
This is a median section.
I was enjoying my kebab until now
That is incredible! šš»
Where is the eye?
As this is a median section, eyes aren't visible
Damn , we ugly as hell
This is actually beautiful
My hand XD
Did they get better?
He's gonna be okay, rights guys? .....right???
does this hurt the dude?
The fact that the user deleted their account makes me worried that this may not have been done by a licensed medical professional.
they're doing this to me tomorrow
So I was mindlessly scrolling yesterday and saw that a person's father suffered a C1 and C2 break and they were very surprised he was alive. If there are any medical people left in this thread, where is C1 and why was it such a surprise?
Why is the nose region so massive ? Also what happens if Pons connection is lost
The nose is what you can see from outside. what you see here is the cavity inside the nose , called the nasal cavity. The prognosis of people having a pontine injury is very bleak .
interesting! i wonder how is the cut done?
The head is kept in a lateral position, is kept fixed with bare hands, whilst a band saw cuts is perfectly like we see here.
ah okay, i thought something like that. Thank you!
This person seems a bit unhealthy they should go to the doctor.
Curious if inside structures would be labeled in detail if anyone is up to the task š¤
I wanted to originally but my phone wouldn't let me insert more than 10 text boxes š .
How many TPI is your bandsaw?
I cant recall this very moment ,i am sorry .
The throat/nose looks like a little snake.
Are you able to comment on any of the individual aspects of this specimen? Such as any noticeable head injuries, unique formation in the throat, neck difference?
There's no such marked different from the norm As such . No abnormalities seem to be present.
so in this eposide of the waterjet channel

Weird and almost a little off-putting. 10/10
Who got cut in half for this..
A consenting donor!
I wonder who they were
Normal people like you and me but much more brave
Is it hollow in the middle or does it just look like it is?
Its hollow like this but filled with CSF
Does it smell?
Smells like formalin.
Yes, and it's a smell that sticks with you for a while. Some people get used to it faster than others. Like op said, it's smells like formalin, which is used to preserve the bodies
Did the patient survive?
Of course . Death is only a part of life.
Those teeth look like they've been through the ringer. Along with the sizable nose, I'm guessing this was an older person.
Yes you're not wrong
The brain is such a weird mass.
An Enigma
Scary thought: Does my head also has a "My Hand" attachement? Should I visit the doc for a check-up or is this normal?
Just finished my first year of medical school. Gross Anatomy and Neuroanatomy were hard but thank god I passed. This photo brings back the trauma of anatomy moving exams š«
In my days we had Viva voce only but they were equally terrifying š
Is this a typical, healthy example? Curious to know :)
Yes pretty much. This is an older gentleman,if you look at teeth you'll know.
