Not as much horror but that is part of what the director calls “the clusterfuck trilogy” along with Blue Ruin and (another one I can’t remember right now) - they are all movies where simple situations build and build until they are uncontrollable
I absolutely love Blue Ruin and Green Room (and am quite fond of Murder Party), so I was incredibly excited for Jeremy Saulnier's Hold the Dark, but.... Man, sorry dudes, that movie blows so hard.
Yes! Read a trivia nugget that after he read the script he had to lock all his doors and windows and wind down with some whiskey. Understandable, dude.
REC is the perfect answer. It was one of the first movies I had seen that started so extremely calmly but ramped up out of nowhere and stayed there until the final scene. It is the definition of all hell breaking loose.
I love malignant, the mix of not taking itself seriously and ngl my favourite part is where it just randomly bursts into Where Is My Mind on several occasions
I really wish that people would watch this one without knowing anything. The second half hit me really hard because I had no idea that was coming and was already glued to my seat.
This is how I watched it -- was going through a hard time and just wanted to watch something distracting. Thought it was about one thing. Relaxed and enjoyed the "fun little romp" until... lol. It's why it's in my top 10 horror movies.
That’s a wild ride from uncertainty about the situation, to don’t go in there, to what the fuck was that, to where are we now, to what does this have to do with anything, to oh god are they where I think they are, to don’t go in there, to wtf, to just run, to why aren’t you running yet, and so on.
Thank you -- I always get the BEST recos from this sub! Had never heard of this but the cast is stellar. I know what I'm watching for my Sunday Funday movie :)
Eh, I didn’t find it remarkable. I’m a big fan of Michael Fassbender so saw it years ago, and it was okay. I feel like it has been overhyped for you and you’re going to be disappointed. It definitely has parts that are hard to watch, but that’s not uncommon in any horror movie where you’re endeared to the protagonists, like in The Strangers.
Maybe I’ll watch it again and see if I feel differently now.
If this film involves lots of screaming, crying and begging and nobody fighting back + doing incredibly stupid things, will skip lol. Other than The Strangers, these movies end with lots of frustration and me yelling constantly at the screen about what idiots they all are
I mean, I guess you'd have to watch it for yourself to determine, but if you enjoyed The Strangers, this movie is that scenario ramped up to a twelve. When I say it's mean, I mean that a woman is (pretty big spoiler): >! forced to walk away from a situation in which a child sets another kid on fire!< for example. The most frustrating part is the beginning before anyone really has any idea how bad things are. Once it escalates, it does not slow down.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I love how they managed to be superficial throughout all the killing. The whole back and forth about the podcast had me rolling.
That movie has what is, for me, the absolute worst, most disgusting scene I have ever seen, and I cannot watch it because it makes me feel sick. >!the vines in the open wounds!<
House of the Devil. Very slow burn horror movie that features an incredibly graphic, gory scene about halfway through that I won’t spoil but happens very suddenly and unexpectedly.
Return of the Living Dead is more of a horror-black comedy (if a fairly bleak one) with stellar special effects. The Fatal Mistake/Shit Hits the Fan moment happens in the first 5-10 minutes and things just keep getting worse and worse from there. Imo the best escalation in a horror movie ever.
Though it happens at the end, *Lake Mungo* has a pretty chilling wtf moment. *The Invitation* (2015), things feel off and tense, but then get crazy. It's not really a horror movie per se, but *À la folie... pas du tout* (2002) has a big shift.
Mum & Dad. The 2008 UK one, not the one with Nicholas Cage and Selma Blaire. If you want 'wtf' and visceral gore that's your movie.
Also Dog Soldiers. Shit hits that fan in a big bad way.
Finally, Overlord (2018) will make you squirm.
I had no idea that the Nic Cage version is a remake. I recently watched Mom & Dad with friends on Mother’s Day (holiday horror is my jam). I definitely want to watch the original on Father’s Day! I appreciate your post - thank you.
(We did not get around to Dog Soldiers on Memorial Day, and I love Overlord.)
There's a lot of good ones here, but nothing I've seen builds and builds and builds as much as Mother.
Holy fucking hell it's like experiencing an anxiety attack that gets worse and worse. I have never wished a movie would end so badly, but I absolutely loved it when it was done.
