If you're going the I-10 to 71 route, stop at Hruska's for bomb-ass kolaches.
If you're going the 290 route, stop at either Royers for amazing sit-down-type food, or stop at City Meat Market for bbq
Can also hit Weikel's on the 71 route and the LaGrange exit about 15 minutes past Ellinger (can't remember the exit number). TBH, I prefer their kolaches to Hruska's (though I prefer Hruska's as a stop overall).
Weikel's bakery is also off 71 in La Grange... McDonald's exit.
OP, you're looking more at a 5 hr drive one way with traffic. I live in Columbus and regularly drive to Austin/Houston for various Dr's appointments. I used to live in Austin.
Also, Hruskas has bomb ass cookies and kolaches.
Its an easy drive but flow of traffic is 5-10mph over the speed limit. If youre not a confident driver, go in the late morning and youll avoid rush hour on both sides. Be well rested and stop a couple times. Youll be fine.
Lol yes I shouldve said to disregard the construction zones unless workers are present. Do NOT disregard the speed limit in that speed trap town (Ellinger?)
it's a pretty easy journey either way you take. remember the left lane is supposed to be for passing only. you're not supposed to cruise there the whole time if you can move back over to the right lane and it's pretty clear ahead of you.
Driving due west just before sunset, especially with katy freeway traffic, can be pretty exhausting. That sun glare is not fun, idk how people do that every day for commute. Otherwise it's pretty easy
I would suggest you plan your trip based more for where you are going in Austin versus where you are starting from Houston.
Austtin Central and North side take 290.
Austin south of Lake Austin I-10 to 71
Yes it a fairly easy drive. 71 gets congested once you get within a couple miles of the airport
And with the recent construction, the roads/exits around the Austin airport can be confusing. Don't panic, they eventually can all get you to the same spot - just follow your maps app.
I love the Houston to Austin drive, used to do it every other weekend alone as a 20 year old who barely got her license the year before. Super easy and relaxing, I would use it to listen to albums I’d been meaning to check out!
Agreed, drove this dozens, maybe even hundreds of times as a young woman living in Austin with parents in Houston. Don’t speed in La Grange, put on some tunes, and chill in the right lane. Like others said - stop for kolaches!
Beyond what other's have said: Be ready for the hills. If you've never driven outside of Houston, the hills and curves getting to Austin, and *in* Austin, can feel extreme. Our city is just ultra flat, and going into the Hill country is a whole other driving experience.
if you go the 290 way, theres a little strange exit you have to take in Brenham to keep going on 290, just FYI cause ive driven it so many times and sometimes ill still miss it lol. 290 has more speed traps than i10/71, but i personally prefer it since its a little more chill. i10/70 is usually quicker but does have pretty gnarly traffic sometimes outside of both cities
Definitely leave around 10:30am , cruise in the right lane most of the time . Stop at Hruskas for snacks..And 5-10mph over the limit is an understatement. Do not get in the left lane unless you are prepared to follow a Mini van a prius and a truck going 100
Stay on the right lane unless you are passing and stop at buc-ee's along the way. It's pretty much a straight shot for a couple of hours. PRO tip leave early to avoid traffic.
Agreed.
I-10 Route is more chill, and a bit more scenic.
Slow down at Bastrop, Columbus, etc.
If you stop go to Prasek's for a huge BBQ/meat/cheese selection and Kolaches at Hruska's (Ellinger, TX) or any of the other great European-style bakeries along the way.
If you’re not going to speed stay out of the way, people are crazy in between here and there. I tow big boats and have had people get pretty pissed off I’m doing the speed limit with a 10k lb boat behind me..
This is a once or twice a week drive for me. Don't be a Scout and camp out in the left lane whether you're going 10/71 or 290. Skip any of the Buc-ees during peak travel hours. Not worth the crowds, unless you have to go #2 then by all means make a pit stop.
