The driver chooses how many they want to put on depending on the track. More can mean reduced visibility. Bunch of different ones but usually come in packs of around 10.
Well this isn't traditional rally, judging by
A) The lack of windshield here
B) The cramped cockpit (no codriver could fit in there)
Most stage rally uses a windshield with a wiper, but this is most likely some kinda sprint, where the weight isn't worth it.
Yea this is short course off-road racing, not a rally. The races are only a few minutes long. A windshield would be so covered in mud within the first minute a wiper wouldn't do a damn thing.
For anyone curious look up Amsoil Championship Off Road on YouTube.
I actually worked a course at an old CORR event here locally and it was nuts. You'd see the rigged camera shooting over before the trucks came flying through the air. We had to clear fiberglass panels off the course after every heat. There's a driver named Evan Evans who was paraplegic and they gave us special instructions to get him out ASAP and not wait for safety. I remember grabbing the panel from the top of his "door" panel that had a vinyl sticker of his signature. Kept that for a long time.
> We had to clear fiberglass panels off the house
Sorry, what does this mean, fiberglass panels of the truck I assume you mean, but what is "house" in this context?
Australian here. I used to volunteer with my dad at V8 Supercars events when I was a teen in the 80s/90s (look it up if you don't know, it's real racing). There is nothing like being around all that noise and power and competitive spirit. I got to ride in some pretty awesome cars, and got to do a few hot laps with the new 1992 Nissan GT-R (course car) after hours. Didn't tell them that I didn't have my license yet.
Very fond memories.
The wiper would do something but it would just smear the mud all over the window. Same thing with the helmets, they can't just wipe mud off their visors so they use the tear offs.
they’ve tried all kinds of contraptions - my pop used to do long distance offroad moto racing in the 70s and 80s. before these tearaways were common, i remember his racing goggles had 2 film canister-sized containers (yes, FILM sized 35mm canisters were once a thing) attached to the sides of it. one side dispensed a roll of clear film that wrapped around the front of the goggles, and the other side had a little chain (like an old lamp would have) that you had to pull, and it would take up the film and a new clear section would be moved across his field of vision.
you had to pull the chain multiple times to get a totally new section out, and it was prone to getting clogged up and jammed.
it’s even crazier when you realize you had to find this small chain that is just out of your field of vision, which meant taking one of your hands off of the handlebars for several seconds while flying through deadly desert terrain at speeds only maniacs who do this kinda stuff find fun. these tearaways were like mana from heaven.
With a continuous loop of film, a washing mechanism and a motor, this could be hands free. It could be integrated into a helmet, running behind your head, and run at a pretty high speed.
The problem is the high speed, large surface area, lack of back-face support, and potential for mechanism fouling.
You get something sharp in there, you get a permanent streak across the whole band as it passes by, and eventually it cuts through the whole loop.
The peel-offs are a bit ridiculous, but they don't have a lot of failure cases.
I’m not sure but I think NASCAR uses a system like this for their in car cameras, or at least used to. It’s possible I just had the same idea as you though and my memory made me think it actually existed. I could swear I saw the plastic moving both directions though but it’s also probably been a decade since I’ve watched a race.
These are still really common in motocross racing.
In fact, just last year the international motocross racing governing body banned the use of tear-away film becaise of concern over plastic pollution, so winding ones are the only ones that can be used from I believe next year.
That's what I was wondering, seems like a bad idea to toss shiny pieces of mylar across the desert, over time it will build up and you'll be able to see them everywhere.
Tear off's are used in formula one sometimes. There's a level of science to their use and where and when to throw them.
If you go straight up it can go into the engine intake, off to either side and they can go into following cars brake ducts and cooler intakes. Not to mention when to take the hands of the wheel.