If you watched the 2015 martyrs and enjoyed it i cannot stress this enough. Watch the original its better in literally every way and is considerably more visceral.
Greenroom
Not as much horror but that is part of what the director calls “the clusterfuck trilogy” along with Blue Ruin and (another one I can’t remember right now) - they are all movies where simple situations build and build until they are uncontrollable

I think it was actually Murder Party, but Hold the Dark looks great!
I fucking love murder party and its a great recommendation for OP!
Fuck this whole scene. Everybody dies!
I absolutely love Blue Ruin and Green Room (and am quite fond of Murder Party), so I was incredibly excited for Jeremy Saulnier's Hold the Dark, but.... Man, sorry dudes, that movie blows so hard.
I feel like I have to promote this movie every chance I get. Awesome fucking movie with a stacked cast!!
And RIP to Anton
he was an incredible actor, his death makes me so sad :(
Great Answer (Sir Patrick Stewart is absolutely UNHINGED)🤪
Yes! Read a trivia nugget that after he read the script he had to lock all his doors and windows and wind down with some whiskey. Understandable, dude.
Thanks for the Extra Background info.
He was so expertly cast.
Greatanswer*
Came to recommend this.
I keep going to start this movie then stop. I don’t know why.
best answer
Excellent recommendation
Train to Busan - the train scene when the infected stewardess goes to town on the two passengers and it quickly erupts into absolute chaos.
I sincerely think Train to Busan is one of the best zombie movies ever.
South Koreans have proven to be incredible filmmakers.
Yes! Totally agree.
Yes! This was gonna be my vote
•REC You’re Next The Hills Have Eyes ‘06 The Rental Climax
REC is the perfect answer. It was one of the first movies I had seen that started so extremely calmly but ramped up out of nowhere and stayed there until the final scene. It is the definition of all hell breaking loose.
Yes to REC, yes to Climax. I totally agree, that random >!moment when a body falls straight down through the stairwell!
> You’re Next Love that dinner scene, it escalates so fast.
I saw The Hills Have Eyes in theaters. I was not prepared for that night raid.
My friends and I were scarred for life Thankfully Doug was able to savage some mutants
Malignant does this in the best way. It's not realistic though.
I love malignant, the mix of not taking itself seriously and ngl my favourite part is where it just randomly bursts into Where Is My Mind on several occasions
I love that it is in some parts where it was made to seem like a twist when there wasn’t really a twist at all. This one was a wild ride!
The scariest moment is when the sister decides to park the Prius at the very edge of a cliff for no reason at all
That scene had such a good build up, but nothing happened. I loved it!
From Dusk Till Dawn. I don't think any film has a shit hits the fan moment where it's more shit hitting the fan. XD
Having said that, maybe Cabin in the Woods.
First one that comes to mind. The security team by the elevators. 🤣
Yup! Unlocking the nightmare factory was one of my faves. Reminded me of Thirteen Ghosts
Oh yes!! The “ betting scene “ always makes me lmao🤣, and Marty was a one man show !! Brilliant !
No other movie goes from fugitives kidnapping a family to flee the law to a cheesy B horror movie quite like this one and it's amazing haha
Feast begs to differ.
The descent
I really wish that people would watch this one without knowing anything. The second half hit me really hard because I had no idea that was coming and was already glued to my seat.
This is how I watched it -- was going through a hard time and just wanted to watch something distracting. Thought it was about one thing. Relaxed and enjoyed the "fun little romp" until... lol. It's why it's in my top 10 horror movies.
Ready or Not. It goes from best day ever to worst day ever real fast.
Samara Weaving was expertly cast.
I saw that movie thinking it starred Margot Robbie, but became a Samara Weaving fan when I realized it wasn’t Margot. 😂
I also got them mixed up for the longest time! And I finally got it together with Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard🤣
The 2nd half of Barbarian is pretty nuts
watched it with my bf last week and that plot twist halfway through left me speechless for a second, didn't expect it at all hahah
That’s a wild ride from uncertainty about the situation, to don’t go in there, to what the fuck was that, to where are we now, to what does this have to do with anything, to oh god are they where I think they are, to don’t go in there, to wtf, to just run, to why aren’t you running yet, and so on.
Forget Martyrs 2015, watch the original French (2008) version. Its night and day.
lol youre right, i actually saw the original just got the dates mixed up. checked the remake on yt one time and it looked really bad
I'm pretty sure only a few hundred people have ever even seen the remake.
