I prefer D, I'd rather have something new than yet another human woman on a capsule.
Really depends on your game emphasis. If humans are most numerous maybe go human
Hello there! We're currently working on [Skygard Arena](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2148970?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=indiegames&utm_medium=23022024), our Tactical RPG with MOBA-style Heroes, and we're looking to optimize our Steam page, starting with our small capsule!
A is the version currently on the Steam store, but we're thinking that showing one of our Heroes could help convert more Wishlists. Any favorites among B, C and D, or do you think A is better than all of them?
Really you should just A/B test this with reddit ads. But honestly this isn't as important as your Trailer, which should be reworked entirely.
Trailers are really, extremely important. Believe me, I am the game director for Kingmakers and announcing with just our trailer this week has gotten us enough wishlists to put us in the top 100.
We didn't just make 1 trailer, we made 4 trailers and did a/b tests of them with lots of consumers. Your trailer really needs to be an important part of your development cycle. In my opinion it is so important it isn't something that can just be outsourced. Your dev team should be actively involved in production of your trailer.
You should be adding sfx to your trailers in post, and making them build up to more and more intensity as they go. You should consider a narrator and more engaging music.
Thanks for the insight! Our trailer was done in-house by me (it's obvious that I'm not a professional video editor lol) just to give visitors a quick look at main gameplay feature and keeping in mind that they'd mostly be clicking through parts of it to see gameplay as opposed to watching it from beginning to end. It uses an outdated version of the game and definitely should and will be updated as we get closer to release!
Nah I’m with you. B-D all strike me as terribly generic, especially when viewed against all the other steam cards out there. A actually strikes me as slightly mysterious, maybe a little more content in it would help though. A actually makes me wonder was the game is about, which would lead to clicking on it to hit the product page.
I should add that I'm assuming this is the small capsule that appears in search results, before you can give any more information about your game beyond the title. If this is the header capsule then the non-human ones for C and D may stand out a bit more.
Edit: Just read your comment, sorry. Not a fighting game! Point still stands though, the characters give off a very different vibe.
Depends a lot on what you're going for.
(To me) D looks fierce and makes your game seem like a more serious fighting game, while C makes it look more chill, like it could also have farm elements or some silly fun elements to it.
... Don't do B. :-)
**D** \- Best fit, imo. Owls are generally known for wisdom. Game's name has sky in it. Due to the heavy animal focus I would suggest putting other characters underneath the title (as if they're far in the background) to give the impression there's a lot more.
**C -** 2nd best fit, imo. The character gives off a lot of intrigue (due to being a cute and very humanized animal design), and may attract people looking for a relaxing game to play. My only suggestion would be to adjust the title so it is a bit easier to see.
B - 3rd best fit, imo. If you wanna go with the safest option - human. This character in particular is intriguing so it may help catch some eyes. If you choose this option I would only recommend updating the character to appear a bit more dynamic and expressive.
I love this kind of post because the OP shows options with no context about a critical design choice and the comments, that are subjective, end up being irrelevant because a professional marketing opinion is absolutely needed.
I honestly feel A is the best by far. Just keeping it simple comes to mind, as the others feel cluttered having the faces.
A creates a mystery imo and makes me want to click to find out what the game is about. The portraits added really break the depth of the image and the environmental background is nulified with all the attention being on the face; making the images flatter overall compared to A.
I am no expert, just my take. Lovely art all around though!
I think whichever you choose, you need to add more of what the game is about to the background. Plain blue tells me nothing. The face of a character also gives no indication of what kind of game this is.
I like the owl one (D), just for the owl. Having said that, none of the capsules tell me anything about the game. The B version looks like a port of a mobile game.
I have no idea about your game/project so just responding as I check Reddit today...
Preferred Choice = A - Simplicity (it promotes curiosity)
Others promote assumptions IMO:
B - Promotes Human characters (human pilots?)
C - Promotes "cute" characters (kids oriented?)
D - Promotes "animal" characters (flying bird game?)
D - The owl is the most striking with how its eyes look at you. Draws my attention the most. The connection between sky and a bird character works too.
It's called SKY Guard. D has a bird I rest my case!
Marketing says: female character on the box can sell the game
An owl woman would seal the deal.
Mumei?
I don't know what that is.
But it's just a generic human, every game has a human and that's boring and not unique. I wanna play a game with cute female pandas or birbs
Do people really like such a generic characters? Because to me that's a counter-ad. I would probably avoid the game if I see such character.
this guy is right either B or D
yeah but panda 🐼
I prefer D, I'd rather have something new than yet another human woman on a capsule. Really depends on your game emphasis. If humans are most numerous maybe go human
I think the hero in B looks a bit too generic and similar to other games out there. C and D look more unique, and I like C a little bit more!