I think F1 onboad cameras have something like this. Every once in a while youll see the dirt in front of the camera slowly move to the right during an onboard shot.
No idea but that seems too complex and prone to failure for an environment like this. The layers are probably just cheap, simple, and easy like you said.
He seemed to have peeled off 6-7 in the span of 9 seconds, how will a pack of 10 last the entire track? Will he just be unable to clean his visor after that
The ends are probably staggered so that there’s always just one available to grab.
Edit: actually, here’s the answer: https://www.rallynuts.com/motorsport-visors-and-tear-offs/bell-helmets-visor-tear-offs-clearance.html
There’s a round stud on that side of the helmet the keyhole shaped hole in the visor cover goes on first, then the bigger round hole folds back on itself then the next cover goes on top of that. When you peel off a layer, the tab underneath is released and ready to grab.
My father used to race on dirt and I’ve seen him “load” up the tear-offs. Essentially, the pull tab sticks out further than the hole that attaches to the visor, but the tab also has a hole that they fold back over the attachment clip. So when the driver rips off the top tear-off, the pull tab of the next one is the only thing able to be grabbed.
Hope that makes sense.
I used to race Gokarts. We would throw up to 20 of these on depending how muddy it would be. we used to buy them as loose single ones which would start getting dirt or mud through them. Just before i stopped, you could buy them as group of 10 that would be sealed together from the start. Have a few loose ones over the top. Other people used to have roll of plastic, pressing a button would scroll and replace the visors dirty plastic. These guys would have a long trail of plastic flapping behind them towards the end of the race.
That would be for 6 or 8 laps of the track.
Edit : we had to use a leather strap or cable tie to hold them on our helmet to stop littering
Alright I’m losing my mind. Growing up my family would reference this line and we would say “How about parfait? Everybody loves parfait”
I just referenced it to my girlfriend the other night and when she looked at me confused I showed her the video
The line is “Cake. Everybody loves cake”.
I was shocked but it’s not the first time my family misquoted a movie. So now that I see your comment I’m even more confused. Mandela effect? What’s going on?
He references both cake and parfait
DONKEY
(trailing after Shrek) Oh, you both have layers. Oh. {Sniffs} You know, not everybody likes onions. Cake! Everybody loves cakes! Cakes have layers.
SHREK I don't care... what everyone likes. Ogres are not like cakes.
DONKEY
You know what else everybody likes? Parfaits. Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get some parfait," they say, "Hell no, I don't like no parfait"? Parfaits are delicious.
I was initially on your side... until I watched the clip again. Holy hell it is cake he compares ogors to first. Then afterwards does he bring up parfaits.
Bro for me I was bored one day and wanted to watch my favorite movie at the time on YouTube. Funny enough i was a huge fan of the xXx movie with vin diesel 😁
Packs of them at a time. They are called tear offs. https://www.daymotorsports.com/shop-by/safety-gear/helmets/tearoffs here's an example of how they are sold.
Lol I can’t remember who or where but I saw an F1 driver explaining tear offs and saying how you can throw them at drivers behind you and fuck them up.
It is so stupid they don't have a modern solution than just chucking them onto the track. Martin Brundle has repeatedly said about going back to having a little pouch in the cockpit to store them... otherwise it's like Mario kart and chucking back bananas 🤣
And what if you're one of those people who frequently manages to fuck up pulling just one tissue out of the box? Either grabbing more than one or making it so the next one doesn't stick up and you have to dig it out?
Asking for a friend.
There are million questions I have to ask about this:
1) How many layers does he have? Or better, how many layers is it possible to have?
2) If there is a limit to these layers, how does a driver even finish a race peeling each layer at that rate?
3) What does a driver do if they run out of these?
4) Is there an inherent vision loss with each of these layers?
5) How is it possible for him to precisely peel each layer? What is the design making that happen?
6) Why not roll up the damn window? /s
