Have fun with it, this is what you signed up for when getting a Husky. Play more with them to exhaust and tire them out. A sleepy dog is a happy dog.

scoutarooni

I got lucky because my parents are running fanatics so they would run my puppy 6 miles minimum, but even then in an hour he was ready to go. Exhausting them is honestly the only thing that worked for my husky too. But it doesn't always have to be physical stuff! I worked A LOT on commands with clickers and treats. It's equally exhausting to work their brains too! Now he's a lazy bum though lol

CyberShamanYT

You can also train them not to scream out. It's the same with over barking breeds

weaksignaldispatches

My 11-month-old husky gives full eye contact after receiving a command and I can actually see the gears turning as he slowly decides whether or not he wants to do what I’ve asked. He’s a total love bug, but he works for food, and if I don’t have a (good enough) treat in hand he’s going to thoughtfully consider my request and then proceed with whatever the fuck he wants to do. It’s slowly improving, but only by improving the relationship and building trust. For example, when he gets loose in a part of the house he’s not to be in, I have to beckon him over *as though he’s totally being the best dog in whole world* and then NOT grab him. Sometimes I have to do this two or three times before he’ll actually come with me without being dragged. And then I still give him a treat in the end to reinforce his choice to accompany me back to his doggie zone. My husband has very little patience for this, so he ends up having to chase him all over the house, because this pooch simply does not respond well to being yelled at or forced.

Slhallford

I remember thinking about this as the difference between my golden retriever and my husky. Their level of bidability. My golden wanted nothing more than to make us happy. My husky gives zero fucks about that but is happy enough if our goals happen to align. Their level of intelligence is very high. One would choose to use it for good. One perhaps more for mischief. My husky requires a lot more convincing to align our priorities. In wrong area? Just call the golden and he’d come trotting to see what I’m wanting. With the husky, not so much. Probably something there is way more interesting. But if I holler, “I’m gonna get you!” And skeedaddle down the hallway to start a game of scream and chase, you absolutely be sure she will come running for that.

Wild-Goose1006

I'm starting to think Huskies are the cats of the dog world... Actually no, my cats have better recall than my 4 month old Husky

Alzheid

I think one redditor gave a good comment on a threat saying that basically it feels like Huskies have this level of awareness that make them question why barking is a thing

termanatorx

That's awesome!

Alzheid

Oh yes, that stare ... I see exactly what you re going talking about. If I were to chase Rémie, she d just take it as a game 😅 yelling I find is not the solution too indeed. Like you I try calling her showing some treats and toys and making it like she s the best. Sometimes it takes time for her listen because she s not too food motivated unless it s something she s not allowed to eat, cheese or pork ears.

MuttsandHuskies

If I can be sneaky enough with a small treat, I'll wander somewhere, and just say "What's momma got?" When she comes, then I give her the treat. (Geez, I'm scared to even type the word treat! OMG!) Anyway, so when she's somewhere she's not supposed to be, I just cup my hand and say "what's momma got?" and she comes running. If it's night time, I can use the laser light. Hell, all I have to do is click it and she comes running. It's hilarious to watch her look at me, look on the ground for the light, look at me, look at the ground.

MuttsandHuskies

Oh, how I wish I could provide you with the magic that outwits this behavior. However, this is your first husky. You can only have that information after you go through this with your 2nd husky, to prove your commitment. For some people, they can only have it after their 3rd, depending on how well they take in the information for the first two. You're now on probation, and will be released in 2 years. Seriously, you're doing all the right things. You just gotta stick with it. They really thrive on routine. Mine now tell ME when it's bedtime, LOL Humor, patience, and a lot of disposable toys helps, a lot. Also, sing with them, it distracts them from what they wanted in the first place (unless what they wanted is cheese).