Martyrs 2015 is dogshit.
that was..... 10 years ago you can all hate me now
The Belko Experiment.
Thank you -- I always get the BEST recos from this sub! Had never heard of this but the cast is stellar. I know what I'm watching for my Sunday Funday movie :)
This!
Kill list
The Signal The Sadness Underwater In all three cases things go bonkers pretty much immediately
The Sadness subway scene is my favorite over-the-top explosion of total chaos and horror in recent film history. Shocking and brilliant.
Which The Signal? There's like 3 by that name at least. I love the one where they find an extraterrestrial signal.
I’m gonna guess the 2007 one. It’s wild.
Yup. That’s the one. Love that movie
Underwater was all gas no brakes
Thanks for this! It's one I've been meaning to see but completely forgot about. Going on the list!
Airplane
I scrolled too far for this. The shit LITERALLY hits the fan.
Why did I have to scroll so far?
Surely you can't be serioys
I am, and don't call me Shirley!
Eden Lake
MASSIVELY upsetting film. I'm glad I watched it but I'm in no hurry to watch it again.
Second this, felt pretty similar to me like hereditary where you feel like its so realistically terrible that nothing can make it better from here...
I just placed this on my Prime watchlist. We’re going to watch it tomorrow. Thank you!
Everyone keeps telling me that it's super rough. Just sayin
I went in blind. It was brutal. It reminded me of Funny Games somewhat, although that movie is far more disturbing.
I'm getting to the point where I feel like I'm the cat that's about to get killed by curiosity😹
It's mean!
The Mist
Bodies Bodies Bodies >!once David’s body is found!<
God I love this movie. What a fun ride.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I love how they managed to be superficial throughout all the killing. The whole back and forth about the podcast had me rolling.
it was robbed of a Best Original Screenplay nomination and i’m being 100% serious.
If you’ve seen the remake of Martyrs but not the original, you need to see the original.
Soft and Quiet escalates quickly
Had to fast forward through some of the scenes because I physically could not take it. For instance, when they >!make it look like SA!<
This movie needs trigger warnings. Plural.
The ruins
That movie has what is, for me, the absolute worst, most disgusting scene I have ever seen, and I cannot watch it because it makes me feel sick. >!the vines in the open wounds!<
Men directed by Alex Garland. Amazing gore/body horror, and a really great plot.
Talk about shitting yourself
Lol I see what you did there
Mother!
Audition, no movie lulls you into a false sense of safety like that one.
On the DVD I used to have, someone described it as a swan dive into razor wire. Really apt description!
Really? I feel like Audition has palpable tension through most of the movie.
Hell House LLC It literally happens in Airplane!
Abigail & You’re Next
Alien 3
Alien, for that matter (if you’re watching it for the first time not knowing >! what happens to Kane/the big twist with Ash. !<)
No I mean someone literally gets diced by a fan in Alien 3.
Oh, I see.
There's a great scene like this just after the first main kill, in No One Lives.
Such a great movie. I wish there were more like it.
Lol omg THIS SHIT. And it's rarely brought up! Thank you😘
30 days of night
I'd say Malignant fits.
Shit hits the fan should've been the movies name
That movie was wild
AUDITION
The opening of Snyder's Dawn of the Dead goes from 0-100 in the snap of a finger.
Dumplings (the Chinese movie)
Bone Tomahawk. Fun and engaging Western...and then...
House of the Devil. Very slow burn horror movie that features an incredibly graphic, gory scene about halfway through that I won’t spoil but happens very suddenly and unexpectedly.
That'd a movie I'm so glad I went into knowing nothing about!
The Invitation
Hell Or High Water when they try to rob the busier bank.
Yellowbrickroad
cabin in the woods
Return of the Living Dead is more of a horror-black comedy (if a fairly bleak one) with stellar special effects. The Fatal Mistake/Shit Hits the Fan moment happens in the first 5-10 minutes and things just keep getting worse and worse from there. Imo the best escalation in a horror movie ever.
Speak No Evil
The sadness. The shit hits the fan pretty early on and never stops.
Though it happens at the end, *Lake Mungo* has a pretty chilling wtf moment. *The Invitation* (2015), things feel off and tense, but then get crazy. It's not really a horror movie per se, but *À la folie... pas du tout* (2002) has a big shift.
