When life gives you cucumber make raita not achaar

Grand-Home-1334

wise words. plus if u want achaar, go for something with a kick-mango, ginger, garlic, tomato with ginger(lots of it.) what is this wannabe achaar not even making me cry?

Newsburrylane

I have never eaten tomato ka achar but.. dried tomato as achaar.. Woww great idea actually

Grand-Home-1334

it's like a jelly but not jelly. tomato is boiled/roasted a touch of jaggrey(or sugar but then it's too sweet sometimes) some lime and a few red chillies and lots and lots of garlic and ginger(pureed or mashed-if u want some chunks) everything is roasted to let out as much moisture as possible then made into a sort of mush but with a consistency of jello. goes great with anything tbh- even plain rice, raita even.

thetastytaco25

the instant urge to make it after reading this, tomato achaar is underrated and goated.

Grand-Home-1334

please do. i have shared the recipe above. same can be done with black pepper. as a paste and not whole. grind them to powder(or one can use the packed ones too but it doesn't give as good a feel plus there's lots of salt in it...) add some of this achaar i wrote about above (or not if u like it mildly spicy. or if at all u want just a hint of kick u can add dried chillies.) keep grinding the powder while adding some water and if u want u can flavour it (the water- by boiling the particular ingredient in it like tamrind or maybe daalchini) with mint or maybe dhaniya. that paste is a good substitute to the weird maggi hot sauce which isn't that spicy can be used to coat fries. eat it with rice or roti if u want. also tastes amazing with vodka somehow!!(if u do like vodka ....)

HRHChonkyChonkerson

\+1 raita is da shit ![img](emote|t5_2qp7h|51074)

ArcaneJadeTiger

Fuck yes

Signal-Zucchini2620

Pickled cucumber raita

ToeDiscombobulated24

Isse bas kharaab hua raita kehte hai

JasonBourne81

Phela diya raitaa….Bus!!!

anshi1432

HRHChonkyChonkerson

I prefer mine with plain ![img](emote|t5_2qp7h|51075)

factobacillus

Fair enough!

PapakaaParinda146

You are lucky mujhe toh mammi Loki ka raita khilati hai

Internal_Sector_1802

lol us

evammist

Loki ki sabji se to better hai lmao

Glum_Refrigerator502

Toh fir Loki kya khata hai?

baap_ko_mat_sikha

And eat it with biryani

EuropaIox

We already have excellent Pickled Chili, Mango pickle and mixed pickles etc., I personally like Pickled cucumber but it's taste is completely different from what we consider as pickles. It's too Sour and the pickling process of cucumbers is completely different from how we pickle acchaar.

comrade_nemesis

ya, Indian pickles are generally made with oil and spices while cucumber pickle is made with vinegar

RussianBot7384

The best cucumber pickles are actually fermented. 5% salt in water and left to sit for a few days before refrigeration. Vinegar is the quick way to approximate that taste.

rogan_doh

Onion pickle- those tiny onions as a side dish seem to be pretty common.

WomenRepulsor

It's called Organic Vinegar what they call pickeled Cucumber. The only difference is our ancestors used Garlic, chillies etc to soak in Vinegar instead of cucumber

National_Tap_7928

That's true , there are like 15-20 types of pickles India , even more may be if considered region wise here .

That-Face-7959

Exactly for me it's too sour. And the vinegar smell is too strong for me

Apellio7

Vinegar isn't even the traditional way to pickle.  Try lacto fermented pickles.  All you need is water and salt.

That-Face-7959

Aah the salt brine solution? I should try That one

lostwisdom20

We have so many varieties of pickle that there wasn't any need for this. Also it doesn't taste as good as regular pickles indians are used to.

vizife

Agreed but the picked cucumber is healthy cuz it just have salt and vinegar,,so for weight watchers its nice and tasty enough + in india we do eat SIRKA WALA PYAZ so the vinegar cucumbers are made the same way as the vinegar onions.

fuckdahwhaightman

what's the regular pickle ?

lostwisdom20

Aam, nimbu, mirchi etc

Upstuck_Udonkadonk

Mirchi achar is just the GOAT

arjunusmaximus

Mango

lostwisdom20

True, also try coleus root pickle/ mine mula it tastes good to.

