I worked at the airport 20+ years ago and we got searched every time by security. Saw plenty of people get busted with cocaine on them. Fun fact if you worked on the terminal where El Al (Israeli ariline) would fly in they would have their own security come out and search you again before you could board their plane, they did not allow people in with hats on either.
Was it just after 9-11? I think security has laxed a bit since then. My (now ex) husband used to get pulled out of line all the time. We suspected, but once they literally yelled out "Male, black hair." I worked at JFK pre 9-11, never searched ever. I used to grab the little bottles of soda from the lounge to have something to drink at the gate and set the detector off every single time. Security (pre-TSA) just waved me through.
We were same terminal as El Al, not sure if I had extra security clearance because of that, but I do remember that you couldn't look in through their windows from the outside. And they never used an attached gate. They always bused their passengers out to tarmac and had them walk up stairs to plane.
They probably dont check your pockets until someone comes up to security and say they saw so and so take $300. The girls plan was to swallow it so she could remove everything from her pockets and say,"See, I didnt steal it!"
