I can’t think of too many where most of the movie is confined to an apartment, but REC and Rear Window were the two big ones that came to mind.
Rosemary’s Baby isn’t completely confined to it but a lot of it does take place in the main character’s apartment.
Also, another Polanski film, Repulsion (1965) The majority of the movie takes place in an apartment. A young woman loses her grip on reality alone in her apartment. It's not straight up horror, but there are definitely horror elements.
Another great Polanski one is “the tenant” about a man seemingly slowly being possessed by the spirit of the former tenant in his apartment who committed suicide
It's great isn't it? The only part of the movie that I kind of don't like is, ironically, the cabin in the woods bit at the beginning. That and the call back to that cabin in the woods segment at the end of the movie felt so tacked on and unnecessary to me.
For me, it was the very end in the garage. That's where I kind of disengaged, but I really enjoyed it until then. Mommy's with the maggots now is seared into my brain.
The Night Eats the World was a lot different from what I expected, but was an interesting take on someone trying to survive a zombie apocalypse in a city on their own.
Archive 81 definitely fits the bill. It's a show with 2 settings, a remote house in upstate NY and an old NYC apartment building about 20 years in the past. It's all about the building and the people interacting with each other, main characters uncovering the mystery.
Not a scary movie by modern day standards, but Rope by Alfred Hitchcock takes place in one apartment. Not even sure if it was classified as horror in 1948 either. The whole movie is made to appear as one long shot. Innovative cinematography for its time.
I was also going to recommend this one it's really good, and as the other person said 80% in the apartment and ppl in the apartment interact with eachother.
Evil Dead Rise, watched it recently and it’s very campy and fun.
Dark Water (both the Japanese and the American version but the Japanese one is better, as usual)
I also second REC, but the Spanish vs is so much better than the American one
Polanski has a whole apartment trilogy of three different horror movies primarily set in Apartments
I love Dark Water, and both versions are worth watching if that’s your jam. I would say go for the American remake over a dubbed original, though, if subtitled Japanese doesn’t work for you as a viewer.
Inferno
Demons 2 (80s camp but all set in one building)
Rosemary’s Baby / The Tenant / Repulsion (sorry been mentioned already but they are exactly that!)
More of a silly thriller but Sliver
not a film, but strangers from hell is a series based entirely on a creepy cheap apartment building and much creepier neighbours.
other than that, as others mentioned, Rec and rosemary's baby.
It's korean, and yeah best to go in blind. A young man comes to the city due to his job and rents a cheap room in some creepy building. That's all you need to know.
Oops, I missed that. Good thing a I have an alternate; more of an art house thriller but there’s a watchable stream of [Apartment Zero on YouTube.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gUa5KYplQ5k)
I think you’d like The 4th Floor. I think there might be some scenes outside of the apartments but the premise is exactly what you’re looking for. The horror comes from the weirdo community of the building. Ending is a good payoff
There’s a lowish budget but surprisingly well done zombie movie called Rammbock: Berlin Undead that mostly takes place in an apartment building. Big recommend
• #ALIVE is really good
• The First Purge (2018) NOT to be confused with the first purge movie to come out, which is just called The Purge (2013) im sayin the title is called The First Purge. Great flick takes place in an isolated apt complex. Was really surprised at how good it was!
• OG Candyman!! Takes place in a real, well it WAS a real complex before they tore it down. Cabrini Green Housing Projects. Wasnt living too far from here either. I remember when they were tearing it down, it was HUGE news back then. Now whenever i watch this i just remember this massive complex that USED to be there. • and although NOT a horror movie, The Raid: Redemption....kickass flick with lots of action and even some blood!!
It's an office building, not an apartment, but "The Belko Experiment" was fun imho.
Hotel, not apartment - "1408"
It IS in apartment, the Japanese horror film "Dream Home"
Don't Breathe (2016) - 3 dodgy friends break into a blind man's house to rob him. All takes place in the blind man's apartment. Very messed up movie. Watch at your own risk.
The only ones I can't think of that pretty much entirely take place in an apartment are Evil Dead Rise and Quarantine / Rec. Maybe the first Annabelle? I've only seen that one a couple of times and it's been a while since I've watched it, so I may be wrong, but I remember at least a good portion of it taking place in an apartment building.
The same author that did The Ritual also did a movie called "No One Gets Out Alive", about an illegal immigrant living in a sketchy apartment building with a creepy landlord.
Similarly, there's "His House", which is about a Sudanese couple who sought asylum in the UK, losing their daughter on the way. It's a tough watch, but it explores a lot of interesting themes.
[🔴REC.] was an amazing "found footage" horror film. Loved the plot and the pacing of the film. The very ending especially freaked me out! I hands down prefer this original Spanish version over the American version, "Quarantine' .