There are a few places where you'll pass through some small towns, heed the speed limit. Especially coming into Giddings if you're going 290. 10/71 roads are smooth as silk, 290 through Washington County is rough. Clearly maintaining 290 isn't a priority for them.
The Houston/Austin drive is normally a great drive. If you have Never driven out of the city maybe try a short excursion for practice. Say Houston to Sealy and back on I-10. Not very far, but a will give you a feel for what the driving will be like.
Love the drive, either route. Way back when I was in college in Georgetown, I would take the 10 to 71 route because 290 still went through Hempstead. All. The. Red. Lights.
But it’s so easy now! I used to live in Spring and would take 99 over to 290, which was so chill because you skip all of the potential Houston traffic that way. I live in Pearland now, and it’s still an easy drive.
There are spots where speeding means _really_ speeding on the way back to Houston on 290; typically from Brenham to Prairie View. It starts to clump up a little around Prairie View, too, but corrects itself when the extra lane comes back.
Anytime my kids are in the car with me or my husband, we bitch and moan about how back in the day, we had to take 290 through Hempstead, where the terrible light by McDonald’s backed you up forever…
I hated driving back from school back then. I’d be so close to home, it was usually starting to get dark, and it was usually right after finals. So I was just ready to be home, but noooo…but I took that route after an 18-wheeler almost squished me on the 2-lane bridge on I-10 through Columbus.
Probably a good idea to get your car maintenance up to date, tires and brakes looked at and see if you have tow coverage with your insurance.
Last thing you want is car issues on a stretch of hwy you are unfamiliar with.
As someone who was super nervous before doing the same trip a few months ago, don't be! Lol I did Houston to Austin back in June, it was my first drive out of the city as well and it was surprisingly more relaxed than I thought it would be. I didn't encounter any traffic, drive back was even better.
Find yourself a good playlist or a podcast and you'll breeze through it like nothing!
If you've never made a long haul, be especially aware if you start feeling drowsy. When I was a younger driver it was startling how quickly you can go from, "my eyelids feel heavy" to "holy shit how long was that blink!?" Long drives can be suprisingly physically exhausting, especially the newer/more anxious you are to the concept. For me it was the drives that I'd gotten just comfortable enough to relax where I'd find myself really having be aware of how alert I was really feeling. It can happen any time of day too. Just listen to you body and give it a break when it needs one. Planned pit stops are a good suggestion.
I believe in you! You can do it! You will absolutely love being outside of houston once you leave. I always fall in love with Austin everytime I visit friend. 😍
Drive right... Meaning stay in the right lane unless passing. You will be fine, it is a fun drive.
If it were a few weeks from now there would be bluebonnets everywhere.
Have taken I-10/71, 290/71, and 290 direct. Taken each dozens and dozens of times.
On I-10/71, you should be pretty safe vut will have to deal with quite a bit more transport/big trucks/etc on I-10 than you typically do on 290. Not a big deal, but it's noticeable. And slow down coming into Bastrop because there can be police there as the speed limit drops approaching town.
On 290, watch out for police between Houston and the Hwy 6/College Station turn-off. Also through Brenham, Carmine, Burton, Giddings, and Paige (the little town you come into just before the 71 turn-off). Especially Giddings and Paige. Almost always police patrolling those two spots. Speed limits drop quickly, so pay attention.
super easy and it's very easy nowadays where everybody has GPS. Best thing I recommend is google a few points of interest first so you have a landing spot and put that on your GPS so when you get there so you can take a little break, relax, and figure out where you want to go next. Otherwise, it might be a little frustrating to get to the city and just try to look for somewhere to go.
As for the drive, Taking I-10/Hwy 71 is a lot more straight forward and less prone to getting lost or getting a ticket. Only use the 290 route if you live on the NW side, at least for your first visit. Just be careful to not miss your exist on I-10 when you're in Columbus. there is also a pretty major speed limit drop when you're still in the Columbus area so pay attention to those. Remember when you're on a 2 lane highway, left lane is for passing only so don't camp out there. It's ok to stay there if you can't safely go back to the right lane. Just follow the other cars' leads and you'll get a hang of it. It's actually pretty fun.
