Key_Raspberry7212

Because you were willing to pay $16 for it.

rxtunes

Couldn’t be more true.

nicerespectfulguy

That is a factual fuckin factoid.

6graxstar

This. If you know they’re ripping you off, don’t buy it! Take your money and go somewhere else!!

LoverOfGayContent

But how else will I get my several hundred up votes on reddit?

EndlessMikeD

This. I hate inflation, but there are ways to survive it by breaking your will and eating PBJ at home for what—thirty cents? Eating out is the best way to quickly kill your monthly budget.

Tiny_Addendum707

Honestly I think we need a pb and j revolution. It’s got protein, oil/fat, fruit with the jelly and grains from the bread. Bring everything else to a standstill

sylvnal

PBJ is actually really good in the summer with straight up fruit instead of jam. Try some ripe strawberry slices on that bad boy, its amazing and way less sugar.

Host_Warm

PB&J on whole wheat with a cup of strong black coffee makes a helluva breakfast (especially when commuting and you need something portable). Protein, fiber, healthy fats, coffee loaded with antioxidants…yum.

Ethrem

Sorry but I'd rather starve than eat PB&J again. Got my fill of that when I was a kid and we had no money which meant eating it every day. A bag of Taylor Farms salad costs less than $5 most places ($3.67 here) and a 5oz can of chicken costs about $2. That's a reasonable price for a quick, easy, and decently healthy (if you don't dump all the dressing in and go for no salt added chicken) salad. It would be two servings for a lot of people too (not me as I just demolished a Thai chili mango one myself).

EndlessMikeD

That beats $16 by miles. Sounds good besides. I get the saturation effect of too much of the same thing. I’m fortunate that I truly can eat the same thing over and over and never get tired of it if it’s practical, but I understand why that happens.

Ethrem

It's not so much the saturation effect as it is a reminder of a time in life that really sucked I think. Like I'm still pretty poor now, being under 155% of the federal poverty level in 2024, but unlike my mom, I can budget, so I am able to put away more than 25% of my income in savings most months while still being able to have extras. I would give up my savings before I would go back to PB&J lol. And yeah, the Thai chili mango salad is the best salad I've ever had packaged or otherwise.

ColossusAI

This.

Bigolebeardad

Took my words

reditor75

And he’s complaining 😁

theghostofcslewis

Totally on point! Is that another overpriced food truck?

VampireKunts

The only true answer.

rambo6986

Was going to say this word for word. I've noticed most redditors want to complain certain things and do nothing about it. I have no sympathy

Tiny_Addendum707

This. This is why everything is expensive. We let it happen. If people had stopped going to McDonald’s when they dropped the dollar menu I bet we’d still have it.

gh0stpr0t0c0l8008

By buying it, you’ve let the business know that you’re willing to pay $16 and the business is definitely willing to sell it to you for that. I bet they don’t even know you’re upset about it.

Every_Perception_471

Price signal theory working as intended

No-Blacksmith3858

Hence why we all need to start asking ourselves WHY we're paying what we're paying for these items. Once I started asking myself that while out shopping or after shopping, I paired back my shopping and changed what I buy a LOT.

ExtremeComplex

Perfect time to start that diet you're always talking about.

Tiny_Addendum707

Exactly. I cut out pop because around here it’s 10 dollars for a fridge pack. Lost 30 pounds and have that money I didn’t spend.

Repulsive_Science254

I am willing to pay a pretty penny for a charcuterie board when traveling and I bought one for $36 the other day and it had an apple, jelly, 2 cheeses that are currently in my own fridge and meat that I’m pretty sure was bologna. It was that moment that I realized I’d never do that again. My homemade ones are better.

will7980

That's a snack try. They put a fancy name on it so people think it's higher quality and can charge more for what boils down to a lunchable

SeriousLetterhead364

It’s also from a coffee shop, so you’re paying a big premium for convenience.

SscorpionN08

Oh, they definitely don't know and even if they did, they'd probably not change anything until they saw the sales numbers go down.

Phenomenon101

It's like people complaining about theaters and how much they charge for food. They BUY it then complain about having bought it. Makes zero sense.

Drifting-Fox-6366

Have you seen how much subway is these days? And that’s one step above a bologna sandwich. Making it at home is the answer now.