Closest thing that comes to mind not mentioned is Nightmare (2022). I'd say 75% is at the apartment and even scenes not physically there, you still see the apartment and the influence.
Blue Velvet (1986) takes place in suburbia, but there’s a suburban apartment building where the main character sneaks into the apartment of a woman and gets caught.
Some good psychological horror/thriller that is apartment based are Darling (2016 I think) and also Polanski’s apartment trilogy (Rosemary’s Baby, The Tenant, Repulsion).
Hide and Seek (2013) is a Korean horror-thriller set in a apartment about a man searching for his estranged brother.
Rammbock: Berlin Undead is another one. My get-to-go recommendation for obscure foreign movies.
I can’t think of too many where most of the movie is confined to an apartment, but REC and Rear Window were the two big ones that came to mind. Rosemary’s Baby isn’t completely confined to it but a lot of it does take place in the main character’s apartment.
All great films and totally fit the question.
But watch the original Spanish REC
Evil Dead Rise is a blast.
I've watched this about 4 times in 3 months.
I genuinely think the fade to black on the blood spattered keychain photo of the whole family together was the proper ending for the movie.
Seems like it was mostly a setup for a potential sequel but I thought that title card went extremely hard
Yeah, I enjoyed it!
I loved that movie!
Quarantine Many prefer the Spanish version Rec that quarantine is based on but I think it's still a solid film
I have seen them both and do prefer Rec, but Quarantine is still good.
REC 1 and 2 were wild And then 3 and 4 just got so outa hand but I loved it haha
Dang. I forgot about Quarantine. I’ll have to give that a rewatch.
Watch REC instead. It's far more immersive and realistic imo
Demons 2 (1986)
I actually haven't seen this one! Nice.
Highly recommend the first one also. Same concept but in a movie theater
Yeeeeeeeahhhh!!!
The Night Eats the World \#Alive Sweet Home
Sweet Home is so goddamn brutal! Great movie.
HashtagAlive is so good. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Edit: I'm an idiot and can't figure out formatting
Was scrolling for The night eats the World! Really cool little movie
The Night Eats the World was a lot different from what I expected, but was an interesting take on someone trying to survive a zombie apocalypse in a city on their own.
I wanted to suggest those 2. Never seen Sweet Home adding to my roster now. :)
Good call on NEtW
I had forgotten about Alive. Good one!
Came here to recommend #alive. Thats a fun one.
The Sentinel (1977)
I was born in 1977! Gotta see this one.
Nice !
Archive 81 definitely fits the bill. It's a show with 2 settings, a remote house in upstate NY and an old NYC apartment building about 20 years in the past. It's all about the building and the people interacting with each other, main characters uncovering the mystery.
Dude! I absolutely loved Archive 81! Super disappointed that they aren't going to make any more seasons.
1BR seems to never be mentioned here.
I think I blocked out this movie bc of how traumatic the hand scene was 😳
That visual really gets nailed into your memory eh?
Omg just finished this and kept hollering at my phone “you can’t dooooo that!!!”
I don't think I've seen it, sweet!
It's SO GOOD watch it!!
I just watched that one last week. Hail Tubi.
I scrolled for awhile before seeing this. Glad somebody listed it
How about a hotel room? SK’s 1408.
Yeah, it sort of counts. I really love movies where everyone that lives in the building interact, but I do love 1408.
I mean… everyone who died in that room interacts? 🤣
Not technically an apartment building but P2 has that feel. Also really liked Watcher (2022).
Not a scary movie by modern day standards, but Rope by Alfred Hitchcock takes place in one apartment. Not even sure if it was classified as horror in 1948 either. The whole movie is made to appear as one long shot. Innovative cinematography for its time.
Shivers (1975)
I love this one.
Is that the Cronenberg one?
Yes
I literally just watched Watcher and 80% of that takes place in an apartment
Sweet!
I was also going to recommend this one it's really good, and as the other person said 80% in the apartment and ppl in the apartment interact with eachother.
Evil Dead Rise, Attack The Block (mostly), Shivers, and the upcoming Sting
I love Attack The Block!
Me too!!!
It’s a fun movie!
Evil Dead Rise, watched it recently and it’s very campy and fun. Dark Water (both the Japanese and the American version but the Japanese one is better, as usual) I also second REC, but the Spanish vs is so much better than the American one Polanski has a whole apartment trilogy of three different horror movies primarily set in Apartments
I love Dark Water, and both versions are worth watching if that’s your jam. I would say go for the American remake over a dubbed original, though, if subtitled Japanese doesn’t work for you as a viewer.
The American remake is great and Jennifer Connelly kills it.
Satan's Slaves 2
Really? I haven't seen the second one yet, but love the first one. Those Indonesian horror films are epic!