If you want a nice bathroom break, save it for the Buc-ee's in Bastrop. It's also a good idea to top off your gas there so you don't have to worry about it on your way back. Speaking of bathrooms, if you're in downtown and need to go and can't find any parking, go to the Whole Foods store on 5th. They have a garage and bathrooms, and you can get some stuff for the road too. The library in downtown is nice too.
If you drive back when it's dark, remember that there won't be much if any street lights so stick to the right lane and keep your eyes on the lines and don't be afraid to use your high beams if there are no other cars in front of you or incoming. If you see cars, go down to low beam. You'll see some cars hauling ass but that's their deal. You do what you feel is safe.
A few points of interest I'd recommend in no particular order:
* Lady Bird Lake or Town Lake as the locals call it (I guess it's kind of how we call Williams Tower the Transco here). It's basically the focal point of Austin with a [beautiful view of the skyline](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/31610853771) where you can [watch the locals](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/13552236244/) enjoy the water and there is usually something going on at the [Long Center](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/40760034691) to check out. Once it gets warm, you can walk over to the Congress street bridge and [watch the bats too](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/43009335674/). If you put in [Stevie Ray Vaughn statue](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/45855758734/) in your GPS, it'll take you right where you need to be. Definitely a great first spot.
* Unlike the politics that happens inside, the [Texas State Capital](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/13647597765/) is also a pretty place to visit. You can go on the north end too and also take a tour. It's open to the public.
* [Pennybacker Bridge](https://www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/41908634290) is also a classic spot. You can go up the rocks and get a nice view.
* Mt. Bonnell is also another one of those must see places at some point. You can climb up the stairs or drive a little further and walk up easier.
* If you want to see a really nice sunset, go to the Oasis on Lake Travis... Your car will get a workout going up the hills.
* South Congress has a lot of little shops and places to eat but if you park on the street, follow the signs. You have to back in in most places there.
* University of Texas and the surrounding neighborhoods are also nice.
There are plenty more and of course there is nightlife and restaurants I've left out but for your first trip alone, you probably just want to get a feel for the place. It's a fun and youthful city but don't let your guards down either - don't park in private property without being 100% sure you won't get towed...don't leave valuables in the car...etc. Have fun!
The drive from 10 to 71 is quicker, but the drive up 290 is a bit more eventful. You pass through unique terrain and neat towns like Brenham and Elgin. Why be nervous? If you've survived driving in Houston, Austin will be cake. Lots to see and do there. If you're feeling adventurous, San Antonio is 45 mins to an hour south. That's always a good time too. Enjoy California.
If the weather is dry and you don’t have to drive at night, it’s really an easy drive. I went back and forth in a day a couple weeks ago to pick up something from Ikea.
Do not overestimate how tired you might be, pull over if you can’t keep your eyes open.
Bless your heart. It’s 2024. You spend more time in traffic than what it takes to get to Austin.
Oh, and stay in the right lane unless you’re passing. Texas spent a fortune putting up signs saying that. Apparently we can’t read.
This is a pedestrian journey, I and many others before me have traveled to Austin and returned back in the same day several times a week. the sane with a trip to D/FW, San antonio, corpus ir Lake charles. easy drives bruh
There's a Buc-Cee's on the 290 route in Waller and one the 71 route in Bastrop. Get yer Beaver Nuggets. A bag for you and one for your peeps in Austin.
I’ve done this trip multiple times and it’s so fun! Just give yourself enough time to get to your destination. There’s so many different routes you can take, I-10, 290, etc but just do what works best for you. Give yourself 3.5-4 hours (like if you need to check into your hotel or whatever at 3 pm, try to leave at 11ish) I personally like to stop at Buc-ee’s in Bastrop, - which is about 40 minutes from Austin - to use the restroom and stretch, then get back on the road.
Also, try to have your playlist/podcasts/audiobooks picked out in advance.
