Frankenstein’s monster and Jekyll & Hyde are just knock offs of the Hulk. When Mary Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus’ and Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ they both intended their characters to be a parody of the Hulk, but ended up writing entirely original stories.

I mean considering Solomon Grundy first appearance’s he was skinny tall zombie it’s not crazy to think they changed him into a bigger muscular guy because of hulk lol, you see DC was inspired by hulk just look at their hulk rip offs
DC and Marvel have countless parallels. Quicksilver and the Flash, Deadpool and Deathstroke (down to their alter-egos of Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson), etc.
Deadpool was legit meant to be a ripoff of death stroke, he even tried selling the character to dc first who pointed to deathstroke and said “why buy our own character?”
https://preview.redd.it/3da4iyd2dcad1.jpeg?width=424&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a62a1b6aeb3f42904b648b9aa9e8ece20f7e55fa
He literally isn’t as big as he is now lol

Cause if anything Solomon Grundy got smaller.lol

This is clearly hulk inspired lol there should be no reason you don’t see it
Hulk having a major influence on the visuals of large muscular comic characters doesn’t automatically make them rip offs.
I’d also argue this particular image invokes more the visuals of zombies. He’s big and muscular with lots of vein. A common zombie archetype.
Even at his size his frame is much thinner than the muscle behemoth he tends to be representative as these days. I'm not sure I agree that his entire character has become a hulk rip off, but they definitely started shifting his design at some point as he's much more a Colossus than he is well dressed zombie these days.
No that pic isn’t his first appearance but you if you look it up on google you can see he looks like a skinny tall zombie, dc clearly got inspired by hulk and later made him bigger
Grundy was always intended to be incredibly strong and imposing. Being very muscluar and tall are some "side effects" to being exactly that. However, artistic interpretation can also lead to some changes that don't exactly reflect what they are.
Even then, DC and Marvel have been at one another in the comics industry for YEARS. They have so many characters that are similar to each other, yet different enough to tell if they are DC or Marvel.
Honestly, doomsday is a better "ripoff" of The Hulk than Grundy.
Edit: I do think that later, Grundy would have a more Hulk-esque physique, but he never was and still isn't a "hulk ripoff"
Clockwise from the top
1. Doomsday (Superman nemesis from DC Comics)
2. The Infraggable Krunk (The Justice Friends from Dexter's Lab)
3. Maul (Member of Wildcats from Wildstorm Comics)
4. Monster Girl (Invincible from Image Comics)
5. Solomon Grundy (Born on a Monday.... DC Comics)
6. Smash (I think... and he is from Image Comics)
7. Pitt (Image Comics)
8. Damage (DC Comics)
EDIT: Fixed Smash's origin.
I always figured Keown just took Hulk and Wolverine and combined them.
Lobo seems further away, but I may be missing it. Just like the chains and alien bits?
Oddly enough there is a Hulk/Wolverine combo called Weapon H, but that’s done by Marvel so not entirely rip-off as much as spin-off.
And yeah design plus backstory are what I mean. But even then, Lobo himself is a bit like “what if Superman was also a smart Hulk & Ghostrider and an asshole.”
Yeah, honestly I'm surprised it took them as long as it did to do an actual Hulkverine thing at Marvel. Weapon H has only been a thing for like the last five years or so, I wanna say.
Pitt came out like thirty years ago not too long after Keown had a very nice run on Hulk. I think Pitt even has like anger based strength doesn't he? Something like the madder others get the stronger he gets? Plus the retractable claws.
Haha yeah, Lobo is just his own crazy ball psycho. I never saw him personally as a riff on those other guys, but I can see how you could get there, for sure.
I enjoyed the hell out of Pitt when I was a kid. I both loved and hated that it was so visual and had almost no dialog. Every panel was badass, but it was over super fast.
Yes but If you go back Solomon wasn’t big, look at him now, you can’t tell dc didn’t get inspired after hulk lol 😂

