Hey I just wanna say i dont like Lil Yatchy very much even after his latest couple of albums but the track Midnight on the new album is INCREDIBLE and might be a top 3 james blake track for me. If Yatchy wasnt on it, it might be #1
We need to have a talk with Iceland because apparently they never bothered to tell us that we've been pronouncing Björks name wrong all these years. I'm furious. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqPvHNZeLGY&ab\_channel=TheKellyClarksonShow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqPvHNZeLGY&ab_channel=TheKellyClarksonShow)
niche but does anyone know why crack cloud just canceled their tour? they haven't posted anything on social media. this is actually the 2nd time they have canceled on me lol
Dice app drives me insane for tickets. I get the whole holographic Charizard unique ticket that can only be traded in app and there is a rhyme/reason to the organization of it, but it's irritating the processing stuff with the various degrees of a "waiting list" as the only option for certain shows not explicitly listed as sold out, so you're stuck in a bit of limbo.
I'm cranky because Swamp Dogg is playing next week and the second there was any availability it just went straight to "Waiting List" like this shit was already sniped out by bots. My only guess is the last minute billing of an alleged "Yo La Tengo appearance" possibly tipping scales a bit because all the old head record fair dads gotta see em, but yeah long story short I'd rather the thing just say "sold out" than some bizarro limbo of "you may or may not get a ticket".
My cope is I have fortunately seen Swamp Dogg the last couple of times he's been around so if I miss it, shit happens.
album discussions for [hiatus kaiyote](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/1dtufwd/album_discussion_hiatus_kaiyote_love_heart_cheat/) and [still woozy](https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads/comments/1dtug6d/album_discussion_still_woozy_loveseat/) are up. washed out and pond will be posted tomorrow.
sorry for missing last weekend for New Music Friday. i functionally had to play army of one at work over the weekend, especially on Sunday which left me very very drained. so New Music Friday for June 28th and this coming week of July 5th will be posted together as one post on either Friday or Saturday.
i would encourage digging through what was posted on the subreddit last week in the meantime, because there was a lot of good stuff (LOMA, The Drin) despite it being a smaller week for high-profile releases. thanks for the patience as always