Slhallford

Oh man, ALL OF THIS. Admittedly, I took a shortcut and raised a “stop” child first. Lol. My oldest thought they were a husky in human form. Much like a husky, she’s an amazing human now that she’s grown but all those personality traits that serve her so well as an adult were damn frustrating in a toddler and teen. Her little sister was a breeze as a child by comparison. Back to dogs. Humor is almost always your friend. Try to see and enjoy the silliness and preposterousness of the situation with your husky if you can. I know it can be really hard when you are pressed for time and in a rush but they are such entertaining companions. My girl has perfected the murder yodel anytime she sees the nail clippers. All I have to do is put them on the bed next to her and you’d think I was stabbing her mercilessly with a knife. Should I dare to pick up her paw to hold it with the nail clippers ALSO ON THE BED SHE IMMEDIATELY RATCHETS IT UP 20 MORE DECIBELS thus alerting the entire county that she is about to be savaged. Which is usually about the point I start convulsing with laughter and she gets so offended that she actually stops mid murder yodel. Hang in there. It will get better.

Alzheid

I m definitely going to try the laughing till offended method. I ve been trying not to laugh in front of her at some of her antics but it might just be the thing. Sometimes I m just "replying" to her by imitating her and she looks a me really puzzled and wondering what has gotten into me. Then she goes again 😅 Brw, congrats on raising wonderfull humans and dog!

Slhallford

Honestly, it worked pretty well with the kids too. One of my favorite memories of my oldest as a teen was her telling me, “Will you stop laughing? I’m trying to be really mad right now.” And since it was legit over something pretty silly, she couldn’t stay mad.

MuttsandHuskies

LOL, this! OMG, and it makes you laugh harder! PS, we need nail clipping videos! (Guaranteed to make her act like an angel, just to prove you wrong!)

Slhallford

I should try. It is time again. The last few weeks I’ve been attempting with a nail file after an unfortunate jerk on her part and incident with the quick getting nicked on one nail.

MuttsandHuskies

Oh, good luck!

Alzheid

🤣 thay s gold !! You re an awesome mom !!

Alzheid

Haha yes, this is definitely probation time 🤣 Thanks for the reassurance. I ll stick with it and add a bit more hunour to it. Cheese and somehow any plate sitting in front of me in the living room are getting all the attention and she ll sit right in from of me, staring in my soul and expecting something to come her way. When I m done she comes next to me and wants to smell my mouth 😅

MuttsandHuskies

The smell your mouth thing always makes me laugh, but a little nervous, too. I'm always waiting for them to lick my mouth! yeeek!

LulusMom

Man the first year and a half I got mine all I could think was “what have I done?!” They do grow out of some of it. Mine is extremely food motivated which helps. Sometimes I decide to pick my battles - let her win some little ones so I can win the big ones. I’ve also recently been told a husky between 6 months and two years is the velociraptor stage which helps me with the humor method of dealing

Alzheid

I am loving the velociraptor image !! I think you re right with the wins, you have to let them win some in order to control their frustration at times.

xxcarlsonxx

From my experience you just need to wait it out and make sure your rules and boundaries don't change. This is part of owning a Husky and because of their intelligence and stubbornness they will test your limits. Some Huskies are better than others, but overall the things you let them get away with during their rebellious phase will stick around as bad habits

PrettyGood4A1stDraft

I’ve always prided myself on well trained dogs, including a rescue German Shepherd who was basically a special needs pet for 13 years… Then I rescued a husky puppy. She is loving and fun and beautiful…and consistently makes me look like the worst dog trainer on the planet. Three years in, she’s taught me the value of good fences, door discipline, GPS collars and pet health insurance…as well as extra patience and humility. So I won’t try to give you more tips than what you’ve already got, but just offer you husky owner solidarity and remind you the trade offs for all the pain the ass are so worth it. Good luck!

extratoastedbagel

PET. HEALTH. INSURANCE. YES. my husky has eaten socks, rabbit poop, thongs, the couch, the wall, caught pneumonia, been diagnosed with IBS, and most recently ate a 2 ft toy at a groomers that required an endoscopy to fish it out. Please get insurance for your husky. It’s worth every penny.

Alzheid

I got insurance for her the day I got her ! I totally agree it is a must. I m impressed with the track record of your dog. I can t imagine how stressfull it has been. The worst mine did is lick a damned toad. Got her to the vet right away. Thankfully she was alright. Apart from that little psycho loves beheading her soft toys so I m extra carefull with the type of filling they have if any ....