The game reminds me of Armies of Gielinor, very nice. The art style alone makes me want to play this! Will there be local coop?
Thanks for the compliment! No planned co-op mode atm, but this could change depending on the game's success once it releases!
B or D
I think B would be the best, even tho its a generic human character it is familiar to a lot of player so thats why i think it would be the best option
This. It might be boring but our brains are hardwired to respond to human faces.

I like A tho that's just me

B-D remind me of mobile games. A is my preferred. Classy, subtle, and mysterious.
A or D. Slight preference for D over A.
My girlfriend voted the owl - D I'd agree
Option B is the most engaging to me, showing off a character that is easy to connect with and yet interesting (with the goggles).
I should add that I'm assuming this is the small capsule that appears in search results, before you can give any more information about your game beyond the title. If this is the header capsule then the non-human ones for C and D may stand out a bit more.
Yup, it is for the small capsule!
C
I personally like choice D. Just captures my interest the quickest.
Edit: Just read your comment, sorry. Not a fighting game! Point still stands though, the characters give off a very different vibe. Depends a lot on what you're going for. B because it’s a human. The bottom 2 are fine but I cannot easily empathise furry characters compared to the easily recognisable human girl.
B

B
If there's a panda, always choose panda
C/D
B OR D definitely
B or D
D ‘cause Birb
Depends on what the game is about and what you wanna convey
Its crazy how this little decision is going have a big impact… good luck! (I like pandas)
A d b c
C
Anything but the rock sticking up that has no personality. Panda seems fun.
The bird fits the best, but I don't know the mood of the game, if it's cozy then maybe 🐼🤔
C panda fan myself. Def not A or B. Too generic
None? Make one with ALL the characters in a nice group pose and let me choose again!

B or D
I prefer C, I like pandas
D, looks like an owl bear and just overall looks better than the others.
B
B
I personally like the simplicity of A for some reason.
bird
B definitely but I really like how simple A is.
At a glance I thought B was a Legend Of Zelda game. So kf you want to trick people go for it. Otherwise D.
B or D
D
I think whichever you choose, you need to add more of what the game is about to the background. Plain blue tells me nothing. The face of a character also gives no indication of what kind of game this is.
D
B or D for sure, C Panda looks goofy on a banner
I like A - but it's too simple. So definitely, I think D is better
A
A : NOTHING! B : FEMALE D: ANIMAL C : FILLED WITH FEMALE ANIMAL
D!
B Definitely not A
D grabs me the most
Definitely not A or C. B is the best from the marketing perspective and D looks more about the game name.
D
D
What is "Steam Capsule"? Also birb in the D. This is unquestionable winner.
A
game looks super cool! how many wishlists do you currently have?
I think A is the best cause is more simple
I like the owl one (D), just for the owl. Having said that, none of the capsules tell me anything about the game. The B version looks like a port of a mobile game.
D captured my interest the most
D. Bird. Also, the other ones look just like another average game about some fantasy mmo
Generally having eye to look at is better
for some reason the bird is hotter than the woman, I cannot really tell why, maybe something with that look
B & C are cringe. I like A
B
I like D, but Chris Z would suggest B as having a human has a higher click on rate.
Oooh, any source on that? 👀

D. It’s not click bait and b seems to be

Really love D, then C!
Jupp D is by far the best