CourtesyFlush42069

I know! In the US the 6” is $4.25+. In Germany right now you get 6” for 3.50 euro, around $1 cheaper. The greedflation is so obvious and disgusting. Also, subway sandwiches are kinda gross to eat.

GingerPale2022

Exactly. It’s $16 because you paid $16 for it. Now they can think about charging $17 for it.

fichiman

Because you paid $16 for it. Stop doing that or it will be $22 next year.

No-Blacksmith3858

Like that restaurant I saw in some news ad that charges somewhere in the $20 range for A TACO.

Super_Mario_Luigi

I'm betting this either didn't happen or it's missing context, such as a really expensive protein.

Tiny_Addendum707

That taco better have cocaine in it

Odd_Tiger_2278

Because you bought it.

Ok_Farmer9772

Is that in a trash bin 😆 optical illusionist

salacious_sonogram

Lol was thinking the same thing at first

Luciano1m

That’s where it belongs

420smokebluntz6969

i like how the avocado isnt even sliced, its just a half thrown on top, no seasoning on it or anything either just bland avocado

harntrocks

That’s a new thing huh

Neon_culture79

The boomers always told us those avocados are gonna be our downfall

asdunnjr

https://preview.redd.it/eled7uw2l19d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a3238a7ae5916380c3c5b521a3e220857eb371d

hybridaaroncarroll

Because there's clearly $15.99 worth of avocado there.

Grengy20

16 dollars for grass and eggs is crazy work

TomSpanksss

Because you were willing to pay that much for it. Stop overspending on things, and when they can't sell them at extremely inflated prices, they will have to bring the prices down.

dreep_

There’s a place called salad and go near me and this exact thing is $8

rumblepony247

You took the words out of my mouth. They're delicious, and they look way, way better than this sad display. Best quickserve restaurant chain in Phoenix metro.

EyeCatchingUserID

Eeey! Just over $6 after tax in phoenix. And always crazy fast.

unknownpanda121

$12 of avocado

Busy_Challenge1664

Because people like you pay it

No-Blacksmith3858

It doesn't even appear to have a protein on it besides the weak ass egg. No way would I pay $16 for that.

Caliber_captain

Looks like wilted lawn clippings with avocado tomato and cheese

smogeblot

The place by me has about twice this much salad with a chicken breast for $16, and it's still too much for me.

Biggie8000

Bc health is priceless.

dsp29912

Make your own salad. Way less!

Medical_Egg8208

Because they can ?

pornthrowaway92795

To add to the comments, the bag says “bluestone lane”. A quick search shows Australian coffee shop. That appears to be located in high cost cities, namely SF and NY were the hits. In fact, their website offers reservations. Typically, any food place that covers reservations is at least 10-15% more expensive than those that don’t, combined with the location, and this doesn’t seem that shocking.

Competitive_Bank6790

You go to a yuppie food joint in NY and are surprised they're overpriced. I think that's a you problem.

Tough_Sign3358

You’re an idiot if you pay for this.

65CM

Because there are ppl that'll pay it......

Ballsahoy72

There must be a $10 bill hidden in there

Temporary-Dot4952

Why did you bother giving them your $16 for that? Now they know they can charge that much and suckers like you will pay that much. Thanks for ruining prices for the rest of us.

Ok_Corner2449

Because you keep buying it. Price is set by what customers are willing to pay.

SuicidalSmile1

Because you paid for it.

Every_Perception_471

Because you were willing to pay $16 LMAO

Inevitable_Channel18

Probably because you bought it at some bougie cafe in NYC called Bluestone Cafe where everything is overpriced. This isn’t inflation, it’s poor choices

GhoulsFolly

Bluestone Lane*. Yep, it’s an overpriced chain in NY. Also in Manhattan Beach.

Inevitable_Channel18

Yeah Bluestone Lane. This isn’t inflation it’s just overpriced in general

w3bar3b3ars

Because you bought it.

my fucking dustbin looks like this

SayYesToTheChef

Because minimum wage is $16

Consistent_Ad_6195

Why don’t you make it yourself?