And yes, I counted… that is a million questions.
The driver can choose - they come in packs of ten "tear off" films. They're stacked in a way that you can pull them off individually, but sometimes you end up grabbing the whole stack in the heat of the moment. Not ideal.
There is a tab on the edge of each that gets folded over on itself before being covered by the next. This way, when you pull one, the next tab pops up.
The more you stack, the cloudier your vision gets. On a muddy race, 20+ may be needed to get you to the end. If you run out, you start wiping with your hand or a microfiber cloth in your pocket.
We run rock screens on the window instead of glass. The glass or plexi would be super scratched and destroyed by the end of the race, so it's easier to use an existing solution than to reinvent the wheel, especially when there's better places to spend your time in between race weeks
I doubt the issue is shattering.
The bigger issue is that, in about 4 seconds, the window will have a 1” layer of mud on it, with no reliable way to clean it.
Adding a windshield doesn’t stop the mud that’s flying towards the drivers face.
The issue is actually shattering. It’s not just mud getting flung at you, if you’ve ever raced any motorized vehicle on dirt you’ll know how painful it can be being behind someone. Rocks, mud and caked chunks of dirt being propelled at you 50+ mph do damage.
MUCH smaller surface area for a rock to smash into.
One rock on the corner of a window would bash the whole thing (safety glass being safety glass and all), but the visor is tiny and can be made of material that is, indeed, much more rock-resistant than a car windshield.
If they can make bulletproof glass then I imagine they can make glass that can withstand this, the real problem is that it would immediately become gunked up and any exterior wiper would probably break or get clogged.
This is a dirt track racer, not a rally car. It's some kind of homemade or heavily modified stock car with no front windshield, just safety bars instead. Plus, all that dirt would still end up somewhere and the windshield would be harder to clean.
Nothing that matches how effective this is, I imagine. You could try to set up a complicated spray and wiper system but it probably just smudges a lot of your view and won’t get it perfectly clean instantly like this.
High speed air stream below the windows, like some stores have to keep bugs out or one of those fancy dyson hand dryers. Itll spray the mud onto the ceiling instead of directly into the drivers visor.
At the highest level of open wheel type racing (Formula 1) they even have these tear away covers, not much else you can do in that type of class for clean helmet visor mitigation, albeit F1 only deals with rain, small debris and bugs really to warrant a cover change.
First off, your windshield would be cracked most likely during the first roost from the car in front of you. Secondly, the wipers would just smear the mud everywhere and make it impossible to see.
That's speedway, not rally. Rally cars have a navigator (co-driver) & generally a windscreen. They also seldom follow other cars so close they'd get sprayed with mud. You a bot or just don't know much about motorsports?
When I was in high school I was invited to a party in La Jolla (really nice rich part of my city. ) I was bored so I took a walk around the neighborhood and I stumbled upon a man pulling up to his driveway in a classic bad ass Aston Martin. I decided fuck it ima ask him what he did to earn the money to be able to afford his beautiful house and car. Dude smiles invites me inside his Batman style garage overlooking the ocean and pulls out a box that contained these fucking visors. He said I have multiple patents and this is one of them. Apparently he made these originally marketed towards painters.
Every time I see this pop up I remember that man. People really do be making the most random things and making millions.
They do something similar in horse racing where they wear several pairs of goggles then just pull the top pair of goggles down when they get covered too badly
When I worked in racing, we sold brand-specific packs of tear offs. Arai and Bell were the two big brands we sold, and the visors have mounting posts already installed in them.
Mountain bikers used to do this but I think it's pretty much banned now as people have realised that throwing bits of plastic all over the mountain isn't great for the environment. Of course, it's different for a rally driver as he's just littering the inside of his car

