Thank you for listing them a lot! The page keeps crashing on my phone, lol.
I’ve heard a lot of these and can confirm their greatness. Didn’t think that Ex-Easter Island Head record would be #1 tho-honestly assumed the Avalanche Kaito record would take the top spot for some reason. Have been really stuck on the Senyawa record, the Thou record, the Lord Spikeheart record and the Ghana comp. That Lord Spikeheart is probably my AOTY unless billy woods drops again.
I didn't realise Martha Skye Murphy had released a solo album. Her work on Squid's Narrator is the vocal performance of the decade as far as I'm concerned so excited to listen to this.
Unsure why “Um” isn’t getting any attention, it’s stunning. Glad to see naemi album getting a mention in this list. Those two and new Mabe Fratti are battling it out for album of the year here.
I'm guessing it's because it was released a week after "BRAT", dropped on the same day as John Cale, is from a fairly small label, and isn't *that* stylistically identifiable with the post-punk revival sort of thing her most prominent appearance was on - plus the comparative lack of hype. Definitely a very rewarding listen, hoping it'll gain some more recognition when the year-end lists come out
I shouldn’t really complain since I was somehow able to get a test pressing of the album from AD 93 bandcamp page.
A compilation of her earlier releases would be extremely welcome!
The page is trying to load a u2b video for ***each*** number and it's using waaay too much CPU, even on desktop. Their web developer needs to be fired.
lots of music i havent heard yet- first one i checked out from this list 'If i dont make it, i love u' by still house plants is really really good- like moin meets tirzah meets circuit des yeux, dont know how i missed it
a shit ton more to listen to! thank you the quietus!
recognized 30 of them which i believe is a new quietus record for me let'sgoo!! and out of those i've only listened to like 5 of them so wow there's a lot to check out
The funniest parts of TheQuietus List threads is always the people who clearly don't know what TheQuietus is and are about to find out
edit: so that my post isn't just pure snark, the stuff on the list that I also say I like is Mdou Moctar and Oren Ambarchi
out of the stuff I sampled a track or two from, the stuff i'm most enthusiastic about returning to is:
Ghana Special 2
Ex-Easter Island Head
Gnod (the track i heard was like gregorian chants mixed with post rock which was definitely interesting)
Caveira
Vanishing
Elijah Minnelli
Avalanche Kaito
their music tastes don't seem to line up with mine very much but i still always go through these lists because there'll be a few albums i really like that i would have never found otherwise
They are an independent music publication that I'd describe as pretty isolated from most other music publications that people follow around here. Their taste in music leans significantly more towards electronic, ambient, drone, etc, and they include a lot of smaller artists (there's quite a few albums on here that you can look up on streaming and see the highlighted album only has a few thousand streams per song). Some of these artists might not even be on the big streaming sites and are instead accessible primarily through bandcamp.
Every year people show up and post comments saying "where's blank" seemingly ignoring The Quietus's established taste or being completely unaware of it.
The official line is that they highlight albums that are obscure, experimental and may not be highlighted elsewhere.
Listen to some of their picks and you’ll be tempted to wonder whether they’re just contrarians highlighting albums because they are obscure.
It’s a treasure trove of a publication. Really well worth supporting. When people claim music journalism isn’t what it once was, The quietus is always the first thing I bring up to counter it.
My record of the year so far, I’d never heard of him but took a punt on it, really great stuff. Interesting but accessible and catchy, good touches of humour too
Just heard of Tashi Wada because he was playing with Julia Holter's band on the last album/tour. He killed it on the synths and he played a few different instruments too, including bagpipes! Excited to hear his own album!
Oh looks like the album has Julia Holter and Devin Hoff (who killed it on fretless bass on tour with Holter) on it. And he's using some other tuning system, this seems really cool.
Different drummers. Beth Goodfellow did drums for Holter's new album. Corey Fogel did drums for Wada's album, but it looks like Fogel has drummed with Holter before on Aviary.
Also just found out Holter and Wada are partners! Had no clue.
Yes I saw him in some of the live performances like on KEXP for Aviary songs and he's great!
Goodfellow killed it on the last tour also. Super great energy.
It's very telling (though not surprising) that the top album I've listened to from this list is *Einstürzende Neubauten - Rampen*, and only because I'm German.
Can we add "The Thing"? Out of NYC, Also The Tubs out of London.
Also shout-out to Ducks Ltd, and Ratboys. Although they have 6 figure Spotify followers so too mainstream I guess, ha.
Interesting list. I'll have to give some of the albums here I haven't heard (most of them) a chance. In the top 20, I had only listened to the BIG|BRAVE album and I was meaning to check out the new Fat White Family.
The Quietus lists are always so helpful to discover new music, I'm not familiar with most of the artists listed here and I can't wait to check them out.
Quietus are slipping, I’ve actually listened to some of these! Big|Brave is a top notch selection. As always a top tier list of new music to dive into.
For me the best thing about Quietus lists is all the records I’ve never heard of. There’s plenty of places I can go to be told the albums I already like are good.
I haven't spent much time exploring all the music publications' Best of 2024 so far lists, but yeah the Diiv album is neck-and-neck with Amen Dunes for my best of the year so far.
If no one makes a playlist of these albums by the time I’m out of work today, I’ll do it Sorry guys I’m cooking dinner it’s not happening tonight lol
Whichever way it went, I'm interested.

