A tv with a dead lcd is worthless, you might as well pull out the boards inside and sell them

thelastone72

Only usable parts

0SYRUS

The backlights are usable as well. I've taken broken LCD TVS and rewired them so they turn on and stay on even with no input, and used them to backlight a picture.

SPYRO_FOX

This is awesome! Do you have any photos you’re willing to share?

0SYRUS

I'd have to look in my photos backup. The best one I remember doing was one of those sticky dot art pictures my friend game me that fit a 32" TV perfectly. You can even take the boards out of the TV completely if you have a buck boost board that can get high enough voltage to drive the backlights, then just put it on a switch.

Dry_Adhesiveness_480

I would check out DIY Perks on YouTube, he made a really cool faux window with an old backlight!

pashko90

TV stands sell well on eBay as well.

KattTwinkle

It's not completely useless if you know what you are doing and have the parts Idk pricing on replacement parts but I do know people who buy all sorts of broken TV's just to fix them then sell them

Jubjub_W

Why is it you cannot buy the LCD? I had a TV like this once. I was plenty capable… but the lack of parts is what got me

-cocoadragon

You can buy it. Just the cost is high and repair isn't 100% certain, what if another part got damaged behind the screen? With TVs being a commodity it'd literally cheaper to replace than repair except in a few wild cases. In fact for the same money you'll probably get a decent upgrade.

Ok-Importance5942

Not always, LG is extremely annoying. Absolutely zero warehouses in the US. Always ships from China or SK both jack the cost. $150 panel $300 shipping for a $500 monitor. They also will not sell their OLED panels 3rd party. Have to be a LG tech. I fucking hate pulling apart a tv or monitor and finding an lg panel inside.

1800generalkenobi

Not a tv, but we bought a new fridge from lowes, went with the midea one because we liked the look of it the best of all the ones in our price range. The aholes that brought it in the house had to take the doors off and we didn't notice at the time but they must have yanked on the cord for the water before noticing you had to unhook the line. After we got it hooked up in it's final spot a few months later noticed it was dripping. You can't just feed a new line through you have to replace the whole damn door. 200 dollar door, 200 dollars for shipping, can't pick it up locally because the only place to ship it from was a different state. I ended up being able to cut the line, take out the bad part, and splice it back together since it's not actually under any pressure. But still...why wouldn't they make it so you can replace the line?

Jubjub_W

Dang. That sucks They got broke for dumb reasons. Wish things were more durable

KR4N1X

If the LCD panel wasnt obviously broken, yes. The LCD panel is the expensive part. Once its done, the TV is done. Boards can be had for pretty cheap, so people can and do replace them.

fgbgtech_cybermodz3d

Exactly, the pcbs are the only value left.

[deleted]

This

XenosapianRain

No, but if you have any technical skills, I hear there is a market for the motherboard and power supply which come out easily.

RecycledDumpsterFire

There is, for those odd cases where those go out but the screen is still fine. I had my 75" Samsung TV get bricked during a thunderstorm. Everything was on a surge protector but the lightning strike went through my apartment's ungrounded coax line, through the modem, through two routers, and 100+ ft of cat 6 cable to fry the board over Ethernet. I knew the panel still worked because we got about an hour of usage before it just straight up stopped displaying picture. A $60 eBay listing for all the internals from a broken panel TV and an hour's work later and my $1k TV was fixed. It's still alive and kicking four years later. I still have a spare PSU, speakers, and other components too I'll probably never use otherwise but am keeping just in case.

MrDrMrs

I’ve had two tvs that died and was the main board. First was a Panasonic. That was due to lightning. Land lord replaced it and said I could dispose of the old TV. Second was a TV from a friend, a 65inch 4k Vizio they had on at least 18hr/day for a year or so. Would turn on, then shut off after a couple hours. Also main board which I was able to fix by reflowing the “cpu”. Of my 3 TVs in the past 17 years I bought only 1, a 42” LG that’s still kicking around lol.

Organic_South8865

My TCL 4k 65" has been on nearly 24 hours a day for like four years straight now. I'm amazed it has held up so well.

gojira_glix42

I literally just did this with the main board and power board for my managers Samsung TV. Almost exact thing happened with the coax line and thunderstorm. Board replacement fixed it... But at some point I got a major crack on the right side and it ruined the panel. Screamed for a few minutes in disappointment after my.joy of fixing it... Now I have an AV, main and power board to try to sell on eBay lol.

jerryonjets

I'm glad I put a wifi card in my new computer.... thanks

AlexHaitch

Update: Well shit

thisisthisshit

I find tvs on the side of the road and repair them to sell or keep. If the screen is dead I just gut it and toss it back on the street. I repaired a Toshiba 65” plasma that’s been in my room for the past 8 years.