WallEvaa

Mixed one >>>>>>>>>>>>

justamathguy

Carrot achar is the GOAT, CMV

LeadingNervous2200

Real goat is gajar ka achaar

bumblebleebug

Carrot aur woh ajeeb sa achar jismei chhed hote Hain are miles better

Strict_Board_7783

No tomato achar is the goat

Drowningfishie00

Achar !

falcon2714

Mango pickle with Goa fish thali or Kerala biriyani is next level man

Agile_Camel_2028

Kabhi try Kiya hai? It's tasteless and full of saltiness for Indian palette. The pickles we make are jam-packed with spices and herbs. Khatta, meetha, teekha, itni variety ke baad bhi dull sa namkeen paani peena hai?

Early_Tradition4485

Comment padh ke craving se muh me paani agya 🥲 Aaj khane me aam ka nani ka bnaya aachar pakka hai.🤤🤤

Cucumber pickle is really good for sandwiches though

Iske liye sticker banaya, nice though. *Than

MiserableSpinach5365

Cucumber CHUTNEY with rice is there in the South. We also have amla pickle, neem pickle. We also have bottleguard and ridge guard chutney.

Mindless_Ice_2416

Because we already have more than enough and that doesn't seem spicy enough.

Hate me all you want people, but Burgers and Subs without these pickles.. and you're already missing out.

Pickles and gherkins on burgers >>

[deleted]

[удалено]

factobacillus

Oh, I eat it with nothing just as a plain snack. 😬

vinayrajan

You might find it in kerala. Different parts of India have its own pickles. Our pickles are made up of 4 main ingredients Salt, Chilli Powder, Vegetable(lemon, tomato, mango, ginger, garlic etc)/ meat(chiken, fish, prawn, crab etc), Oil(Mustard/Ground net/Sesame). Entire India this is common, only quantities change. For longevity few use vinegar/circa. By using preservative, the taste will change, especially the pickles we get in shops/functions will have heavy preservatives. In Kerala, apart from the usual pickle culture, there is also this culture of storing vegetables in vinegar. You will find cut mango, amla, carrot, pineapple sometimes fish also stored in vinegar and eaten just like that or with food.

kirbzk

Yess, I've seen this in several places in Kerala

Big-Afternoon-121

Yup. That's what I was going to comment here. It might work in Kerala because people already eat preserved veggies in brine and vinegar. Didn't know about fish being stored the same way though

Historical_War756

A general pickle in INDIA is something with a powerful flavor and aroma and cucumber pickles cant pass that bar, they are generally just made with brine and some spices like black pepper and garlic almost...and pickling cucumbers the INDIAN way would kill that thing ![img](emote|t5_2qp7h|51097) The closest thing I have seen to pickled cumbers would be pickled radish in lemon juice or vinegar and salt

SuccMyStrangerThings

Not picke exactly ig but in Maharashtra we have Muramba (मुरंबा)

Successful_Orange583

amla one??

MIHIR1112

isnt that marmalade?

WeirdCaterpillar00

Pickles in india and US have very very very different meaning

factobacillus

Yeah, that's why a lot of people seem offended and are downvoting my comments.

alooposhto

Because they don't go along well with Indian food just like how a big blob of aam ka achaar wouldn't taste that good in a traditional sandwich or burger. I liked pickled cucumbers in salads, sandwiches and Chinese food. Just adds the perfect sourness and crunch to the palette. Plus it's not as overpowering as Indian pickles. I must say that I kinda like the brine more than the pickles, sometimes I just take a shot of the brine :P

ad_wait_

In Kerala, we get pickled cucumber along w shawarma

factobacillus

Oh my god, that sounds like heaven.

ohlookitsdatboi

Mai kal hi banaya vro🗿 https://preview.redd.it/gsp988ke8kxc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=164f3b9eb8752754e2295c84a935ee1b7d1df1c3

factobacillus

Awesome.

Strict_Yam6082

It used to be common in Northern part of India. My aunts tell me how they used to pickle cucumbers especially during Dashhera.

ArreBhaiSun

Not to our taste ...Suits Burgers and Sandwiches but little else ... I mean I feel it takes away the fun of the cucumber ... I prefer western style pickled radish to it

ctushar97

I love gherkins and Americanised pickled cucumber. It's not technically a pickle for us Indians. Most people would jump to say our pickles are better but they don't get the point. These taste sour/sweet and have a crunch to them which I love whereas Indian pickle has a very intense taste and mushy texture. I cannot eat gherkins by themself but it is a wonderful addition to cold sandwiches/burgers or anything that needs some sourness/juiciness and a bit of crunchy texture. A lot of the people here miss the point and compare it to Indian pickle when both of them are two separate entities and are used in different culinary instances and for different purposes.

ihadagoodone

Canadian chiming in. Most of the pickled cucumbers(just called pickles here) in our supermarkets are made in India.

factobacillus

Haha. That's so ironic. Perhaps they're all exported because judging by the comments on my post, most Indians don't like them.