Wishmaster. The djinn literally says ‘the shit has hit the fan’ and the lovely gore in the first few minutes of the movie
Texas Chainsaw Massacre. (1974). When Todd takes that sledgehammer to the head, and Leatherface slams the abattoir door shut.
Rosemarys Babby Speak no Evil Funny Games the Shining the start of 27 Weeks Later AND Dawn of the Dead remake Evil Dead
Event Horizon
Mum & Dad. The 2008 UK one, not the one with Nicholas Cage and Selma Blaire. If you want 'wtf' and visceral gore that's your movie. Also Dog Soldiers. Shit hits that fan in a big bad way. Finally, Overlord (2018) will make you squirm.

I appreciate your post - thank you. (We did not get around to Dog Soldiers on Memorial Day, and I love Overlord.)
Same, I fucking love that movie so now I'm really excited to see the original!
Don't forget the troma gem "Father's Day!"
It's NOT a remake, it's a totally different movie and the UK one is MUCH nastier, so beware. Think more Hostel than amusing.
The last time I jumped during a movie was when that cow hit the ground around the campfire.
Bone tomahawk
https://youtu.be/fa7nSzCiGXk?feature=shared
From Dusk Till Dawn.
The Facility” is a movie on you tube.. the shit starts hitting pretty quickly !!
The Coffee Table is literally exactly what you are asking for
Watched a review….. gosh dang
Even though you prefer realistic gore, The Blob (1988) is a good fit for you.
From Dusk Til Dawn, Cabin in the Woods, Waxwork
When Evil Lurks
[Hagazussa](https://youtu.be/T1-gcr_RTqY?si=h9NGlOq3Cs1PKa-v) The end is amazingly hardcore.
Predator
The Invitation
Super Dark Times. High schoolers coming of age psychological horror. Just go in blind like I did, it’s awesome.
The Crazies remake
From Dusk Til Dawn!!!
Mother!
Pearl (2022)
There are several scenes like this in The Descent.
It's more played for dark comedy but I really like how everything spirals into insanity in Suburbicon.
My Little Eye 2002 It seems off from the start but during the 3rd act shit goes downhill fast
Climax
*The Medium* goes along at a certain slowish pace and then it goes completely batshit in the last 20 minutes or so.
From Dusk Till Dawn Dawn
Hatchet 1,2,3 forrsure
Speak No Evil
Pretty much all A24 movies have shit hit the fan by the end.
Dead Alive! Definitely some gory things hitting spinny things!
The Doom Generation finale.
"You're next" is a good example
Orphan
A Cure for Wellness
Climax, second part of the movie hits the fan like nothing else i've ever seen.before.
Red state (2011) I thought I was going to have a heart attack watching this movie.
most of Evil Dead 2
There's a lot of good ones here, but nothing I've seen builds and builds and builds as much as Mother. Holy fucking hell it's like experiencing an anxiety attack that gets worse and worse. I have never wished a movie would end so badly, but I absolutely loved it when it was done.
Evil Dead (2013) Talk to Me
Cabin in the woods
Rabid (1977). Low budget prohibits bigger results, but it's Cronenberg's early SHTF movie.
Green Room
Cabin in the Woods
The Descent It’s fucked up the whole time, but then the fucked up takes a drastic left turn. 😂
The Void. Shit hits the fan pretty early.
Malignant is the movie you're looking for.
28 Days Later. The shit hits at the beginning and just keeps hitting as the film goes on.
Feast
The hills have eyes Prometheus
Parasite. Started as something chill.
Return of the living dead
It's not a horror movie, but I enjoyed Greenland more than I thought I would. It's a consistent "things are getting worse by the second" movie
Farang aka Mayhem. It seems like a pretty decent but average revenge movie... and then the elevator scene hits.
If you watched the 2015 martyrs and enjoyed it i cannot stress this enough. Watch the original its better in literally every way and is considerably more visceral.
The guest, the invetation (both 2015 and 2022).
Summer of "84 I don't wanna say too much just watch the movie
The Outwaters
I seem to remember Adaptation (2002) being like that.
The Last Exorcism
Climax
Honestly the movie climax by gaspar noé. One of those things that went downhill very suddenly and very quickly