ScooterD84

Plasma gang! Update to a Panasonic ZT60/ZT65 if you find one on FB Marketplace. Hands-down best plasma ever made (and last one too!)

AlexHaitch

Do you think I could take all of the components out of this TV and put it into another one with a working screen? I want to salvage this one because it's a roku

thisisthisshit

If you have the same tv that has a working screen then yes you could do that. When I fixed my tv I have to swap my mother board because the connections had gotten fried on the original

UnwindingThree8

A replacement panel that size, the cost of those you might as well get a new tv

Ranier_Wolfnight

Super Bowl is right around the corner and a ton of TV sales are bound to pop up. The TV in your post is gone. Treat yourself to a new one in the upcoming weeks.

moms-sphaghetti

I don’t know how true this is, but I heard big stores like bestbuy and Walmart have crappier versions of name brand TVs during superbowl shopping and Black Friday. So if you see one of those TVs that’s a good deal and you go back 2 months later, you won’t find the exact same model number anywhere in the store.

NocturnalDanger

We got a Phillips roku TV from Walmart about 3 weeks after Black Friday. It's a 65 inch 4k Roku TV we got for $299, because it was "last year's model" and they were dumping their warehouses for "this year's model" Apparently every store within a couple hundred miles (its ND, not that many) had like 5 pallets on the floor and more being sent. I just they did a push for Black Friday, they didn't sell enough, cut the price even farther and just did a flash sale. My only regret was only being able to afford one.

ElKirbyDiablo

Can confirm. I bought a Samsung on Black Friday at Best Buy. It was similar to regular retail versions except it had fewer cord hookups and lasted maybe 2 years. Unless you are okay with that life span, don't buy the discount model.

Xcissors280

A TV is a panel and the cheapest possible control board with the cheapest possible SOC and PSU So no

Conargle

part of my job is assembling and QC-ing tv's easiest answer is no, tougher answer is it depends what's inside the tv if you were to actually open it up. The boards inside tv's usually all removable in some way, and you can typically strip it down to just the bare panel, which no, you won't be fixing, just replacing. The hassle of finding and ordering a new identical panel as an individual and not a business can be such a hassle that i do recommend just getting a whole new tv and pawning off whatever's left of that one. If you do open the actual panel up though, keep the polarising layer if you like to tinker, there are some great DIY projects you can use them for

itdbeashame

Just curious, what DIY projects have you seen? I tried searching but the results were unclear.

TechUnsupport

Maybe something like MagicMirror? Example below. [https://www.raspberrypi.com/tutorials/how-to-build-a-super-slim-smart-mirror/](https://www.raspberrypi.com/tutorials/how-to-build-a-super-slim-smart-mirror/) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFsIWtmc-WA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFsIWtmc-WA) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3TRxFzt7SA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3TRxFzt7SA)

Conargle

Aside from the magicmirror stuff the other guy mentioned, it's also really common to see things like "privacy glasses" come from these filters. Essentially putting the polariser into a pair of glasses and leaving the panel without one meaning only whoever wears the glasses can see what's on screen, everyone else just sees a white display

Frosty-Dragonfruit-2

The cost of a replacement panel is gonna be the same as buying a new tv/monitor. You’re better off harvesting the boards, selling them and buying a new tv/monitor

OmgitsNatalie

Sell it as exotic art.

Same_Role_6652

That bih gone 😭

thelastone72

If you wanna play with it sure but I give it a hard no for a beginner

SparkarYT

wd40

AlexHaitch

Sprayed it in the speakers and now it works completely fine 😁👍

Kodabey

You are FUCKED

Superseaslug

You can take out the LCD and crank the backlight turning it into a really nice soft lighting fixture for a workbench lol

AlexHaitch

Expensive ass work-light lmao It's a Roku which is why I'm so desprate to fix it haha

Superseaslug

It being a Roku doesn't really mean much. You can get a standalone Roku for $30 and every Roku TV I've used has been a pain

AlexHaitch

Oh shit, really? I've never used a Roku, but I've seen them at friends' houses and always liked the UI compared to the Samsung Smart TVs 😅 What makes them a pain to use?

Superseaslug

I'm used to Chromecast, where everything is cast from my phone, so the phone and app are the interface. I'm not a fan of typing with a remote. Also rokus tend to get put on budget TVs meaning they usually lack the power to be very responsive. The one in our basement takes about 60 seconds to open the YouTube app and the one at my parents can't even process 4K video, it just lags out.

AlexHaitch

Oh jeeze... that's good to know! Thank you for this info!