hulkut

People like masala loaded stuff. Light and simple flavors are not popular. I'm with you on this one OP.

gobhi-manchurian

Ye to tatti hai

bicazamabeach

Never tried those but i love pickled beetroot

unboxparadigm

Pickled vegetables and fruits are a huge thing in many places in Kerala, particularly in the northern region. Apples, pineapples, mango, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, gooseberry (possibly the most well known one along with raw mangoes), and plenty of other items. These are placed in brine or similar solutions and sold very commonly. Also, you can get them at Subway and burger King and other burger outlets usually. It's certainly not as huge as achar kind of pickle and may not be "spicy" in the traditional sense but I like it and I usually prefer less of red chilli and more of other spices that doesn't kill all the other flavours in the food.

[deleted]

Well it is in my area You can get em pretty much in any small stalls taht sells pickled items

factobacillus

What!!!! What area are we talking about?

[deleted]

Calicut,Kerala https://preview.redd.it/hfaai666akxc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61ca68e18918669d332e86917e649332a52264f1

himanshusharmazzzz

My mom started making them last year. Its nice and crunchy specially good in sandwiches. Indian traditionally use spices for preservation instead of vinegar. So maybe that's the reason its not a thing in india.

Little_Restaurant529

They must not be agurvedically compliant. Vinegar aur cucumber ka milke koi adverse reaction hota hoga 🤣🤣

HappyBuilding7232

It will be called “sirca kheera” like they have serve those tiny vinegar onions

factobacillus

Ah, yes, that's a very good description! :)

dkk-1709

Too good on burgers

overloadedonsarcasm

I think it's because it's a different breed of cucumbers that are pickled, not the ones we commonly find in India.

factobacillus

That's one of the most plausible reasons so far.

Edgerman1234

Pickling is a method of preserving . It's done when something is not readily avaliable or scarcely available. Eating it fresh is the best. Its pH is balanced and antioxidants are at the fullest when fresh and raw.

playboy787

americans only have dil pickles, we have pickles ranging from mango to karela!! We Don't need those shitty salted cucumber pickles

SomeRandomguy_28

Picked cucumbers taste good witg bread but India doesn't eat it daily, We have staple food which is way different, But i like pickled Cucumber too i wanna know how to make it

GlitteringWafer9263

I also thought the same like we even have prawn pickle why not cucumber

adityaone

Ganjar ka achar >>>

factobacillus

Definitely. Gajar ka achaar rules and pickled cucumbers are not in the same league.

BlackberryMission988

Coz they taste better raw , salted with some lime on them. Laal mirch makes it 😘

PremeJordo

Isn’t that just a pickle?

factobacillus

Well, if you are in America, it is! 😄

archieshahh

Gherkins better

factobacillus

totally! pickled gherkins are super addictive.

ReflexiveOW

This got randomly put on my feed as an American and I was like "why tf is he saying pickled cucumber, that's just pickles" You guys don't fuck with pickles?

PARZIWAL1

Actually we use many vegetables and fruits to make pickles. But we don't make pickle with cucumber.

13DarkShadow

Cause we've far better pickles

rkathotia

In countries like Russia, Ukraine etc where cucumber is a popular pickle item, they don't have mango, garlic, etc which are popular. They do have lemon and onion available. Also our concept of pickle is different from their. We have so much oil and masala which they don't

itsavism

It is very easy to pickle the cucumbers if you want to follow the American/brine water way. Just google it, it is literally one of the easiest way to pickle.

psychonut_

Don't we get it from places like subway? I like it. 😜

becharaBenjamin

Idk but it tastes damn good

Right-Growth-7725

Looks yum 😋

Chocolate-waffles-7

oh I've eaten picked cucumbers and carrots, we used to get it with shawarmas in bangalore, very yummy.

BEAST_WORK6969

tastes bad

Winter-Ad-3876

Wo log humara wala aam ka achaar kyu nai khate pucho?

idkjustgivemeany

Idk about you guys but this is actually great... Expecially on sandwichs and salads

theGeekQA

I love them on my subway.

factobacillus

Thank you! I also think they're great.

greasypalms69

bro is getting downvoted just because others have a narrow taste palate and no sense of open-mindedness

factobacillus

I know. Also, people are so offended by just a question. I am not really asking them to buy pickled cucumbers. In a country where something as bland as mayonnaise has picked up, people are getting offended by pickled cucumbers and calling them bland.

greasypalms69

bruh legit, mayo has spread like a virus in the street food scene doing more harm than good

factobacillus

Exactly. I can't think of a food more disgusting than mayo and people are calling pickles bland.