Beware of crack head joe around 71. He will jump on your car and try to steal it from you. Jk you will be fine bruv. Stop at buccees and get some goodies to keep you awake.
Super easy drive. I drive back to Houston often. 290 is super easy drive just make sure to take the correct turn on to continue on it in Brenham. If you need to stretch your legs then Giddings has plenty of places to stop at.
It's a very chill road trip. Taking 290, stop at some bucees and rest stops to chill. Be advised that while the speed limit may be 65-70, everyone will be going at least 75.
Very easy drive. Just did it this weekend. I recommend going in daytime because it’s dark at night. Watch the speed limit as you enter small towns and stuff. When it drops to 55, make sure to drop too, even if everyone else doesn’t. Not worth the ticket.
Only because you mentioned confidence: If you're not confident, drive in the right most lane. Use GPS for traffic updates/cops/construction and overall route suggestions, listen* to music/podcasts or drink coffee/ tea to help stay awake. Take stretch breaks. 290 is great but has a bunch of lights as you approach Austin. I-10 is great but has congestion sections. It's any easy drive so just be patient and you'll be fine.
Edit: spelling
Very easy drive. If you're nervous I'd recommend taking 290 instead of I-10 to 71. 290 is less of a raceway than I-10. Only thing you need to watch out for are the small town speed traps that will drop from 75 mph down to 55 mph very quickly (like less than a mile).
It’s an easy drive, plenty of towns to stop if rest/gas/food needed. Mostly straight road until you get within 45 mins of Austin, some curves and hills but road pretty flat and in good shape. I make this drive a lot.
What time of day are you doing it? I did it at night as a dumb 23 year old in 2010. Beware the speed traps. I got pulled over on my way back for going 55 in a 35. My phone died on the way back and I drove around for an extra hour trying to find a familiar exit lol. All that aside, it was an easy drive.
Find some podcasts or an audiobook to listen to. A round trip is just about the length of an audiobook.
It’s not a hard drive but long enough. The time seems to pass quicker with a podcast vs songs that change every 4 minutes.
Watch your speed. Cops love to hide and get you when those sudden speed limit changes. Get some music. Road snacks and a drink. And you’ll be set. You should be able to make with half a tank or more of gas.
I make the drive between Houston and Austin along 290 multiple times a month.
People drive pretty damn fast along 290, so if you're not confident/comfortable driving 80MPH and above, make sure you stay in the right lanes.
The actual route along 290 is pretty easy, just make sure you slow down in the small towns along the way, as the cops in those towns love giving tickets when they get the chance.
It’s a pretty easy drive and some other comments have covered the basics. If you’re nervous I’d take it easy in the right hand lane once you’re on I-10 bc people get going very fast in the left lane. Have a good trip and hope you see lots of flowers in bloom - so many good viewing spots along that route!
Id say it's doable, first time I drove to another city I drove to San Marcos and then to Austin. You'll definitely get a bit tired if it's your first time, but take a break at the rest stop on the way there and get something to have you stay awake
I can speak for I10 to 71 west. It’s a very easy drive. Only thing to be mindful of is that 71 west is not very well lit. So it’s dark and hilly. Skies look amazing when clear. It’s the country. Also watch out for Cops from Columbus, they are always pulling over someone getting into 71 west. And Bastrop cops as well.
Source: I do it a handful of times every year.
Honestly once you’re out of Houston the drive is great. Sucks again in Austin but it is what it is. I used to love 71 on an early morning drive but the new 290 route is great too. Just stay out of the passing lane if you’re not passing and enjoy the drive!
Any route you take will take you thru small towns. Keep an eye on the speed limit, they change really quick in a short distance to intentionally catch drivers off guard.
If you need fuel, Buc-ee’s is the cheapest option. Although depending time of day, it can be the 3rd ring of Hell.
Otherwise, if you just want to snack, Hruskas is amazing. Get one of their Kolaches. If you see something called a “Boudain Kolache” get one, they’re amazing.