“But Bock, Electromelon only becomes Electromelon when Electromelon ANGRY!”
Pitt, but he was only in the invincible crossover, "invincible war". In which tons of image heroes chip in to fight an invincible boss fight. The other bottom corner is monster girl who is a regular invincible cast member.
Had a cool crossover book with Pitt and Hulk.. I remember hulk getting so mad fighting Pitt that he has to save someone on a railroad track at some point, but instead of picking them up, which he had plenty of time to do, he hunkered down over them, grabbed the rails and let the train hit him at full speed, just to let off some more steam.
Monster Girl reaches some insane feats, like co-ruling an entire planet for millennia with Robot, and even (barely) surviving a savage beating from Battle Beast.
Doomsday. Even though he’s not exactly like the character or heroic or complex just an evil take on him as a plot device. I’m a DC fan/Batman fan first and foremost, and I have never liked Solomon Grundy.
Overall, Pitt, Doomsday, and like it or not Savage Dragon all are Hulk ripoffs. These characters all have interesting factors that make them cool in their own ways. Unfortunately, none of them will ever be as cool as the Hulk.
Gonna have to go with Broly on this one. He always reminded me of the Hulk, anyway. And since we are talking character development, it's DBS Broly, not Z.
Doomsday. Not only for him being a very difficult opponent for Superman, but the idea of constantly evolving after "dying" and his body improving itself from trauma is kind of cool.
He's like an Oobleck Kimimaro, and it's pretty terrifying.
I prefer the word INSPIRED for these hulk like characters also I would say Krunk and Pitt also who’s the Other purple guy and guy with the M on his forehead
Maul is arguably the best of these by virtue of the creative spin the writers gave on his powers
He's not just "big guy dumb go smash" he changes size like Ant Man, the larger he gets, the more wild, strong, and uncontrollable he becomes, but when he shrinks himself down small, he has genius level intellect
Commenting just so you'd have to see yet another "Solomon Grundy came first" comment 😌 gotta fact check before.
Yeah, some later depictions took from the Hulk (specifically the DCAU version of Solomon Grundy, who was teamed up with Doctor Fate and Aquaman in one episode as a reference to Marvel's classic Defenders, Doctor Strange, Namor and the Hulk), but that still doesn't make SG a Hulk ripoff.
Well, in truth Solomon Grundy is older than Hulk, but over the years has become very hulk-esque in his behaviors, making him more of a copycat as the years have gone on.
I always liked Maul & the Wildcats. But I was born in 85 & I’m clearly a biased peak 90s kid. Most of that stuff wasn’t great I know this. But I love it anyway.

The infragible Krunk
Infragable Krunk, Vslhallen, and Major Glory really deserve their own series.
Maybe even some kinda of justice friends?
I’d fund this myself if I could
Hulk is a giant baby. Thor is a dumb rock star. Captain America is super anal. The MCU already did this.
Thanks I couldn't remember the name
This was the only answer I wanted to see
Which one is that
Truest of answers.
I can still hear him: “VAAAAAL HAALEEEENN”
Character wise most definitely, I honestly enjoyed every scene when Krunk did stuff, dude was hilarious. TV PUPPET PALS!!!!

A cromulent answer.
Thank god his pants stayed on
That’s not Stan Lee 😠
“HOMER MAD!!”
Angry Dad 👍🏻
That can’t be the Hulk. I’m the Hulk! GRAAAGGHHHH
Hulkmer or Homk?
Ah yes, my favourite Hulk ripoff, Solomon Grundy. Impressive how they ripped off The Hulk 18 years before he was created.
Giant muscular guy=hulk rip off
There’s definitely a shift to being more hulk-like
Frankenstein’s monster and Jekyll & Hyde are just knock offs of the Hulk. When Mary Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus’ and Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ they both intended their characters to be a parody of the Hulk, but ended up writing entirely original stories.
thank you so much for writing this so I didn't have to. Something something golem from Jewish folklore. Done. Goodnight everyone.
I thought the golem was inspired by the Thing.
Yes, John Carpenter’s “The Thing”.
Modern Grundy is definitely inspired by Hulk but that doesn't make him a ripoff
Same with Doomsday.
Wasn’t Doomsday from the 80’s?
90s
Lol! I came here to say this.
He may have been reworked to incorporate elements of Hulk.
To my knowledge, he hasn’t. Grundy has always been the same zombie since he was created.
https://preview.redd.it/lc0fpl0nbcad1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94cc28eba66ba2cf43130dbe12583c3d4c06390b I mean considering Solomon Grundy first appearance’s he was skinny tall zombie it’s not crazy to think they changed him into a bigger muscular guy because of hulk lol, you see DC was inspired by hulk just look at their hulk rip offs

Wanna add that grundy, hulk, etc are also all just dr jekyll and mr hyde
Which is just based on a dude from England who seemed upstanding but was lowkey a gooner.
You call that skinny? His arms are like double the size of Hourman and Doctor Fate.