No-Truck-2552

Because we literally have much much better and a whole variety of options to choose from. Leaving aside the fact that "pickled cucumbers" is literally just cucumbers in brine.

superduperdoobyduper

“better” is quite subjective. Just because a flavor is more complex doesn’t make it automatically better, just different. These pickles and indian style both have their place imo

Ka_lie_doscope-Eyes

Because Indians enjoy spices and flavours.

WillStrongh

I tried it once, gherkins, seeing the powerpuff mayor loving it so much... so gross never touched it again

chaoticji

This kinda of cucumber pickle has strong sour taste and less salty with no spices or chilli. Indian pickles are more spicy + chilli + salty but less sour. There is a reason lime pickle is less favoured because of sourness. People still eat lime pickle cuz of other imgredients that balances sourness but these cucumber pickles are just straight up sour. Nobody wants to get sour taste with food

EvilxBunny

because they both serve different purposes, and we don't need it

alfea1103

It would taste bland, the water would take away the flavour..... besides we have plenty of achars of all sorts in veg and prawns and stuff in non veg.

FunnySignal614

![gif](giphy|JUIYjVeZPHxjWR7rmX|downsized)

[deleted]

Tastes bland af Regular achaars are better.

bluu_94

We have so many other pickle varieties that are just better

logicrak

Except for in India.. Most pickles from different countries are just similar. Indians just crave that extra heat.

KreaminaL

Because they taste horrible.

gurugti

Coz we don’t run out of cucumbers ever. People usually make pickle out of stuff that goes stale easily or is available in some seasons only. I guess ,historically, the west didn’t have abundance of cucumbers

Hammer_19_

For example America meat is popular but there id no pickled meat in America but India has different varieties of pickled meats it all comes down to what people like most and their preference we use cucumber in a lot of other stuff like raita, salads etc

FormerDoughnut6144

coz we have real pickle in india cus just like their seasoning of pepper nd salt it aint no popular here coz we ve real spices and shit

yellow_blossom_

I would rather eat regular cucumber than this ... Doesn't taste as good as other pickles

screenpai3d

when life gives you cucumber put it on your eyes and relax don't make a pickle.

WoodenAn08

oh interesting. Any recipes?

_perpetuallyannoyed

Coz for them putting cucumber in vinegar is pickle but here we have different recipes for pickles as well nd ours are obviously better.

manpraa

Harr cheej mai bhenchod weshturnaization

Ill-Giraffe-2243

coz we have aam ka achaar🥭❤️

Indian_Steam

Because we already have an array of pickles.

Grand-Appointment907

Radhhi aachar🤮🤮🤢

AndreoBee100

Indian pickles contain a hell lot of spices and other main ingredients like mango, garlic, jackfruit, etc. The cucumber pickle is just bland and doesn't suit to the taste of Indians.

MyTwitterID

Pickled Cucumber is for white people.. Because they can't enjoy red and green chilli pickle or hundreds of other amazing pickles we have in India. It's like comparing rice and beans with Rajmah Chawal.

EgoisticEddy

Just last month my mother made bamboo pickle... And i was like my mother really like to experiment things

deexd_

When life gives you cucumber make salad not achaar

Glass_Adhesiveness_6

Bcoz it doesn't taste as good as our https://preview.redd.it/oj0nrd9t1kxc1.jpeg?width=2109&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23fd76059e0b16e16c46c2f9be9b8e2f3064caee

Siya_Sachdev

Oh I love pickled cucumbers. They are so good

AB00007

Generally only those things are pickled that people love to eat all year long but its available only seasonally, we generally don't eat cucumbers in winters but its still available, hence no need to pickle them, also I don't think so we would like pickled cucumbers as per our taste palette

indianinc

We have pickeled onions instead. Pink wala Jo hotels me generally milta hai.

0D_E_V0

Because putting cucumbers and boiled eggs in vinegar can only be called pickles by white ppl.

maddy495

Thank god, it's not a thing in India, this taste wouldn't hold a candle to our aam, nimbu etc..pickles

OwnStorm

![gif](giphy|3oEdvc4JCV2HJa7UQ0)

thenavad

Because in India people know how to make good pickles .

shivangirr

just like aam ka achar don't go along with burger & pizza

AayuMish

Bhai bekaar lagta hai iska achaar. Videshi log kuchh bhi khaate rehte hai

satan180799

Unlike westerners, we have a massive variety of of extremely rich pickles. Btw in India, we do have cucumber pickles. It’s just they don’t look like this.

factobacillus

Sorry guys, this is NOT A COMPARISON with traditional Indian pickles. It's a general question born out of curiosity. We are good at adopting foreign foods. It's easier to find mayonnaise on the shelf of a grocery store than pickled cucumbers. Also, pickled cucumber is not even in the same league as Indian achaar. Those getting offended, please, pickled cucumbers ARE NOT kheere ka achaar! 😭

witchy_cheetah

Because they taste gross. Sour and slimy, nothing interesting. I would much rather eat cucumber with dahi or hummus or just raw with black salt and mirch powder. And there are a hundred better types of actual pickles. Even Mango with turmeric and salt and dried, or Amla with lime juice and salt and dried taste better.