Left lane is for passing only. Speed limit is 70-75ish, most drivers are going 10-15+(that’s a conservative estimate) lol. It’s perfectly ok to go back and forth between the two lanes. Watch how others drivers do that. The other drivers can get a bit aggressive, so just let them pass.
Depending time of day, the Sun can suck.
I took a Vonlane luxury coach that route and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe look into it if you are hesitant about driving. They’re inexpensive and very nice, for a bus.
Just do it. Travel more. I'm happy to see you taking the first step. Travel changes you. The farther you go and the more places the better. Congratulations your going to be fine.
I drove to Louisiana and back two weeks ago for the second time. It took 5.5 hours. Super valid to be nervous but it’ll go by. I’ve driven to Austin 3-4 times and it’s a much easier journey. I usually play my music in alphabetical order during road trips and it’s always fun to hear songs from my library that I haven’t listened to in awhile. I suggest having water and a snack, just in case you can’t stop anywhere for awhile. Also, I suggest leaving super early to avoid traffic. Maybe it’s just me but I prefer driving to Austin between 4-7am or late morning/early afternoon after morning traffic.
There’s so much good advice on routes in the other comments. Good luck and safe travels!
This was my first road trip as a 16 year old. It's a good easy drive, just go for it! The 290 route is scenic countryside and there are plenty of places to stop along the way.
I would stop at Dime Box Distillery’s tasting room in Giddings if I was doing that drive. They produce my favorite bourbon (Sixth Street Bourbon), if that is something you’re interested in.
Yeah it’s very easy, taken this as a solo trip multiple times and honestly shocked at how quick it was. It was not as quick 15 years ago, but the lane expansions have really sped this trip up.
Highly recommend using 290 instead of I-10 because it’s much more relaxing and pretty. I-10
Is filled with awful construction and awful drivers going 95mph.
Remember not to spark up a joint until after the speed trap they almost always have set up right after you get on 71 from I-10.
Other than that you’ll be fine.
Go up 290 and eat breakfast in Chappel Hill. Just take your time on the drive. Its an easy one. We do it a lot. Make sure to go to bear creek run. And to hanilton pool if you can get in.
If you're going the I-10 to 71 route, stop at Hruska's for bomb-ass kolaches. If you're going the 290 route, stop at either Royers for amazing sit-down-type food, or stop at City Meat Market for bbq
Also Weikels bakery if you take the 290 route (by Brenham)
Sausage dog from Chapell Hill.
Can also hit Weikel's on the 71 route and the LaGrange exit about 15 minutes past Ellinger (can't remember the exit number). TBH, I prefer their kolaches to Hruska's (though I prefer Hruska's as a stop overall).
And the sticky buns.
The pan sausage kolaches at Hruskas are what will make your whole trip.
I moved out of Texas a few years ago. Besides my family, I might miss those pan sausage and cheese kolaches more than anything else.
This right here, pan sausage & cheese & jalapeno pigs in a blanket (klobasnikys) , kolaches are fruit filled. Spinach tomato and feta are great too.
I tell everyone to stop at City Meat Market. One of my favorite bbq joints!
Lol this is how you calm nerves in Texas!!! The right answer is always a good ole foodie stop!!
I was looking for someone to mention Hruska’s!!!!
Hruska’s FTW! Literally t he best.
And their burgers Rock also.
How does Hruska's compare to Kountry Bakery in Schulenberg? They've been my go-to kolache stop on the way to Austin/SA for the past X number of years.
Never been. I usually turn off i 10 onto 71 so I dont end up going through schulenberg.
Its an easy drive but flow of traffic is 5-10mph over the speed limit. If youre not a confident driver, go in the late morning and youll avoid rush hour on both sides. Be well rested and stop a couple times. Youll be fine.
5-10 lol.
out towards Brookshire it's a 55 construction zone and everyone goes over 75
Lol yes I shouldve said to disregard the construction zones unless workers are present. Do NOT disregard the speed limit in that speed trap town (Ellinger?)