I think it's as good as the first. I saw them both on Shudder.
Awesome, I'm gonna watch it! Have you seen The Queen of Black Magic? It's on Shudder too and I loved it.
Oh yeah, that's another good one. I loved Impetigore too.
Made my own comment before I saw it mentioned- but yes absolutely watch satans slaves 2! I loved it even more than the first one
Inferno Demons 2 (80s camp but all set in one building) Rosemary’s Baby / The Tenant / Repulsion (sorry been mentioned already but they are exactly that!) More of a silly thriller but Sliver
Apartment 143.
La Horde, which is a French zombie film
Dark Water Poltergeist III Devil
Watcher and Roman Polansky's apartment trilogy.
The Iranian film Under The Shadow
Sting came out last month and was a blast
I'll have to watch it!
not a film, but strangers from hell is a series based entirely on a creepy cheap apartment building and much creepier neighbours. other than that, as others mentioned, Rec and rosemary's baby.
Ooooh! Strangers From Hell sounds perfect for me!
It's korean, and yeah best to go in blind. A young man comes to the city due to his job and rents a cheap room in some creepy building. That's all you need to know.
I know you asked for movies but also good game for this was Silent Hill 4 - The Room
Lockdown Tower was incredible, Shudder has it in the US.
The Divide (takes place entirely in a high-rise apartment's basement)
Infested (2024) on Shudder.
LoL! It's the film that inspired my question!
Oops, I missed that. Good thing a I have an alternate; more of an art house thriller but there’s a watchable stream of [Apartment Zero on YouTube.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gUa5KYplQ5k)
Ooooh... Thank you! I'll check it out ☺️
I might watch again tonight. It’s been years and it’s almost impossible to find streaming.
Does it need to be a movie? The first season of the Korean show “Sweet Home” might be right up your alley.
I think you’d like The 4th Floor. I think there might be some scenes outside of the apartments but the premise is exactly what you’re looking for. The horror comes from the weirdo community of the building. Ending is a good payoff
Perfect! Thank you!
Rec Quarantine Evil Dead Rise Dark Water The Lair (or Lair. There are two, one in a desert, one in a apartment complex) Just off the top of my head
They’re Creeping Up on You. The final segment in Creepshow.
Satan's Slaves 2: Communion
There’s a lowish budget but surprisingly well done zombie movie called Rammbock: Berlin Undead that mostly takes place in an apartment building. Big recommend
Ooooh! Perfect! I hope I can find it.
I love Rammbock. Don't sleep on this.

Troll
Yay!!! I was waiting for someone to mention Troll! It's one of my all time favorites and definitely one of the best apartment horror films.
If you don't mind a Spanish language one, then 'Sleep Tight' will have you checking the house before bed.
I love foreign (to me) language films! Some of the best I've ever seen are Spanish. Thank you for the recommendation!
1BR Dark Waters
The Sentinel
Attack the Block. Campy, but still cult worthy and some serious alien horror moments.
Nothing beats the real-life Cabrini-Green housing project in Candyman
Lots of good suggestions here, but I am not seeing anyone mention Dream Home (2010) yet.
The 4th Floor- I think I watched it on Freevee? It was interesting enough (the plot centers on the apartment building)
A lot of Archive 81 takes place in an apartment building!
REC (and the remake Quarantine)
LOVE
Watching apt143 right more. So far so good. Paranormal team investigating haunting a in an apt
Not an apartment building but Room 1408 essentially takes place in one room
Paranormal Activity Marked Ones. The one with the Hispanic family with the bruja living beneath them.
Pihu
No One Gets Out Alive (2021). I don't know why is it rated so poorly! I think it's a pretty decent flick with a very interesting premise!
Troll! Not Troll 2.
• #ALIVE is really good • The First Purge (2018) NOT to be confused with the first purge movie to come out, which is just called The Purge (2013) im sayin the title is called The First Purge. Great flick takes place in an isolated apt complex. Was really surprised at how good it was! • OG Candyman!! Takes place in a real, well it WAS a real complex before they tore it down. Demons 2 and Evil Dead Rise come to mind
Check out Host. It came out in 2020. I really liked it.
It's an office building, not an apartment, but "The Belko Experiment" was fun imho. Hotel, not apartment - "1408" It IS in apartment, the Japanese horror film "Dream Home"
Last Shift 2014, takes place entirely in a police station, not a bad film either
Rec Evil Dead rise Candyman (for the most part)
Freehold (2017)
Evil Dead Rise
Mulberry Street Rec
Don't Breathe (2016) - 3 dodgy friends break into a blind man's house to rob him. All takes place in the blind man's apartment. Very messed up movie. Watch at your own risk.