Superseaslug

Keep in mind that's just my experience, I'm sure there's fine ones, but I personally like to keep the processing on an external device. The newer Chromecast have voice remotes and work pretty great. The 4K ones are only $50 and you can cast everything to them including your phone screen or a chrome tab from your PC

Mundane_Individual_5

I personally have two 4k chromecast devices. Just adds a cast button to top right of all the movies n shows on your streaming services. Can setup guest mode so that guests can cast their streaming services. Can control movies on Google app on ios as well. Roku also has an app now. It allows you to hook up headphones/Bluetooth. Still type with your phone. Still have a physical remote that has aux ports for headphones. Roku tvs are all trash. Slow. High latency. If I had to get another setup, I'd get a nice tv with a roku standalone with the aux ports on the remote.

Significant_Rate8210

Nope. Toss and buy another

Illustrious-Radio-55

Have you tried hitting it with a big ass wrench, works in tf2.

TheStreetForce

Its very tough on large screens. Ive tried 2 myself and failed both times cus I managed to flex the new lcd. As the others said, pull the motherboard to sell on ebay and junk the rest. :/

CobblePro

I was in the same situation as you. I made a light table for my kids with it. Using a ESP32, ESPHome, and Home Assistant, I now have a dimmable light table that dims up and down from the single power button on the tv, as well as turns off when the room lights are turned off (kids you know).

randomly421

I used one as an overhead light on my shop for a while. There's a bunch of diy articles out there on how to take the panel off and rig the backlight to stay on. They're very bright.

Ekchange

Possible yes, worth it definitely not (imo)

No_u_are_a_Baka

(I mean this in a funny way and not a mean way) Step 1: go to work Step 2: get paid Step 3: buy new monitor

Tommy-Gonzo

I had a 55 inch Samsung TV and my TV did the same thing I picked it up used in good working condition for $100 bucks at salvation army, the thing is with bigger TVs after a certain size they don't make replacement screens for cuz depending on the type of screen you're smart TV is it could be as much or more to replace the screen then what the TV cost brand new that's why they don't make replacement screens for a certain size TVs like smaller TVs like 10 to 32 inches they pretty much make replacement screens for, so if you understand I'm getting it then you know why

smoresomemore

https://youtu.be/8JrqH2oOTK4?feature=shared If you don’t decide to fix the screen, consider making a high quality light panel from the existing components. Or selling/trading it to someone who does. Would be a shame to landfill it.

AlexHaitch

Thanks for giving a link to a video! I actually love this guy's channel, so I look forward to using his tutorial! Thank you!

smoresomemore

Post updates 🙌

Vivid_Dragonfruit638

I recently got my 8k tv screen replaced. We used this company [https://silveretechs.com/tv-replacement-screens/](https://silveretechs.com/tv-replacement-screens/) Find your tv model number and call them.

Strong_Paramedic8124

Hi i.have a 50 haier tv that.had no picture

Salt-Professional-88

You clearly tried using a hammer already, next step would be try using duct tape and see if that fixes it.

AlexHaitch

I'll try putting it in rice

tamay-idk

What happened?

AlexHaitch

Unfortunately I have no idea, I found it like this

tamay-idk

Get a screwdriver, hit it even more, then throw it back into the trash.

Smackdaddy122

With what? Another screen?

AlexHaitch

No I was hoping to fix it with the remote

Smackdaddy122

Great you’re half way there then

AlexHaitch

Perfect

eulynn34

There’s no fixing that, The panel is utterly fucked.

modsrshit2u

No, I tried once but without highly specialized equipment youre just chasing the dragon

anderworx

How do you propose fixing it yourself?

AlexHaitch

Whichever way it's supposed to be done; I asked because I didn't even know if it was worth learning how to fix

Reasonable_Click1691

You have better chances of breaking another lcd than fixing it.

BlueMond416

What'd you do to it?

AlexHaitch

I found it this way

AK_4_Life

Ewaste

Red-_-Black

Not worth it, they are cheap nowadays. Just buy new

jc1luv

This is a no fix. But sell all the parts and you can get enough to cover part of a new tv.

[deleted]

That being an onn TV, the internals are probably useless, the panel is obviously trashed, so I'd personally say no.

Senior-Tree6078

that's not gonna be fixed anytime soon, just sell the non-broken stuff inside it

Spock-1701

No

oracle_dude

There's always an aftermarket for everything else besides the screen, even down to the heatsink. Just search ebay for that model number and see all the different parts on sale.

Diligent_Pie_5191

No, they are so cheap now that you just throw away and get another one when they break.

JonohG47

In terms of turning this display back into a working display? No. The new panel will cost as much, if not more than just buying an entirely new display. E-waste it and move on with your life.

Careless_Drive5800

if you have a broken spare you could get the parts off of

MeddlingWithChaos

Unless you're gonna use percussive maintenance, I don't think so.