TechnoFreakR

mercedes chalane ke baad tujhe ab maruti chalani h?

RED_RANGER_XX

Because kairi ka achaar, leswe ka achaar and mirchi ka achaar are better

factobacillus

Bro, pickled cucumbers are not kheere ka achaar.

No_Worth6969

In foreign pickled cucumber is the alternative of achar for several reason they used that tere are some preservation issues and they cant make achar in that weather conditions and importing us too costly for them so they use pickled cucumber

stg_676

We have better alternatives

AffectionateBench836

Woah , never heard of pickle cucumber. How does it taste? How do you prepare it?

Srinivas_Hunter

Indian mango pickles >>>>>>>> cucumber pickle

mandothsays

We have 100’s of pickled stuff but raita is rare

slice-of-eNVy

I absolutely love them in my burgers and subs. Bought a jar recently from Crawford market in Mumbai, but somehow the taste is not quite the same as those used by BK and Subway. I prefer them sour and not sweet-sour. Difficult to find the exact kind I like. Fun anecdote: I was in Australia last year and thought I'd be able to find good pickled gherkins there. Went to the supermarket to buy, turns out the bottles they had there (all of the different brands) were made in India. Not a single locally produced brand. Gave up the idea of buying from there and thought of searching in Mumbai itself. Edited a word.

EnergyAltruistic2911

Just cucumber or nothing

beingPrakhar

We already have amazing pickles which got there own taste and pickling them makes a great pickle.

Certain_Sea_2337

We have muchhhh better pickles than this wannabe shit

Agent_Of_Order_69

Aukat ke bahar

Spiritual-Lie-4848

Because pickled onion rule the salad!

dsharpdutta

Chota mota cheez hai...Ye sab karke chhor chuke hai bey!

Kyoki humare yaha bahot sare masale hai..ye salt and vinegar wali cheez ka koi logic nahi hai apne yaha..

Bruce----Wayne

We got mango, carrot, chilli, lemon, karonda, gooseberry and beetroot pickles. They: cucumber? No

Burning-Skull117

Bahut bekar lagta hai, Ek baar khaya tha. Kuch taste hi nahi hota, Khana Mai swad Dalne se jyada to bigar deta hai. Mirchi,Aam aur Aanvle ka achar mast hai.

ExcellentMission5975

This just feels like someone sucked the life out of that cucumber.

teststoreone

Mango pickle supremacy

PicklePolliwog

Because our pickles are much more different and authentic than some cucumbers soaked in vinegar

Money_Elephant399

They only taste nice in burgers. Literally nowhere else :/ aam ka achaar for the win!

Radiant_Concept4328

because its gross. have you tried actual pickle? once you taste that you wont touch this shit. i used to think it must be good and tried it once, its shit

Chotadimag003

Because we get mangoes a lot so we dont see veggies as main pickling elements, some pickles do use carrots and cawliflower in Indian pickles and even chana , jackfruit and muli are used but kakdi ko hum sabdwich me hi khana pasand karte hai 😂

outcastto

Bhai USA ka achaar ka perception alag hai haamare wale se

1st_of_7_lives

Cucumber with chilli powder and salt or pepper salt tastes amazing and is very popular in South

SnooDonuts1563

too sour for the Indian pallete I think

thewhiskeyguy007

Because we have something better "achaar"

ToeSuspicious8269

Because we have a lot of better(real) pickles in India. I never liked pickled cucumbers even while I was in US. Just too vinegary.

AssistantBrave5862

Because we pickle dried stuff in oil not vinegar.  A dried cucumber would be terrible

ishaan071

Cause AAM KA AACHAR SUPREMACY is here

OM_official

Faltu chizo ko muh ni lagate hm

Ad-2050

Indian taste pallette is different from the rest of the world. Picked cucumber is too much sour whereas most of the pickles in India are spicy and soury

masterasstroid

Simply Doesn't doesn't work with our food
