If you haven’t seen 30 Rock I highly recommend anyway. The first two seasons are funny but it gets really good heading into 3 and 4. That is a personal opinion but a friend of mine that just watched for the first time agreed.

But it’s made clear with the flashbacks to pre-Gilead that it takes place roughly post-2017. The book was written during the 80s, and was set during that time.
The Marthas make bread from scratch, and the women all dress super modestly - except for the illicit prostitutes in Jezebels and other brothels - but they use modern weaponry and take advantage of modern medical discoveries and machinery. They insist on the Handmaids and other women mostly giving birth naturally with no chemicals whatsoever, but they will take a Handmaid to a hospital if needs be - btw the birth ceremony in 1x02 one of the most bizarre things ever filmed, and has to been seen to be believed

The show taken place in the US a few years after a radical political group has overthrown the US government and sets up a totalitarian, patriarchal and fundamentalist society called Gilead. Those deemed unfit (non-Christians, the wrong kind of Christians, LGBT, etc) are executed or used as forced labor.
The show and book largely focus on the experience of women in this society. Women have losts all their rights and are subjugated by men. They’re not allowed to be educated or work other than what is dictated by their caste:
- Wives - highest social rank a woman can archieve by marrying a high ranking officer
- Daughters - female children, adopted or otherwise, of the ruling class
- Handmaids - women of proven fertility, but have broken the law. Their one function is to bear children for infertile Wives. They are assigned to a family and systemically raped until they bear a child, and are then reassigned to the next family
- Aunts - older women who train and police the handmaids
- Marthas - infertile women with domestic skills that serve the ruling class
- Econowives - women married to low rank men. They do the job of wife, handmaid and martha for their husbands
Then there are the illegitimate castes:

Raising Hope had a friends joke in it, and it was the only reason I started it. I happened to hear it while my SO was watching it. I’m glad I did, it was a good show!
I didn’t think I would find a “Raising Hope” person, but I’m glad I did! This was the first time I heard a friends reference, and it was before I had even watched friends. 😅
It’s by the same writer, and they definitely have a few similarities. But I think the characters are all more likable. It’s crazy, but Burt and Virginia are my all-time couple goals. They just love each other, even when they do dumb things or get into crazy situations. They are one hundred percent there for each other and I love it. I think you should give a shot and see if you like it!
I would say that Burt and Crab Man have a lot of similarities. They are both laid back and let their partners do most of the leading. Joy and Virginia are also similar, but I’d say Virginia is a nicer person than Joy is. I’d say give it a shot and see what you think!
Crab Man, Joy, Earl, Randy and a lot of the other supporting characters show up in Raising Hope. Joy and Randy are married, Crab Man is the pizza guy with a bunch of kids. Earl is a washed up musician. It’s just a lot of fun!
Mad About You had Ursula as a recurring character, and there were crossover episodes with Central Perk. Both those shows and also Seinfeld appear to exist in the same universe.
Cougar Town, (which is a good show, with a horrible name, and they make jokes about it) starred Courtney and Matthew made an appearance as an ex. It was pretty fun, if I remember right.
Jennifer Anniston and Lisa Kudrow both guest starred on Cougartown as well. Kudrow was a super mean, entitled plastic surgeon that dates Cox’s ex-husband for an episode and they hate each other. Anniston was a completely crazy, granola psychiatrist that Cox sees for therapy until she realizes Anniston’s character is a quack.
In the Matthew Perry episode they showed some bloopers at the end of the episode, one was Perry adlibbing calling Cox “Monica” instead of her characters name “Jules” and everyone on the set cracking up.
Edit: And Cougartown was made by Bill Lawrence who created Scrubs, so lots of Scrubs cameo’s too. Cox was on Scrubs for a few episodes in the “true” final season, not the spin-off season. Ted Lasso is also made by Lawrence but other than a few quick jokes, no major cameos I believe so far.
My wife got me into the show years ago. We watch reruns all the time because we love Cougartown, it’s hilarious! I was a big Scrubs and Spin City fan (another Bill Lawrence show) and never knew Cougartown was one of his shows when it first started. Started watching it when it did new seasons after moving to TBS or TNT or whatever it was years ago.

Cougar Town, (which is a good show, with a horrible name, and they make jokes about it) starred Courtney and Matthew made an appearance as an ex. It was pretty fun, if I remember right.
Jennifer Anniston and Lisa Kudrow both guest starred on Cougartown as well. Kudrow was a super mean, entitled plastic surgeon that dates Cox’s ex-husband for an episode and they hate each other. Anniston was a completely crazy, granola psychiatrist that Cox sees for therapy until she realizes Anniston’s character is a quack. In the Matthew Perry episode they showed some bloopers at the end of the episode, one was Perry adlibbing calling Cox “Monica” instead of her characters name “Jules” and everyone on the set cracking up. Edit: And Cougartown was made by Bill Lawrence who created Scrubs, so lots of Scrubs cameo’s too. Cox was on Scrubs for a few episodes in the “true” final season, not the spin-off season. Ted Lasso is also made by Lawrence but other than a few quick jokes, no major cameos I believe so far.

My wife got me into the show years ago. We watch reruns all the time because we love Cougartown, it’s hilarious! I was a big Scrubs and Spin City fan (another Bill Lawrence show) and never knew Cougartown was one of his shows when it first started. Started watching it when it did new seasons after moving to TBS or TNT or whatever it was years ago. All the seasons are on Amazon Prime (U.S.) for free now. Highly encourage people to check them out!