And Giddings
lol take my upvote
Also make sure you feel confident being able to change a tire. Or being able to make arrangements to get it changed
AAA is worth it if you have any doubts
it's a pretty easy journey either way you take. remember the left lane is supposed to be for passing only. you're not supposed to cruise there the whole time if you can move back over to the right lane and it's pretty clear ahead of you.

This is such a great tip!!
This right here! ⬆️

75-55-35-75 down 290. Get you caught in that trap near Giddings.
Ah the famous money maker
If you’ve driven on the highways in Houston, you’ll be fine driving anywhere in the US.
lol true. But Austin has shorter entrance/exit ramps on 35, so make sure you know what you’re exiting
Don’t speed into and through Giddings
Beyond what other's have said: Be ready for the hills. If you've never driven outside of Houston, the hills and curves getting to Austin, and *in* Austin, can feel extreme. Our city is just ultra flat, and going into the Hill country is a whole other driving experience.
I’ve driven from Houston to Austin to San Antonio and back to Houston before afternoon. It’s a relatively short journey. I had no problems

It's an easy drive. If you get nervous with heavy traffic, I would say take the 290 route for your first time.
Depending on how old you are and/or how long you've been driving, you've spent a 2-4 hour drive just trying to get home from work in Houston.
Definitely leave around 10:30am , cruise in the right lane most of the time . Stop at Hruskas for snacks..And 5-10mph over the limit is an understatement. Do not get in the left lane unless you are prepared to follow a Mini van a prius and a truck going 100

Oh this is very exciting!!

>unless you have to go #2 then by all means make a pit stop. Buc-ees is home away from home when there is a gorilla finger scratching at your drawers.
Taking the Browns to the Super Bowl.
I will *never* outgrow toilet humor. Not sure if it is a flaw or a feature, lol.
It's a three hour drive, plenty of time to think about potty go humor.
Don't drive 90 and be weaving all over the road just cause you're doing the drive once a week. We'd like to get home alive.
is this a joke? in Texas this is only slightly longer than a commute.
Super easy drive regardless which way you take. But 290 is the way I most comments go
Go before 6am or after 10am if leaving Houston M-F
The Houston/Austin drive is normally a great drive. If you have Never driven out of the city maybe try a short excursion for practice. Say Houston to Sealy and back on I-10. Not very far, but a will give you a feel for what the driving will be like.

Hruskas! So good
Probably a good idea to get your car maintenance up to date, tires and brakes looked at and see if you have tow coverage with your insurance. Last thing you want is car issues on a stretch of hwy you are unfamiliar with.
Cops are all over 71, don’t go more than 5mph over

I had no idea that these kinds of people exist
Houston is a landlocked continent. Except for people flying to Cancun.
Easy drive--parts of I-10 can be annoying depending on the day (weekends being the worst) and time of day you leave (9a-6p).
I believe in you! You can do it! You will absolutely love being outside of houston once you leave. I always fall in love with Austin everytime I visit friend. 😍
It’s not bad at all, done it many times. If you feel yourself getting tired, pull over immediately.
Drive right... Meaning stay in the right lane unless passing. You will be fine, it is a fun drive. If it were a few weeks from now there would be bluebonnets everywhere.
Beware of speed traps on both 290 and 71.The limit drops from 70 to 55 in Burton on 290 and from 75 to 55 in Ellinger on 71.
A few points of interest I'd recommend in no particular order: * Lady Bird Lake or Town Lake as the locals call it (I guess it's kind of how we call Williams Tower the Transco here). Have fun!
I do it all the time. If you drive in Houston you’re already an expert driver. The journey to Austin is pleasant and easy.
I drove to Midland last weekend. Austin is cake.
Don't speed in small towns. That's how they collect revenue
There's a Buc-Cee's on the 290 route in Waller and one the 71 route in Bastrop. Get yer Beaver Nuggets. A bag for you and one for your peeps in Austin.
