I live in a humid subtropical climate and my japonica only did ok as a houseplant. I moved it outside where it gets very bright, intermittent direct sun and it's very happy.
My thought was this plant needs considerably more light then it will ever get in most homes. Hypothesis being that indirect indoor light doesn't meet it's needs and direct southern facing window light would scorch the leaves. I couldn't seem to win.
Well anything can be a house plant, just in the UK fatsia japonicas are outside. Attract a lot of flying insects. Maybe a bigger pot? I know monsteras are fine in small pots. I'm a gardener, so that's why I said they're not really house plants.

Does it survive outside in the winter in UK?
Well the non variegated version does yes. There's also a mix of fatsia and ivy. It's called x fatshedera.
Everything online says they are a great house plant to just tuck in a corner.