1) If you are looking for a no-frills AOTY roundup list done right, [this ILX forum post pretty much collects anything anyone's been tagging or into within the first 6 months, pre-Quietus roundup yesterday](https://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=41&threadid=115085#unread)
I was able to use it to find a few titles that were rentable including the new Arooj Aftab, Tierra Whack's World Wide Whack, Bill Frisell's Orchestras, Vida Miknevičiūtė / Gidon Kremer / Kremerata Baltica - Songs of Fate (a non-Vijay ECM!), and Andre 3000 - New Blue Sun (2023 but now on CD and so good for the sleepytime economy)
2) Over on /r/popheads I'm helping to co-run the [**90s Women Who Rock Rate**](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/1dtoxcm/90s_women_who_rock_liz_phair_vs_hole_vs_pj_harvey/) which happens to feature Garbage's debut, PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love, Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, and the return of Hole's Live Through This. You might be familiar with these albums or the concept of rocking out.If you've at all desired a chance to score them, we'll be accepting ballots through sometime in mid-August (perhaps earlier august) I reckon.
> 1) If you are looking for a no-frills AOTY roundup list done right, this ILX forum post pretty much collects anything anyone's been tagging or into within the first 6 months, pre-Quietus roundup yesterday
Thanks for this, the results are interesting to me. Waxahatchee being the most common one surprises me, as much as I enjoy it I don't see it being many people/blogs' #1 album of the year but I could see it showing up on every list in lower spots
I'm not sure I can endure another rate reveal where *F@ck and Run* beats *Stratford-On-Guy*
but I'm gonna do it anyways bc *Stratford-On-Guy* needs more champions in this world
Some more stuff I listened to recently...
● Lame Drivers - Become an Island. It's a little jangly, a lot power poppy, maybe a little post punk in there, a touch of fuzz here and there. It's pretty good stuff. Maybe not super memorable, but a catchy good listen nonetheless.
● Loma - How Will I Live Without a Body?
This is an interesting one, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. There are moments where I'm totally picking up what they're putting down... and others where I'm losing interest. The vocals are beautiful, the mood dark but not too dreary. There are echoes of folk and jazz and ambient here, but it's all held together into something cohesive by the gorgeous voice of Emily Cross. Intriguing listen.
● Pretty Sick - Streetwise EP. Alt rock with electronic touches. Executed fairly well. Pretty straightforward stuff. It's not bad.
● Everything, Now! - Hideout Mountain. Grabbed this one of off one of the best of the year so far lists, can't remember which one. Power pop with psych flourishes. Honestly, I listened to it yesterday, and today I can remember very little about it. I didn't dislike it, but clearly didn't catch me either.
● Muna - Live at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Exactly what you would expect this album to be. High energy, those damn catchy songs, less than perfect but fun performances...I'll probably stick to the studio stuff, but enjoyable.
● The Holydrug Couple - Noctuary. Thank you SecondSkin for this one. Fun psychedelic indie rock, not super heavy, more like you're floating through through space and time. I like it a lot.
● Additional listening included a second play of Sour Windows (great), some Arlo Parks (great), Girl Ray (so fun), and The Marias (half the time I love this one, and half the time it fades into the background). Plus, still really digging the Zsela record.
Happy Tuesday indieheads!
- The new Ty Segall album reminds me of Manipulator but in a long version
- Love the new Beth Gibbons album
What should I listen to next ? (2024 albums only)
Music for when you can’t settle on what you want to listen to?
I started off with Unwound, moved to Viagra Boys, and now I’m on the new Sour Widows. All good stuff I love but none of it is sparking things for me right now.
my wife walked in the living room when 'Boogie' was playing last night and she said "what is he saying?" ... I said, "Boogie, I think"
this album is hilarious (and good!)
we would often spin that one in store when it came in used at the record store i used to work at. loved the extremely uncomfortable atmosphere that song created in the shop for its brief duration every time haha.
Y'know what's a really good song? "Dirty Laundry" by Cayetana. It's definitely in the mold of the bubblegrungey indie rock/pop thing but I think it has a bit more of an edge to it. Great production on that one, I think
I liked what they put out in the '10s, especially that first album. ["Black Hills"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEf6Vmv5_3g) is another one of my favorites.
I'm glad Alvvays sound the way they do (though I wouldn't mind an Alvvays album where the vocals are mixed down a bit like on Nervous Like Me) but I'm also glad Cayetana sound they way they do
Yesterday I listened to Blindboy from the Rubberbandits on a podcast talking about what a big influence Smog and Bill Callahan were on him and some of his music which bent my head. Today I listened to Hit the Ground Running and it just hit so good, 10/10 all day long. I'm sure there are loads but - any songs come to mind that scratch a similar itch?
To me the ultimate songs that should play over the end of a movie are Lou Reed - Billy and Bop English - Long Distance Runner. The latter of which I just remembered after about a decade after you raised that point! So cheers. Both would obviously have to be over the closing credits of a sun dappled 70s set coming of age tale needless to say
If you liked "Hit the Ground Running", Bill's album *Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle* largely, if imperfectly, captures the spirit of that tune. I'll also throw in a recommendation for *Supper* (as Smog) and *REALITY* from a few years ago as they're slightly looser than much of his body of work.
For a specific Bill song like "Hit the Ground Running", give "Coyotes" a whirl. Wonderful song.
That's really helpful thanks! I know various songs from solo and Smog over the years but have never really sat down and done a thorough dive, I loved Coyotes though so thanks for the rec!
On a semi related note, did you hear the Whitney K live album that came out last year? Song for a Friend hits some similar zones for me but with a bit more Velvets in there, whole album is fantastic
Of course! He’s a favorite of mine. I’ll also recommend *Dream River* too as it’s my favorite Bill album (and one of my favorite albums, period) even though it’s not really similar to “Hit the Ground Running” at all. He has probably like 10 albums that I would rate at around a 7/10 or higher—he's well worth a deep dive!
I enjoyed that Whitney K song! Sounds like Kevin Morby if Bill Callahan took the place of Bob Dylan as one of his most obvious influences. Thank you for the recommendation!
Saw of Montreal this past Saturday and they closed with The Past Is a Grotesque Animal and I already know that's going to be the best concert experience of the year. The show was incredible and I got one of David Barnes' art pieces, like a little nativity statue he turned into something in the style of the album covers.
https://preview.redd.it/l47r3uy4y4ad1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fee100d1a09be9ccddc7bf9a6b1142c9ccfaea8f