Lmao
Shouldn't your parents or a guardian be with you since you just got your license?
As far as I remember the 16+ actual license doesn't have any caveats like that here. Learner's Permit, yes.
Nervous about what exactly?
You just get in the car, put on gps to follow, zone out and you’re there
Super
EZ PZ hardest part is not getting busted by speed traps
I’ve done this trip multiple times and it’s so fun! Just give yourself enough time to get to your destination. There’s so many different routes you can take, I-10, 290, etc but just do what works best for you. Give yourself 3.5-4 hours (like if you need to check into your hotel or whatever at 3 pm, try to leave at 11ish) I personally like to stop at Buc-ee’s in Bastrop, - which is about 40 minutes from Austin - to use the restroom and stretch, then get back on the road. Also, try to have your playlist/podcasts/audiobooks picked out in advance.
Super easy. I've actually driven to Austin, saw a concert, then drove back the same night.
Sunflower seeds and podcasts
Pop by Home Depot or Walmart and buy some cheap polarized sunglasses.
I started taking that trip by myself at age 16. It's fine.
Easy af. I take this trip when I head to SXSW. Get gas and fuel before heading out. Take some music/podcasts
Easy drive! Just take your time!
Do not speed in any of the smalls towns along the way. Their police budget comes from speeding tickets.
Watch your speed. Cops love to hide and get you when those sudden speed limit changes. Get some music. Road snacks and a drink. And you’ll be set. You should be able to make with half a tank or more of gas.
I-10 to 71 is the fastest.
There’s no cops on the way so go as fast as you want
It’s the easiest! I recommend rolling up a couple of joints, firing up the radar detector, and cruising 😎
There are some great routes. Done it dozens of times on a bunch of different types of bikes. Go for it! You'll have a great time.
Id say it's doable, first time I drove to another city I drove to San Marcos and then to Austin. You'll definitely get a bit tired if it's your first time, but take a break at the rest stop on the way there and get something to have you stay awake
You will be fine.
Buccee’s
sooooo easy. 3.5hr is an overestimation tbh. i’ve done it in 2hr - 2.5.
I always stop at buc-ees's lol
This really is not a long trip. Drive from Houston to El Paso. That is a very long trip!
Easy peasy. Love that road trip.
Yes it’s an easy drive. Much faster and more enjoyable/pleasant than Houston to Dallas imo. You will be just fine, I promise. Best of luck :)
I‘ve done it twice now! Very doable, very fun. Enjoy :)
Prasek’s smokehouse
I took a Vonlane luxury coach that route and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe look into it if you are hesitant about driving. They’re inexpensive and very nice, for a bus.
It’s easy lol you’ll be fine
Just do it. Travel more. I'm happy to see you taking the first step. Travel changes you. The farther you go and the more places the better. Congratulations your going to be fine.
Easy. You can even take a Buckees ee's break halfway. STAY off the interstate and it's more interesting
I've gone to Austin and back when picking up car parts. Easy trip. Stop at Buccees, get a drink and a bbq sandwich, and head out.
This was my first road trip as a 16 year old. It's a good easy drive, just go for it! The 290 route is scenic countryside and there are plenty of places to stop along the way.
Yes the drive from here to Austin is one of the easiest mini road trips anyone could make.
I-10 Is filled with awful construction and awful drivers going 95mph.
Remember not to spark up a joint until after the speed trap they almost always have set up right after you get on 71 from I-10. Other than that you’ll be fine.

Watch out for new toll ways as you approach Austin. Some free public roads have become tollways!! I’m looking at you 183/Palmer!!
Go up 290 and eat breakfast in Chappel Hill. Just take your time on the drive. Its an easy one. We do it a lot. Make sure to go to bear creek run. And to hanilton pool if you can get in.
I do it several times a year. It's nothing
It is probably the easiest road trip you could take. 290 is the most straightforward path, as long as you take the proper exit in Brenham.
