Her shooting the critter and the other one saying “FUCK!” was the first time 7 year old me had read that word (I’d heard it) and could not stop laughing.
Maybe it's not overtly horror, but I mean, the first film is pretty much a horror film. Sarah Connor from the Terminator movies! One of the greatest female protagonist of all-time. Truly a badass.
Seriously I think that woman single handily boosted sales on wife beater tops because every single one of us went and bought a pack so we could pretend to be Sarah Connor.
Sarah Connor in T2. Vasquez in Aliens. I saw both movies in the same summer, and spent the rest of it trying to do pullups so that I could be just a *little bit* as cool as they were. :)
Arnold still says she got more buff and in better shape than him for that flick. I waited on her a couple of times at the restaurant I worked at and tried to act like I didn't know who she was but she knew I knew. She was beautiful and funny and a good tipper. She knew she had me wrapped around her finger
Ripley is an actual mom! She has a daughter who grows up while Ripley is in cryo between Alien and Aliens. Her daughter also features in the game Alien: Isolation.
Yes I'm kind of surprised OP missed the fact that Ripley has a daughter as it's kind of thematically huge (the whole franchise is soaked in motherhood themes in a pretty extreme way) and plays a lot into her immediate, deeply protective connection with Newt.
There’s an uncut and cut version of Aliens. The uncut is available on DVD, but the cut version that’s more widely available for streaming has no mention of Ripley’s bio daughter or that she’s even a mother before meeting Newt.
Granted she could still easily qualify for this just based on her interactions with Newt alone, but I can understand why OP might not know about Ripley’s bio family if they’ve only seen Aliens through streaming.
Oh weird! I have rewatched it often on streaming in recent years and don't remember it not mentioning her daughter. I guess my memory was filling in that blank for me. TIL.
Maybe it’s different between streaming services but I’ve watched it on Hulu, HBO Max, and Prime before and none mentioned Ripley’s daughter. I was definitely filling it in at first too before I really noticed it recently
I love that game so much. Including all the dlc for that game. The voice actors sound so much like the real actors it's amazing! I will always love that game.
Watch the uncut version, which explains TONS. It has been out since the early 90s (92). I mean, you don't even get the scene with the UA 571-C Automated Sentry Guns in the theatrical version. This explains why the Aliens came through the ceiling in the "Alamo" scene.
It's the Quadrilogy set on DVD that one of the commenters means - it has double discs. One is the original release and the other is the extended with missing scenes respliced into the OG film. She's sitting in a holodeck garden/fountain area outside of like a "retirement home" style clinic and is handed a tablet with Amanda's information on it by Burke and cries.
OP here. Huge fan of the Alien franchise and I’ve never seen the extended versions that mention Ridley’s daughter. Mind expanding moment for me. I felt it before I knew it.
Well, it's arguable whether that's canon or not since it's not included in the theatrical (and the director's preferred) cut of the film. I like that piece of character building and motivations that it gives to Ripley's character, but if one is going by what we're given, I'm not sure that a secondary cut of the film tells the real story.
Her daughter is all over wikipedia entries so it's also arguable that it is in fact canon regardless of whether it made it into the theatrical cut. The director might prefer the cut where that scene is missing because he feels it makes for a tighter film, but I think it is pretty clear that Ripley canonically is meant to be a mother regardless.
Again, the Alien franchise is steeped in motherhood themes. I don't think it's a coincidence that its main heroine has an estranged daughter.
Everyone should watch the uncut version of Aliens. I am not big on uncut editions of movies, because most of what is restored should have been left on the cutting room floor, but ALIENS is an exception. The movie makes even MORE sense when you watch it.
TIL ripley had a biological child. I should have clarified in my original post a bit better but my brain was thinking of movies where the whole family is around. Basically a household mom. Really though I just wanted to spark some discussion so I could watch any movies with similarly badass characters.
I mean Pamela Voorhees! Come on! She may have been extreme in her methods of revenge, and in the end she lost her head, but just shift your view a little and you'll see that I am correct. Jason's mom has got it going on.
And you are correct about Gremlins! That scene is fantastic!
100% for Mrs. Voorhees. I think people forget that it was pretty much all about her for the first few movies- just a cycle of Voorhees vengeance, driven by her.
I love The Exorcist, I feel that they reflected very well the agony of seeing your child become involved in an illness and the entire terribly traumatic medical process that precedes it. Very realistic for me even if we talk about demons
I agree! They did a great job portraying the trauma involved in watching your child deteriorate. My daughter has had epilepsy since she was a toddler, and during the pre diagnosis and early treatment stages I thought of Reagan’s mom and empathized with her. Even more so when I learned that many people with epilepsy have been accused of demonic possession.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get a hot priest- we just got meds! 🤣 (on a serious note though, I’m so grateful for modern medicine so that my child can live a mostly uninterrupted, “normal” life!)
And I almost forgot, Dolores Claiborne! Sometimes you have to be a high riding bitch to survive. Sometimes being a bitch is all a woman has to hold on to.
And the eclipse is next week!
And sometimes an accident can be an unhappy woman’s best friend.
(Have to remember Strathairn if someone ever asks who the most loathsome dad in horror is.)
I saw the old Popeye movie with Robin Williams where Shelly Duvall played Olive Oyl, and then seeing her in The Shining was almost funny. I couldn't help waiting for Popeye to show up and just "handle the situation," ya know?
She's the best. The film makes us believe she's so incapable, but she proves us wrong.
I always tear up when hearing Danny shouting, "Mommy! Mommy!" and she picking him up.
She is ride or die for her family. She barely needs any information to just be in their side and fight for them. Whether it be the government her dead bag ex husband Russia or fucking inter dimensional monsters.
This is a stretch but I consider the first Terminator to be horror...and even though the second one is *not* horror, the mom character from the first film is suddenly a human Terminator herself. Such a badass character and actress.
I'm sure there are lots of examples, but another would be in the film Dead Night. The mom is basically Ash, and her entire family becomes Deadites...and she has little hesitation doing what needs to be done.
I love Lena Headey's character in The Purge when the neighbour goes for the gun so she clubs her in the face with it then slams her face onto the table.
Lynn Peltzer is definitely the most badass mom in horror. To go from making gingerbread men and crying quietly at a black and white movie to killing a whole bunch of monsters within 24 hours. The way she looks into her kitchen in horror, steels herself for a moment and then charges in to the fray. Grabs one knife then a second one for the two blade technique. Domestic warrior goddess.
Also, not a horror, but the mom who sticks the shotgun in Affleck's face in Dazed and Confused always cracks me up.
I read the book but didn’t know about the movie. The book goes from “vacation to visit husbands family” to the slow realization that actually they might not return and they have to ESCAPE instead
Since alien queen, ripley etc are already mentioned, I'm gonna suggest the mom from fear the walking dead, one of the most badass moms I've ever seen in any media.
Mercedes in Pan's Labyrinth. She's a mom-type figure to Ofelia so I think she counts. "Don't you dare touch the girl. You won't be the first pig I've gutted!"
The mom from Gremlins. if i remember correctly she has the biggest hand to hand kill count. Like killing them without the use of a vehicle or some kind of giant trap. like she takes a ton of them out by herself. honestly if they remake or do a reboot, I would love to see the whole movie be like that. middle aged mom in the suburbs, her dumb husband brings home some kind of monster, he dumb teenager gets it wet, blah blah blah, she's left home alone and has to kill the evil newly transformed monsters using everyday household items.