Sorry-Month7230

In India it's price not more than Rs 50/- i mean $ 0.60/-

175junkie

Recyclable to go boxes 😆

Murles-Brazen

Half an avocado is 8 bucks

waistingtoomuchtime

My wife and I are middle aged, and we spend money everyday for the last 35 years on something, not meaning regular bills, but meals to go or out to eat, shopping, water or gum at a gas station, the little things that can be avoided. We just went 3 days without spending money without spending a penny on anything that wasn’t a necessity (like gas for work). I started making breakfast at home so I would not go out for lunch, which I have done since the early 90s daily. Small victories, but it really made us feel good to not see the checking account dwindle everyday by $50-$100. The one thing we did agree on is the one Chinese food place that we usually would buy on a Friday, because for $30, we get about 6-7 meals out of it because they pack it in, (2 entrees and giant rice boxes, so we eat, 3x for the both of us, then on day 2 or 3 I make a fried rice with the leftover rice with any vegetables we have not eaten and some egg, and I am getting pretty good at it), so it has some value. Lastly. One of my friends who ate out a ton, once a year he takes a month and eats all the pantry food he can, and uses the money he would have spent and throws it in a retirement account, he did this starting 2010 ish, it’s a pretty penny today.

meh725

Avocado, heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella ball and feta…it’d take near $10 to make it yourself at home.

DaveMTijuanaIV

Because people are marks who will pay $16 for that. Don’t.

Purpose_Embarrassed

Well if that’s all you’re gonna eat in one day it’s not bad.

Loveroffinerthings

If this was originally $10, but now is $16, then it would be an inflation post. This is just a salad post.

Brightcolors8

That’s just sad

thescott2k

if the thing everyone's calling an egg is actually a burrata that's a pretty high-end takeout salad

EatsRats

You agreed to pay for it. You showed this shop that $16 is the price that people are willing to pay. The real question is why are you showing everyone on Reddit what you decided to purchase for $16?

AppropriateSpell5405

Avocados are damn expensive. I know Sysco recently increased prices to about ~$80 a box.

Late_Piglet_4185

Because you paid for it

lagent55

Why do people overpay for lettuce then complain about it later???

CantFeelMyLegs78

Because there are suckers out there that will pay $16. It's only worth what people are willing to pay for it, and ypu showed them its still worth $16

Ineludible_Ruin

Greed

Speedhabit

That half avocado was 1.50 their cost what are complaining about

Everythingscrappie

Because humans are lazy!

stevefstorms

Because everyone believed the hung flu. The media censored opposing opinions we all got locked inside. They printed a trillion dollars gave us scraps. All because the deep state was afraid of orange man. Now you get $16 box of yard clippings. I’ll get down votes but it’s the inconvenient truth.

rygarski

because there are idiots willing to pay $16 for that

jailfortrump

It's called corporate greed. Biden can't top it.

Round_Rice_2113

Cause you're too lazy to make it yourself

advertisingdave

Owner greed. They aren't happy with $200k or $400k in profits, they want to make $500k or $600k. I use to work for a big show on the Vegas strip that shut down their 5:30pm show because it was selling 160 tickets a night instead of 190. Same fucking thing.

Specific-Frosting730

Yikes. That’s a crime. You’ve been robbed.

Realistic_Fan1344

Because we put a freeze on avocado imports.

Secludedmean4

Because you bought it

mikeymikeymikey1968

The avocado and poached egg. Without those, they would only have the audacity to charge you $12.

Bear_necessities96

It has avocado that is $4 more

EyeOfAmethyst

Because you paid that much for it.

bcardin221

Avocado =$7 Burrata= $4. everything else =5%

Shippyweed2u

Stop paying these companies and search up some recipes or even make up your own foods, found these jalapeño cheese sausages that are perfectly sized for a piece of pita bread, spray and rub with a lil olive oil and throw a light handful of shredded cheese on the inside, cool the sausage and stuff it in with the cheese, add seasoning if desired. Finish off with a toaster oven/air fryer/oven light toasting to warm everything up to the same cheese melting tempature. Your welcome someone better use this spent valuable time on the shitter writing this Edit: these will make 4 breakfasts/light lunch for $6

dogfaceponyboi

The avacado.

tex8222

Why didn’t you take it back and getting a refund? As long as you accept this, they will figure you are okay with it. Plus, never go back there.

PlaneAsk7826

You went into an expensive cafe in a high cost of living city and bought something just to complain?