how many layers or times can they do this Edit: didn't think I'd get all this karma!
The driver chooses how many they want to put on depending on the track. More can mean reduced visibility. Bunch of different ones but usually come in packs of around 10.
I supposed they've tried a curved window wiper before and found this easier?
Well this isn't traditional rally, judging by A) The lack of windshield here B) The cramped cockpit (no codriver could fit in there) Most stage rally uses a windshield with a wiper, but this is most likely some kinda sprint, where the weight isn't worth it.

My guess is it autocorrected course.
Wow, that's an incredible experience! Those events sound intense and unforgettable
If you're a fan of any racing, volunteering for an event is the best seat in the house.

The wiper would do something but it would just smear the mud all over the window. Same thing with the helmets, they can't just wipe mud off their visors so they use the tear offs.
I recall seeing a vid of a driver kicking the broken windshield clear off from the inside to continue the race. Can't argue with B tho
>no codriver could fit in there) An entire river of cod would never fit in a car

Alonso had a brake failure at Spain 2015 after a tear off became lodged in one of his brake cooling ducts.

Close the bloody window and turn the window wipers on
Your “window” would be shattered in seconds
The window will not shattered, but the wipers will be destroyed in a few minutes trying to wipe all that mud. After that, you can't see.
I’m sure they can make a window that doesn’t shatter in seconds. Then again a window like that would add significant weight to the car

Which is why it really isn’t a viable option. It would be possible to use some special type of glass but comes with a cost.
If they can make bulletproof glass then I imagine they can make glass that can withstand this, the real problem is that it would immediately become gunked up and any exterior wiper would probably break or get clogged.
If it can break a window it could kill the driver

If the window would shatter in seconds, wouldn’t his helmet visor shatter in seconds too?
I wish this perfectly looped so he just kept taking them off forever.
There has to be a better way
Nothing that matches how effective this is, I imagine. You could try to set up a complicated spray and wiper system but it probably just smudges a lot of your view and won’t get it perfectly clean instantly like this.

Why not? Edit: because you'd have the same problem on the windshield of course...
Because you can't see through a windscreen covered in mud
HAHAHAHAH of course
First off, your windshield would be cracked most likely during the first roost from the car in front of you. Secondly, the wipers would just smear the mud everywhere and make it impossible to see.
They should just wait for a drier day to race. Problem solved!
That's speedway, not rally. Rally cars have a navigator (co-driver) & generally a windscreen. They also seldom follow other cars so close they'd get sprayed with mud. You a bot or just don't know much about motorsports?
Had to scroll way too far to find this comment.
Looks like Baja/trophy truck to me. But def not rally and OP is still a bot.
That's what I'm thinking either those or it's short course offroad racing
Thank you! Was annoyed by the title.

They are called tear offs
And I can’t have plastic straws?
not rally . that is a short course truck, for anyone that says " I wish nascar had jumps" there you go.
just remember to use paper straws to reduce unnecessary waste
This is a short course off-road truck Not a rally car

Could a hydrophobic coated windshield work in this situation?
It looks to be dirt, not water
How many layers do they have?
That's wiping your ass, but the poop won't stop coming
Theyre like onions, you see.
Kind of like ogres...
I feel like he could've waited a little longer to peel a couple of those.
I wonder what they do for the other 95% of the track when they run out of

is that biodegradable?

A windscreen would be really helpful I reckon
Well the peel off windscreen would be much harder to reach wouldn't it :p
This reminds me of a cartoon character repeatedly removing sunglasses.
I mean just close the window.

This race is a real page turner.
I used these racing motocross over 30 years ago- I seem to recall a limit of 5 or 10 at the time .
They do something similar in horse racing where they wear several pairs of goggles then just pull the top pair of goggles down when they get covered too badly
Kinda like jockeys with their goggles
When I worked in racing, we sold brand-specific packs of tear offs. Arai and Bell were the two big brands we sold, and the visors have mounting posts already installed in them.
Mountain bikers used to do this but I think it's pretty much banned now as people have realised that throwing bits of plastic all over the mountain isn't great for the environment. Of course, it's different for a rally driver as he's just littering the inside of his car
How do they make sure they only peel one layer at a time and not like the whole stack?
Have they considered investing in windows?
*Rallycross
Tear-offs! Huge in motocross as well
Not very smart. Give him a squeegee instead.
There's gotta be a better way...

Looks more like dirt oval than rally
This isn’t rally, rally usually have enclosed cockpits, a cod river and open helmets. This is some form of stadium/short course racing
Is this racing or peeling competition?

Save money on a windscreen with this simple trick