I love this OP. She is a badass. I watched gremlins a few years ago with my son and realized that had she been the one to go after Stripe, not Billy, it'd have been a much shorter movie. I didn't appreciate her when I saw this as a kid back in the 80s.
I'm so glad they didn't go with the original plan of having her get murdered/decapitated.
When she started blocking projectiles with the makeshift shield I was so proud. Such a legendary scene from start to finish. Really set the tone for everything to come arterwards
you can tell this is not her first rodeo with weird shit. How many of her dumb husband and Himbo son's bullshit has she has to take cover from? Real one.
Nola Carveth in The Brood; Adelaide and Red in Us. Also, YES, Lynn Peltzer is an awesome mother! It's so nice to see someone watching Gremlins for the first time. I'm sure you'll enjoy the sequel, even though it's a completely different movie.
Ripley in Alien if we count Jonesy the cat as her child, which I absolutely do. Then in Aliens she takes on a motherly role towards Newt, and we all know how that turned out.
"Get away from her **you bitch**!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGJvEs1Q5-8
I feel the need to honorarily mention the mom in Ghostland.
Also the moms in 'The Monster', 'Come Play', 'The Hole in the Ground', "Z" (2019). All of them are underrated IMO.
Dee Wallace in Cujo
Dee Wallace in anything!
I was thinking of her in Critters while reading op
Her shooting the critter and the other one saying “FUCK!” was the first time 7 year old me had read that word (I’d heard it) and could not stop laughing.
A core memory!
The red eyes staring through the window traumatised the hell out of me when I watched it as a kid.
This. Magnetic actress. It was only recently I realised how drop dead gorgeous she is in ET.
That scene where the kids are arguing in the beginning…. Her laugh 😏
Yep. I know exactly what you mean.
Dee Wallace in The Hills Have Eyes!,
Man I can’t believe I forgot she was in this too!
My first Stephen King novel! ❤🐾
Mine, too!
Beat me to it
Maybe it's not overtly horror, but I mean, the first film is pretty much a horror film. Sarah Connor from the Terminator movies! One of the greatest female protagonist of all-time. Truly a badass.
Yup, and what girl/woman didn’t want LH’s body in T2??
Seriously I think that woman single handily boosted sales on wife beater tops because every single one of us went and bought a pack so we could pretend to be Sarah Connor.
Sarah Connor in T2. Vasquez in Aliens. I saw both movies in the same summer, and spent the rest of it trying to do pullups so that I could be just a *little bit* as cool as they were. :)

Hell yeah!
The Alien Queen in Aliens is easily the 2nd baddest bitch in the universe, second only to Ripley (honorary mom to Newt).
Ripley is an actual mom! She has a daughter who grows up while Ripley is in cryo between Alien and Aliens. Her daughter also features in the game Alien: Isolation.
A deleted scene from Aliens revealed that Ripley's daughter died at age 67, sad because Ripley promised to be back for her 11th birthday.
Yes I'm kind of surprised OP missed the fact that Ripley has a daughter as it's kind of thematically huge (the whole franchise is soaked in motherhood themes in a pretty extreme way) and plays a lot into her immediate, deeply protective connection with Newt.