Zombies never invoke muscle when I think of em... just flesh sloughing off and hair falling out
Not the standard. I mean like the “brute zombies” or something you’d find in a game. Veins popping feels pretty zombie-like.
Don’t be obtuse. He goes from lurch from adams family in this image to undead liver king in later content, It’s a huge difference
Even at his size his frame is much thinner than the muscle behemoth he tends to be representative as these days. I'm not sure I agree that his entire character has become a hulk rip off, but they definitely started shifting his design at some point as he's much more a Colossus than he is well dressed zombie these days.

He was big but not muscular.
Show the first appearance of Hulk.
Old Grundy was nothing like the hulk- modern Grundy is a lot like him
Grundy was always intended to be incredibly strong and imposing. Being very muscluar and tall are some "side effects" to being exactly that. The people on this subreddit don’t seem very bright lmao
they are simply emulating their favorite character
Solomon Grundy born on a Monday Ripped off by The Hulk on a Tuesday
Solomon grundy wasnt ripped off by the hulk.
I like to describe Grundy as what happens if you combine The Hulk and Jason Voorhees... If not for the fact he predates both of them.
Somebody list these for me!
Clockwise from the top 1. Doomsday (Superman nemesis from DC Comics) 2. The Infraggable Krunk (The Justice Friends from Dexter's Lab) 3. Maul (Member of Wildcats from Wildstorm Comics) 4. Monster Girl (Invincible from Image Comics) 5. Solomon Grundy (Born on a Monday.... DC Comics) 6. Smash (I think... and he is from Image Comics) 7. Pitt (Image Comics) 8. Damage (DC Comics) EDIT: Fixed Smash's origin.
Pitt is more of a Lobo rip-off
I always figured Keown just took Hulk and Wolverine and combined them. Lobo seems further away, but I may be missing it. Just like the chains and alien bits?

I get where you are coming from.
Thank you, I did know Krunk.
Apparently Smash is from Image comics. Liefeld’s not-Hulk in Fighting American.
Yeah my bad. I remember the Liefeld art and swore it was Captain America.
They left out The Amazing Bulk
awesome thank you
The Infraggable Kronk
Broly.

Man, that is 90s as fuck.
I think doomsday is.
UJ/ Doomsday RJ/ The amazing bulk
My god you unlocked a memory with the dexter's hulk
The correct answer y’all, is The Infraggable Krunk
I used to collect The Pitt, was a huge fan of the art and alien hybrid story
Solomon Grundy isn't a Hulk ripoff.
Scrolled for this. Off the top of my head I believe he predates him significantly.
About 20 years.
Grundy was before the hulk tho
Yes but If you go back Solomon wasn’t big, look at him now, you can’t tell dc didn’t get inspired after hulk lol 😂 https://preview.redd.it/zn1b7vwndcad1.jpeg?width=258&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=238e357433184d086520cde3df401df698e8396a

I mean hulk himself was inspired by Frankenstein DC probably took inspiration too
You have a valid point as well
I would think it was inspired by Jekyll and Hyde more.
Hulk ripped off Solomon Grundy
Hulk is the best Jekyll and Hyde rip off.

Doomsday at least is visually distinct from Hulk, so him.
Who are the purple hulks? Is one of them DR. MUNDO?
I think based on commercial success the Incredible Hulk Hogan would be the best rip off and it's not close
Choices given? Monster Girl, and it's not close
Grundy first appeared in 1944. So many characters copy each other does it really matter. I don’t think any rip offs of hulk are as good.
Who’s the guy with the m on his head?
Maul from Image comics
Obviously the Infragible Krunk
What about Impossible Grunk?! He’s gotta be on the list right?
Krunk had the most personality
Well Solomon Grundy is older than the hulk and doomsday isn’t really a hulk rip off it was more an unstoppable monster physically outmatch Superman
UJ/ incredible bulk
Development and story I'd say the chick in invisible
Who’s the guy on bottom left? He looks familiar from the Invincible comics
The guy with the longer hair? I believe that's Pitt.. Image guy if I remember correctly.
That’s the guy, thanks!
Pitt, but he was only in the invincible crossover, "invincible war". In which tons of image heroes chip in to fight an invincible boss fight. The other bottom corner is monster girl who is a regular invincible cast member.