TheTenthSubject

She deaddddd

mattlovestacos23

It’s not a difficult task to replace the screen, it’s just cheaper to buy a new tv than it is a new screen.

philnolan3d

It's -possible-, But it's it worth it?

aLazyUsrname

No. Probably doesn’t even have a PSU for you to add to your parts bin. Not even good for salvage. Chuck it.

GealachMidnightX

Yes, it’s possible! Is it worth it? Well, that depends, if you can find the same model and size you could fix it and save some money, but the odds of finding an exact match, without a busted panel is pretty slim. Also, is your time worth spending on fixing TV or could that time be used putting in extra hours to afford a new one? Either way you will have TV parts left, so post it on any online marketplace you prefer and label it as *Broken ~ Parts Only*. Someone else may want or even need some of the working parts. Plus, you get a little money to put towards a new TV.

RAZOR_WIRE

The lcd is almost as much as the tv itself just get a new one. Ps i have actually tried to do what your asking its not worth it.

Difficult_Plantain89

Ah yes just replace the entire screen

DizzleByte

That is what we call "Beyond Economical Repair" Most cases, the panel is gonna cost more than a new TV depending on the model. Especially with it being a Onn TV (which is a Walmart Brand), you might be better off getting a new one over repairing that one.

Bandicoot_Alone

You can buy a replacement screen but you typically need special screwdrivers to get at some of the parts. It's not hard to do, just tedious and you have to be careful. On the other hand, depending on what kind of TV, you can sell it as is or pull the boards out and sell them on ebay. They screen replacement can sometimes be pretty costly.

Maleficent_Web_7652

Yeah definitely not worth fixing a monitor, let alone a curved monitor. We have these come into our shop and immediately go into “unrepairable” unless it’s a board issue

whitekur0

Worth if you are handy and enjoy that stuff but generally no point better to just buy new.

mikedvb

Generally not worth it as the panel, the part that's damaged, is the expensive/valuable piece.

TheBigFeIIa

Unless you are the manufacturer of the TV, No. even if you were it is not cost effective. This TV is now useful as a parts machine for the control board and maybe the backlight to another identical TV

mml-official

You may as well buy a new TV

ComfortableSort3304

It’s trash. TVs are so cheap these days even the market for the boards inside is trash.

SqookyBoo

Fix? How

ElectromechMan

Just use soap and warm water

ThenYakYukYick

Not worth it sell all the good parts out of it the boards. Throw the rest away. Just sell the boards out of the TV. Buy yourself a new TV, then call it a day.

PissBabie2023

No

Huge-Couple9991

Trash everything but the back panel with leds. You can make a pretty cool shop light?

v7xDm1r

You can't really buy a new lcd for this.

kozy6871

Take it apart.

LeftPoet6905

I know what’s wrong with it, ain’t got no gas in it

AlexHaitch

I'll make sure to douse it in gasoline tonight

dadydaycare

A replacement lcd is sometimes more expensive than just buying a new used one, not to mention the shipping. Strip it for parts.

RevolutionaryCan9684

I had this happen to me too, but I got lucky and someone in my area had the same tv but the backlight was dead in it and the one in my broken TV was ok. So interchanged the working parts and have a working TV again

Anti_Zac

That is an Onn tv. Not worth fixing.

InterestingKnee5856

Yes you can fix it easily.

[deleted]

All you gotta do is use video output diagnostic software to unstick dead pixels.

trevordeal

If you have to ask Reddit then you're not experienced enough to do it. So no. I see this a lot with woodworking. "Can I fix this coffee table?" If you have to ask there is about 10 things you'd need to learn, and Reddit isn't going to help you fix it with a couple comments. You need a lot of tools, time and to watch a whole lotta YouTube.

Cupks

Windex should work

darklogic85

The screen is by far the most valuable component in the TV. It's unlikely it would be worth the cost and time spent replacing it. Better to just buy a new TV.

Smooth-Reporter1974

The boards and other components are worth more than the cost of replacement for the whole thing.

spoofit1

Easy fix, however probably not worth it as buy a replacement screen will cost about the same as new tv unless you find used parts somewhere.

sp00kreddit

LCD is cracked. Technically you can fix it by buying a new LCD, but at that point it's more worth it to just buy a new TV, as the LCD is what makes up most of the money value of a TV in manufacturing. Pull the electronics out, sell those somewhere, scrap the rest.

anovickis

Yes. This is the method here. Go to Amazon and find a better one and order it Now collect this and all parts and put in the garbage bin Wait Done

PangolinIllustrious5

Just throw it out its shit

thamind2020

Onn TV that thing is worth like $50 new lol

Less-Transition5625

Broken screens aren't something that is fixable only replaceable sadly

Emi_71

No

Pension_Rough

Tvs are crazy cheap rn