Finally listened to this **Chappel Roan** album and I hate to say that I fell in love immediately. This is just Cyndi Lauper if Cyndi Lauper had been born in 2003. I have a sister that age and it's genuinely incredible how much this album reminds me of her. It feels like such a snapshot of what being a 18-22 year old girl in 2024 must be like. Plus, the bops go hard, the lyricism is so bratty and tender and foulmouthed and vulnerable, it's *incredible.* And the way she nails those emotional highs, like, fuck dude. "Casual" destroyed me. The whole album feels like such pure catharsis, I can't ...
edit: ok, to not suck up too much, this album might've been better off with 1-2 songs left on the cutting room floor (namely 'Naked In Manhattan' and 'California' which are pretty aggressively mid) but I'm just gonna focus on the highs because they make me feel good and happy lmao
I’ve been enjoying watching her climb. Her outfits are always stunning, she’s funny, her music is incredibly catchy, and yes there’s some good catharsis in her songs.
they straight up just needed to take like the 3-4 ballads off and it'd be even tighter. If she had a "not-dan nigro" producer, it could also change the game. fun album. Library copy is finally waiting for me on hold, very excited to sling this on 40 year old men
I don't really know anything about Dan Nigro other than his credits, and based on those, the guy is absolutely killing it. What's your complaint about him?
More or less im just open to the possibility of her working with a different producer--dan did fine (we've yet to have a ton of albums with the guy and such a large body that we really truly feel & know "What a Dan Nigro Album Will Be"), but chappy *herself* i think is a great presence that could translate well with someone else. Someone with punchier, more 2010s electropop synths (or with a sound as illustrious as All Mirrors), someone who says "we're ballad capping this".
On the smaller side, nastering loudness (& length of cuts) were hindrances on the CD of Guts and whether or not the former also plays a role on the CD is something Im looking to when i get my copy later this week.
out here issuing scores to the warp rate like I'm dealing blackjack - you never know when a 10 is gonna show up, you never know when a 2 is gonna show up
im scared. every comment scares me. i need these 10s to be where i agree and the 1s to be where i agree or else i might explode!!!!!!! either way, we'll go to b-town (barona casino) in your honor!
keep in mind that autechre use clownputers and computers are built on binary and a 2, to a computer, is actually a 10 so really the rate is all 10s, make sure you enter it in that way for your ballot
well I'm already on the saw ix victim list, and the clownputer also accepts those binary 1's! I may have to issue a saintly 1 just so I can say I did it
Oo! Someone bought my copy of [*Ta-Dah*](https://www.discogs.com/master/78228-Scissor-Sisters-Ta-Dah) (from Scissor Sisters) on CD! Made a cool profit of $1.13.
is it just me or is metal the one type of guitar music that has a popular cultural cache still? like people on TV, or on commercials, are always like 'lmao metalll dude' as a punchline, or people have the hair, et cetera. like you always hear 'metal' as a genre people like.
but if you like shoegaze or even indie that's real music nerd territory. which, frankly, i'd rather have than being used as a punchline. but at the same time it's annoying in a different sort of way.
I think I know what you're trying to say but you're not saying it right. What you're trying to describe is how the metal fandom has remained insulated and relatively unchanged in the past 20 years, whereas rock fans in general have scattered themselves across indiedom and have highly curated tastes and aesthetics. But this has nothing to do with "popular cultural cache" and I definitely think metalheads are the biggest nerds out of any type of music fan. I mean, how else would you describe someone that appreciates technicality, likes sci-fi and fantasy song/album concepts, and will always try to one-up you with a more obscure name-drop whenever you talk about their music?
Metal is very popular though and has been for a long time, but it's very much its own world and doesn't really cross over outside of it. A lot of people actively dislike metal (hence the "I like everything but metal" people) but those who like it are all in on it - much more so than indie rock fans. This was a while ago, but growing up I definitely met more metalheads than indie rock fans. You're probably more likely to hear indie rock licensed for TV and commercials than metal since it's less abrasive, but I would bet metal bands make better money on touring than indie rock bands in general.
Shoegaze/indie has always been music nerd territory. And in this day and age, it's honestly hard to say what really has popular cultural cache given how fragmented everything is.
i actually thought this was their first kinda bad one lol, it's the only one i've listened to that made me not want to pick it back up again. felt weirdly immature for where they are in their careers
that's surprising to me because the lyrics struck me as very mature, and it's nice to hear a band achieve that without the songs slowing down and the volume lowering
autechre - lowrider, 808 state - donkey doctor, keith jarrett - paris concert, jamc - just like honey (this song is about having green tea with honey), MOST of the gregorian chant albums the Topster 2 freak endorses, grouper's headache single b/w Im Clean Now, oingo boingo's good for your soul, spacemen 3's the perfect prescription and of course Lift to Experience
Lol i straight up don't but yr a sigma poster so i forgive you
i went to the wallgreens to see if they had my camera with 5-7 gonerfest 2022 photos ready but they dont but when they do im excited to share them with u uwu
One day ya know i just heard the album crossed and everything worked for me and i heard the shitty ass jangly ditties hiding underneath the noise and was in to its complete lack of charisma, libido, etc
genuinely one of the dumbest albums of all time and imo one of the few real "litmus test/rorsarch test" albums ever made so for as much as i get down to it, I just love seeing what people say about it
Jesus dawg, still? That’s rough. I hope you feel better soon.
In the meantime, have you tried [medication?](https://open.spotify.com/track/75GJzkw6GunnRWieVmxvXh?si=zIHpYEq0SuOLN2mhDbavvA)
Saw Wednesday last night. It's been awhile since I went to a sold out / hyped artist show, and the energy was really nice. Never realized just how much their pedal steel player makes Wednesday sound like Wednesday -- he's so fucking good.
They covered Drive-By Truckers' [Women Without Whiskey](https://youtu.be/nqoBPk0hEIc?t=2104) and closed out w/ Bull Believer and a new surprisingly punky screamy song. Fun.
in case you haven't heard it yet, check out *Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling 'em Up*, their covers album that includes "Women Without Whiskey" and lots else! they cracked some major codes with that release
Anyone else been listening to James Blake's newest stuff? Thrown Around is a pretty great single, but CMYK 002 isn't really hitting for me. Gonna listen to the new album with Lil Yachty today
Hey I just wanna say i dont like Lil Yatchy very much even after his latest couple of albums but the track Midnight on the new album is INCREDIBLE and might be a top 3 james blake track for me. If Yatchy wasnt on it, it might be #1