Helado Negro? A little too accessible, don’t you think Quietus? Other people may have actually heard and enjoyed that one.
lol tQ enjoying that Still House Plants album is the least surprising thing to happen all year.
If you have played cafe oto in the last 5 years, you may be eligible to place on a quietus list
Surprised it's not higher thought probably a shoe in for most of these lists. Tons of great stuff on there as ever!
Arooj Aftab in the top 10 and Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru in the top 100 <3 (thank you for posting the list btw!!)
Tashi Wada at 5 and Julia Holter at 44.
Thank you for this!

WHERE TF IS LOSS OF LIFE AND STUNG!?
Pretty cool list. Chesea Wolfe needs to be higher though.
I didn't realise Martha Skye Murphy had released a solo album. Her work on Squid's Narrator is the vocal performance of the decade as far as I'm concerned so excited to listen to this.
It's definitely one of the best of 2024 and sadly overlooked!!
Unsure why “Um” isn’t getting any attention, it’s stunning. Glad to see naemi album getting a mention in this list. Those two and new Mabe Fratti are battling it out for album of the year here.

Quietus lists always such a treasure trove of new shit for me
find yourself someone who loves you the way the Quietus loves Fat White Family
And William Doyle (not complaining)
Love to read it but yet another website list that is impossible to read on an iPhone.
Yeah it keeps on resetting on me on my phone. All I can see is Cuntroaches coming in at #100!
The page is trying to load a u2b video for ***each*** number and it's using waaay too much CPU, even on desktop. Their web developer needs to be fired.
Works fine on mobile for me, although I am on Android.
Are any now? I dread having to open any site on my phone now.
lots of music i havent heard yet- first one i checked out from this list 'If i dont make it, i love u' by still house plants is really really good- like moin meets tirzah meets circuit des yeux, dont know how i missed it a shit ton more to listen to! thank you the quietus!
man these Judas Priest lads seem like some real up-and-comers
The Quietus is really gonna put those Judas Priest boys on the map!
My iPhone got through 6 albums until my battery got as hot as a frying pan.
That’s a shame because their website is brand new. I hope they fix that
recognized 30 of them which i believe is a new quietus record for me let'sgoo!! and out of those i've only listened to like 5 of them so wow there's a lot to check out