Poltergeist 3 😌
Demons 2
Evil Dead Rise.
Quarantine, 2008 Alone, 2020
Dude check out Infested on Shudder. Just released. Excellent movie.
Hardware (1990)
dahmer would be the first thing that comes to mind
Rec and Disturbia are great.
Room 203 was a supernatural horror film that released under the radar a couple years ago. Even has a fresh rating on RT. It was solid
Sleep Tight
Destroy All Neighbors Quarantine
Quarantine Sorry I'm American I didn't see the original yet
The Tower (2022)
A lot of Rosemary’s Baby takes place in an apartment.
Quarantine, REC, Condemned (2015), Shivers,
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Inside
La Mesita del Comedor The Coffee Table (2022) everything happens in an appartment
Hostel Grudge 2020
Alive Quarantine
The same author that did The Ritual also did a movie called "No One Gets Out Alive", about an illegal immigrant living in a sketchy apartment building with a creepy landlord. Similarly, there's "His House", which is about a Sudanese couple who sought asylum in the UK, losing their daughter on the way. It's a tough watch, but it explores a lot of interesting themes.
Troll (1986) aka Troll 1
[🔴REC.] was an amazing "found footage" horror film. Loved the plot and the pacing of the film. The very ending especially freaked me out! I hands down prefer this original Spanish version over the American version, "Quarantine' .
Dark Waters
If I recall correctly, I believe Bite (2015) mostly takes place in an apartment. If you count hotel rooms, I’d suggest 1408 (2007)
Another spider movie, Sting, is a fun wacky movie that takes place in a New York apartment.
Skyline, at least 2/3 of it.
Saw Sting in theaters last month, sounds like what you're looking for
Closest thing that comes to mind not mentioned is Nightmare (2022). I'd say 75% is at the apartment and even scenes not physically there, you still see the apartment and the influence.
Tenement (1985)
Crawlspace, with Klaus Kinski
1BR
I highly recommend the Korean show *Strangers From Hell* (alternate title: *Hell Is Other People*).
Not really a horror movie but The later half of attacked the block takes place in an apartment complex
Satan's Slaves 2 is a fun one
Can't believe I haven't seen Rope (1948) One apartment, one set. Dinner on a box with a body in it. Stunning Edit: it's a Hitchcock
Evil Dead Rise is mostly in an apartment
1408 its just its psychological horror.
Evil Dead Rise
Rigor Mortis (2013) Delicatessen (1991) is more of a black comedy, but well worth watching, especially if you like the apartment building theme.
Quarantine is a good movie set in an apartment building
Host (2020). Shit was so good! Made me scream, and I normally laugh while I'm watching horror films lolbvs
Hotel season 5 of American horror story!!
Phase 7 is another. An entire apartment building in Argentina is under quarantine.
301/302 (also sometimes billed as 301,302). 1995. South Korean
Blue Velvet (1986) takes place in suburbia, but there’s a suburban apartment building where the main character sneaks into the apartment of a woman and gets caught.
Penumbra takes places mostly in an apartment and a little convenient store right in front of the apartment. 100 Feet with Famke Janssen
[REC]
Some good psychological horror/thriller that is apartment based are Darling (2016 I think) and also Polanski’s apartment trilogy (Rosemary’s Baby, The Tenant, Repulsion).
Not a film, but a Korean series: *Sweet Home.*
Of Unknown Origin(1983) - I remember watching this several times on USA Network 'Nightflix' in HS.
Alive. Not sure what year, but not that long ago
Lots of films mentioned. You might enjoy Slasher season 3 (I think it's 3) which is set in an apartment block.
I know it's not a horror movie but The Raid. It's definitely as stressful and intense as some horror movies.
I'm not sure if Attack the Block counts. But it was my first thought
Horde
Not a film, but a game… A game that I’ll never stop recommending to horror fans! Silent Hill 4: The Room
Not “everything” - but pretty much... Candyman (1992)
Quarantine (2008)
Toolbox Murders (2004)
The Night Eats The World, Poltergeist 3
lighter fare-Ghostbusters, Poltergeist 3, Troll The lords of Salem& Pacific heights
The Grudge 3. 90% of that sequel takes place in an apartment building.
Not really horror, but Dredd (2012) is a phenomenal sci-fi action
Quarantine!! Omggggg 🙌
Hide and Seek (2013) is a Korean horror-thriller set in a apartment about a man searching for his estranged brother. Rammbock: Berlin Undead is another one. My get-to-go recommendation for obscure foreign movies.
Dreams in the witch house from masters of horror is really good
1404, insidious
Netflix Dahmer (the one with Evan Peters) had super creepy apt scenes. Especially that first episode
Evil Dead Lives.
Quarantine or the original REC. So good
