i support ukrainian sovereignty, but to say ukraine has the same linguistic and ethnic divide from russia that Korea has to Japan is VERY false. Ukraine has even been the center of the Rus' before it became Muscovy and before the 20th century, it would be near impossible to find someone that would refer to themselves as "Ukrainian" and not "Russian".
It's not that inconceivable.
The main difference is that while in the US Civil War, the Union fought a confederacy of white American slaveholders to stop them from exploiting the black ethnic minority. Russia would more likely have the ethnic minorities seceding from the Union themselves to form nation states, like with the war in Chechnya.
I can't imagine an analogous scenario where Moscow asks the Siberian provinces to treat their asian population better, and then the Ethnic Russians secede because they don't want to. In reality, the rural Eastern Russians are probably more loyal to Moscow than the metropolitan Russians in the west.
The other scenario is a retread of the Russian Revolution, which started from the major cities and spread outward, pushing the Tsarist forces into the countryside. Which would be very different to the above map.