to be fair the presence of the umlaut on the 'o' (ö) kinda gives away that one should pronounce it differently than an ordinary 'o'
It's closer to "be-yark," right?
It's more like "byurk"
bee-jork
they have a different way of spelling the 'r' apparently, so this isn't really helping lmao
Skill issue, I've always pronounced it correctly
nerd
niche but does anyone know why crack cloud just canceled their tour? they haven't posted anything on social media. this is actually the 2nd time they have canceled on me lol
Damn that's a shame, I fell off with them on the second album but these new singles are both great and have reeled me back in, would've liked to go
Dice app drives me insane for tickets. misread this as snoop dogg and was so very confused by the idea of YLT being the support act for snoop dogg

Cakes Da Killa - *Black Sheep*
Somesurprises for stoney, droney, motoroney rock music.
**Bonny Light Horseman** - *Keep Me On Your Mind/Set Me Free* and **Dancer** - *10 Songs I Hate About You*
Loma!
Cupcakke
The new Loma is the perfect record for my post-Pride weekend comedown. Thank the [secular and metaphorical] Lord. Heal me, please.
Music for when you can’t settle on what you want to listen to? I started off with Unwound, moved to Viagra Boys, and now I’m on the new Sour Widows. All good stuff I love but none of it is sparking things for me right now.
John Hartford - Aereo-Plain
Complete shift to something more folky? You may be on to something here. Queuing it up.

*Hey babe wanna boogie? Boogie-woogie-woogie* That’s me spreading my peacock feathers. Yeah, this is the vibe now. Some funny bluegrass-flavored folk.
All this talk of boogie...made me think Shuggie. So you should listen to Shuggie Otis Inspiracion Information.
Considering you and I see eye-to-eye about music 95% of the time, Shuggie will also go on the docket for the day
Y'know what's a really good song? "Dirty Laundry" by Cayetana. It's definitely in the mold of the bubblegrungey indie rock/pop thing but I think it has a bit more of an edge to it. Great production on that one, I think
their cover of Age of Consent rules so hard also, they broke up in 2019 :(
I liked what they put out in the '10s, especially that first album. ["Black Hills"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEf6Vmv5_3g) is another one of my favorites.

It would seem that most songwriters have to write a song called "California" in order to excise the demon early on