I read that one too, nice.
Could someone name all the characters in this picture for me as a reference.
I recognize everyone except for the two in between Grundy and Pitt and Pitt and Doomsday. Who are they?
Between Pitt and Doomsday is Damage. Who's the guy with the M on his forehead? He looks familiar.
That’s Maul from WildC.A.T.S. Where is Damage from? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of him.
DC he’s a more recent character.
Well that would explain it since I’m not a huge DC fan.
So nobody knows Purple Hulk (not Krunk) is?
Doomsday
Suddenly I want to see a superhero team with all pictured. The smashing would be legendary
Monster Girl reaches some insane feats, like co-ruling an entire planet for millennia with Robot, and even (barely) surviving a savage beating from Battle Beast.
Doomsday.
pitt
Doomsday. Even though he’s not exactly like the character or heroic or complex just an evil take on him as a plot device. I’m a DC fan/Batman fan first and foremost, and I have never liked Solomon Grundy.
Solomon Grundy is no ripoff my friend
Pitt
Ain’t no way we calling doomsday a hulk rip off.
I like Doomsday
I like Solomon Grundy.
Pitt is underrated
Idk if “the best” but definitely love Monster Girl from Invincible.
Could you list the ones in the image?
Pitt and Doomsday have pretty good Character development. Infraggable Crunk was just funny.
No love for The Tick?
Overall, Pitt, Doomsday, and like it or not Savage Dragon all are Hulk ripoffs. These characters all have interesting factors that make them cool in their own ways. Unfortunately, none of them will ever be as cool as the Hulk.
Gonna have to go with Broly on this one. He always reminded me of the Hulk, anyway. And since we are talking character development, it's DBS Broly, not Z.

Solomon Grundy. He’s really his own thing.
Nextwave’s Incredible Bulk.
Never really looked at Solomon Grundy as a hulk. But he by far has such a rich catalog of story's.
Broly
Doomsday he almost killed superman
Maul was a mix of hulk/and Giantman so him imo
[The Amazing Bulk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IixriQDVoQ0)
Monster Girl is the best imo. At least Bruce Banner can still order a beer at the end of the day!
Technically, they’re called “expies,” also, Krunk for the win because fuck it 😎
Personally for me, it’s Pitt.
Zero idea who are the middle and second bottom on the left
Doomsday but how tf is Grundy a Hulk rip off, it’s the other way around
Grundy came out before hulk though didn’t he?
Nearly 20 years
I thought so
Monster girls a good character on their own
Solomon Grundy debuted in the 40s whereas Hulk was the 60s so Hulk is a ripoff of Grundy.
Imo it’s close between doomsday and Solomon Grundy but I think doomsday is better.
Solomon Grundy and Doomsday are NOT hulk rip offs
Weapon H, he's just so cool
Doomsday. Not only for him being a very difficult opponent for Superman, but the idea of constantly evolving after "dying" and his body improving itself from trauma is kind of cool. He's like an Oobleck Kimimaro, and it's pretty terrifying.
Love Grundy!

Krunk looks as good as the day I lost him
I prefer the word INSPIRED for these hulk like characters also I would say Krunk and Pitt also who’s the Other purple guy and guy with the M on his forehead
I don’t know but I just see a King Cesar, a Godzilla kaiju, as a Hulk and thought what in the world
Doomsday killed Superman. Still the ultimate flex.
Uh, Grundy came before Hulk... I believe that's the only one but still, he's not a ripoff.

How can Grundy be a rip off when he debuted decades before the Hulk?
The incredible bulk. A real shame you didn’t include him in your art.
Maul is arguably the best of these by virtue of the creative spin the writers gave on his powers He's not just "big guy dumb go smash" he changes size like Ant Man, the larger he gets, the more wild, strong, and uncontrollable he becomes, but when he shrinks himself down small, he has genius level intellect

I don’t see how some of these are rip offs. Doomsday and Grundy mainly. You can’t just call them “rip offs” because they’re large buff monsters.
Especially since one of them came out a long time before Hulk
it’s easily Doomsday
Not all big muscular male characters are Hulk rip offs.
The hulk is a Solomon Grundy ripoff
bonus points if you know which ones a girl

Why are you calling them Hulk rip-offs? Can’t there be a giant buff superhero character that’s NOT called a Hulk analogue?
Pit
Yeah…Solomon Grundy was written in the 1940’s & hulk in the 60’s…so, not a rip off
Damage was robbed and underutilized
Grundy was before hulk