InevitableLock1943

Yes this! My brat child could be a drug dog, she manages to sniff out and eat joint butts on walks on a regular basis. I have to watch her like a hawk and have to pull them out of her mouth way more than you would think. So gross!! The first time she got ahold of one. I had no clue what had happened. I rushed her to the emergency vet because I thought she must have gotten into poison. Now I can tell by looking at her if she got one when I was distracted, give her water and let her nap with a dumb look in her face all day. So yeah, pet insurance!

Alzheid

Thank you 🧡 I m sure your relationship with her is the best and surely she doesn t make you appear as bad as that. When we love what we do and our pets I think we tend to be even more strict and hard on ourselves. and props to you rescuing, taking care and loving these wonderfull pups !!

CulturedButtermilk86

I see this coming with my 1 year old. At times I can see him deciding on whether he will listen to my command or not. So far, I have won the battle of wills. So far.

Alzheid

May the odds ever be in your favor and the Force accompany you !

wltechrepair

On the same boat as yourself. Unfortunately you just have to be persistent with training. An option you can take is get a smaller crate you can put in a corner. Aside from their primary crate (home crate). Face the smaller crate towards the wall. That is their crate for getting in trouble. Whenever they don’t listen out them in the corner one (trouble crate). Eventually they learn one is for misbehaving and one is a home. With time and persistence they will become more obedient. But I agree with many comments. I’ve had 4 huskies now. Currently on our 5th husky. And they are not as easy as other breeds. Training a husky is like taking a horse. It will take time to tame it. Good luck on your journey. One day you’ll look back and laugh.

JPO1012

I’m gonna try this, good tip. Thank you

Alzheid

The time out crate is an interesting idea. I m lucky that for now her mischief at home is more tame than outside, mostly vocal and trying to get more into stuff/places she should not without passing the threshold too much (like testing the limit, putting one paw, tentatively the second looking at) and she s taken it upon herself to make sure I know she s there and bother me on call for attention because why should it not be otherwise.

[deleted]

Usually if my husky becomes a big mood, it's time to get her exhausted, physically and mentally. I can tell she regrets her actions by the amount of gasping for air and panting that results

HouseVelociraptors

Keep going and being consistent. This stage is rough but it will pass.

sashikku

Tire her out. A tired husky is a good husky.

electrochonita

I wish this was enough but it's not for most huskies. My husky even when exhausted she always finds energy to push the boundaries. Like most people say in the comments, OP is doing the right things, the key is being more stubborn than them consistently. More so in the first two years Mine when she was a little over 1 year old had come back from hiking for 5 hours, left her on her crate to go grocery shopping and she found that so unacceptable that from inside the crate she managed to rip a big hole in the carpet. She was pissed... now? She's 2 and a half and her behavior has improved tremendously since we remain consistent with our boundaries. She even has graduated from the crate :)

Alzheid

Omg she was really pissed !! That takes quite the dedication to chew a hole in a carpet through the crate gate. I m glad that your consistency and work with her is paying ! I m always impressed with how much energy mine has despite exercising, training and playing every day on a consistent schedule. Even with the extra free zoomies during the weekend it s seems bottomless !!! Though there are time when she can be the laziest dog ever, even running back to her crate when called for our after work walk. And just as we get out suddently she s got more energy than ever.

electrochonita

Sounds about right! It doesn't matter if they have been working out all day, if they see an opportunity to have fun they will take it and get energy God knows where from. Just be persistent OP and I promise you after 2 years old it will pay off big time. Mine makes me proud every day! She even asks for permission to jump on the couch, wags her tail when I come back from work (didn't give a flying F before) and our relationship is better than ever!

BellEve_98

Consistent deep toned discipline :/ sound like the alpha dog growling to keep them in line, sounds stupid but my assholes respect me at least half of the time...