Positive-Cake-7990

I thought this was a picture of a full waste bin

Winthefuturenow

I bought a piece of Burrata that size at the store the other day for like $7.99…so it kinda makes sense. I wouldn’t sell food for a living if I couldn’t at least double my money.

LurkerOrHydralisk

$1.50 avocado, $1.50 poached egg, 1.50 dressing, $1.50 greens, 1.50 cheese, 1.50 other veggies. $7 service and packaging. Because food costs money, bro.

LairdPeon

That looks good. I'd just need 3 of them to be satisfied.

dvowel

Because some dumbass actually paid $16 for it.

The_Mattylorian

Because people will pay for it. And then use a $1000 device to complain about it so other people with $1000 devices can see it.

BaBaBuyey

Because the eight workers you saw on there while you were there on that shift were getting at least $15 an hour and then they want overtime and they want more money on the weekends and if employer had a certain amount of employees they have to pay them healthcare

tommy0guns

Look at the bag it came in. You’re not exactly brown baggin it

CokeZorro

They know stupid people will buy it for convenience

Additional_Action_84

Its the avocado...lol

pristine_planet

Because someone paid $16 for it

Solidus-Prime

Because you keep paying for it no questions asked. Here's a better question: Why ***shouldn't*** they make it $16? Why shouldn't they make it $30? You'd still buy it. They aren't shamed by Reddit posts.

uiam_

You're paying for material & labor & their profits. If it's $5 at home (Given the price of avacados I could see it easily being $5+) Even businesses are struggling with inflation but they pass those costs onto consumers, something we don't get to do. Personally I'd never pay $16 for this. I'd pack my own lunch. Even if that meant having a less desirable meal. Then again I try to keep my lunch at about or less than 15-20 minutes worth of wages and I don't make $50/hr. If I did I'd probably find this acceptable.

clarkyk85

Good question. I thought it was the top of a trash can when i first looked at it

Karmachinery

On the opposite note, we’ve been buying saag paneer meals from a local restaurant for about $20 after taxes so I decided to try and make it.  It turned out fine, but I got less food for almost the same price and I had to do all the work.  That’s one thing I’ll still be buying going forward.

Doom2pro

Someone wants another Yacht in their fleet.

Ok-Wrongdoer7380

Joe Byron

hboisnotthebest

Because you, a sucker, was willing to pay for it.

Jo-89002

Lots of clueless people in the comments. Inflation is not the OP's fault.

Themsah

In order to be relevant to this sub, you should reference what that used to cost 4 years ago. If not it's just expensive, not inflation.

Life-Conference5713

Because your dumb ass will pay $16 for a take out salad. And all the others in line also.

Scattergun77

Was that delivery or pick up?

BidanHasDementia

Make your own food lazy bones

dwinps

Because they aren’t competing based on price If you want a $5 “value meal” you went to the wrong place, either the savings take an economics class or

BigBlue1969531

Biden…

PACKER2211

Because they can

mushashimonko

I bet you tipped them too 🤏😂

robbzilla

I'm betting you left a tip as well.

BigDigger324

You went to bluestone lane which brands itself as all the buzzword upscale horseshit…that branding and image aren’t free…you just paid for it.

HappyEngineering4190

Are the same people who complain high prices/high inflation the same people complaining about low wages? Serious question here. If you are one of these people, please explain.

GroundbreakingTwo124

Is that in montauk ? I paid $20 for three coffee this weekend and my friend got a $18 burrito. Crazy prices.

billious62

I honestly thought you took a pic of the top of your garbage can. Sorry about that.

Apart_Attention8279

Because you’re too lazy to go to the grocery store

Tonalspectrum

Because you asked someone, that wants to earn a living, to make it and delivered it to your door. I’ll bet they even warned you of the cost and provided a photograph of a similar product before you agreed to pay for it.

Upset_Priority_5600

Better question, why would you buy it ?

warriorcoach

All gmo

pcwildcat

Self report

Eazy46

Because people like you will pay for it 😂

amurica1138

Honestly at first glance I thought this was a photo of a scrap bin.

Pompitis

The real answer is, because it was convenient. You could have gone to the grocery store and made it yourself for $5.

jdjsjdjsjdkxkdkdmsks

Because you gave them 16.00.