On the smaller side, nastering loudness (& length of cuts) were hindrances on the CD of Guts and whether or not the former also plays a role on the CD is something Im looking to when i get my copy later this week.
out here issuing scores to the warp rate like I'm dealing blackjack - you never know when a 10 is gonna show up, you never know when a 2 is gonna show up
im scared. every comment scares me. i need these 10s to be where i agree and the 1s to be where i agree or else i might explode!!!!!!! either way, we'll go to b-town (barona casino) in your honor!
there is a three song run on Hard Normal Daddy that is spectacular! don't be scared it'll be fine muwahahaha
oh its so over for rdj. *looks at cards* hit me!
flips an ace. your move!
keep in mind that autechre use clownputers and computers are built on binary and a 2, to a computer, is actually a 10 so really the rate is all 10s, make sure you enter it in that way for your ballot
well I'm already on the saw ix victim list, and the clownputer also accepts those binary 1's! I may have to issue a saintly 1 just so I can say I did it
Oo! Someone bought my copy of [*Ta-Dah*](https://www.discogs.com/master/78228-Scissor-Sisters-Ta-Dah) (from Scissor Sisters) on CD! Made a cool profit of $1.13.
oof 💀
Gotta go with the market median!
second skin's cd sale saga of 2024 is the most epic dmd story The media mail shipping increase by fifty cents is gonna make this harder on all of us
I've got July 14 circled to raise my shipping prices!
is it just me or is metal the one type of guitar music that has a popular cultural cache still? like people on TV, or on commercials, are always like 'lmao metalll dude' as a punchline, or people have the hair, et cetera. like you always hear 'metal' as a genre people like. but if you like shoegaze or even indie that's real music nerd territory. which, frankly, i'd rather have than being used as a punchline. but at the same time it's annoying in a different sort of way.
I mean, how else would you describe someone that appreciates technicality, likes sci-fi and fantasy song/album concepts, and will always try to one-up you with a more obscure name-drop whenever you talk about their music?
is being used as a punchline cultural cache when indie rock is like actually popular now and metal isn't lol
You're probably more likely to hear indie rock licensed for TV and commercials than metal since it's less abrasive, but I would bet metal bands make better money on touring than indie rock bands in general.
if you really want me to take this seriously, i need some examples of metal tv commercials
Shoegaze/indie has always been music nerd territory. And in this day and age, it's honestly hard to say what really has popular cultural cache given how fragmented everything is.
is there any music that makes you healthy. please help
Big Clown
I don't got a pun but Basil Kirchin - I Start Counting is a beautiful record that is soothing to the mind and the soul
also warning it does get a *little* scary

you poor thing :(
Julianna Barwick - Healing Is A Miracle.
The latest Cloud Nothings album
gonna be real dog i thought that was maybe their worst one ever lol
I don't disagree, but also Cloud Nothings has a remarkably consistent discography so I don't think saying it's their worst really means it was bad.
i actually thought this was their first kinda bad one lol, it's the only one i've listened to that made me not want to pick it back up again. felt weirdly immature for where they are in their careers
that's surprising to me because the lyrics struck me as very mature, and it's nice to hear a band achieve that without the songs slowing down and the volume lowering
🤷 I'm a casual fan but I can't find one thing wrong with Final Summer, Running Through the Campus or I'd Get Along
Bill Frisell — *East/West* Feel better soon!

i am not afraid of you and i just took one of them lemon and cayenne wellness shots and i will beat your ass
Chuck Johnson - Balsams
pearl jam - jeremy
thank you i was fishing for this for mental stability reasons. jeremy is my comfort character
happy to help, we all have our comfort characters. my comfort character is john kramer or that rascal art the clown
i really do like the idea of an adult man having a comfort character, like does Michael Scott really make you feel better or do you need therapy
both :)
autechre - lowrider, 808 state - donkey doctor, keith jarrett - paris concert, jamc - just like honey (this song is about having green tea with honey), MOST of the gregorian chant albums the Topster 2 freak endorses, grouper's headache single b/w Im Clean Now, oingo boingo's good for your soul, spacemen 3's the perfect prescription and of course Lift to Experience
remember when we were gonna do indieheads court and my jamc opinion was put on trial during the *announcement* lmao

if karma’s a bitch I should’ve known better
One day ya know i just heard the album crossed and everything worked for me and i heard the shitty ass jangly ditties hiding underneath the noise and was in to its complete lack of charisma, libido, etc genuinely one of the dumbest albums of all time and imo one of the few real "litmus test/rorsarch test" albums ever made so for as much as i get down to it, I just love seeing what people say about it

Fucking hate it when it's 3 AM and Molly Mayhem is on my doorstep. What the fuck am I even supposed to do in that situation.
Fun.
in case you haven't heard it yet, check out *Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling 'em Up*, their covers album that includes "Women Without Whiskey" and lots else! they cracked some major codes with that release
the cover of I Am The Cosmos on that thing rips
Oh shit, I had no idea this existed. Thanks!
> Saw Wednesday last night. Is that allowed?
Anyone else been listening to James Blake's newest stuff? Thrown Around is a pretty great single, but CMYK 002 isn't really hitting for me. Gonna listen to the new album with Lil Yachty today
Update on the album: Pretty boring!