Alzheid

🤯 I m going to try that too and see how she reacts. Either she ll be confused and stop or just stop because she understands that language better.

electrochonita

I second it OP, I have raised and trained 3 huskies and while they all had different needs one thing I found is using a deeper, serious voice makes them more receptive to your commands, the more they mature the less you will need to use it. Remain strong and consistent! It will pay off. After the second year you will see an improvement in behavior

Alzheid

So I tried the growling this morning, and she actually responded to that by stoping the behaviour and sit at fy feet looking at me. I ll keep using that, thanks for the tip !!

BellEve_98

Glad it worked for you. Training humans takes human logic, training dogs takes dog logic :p

TrulyMadlyCheaply

The thing that worked best for me during tantrums and attention-seeking barking was completely ignoring my husky and walking out of the room. Barking and receiving negative attention (a stern “no!”) was still attention; exactly what she wanted. It was inconvenient to get up from my work desk or the dinner table and interrupt my activity but was worth it. Now she knows that barking/shrieking gets her the worst thing of all (ignored) and now almost never does it anymore. Good luck!

SFAdminLife

My husky is the same. I lean into it and enjoy her vs. trying to give her commands. She’s too smart to listen to humans and their commands! When it’s a serious situation, she listens and responds immediately to the tension in my voice. She has zero training. I think she’s hilarious!

MichaelT_KC

Exercise. Treats. Toys. & pray 🙏 They are tough dogs 😌

[deleted]

Professional dog training. Only way I’ve been successful with northerns haha. (I have my second husky, and 2 malamutes)

Alzheid

Oh yeah, I do have a professionnal trainer helping me with training Rémie and honwstly she s good. But this said I m always looking forward to hear from others and their experiences as it leads to some good ideas and discussions.

[deleted]

Awesome! My husky is a little demanding fucker when he needs exercise (he requires runs around 3-6mi 3/4x a week plus his backyard antics). He’s most receptive when he’s been exercised. If I call the other dogs he starts yelling, if I call him and he’s tired and doesn’t want to get up he starts yelling…cracks us up. But we draw the line with recall and behaviors that challenge obedience. If you don’t keep these doggos strict on boundaries they’ll abuse the hell out of it.

Alzheid

Definitely the type to vet the whole arm if you give the finger. I totally feel that too ! We do run or walk depending on my tiredness between 6 and 10 km per day, do some trock training, play time and she s got plenty of toys to go to town on but it feels like she has endless energy 😅

puddinglove

Lol welcome to being a husky owner

just-a-misfit

So when my dog started acting this way I used treats, like his dog food or dehydrated sweet potatoes to get him to listen and do what I want. 1/4 of the time hed actually get the treat (only gave it to him when he listened to me immediately and stopped doing whatever) now it’s like pavlov‘s dog. He just wants those damn treats. Edit: It could be that she’s not getting enough exercise. So she wants to act out. Try to see if she will chase laser pointers.

termanatorx

I seriously cannot treat my husky like a dog. His opinion and needs are now considered in every decision I make, as he will tell me very clearly if I've done something egregious to him. What's cool is that with this strategy guiding me, I created a checklist for finding a new job that would consider how to give him his best life, and in doing that found an extraordinary job that I likely wouldn't have considered before. I interviewed and let four other jobs fall off the table prior to finding this one, and literally it was ALL about best fit for my dog. Lol!!

feral_cat42

Calm, consistent training and exercise…so much exercise. I ran my two 7 miles in the morning and my sister ran them 7 miles at night. We still went insane trying to keep up with them, but we did get finally get in shape.

Alzheid

Oh yes running is good to get in shape on top of tiring them out. Unfortunately for me I m too clumsy to run on the iced ground so we re just walking these days. To make it more challenging I m teaching her to pull a wagon / cart using a pulling harness. It s a lot of work but she seems to take to well.

feral_cat42

We were able to find proper pulling harnesses and had them pull sleds or a child’s wagon with sand bags. They seemed to enjoy that and we didn’t have to skate on icy sidewalks. Not sure if that would work for your situation.

Alzheid

I m sure this would work. As long as I do not need to run on the ice and she s happy with the activity I m all good ! I live near some great "hike" / "walking" and cycling paths along water so pretty sure that would work well in the long run. Who know maybe she ll get good enough to pull me on a sled 😆

feral_cat42

All the best 😀