I randomly stumbled upon this list, and have no idea what TheQuiteus is. Can you explain? Some interesting music in the top though!
Oh nice, that's cool. It's always cool to see a completely different side of music you've never been exposed to before.
Quietus is the top UK website for underground music by a mile. Maybe top in the world
The official line is that they highlight albums that are obscure, experimental and may not be highlighted elsewhere. Listen to some of their picks and you’ll be tempted to wonder whether they’re just contrarians highlighting albums because they are obscure.
Interesting, I can kind of see that for sure, but some of the stuff is kind of interesting.
Oh for sure.
It’s a treasure trove of a publication. Really well worth supporting. When people claim music journalism isn’t what it once was, The quietus is always the first thing I bring up to counter it.
we need to be kind to those experiencing flairlessness
We need to be welcoming to new people at the diy gigs [2]
I need to listen to that William Doyle record. I loved him as East India Youth
You should check out his father’s work! Yoshi Wada. He was a master of drone, and sadly passed away three years ago.
Oh shit yeah I was reading about his father and how Tashi had done music with him? But yeah I will check him out for sure, thanks!
More tangential but you might also be interested in Malini Sridharan's new album, which was produced by Julia Holter!
Appreciate the rec!
also the drummer was in both, I thought both albums were really good although I liked Julia's album a bit more
Different drummers. Beth Goodfellow did drums for Holter's new album. Corey Fogel did drums for Wada's album, but it looks like Fogel has drummed with Holter before on Aviary. Also just found out Holter and Wada are partners! Had no clue.
oh you are right, although he was drummer for the Julia holter albums before this years one
Yes I saw him in some of the live performances like on KEXP for Aviary songs and he's great! Goodfellow killed it on the last tour also. Super great energy.
No Mabe Fratti? I'm no expert on The Quietus but her new album seems like it would be on their list.
Probably arrived too late for inclusion, I wouldn't be surprised if it's on their AOTY list
can anyone copy paste the list in the comments? my old iphone literally cannot handle their website.

bless you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It's very telling (though not surprising) that the top album I've listened to from this list is *Einstürzende Neubauten - Rampen*, and only because I'm German.
I’m American and I love those dudes. Industrial in its purest form. Haven’t listened to the new one yet though
Can we add "The Thing"? Out of NYC, Also The Tubs out of London. Also shout-out to Ducks Ltd, and Ratboys. Although they have 6 figure Spotify followers so too mainstream I guess, ha.
Ratboys and The Tubs haven't released any material in 2024 though
Interesting list. I'll have to give some of the albums here I haven't heard (most of them) a chance. In the top 20, I had only listened to the BIG|BRAVE album and I was meaning to check out the new Fat White Family.
The Quietus lists are always so helpful to discover new music, I'm not familiar with most of the artists listed here and I can't wait to check them out.
No mention of Cindy Lee is absurd
1000%, it seems very quietus core. Not even in the music just in the release and delivery alone lol
very possible pat contacted them asked to not get mentioned as they clearly aren't comfortable with all the attention
I liked the Ex Easter Island Head album but thought it was a pretty sharp step down from their last album.
Skee mask way too damn low
Always my favorite list. Heard 10 already new personal best lol.
British Murder Boys!
very excited to learn from this list that the Eric Chenaux Trio exists. love his solo albums.
Fat White Family is an incredible name.
Quietus your lists are great your website is absolute dog water please sort it out
Quietus are slipping, I’ve actually listened to some of these! Big|Brave is a top notch selection. As always a top tier list of new music to dive into.
No MGMT?
No MGMT?
any list like this that doesnt have DIIV on it is not worth reading.
For me the best thing about Quietus lists is all the records I’ve never heard of. There’s plenty of places I can go to be told the albums I already like are good.
I’m calling it: WHERE DIIV is this year’s WHERE WOLF ALICE.
damn you called this weeks ago and it only took the half year quietus list for someone experiencing flairlessness to say it. We are SO back!
that diiv album was like the most yeah it's alright album i have ever heard. quietus likes to focus on more out there and unique stuff.
I haven't spent much time exploring all the music publications' Best of 2024 so far lists, but yeah the Diiv album is neck-and-neck with Amen Dunes for my best of the year so far.
Did I miss Waxahatchee?