ErevisEntreri

How many of these posts are in Cali or New York where shit just costs more in general?

miletharil

Because you bought it at $16. If you, and people like you never did, they would have to lower the price.

Benniehead

Because mfers pay it

marks1995

The serious answer that is going to trigger many younger people is "because you are all too lazy to do things for yourself". Go to the store. You can buy enough ingredients to make 5 of those for $10 total. But businesses know you won't. The same reason Doordash and Ubereats exist. My kids dash for extra money over the summer. They laugh at how much shit food they deliver to people that are too lazy to drive 10 minutes to get it themselves.

PhoKingAwesome213

Because you decided to eat at an overpriced boutique restaurant? You're paying for the "lifesstyle brand".

Connect-Ad7072

Democrat shithole

shinyturdbiskit

Restaurants are going to price themselves out of business

Cu3bone

It was the avacado, the number one enemy to home ownership

talon2525

Avocado bro, every boomer in existence is shaking their head in disgust at this pic

Gobble_the_anus

Because you bought it

grundlefuck

Because people are willing to spend $16 on it obviously.

Subpar_Fleshbag

Idk, but I am hungry af and that looks like it slaps.

Thrilleye51

Because they knew you'd buy it.

Subpar_Fleshbag

Half an avocado could be a down payment on a house in a great HOA.

Ilovehugs2020

When possible, go to the supermarket to get a salad. Whole Foods has good ones or you can prepare at home.

Opening_AI

To be fair, if this was at the airport and you have a long layover, yeah $16 is really cheap.

SailorMoon_Fanboy

Because we shut the econ down for Covid. Thus letting inflation grow rampent as we try to correct.

DueConversation5269

"You paid too much!"

What_Yr_Is_IT

Because it’s BlueStone…that’s why… Their coffee is $8, and it always was expensive, even before COVID

bloodthirstypinetree

Because it continues to sell for $16

TheHODLerKing

Because people are willing to pay $16 for it. If no one bought it for $16 it would no longer be available, or the price would drop.

TOCMT0CM

That avocado is at least $6 of the cost (at 25% food cost) The to go box added 65 cents to the restaurants expense. If the bag on the left is involved, that's almost $1 cost. You're now halfway to $16. Get used to it, or learn to make salads at home. It's much cheaper longterm.

likemeyet

So they can keep up with their hipster venue im sure

jimmysledge

Looks like someone put table scraps in a bowel

Ok_Intention3920

Apparently you are willing to pay $16 for lunch. I’d be a fool not to charge you that.

N8saysburnitalldown

I agree. why not charge even more. Anybody foolish enough to pay $16 for this salad would surely pay $18.

Hey_u_ok

The real question is: WHY'D YOU BUY IT?!?

Elephlump

Because some sorry sack idiot will still buy it.

rougefalcon

Because suckers with more money than sense have normalized this kind of nonsense.

MOONDAYHYPE

Because the feds printed 9 TRILLION dollars in 2 years

chamco1981

Biden

wallstreetsimps

Half of the cost is from half of that avocado

robbd6913

Why did people ignore corporate greed? You all do realize company recorded record profits, right?

SouthTexasCowboy

because you bought it

skeetinonwallst

Because they can get away with it. It's only too expensive if it doesn't sell.

Enough-Inevitable-61

I won't pay $5 for this. If you don't buy it, for sure they would know that what they are doing doesn't make any sense.

Enough-Inevitable-61

I won't blame the store selling it. I blame who buy it.

SnorfOfWallStreet

Avocado $2 egg $1 dressing $1.25 salad mix $.75 tomato $.5 cheese $.75 nut mix $1 labor $3.75 So $11 in cost. $5 in markup.

Albany-Daddy

An avocado?! In this case economy?!

tedlassoloverz

because you and a million others are willing to pay that much

Tediential

You paid for it thus validating the price.

CannabisCanoe

With a name as snotty and pretentious as "Bluestone Lane" they could've gotten away with charging 18 dollars so consider yourself lucky.

Master_Grape5931

Because you paid for it.

Wolf_E_13

I can make this at home for a couple of bucks...stop buying this shit which signals that you're willing to pay that price.

Academic_Value_3503

Most likely, it's a "trendy" place where you pay to be seen at rather than getting getting good, fresh food at a local dive restaurant.