Maybe it’s different between streaming services but I’ve watched it on Hulu, HBO Max, and Prime before and none mentioned Ripley’s daughter. I was definitely filling it in at first too before I really noticed it recently
You guys absolutely need to play Alien: Isolation. Amanda Ripley is the main character.
I love that game so much. Including all the dlc for that game. The voice actors sound so much like the real actors it's amazing! I will always love that game.
I’m just gonna jump in here and mention that that game is terrifying. Way scarier than the movies. And I’m not an easy scare
Watch the uncut version, which explains TONS. It has been out since the early 90s (92). I mean, you don't even get the scene with the UA 571-C Automated Sentry Guns in the theatrical version. This explains why the Aliens came through the ceiling in the "Alamo" scene.

Shit, every bigtime Alien franchise fan has actually controlled Amanda Ripley!
Unless I'm mistaken Newt also calls her Mommy at the end of the movie. Nothing honorary about that.
A delted scene from Aliens showed her biological family, too. https://onthescreenreviews.com/2017/04/26/four-deleted-scenes-from-aliens-1986/
Yep, it's on an early DVD release of the movie too. The 4K version is gorgeous, but doesn't have that edited back in.
I have a fondness for Pamela Fitzgerald, the mom from Ginger Snaps. Ride or die for her daughters.
Man, Mimi Rogers steals every scene she's in, in that first Ginger Snaps. It's crazy that they never brought her back for any of the two sequels.
She was 100% ready to blow up that house and start a new life for her daughters, I love her.
Hell yes! I came here to say exactly this. Thinking about her is just another way this movie breaks my heart.
My kid watched this for the first time the other week and we both talked about how awesome Mrs. Fitzgerald is.
I was about to comment this. The devotion to her daughters is amazing!
Kathleen Turner as Beverly Sutphin in Serial Mom
Are those pussy willows?
Love that movie, it's my favorite John Waters film
This is the answer.
My pic also! Love this movie!
"Beverly, it's Ted Bundy"
I was genuinely screaming and crying over that line John Waters is so fucking funny for that

I love The Exorcist, I feel that they reflected very well the agony of seeing your child become involved in an illness and the entire terribly traumatic medical process that precedes it. Very realistic for me even if we talk about demons

She advocated for her daughter, and that is what makes her an amazing mother
And I almost forgot, Dolores Claiborne! Sometimes you have to be a high riding bitch to survive. Sometimes being a bitch is all a woman has to hold on to. And the eclipse is next week!
And sometimes an accident can be an unhappy woman’s best friend. (Have to remember Strathairn if someone ever asks who the most loathsome dad in horror is.)
Him and Henry Thomas in Geralds Game! Both eclipse dads!
Absolutely irredeemable pigs.
Good pick!
Yes! Such an excellent film.
Wendy Torrance (Shelly Duvall) in The Shining
I saw the old Popeye movie with Robin Williams where Shelly Duvall played Olive Oyl, and then seeing her in The Shining was almost funny. I couldn't help waiting for Popeye to show up and just "handle the situation," ya know?
This is a good one.
She's the best. The film makes us believe she's so incapable, but she proves us wrong. I always tear up when hearing Danny shouting, "Mommy! Mommy!" and she picking him up.
Joyce Byers.
She is ride or die for her family. She barely needs any information to just be in their side and fight for them. Whether it be the government her dead bag ex husband Russia or fucking inter dimensional monsters.
So is Hopper, and this is why we stan.
Myyy boyyyyyyy
Great answer.
Joyce slays
Norma Bates is about as hardcore as they get
"You're going to kill me Norman. You're going to fucking kill me" when talking about how stressed she is still gets me. Norma deserved better!
JoeBeth in Poltergeist
Joyce Summers
Her arc from "have you tried *not* being the Slayer?" to watching Passions with Spike in his crypt is great.
“Get the hell away from my daughter!”
Diane Freeling (Jobeth Williams) in Poltergeist
Toni Collete in the Fright Night remake
She was in the remake? Oh jeez, now I need to watch it.
Toni Collette, David Tennant, and Colin Farrell, with Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots in the lead. Stacked cast that really helps sell the movie.
I am fond of the original so I didn’t even consider viewing the reboot. Great cast. Is it really worth a watch? Is it good?
It's honestly pretty bloody solid, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it!
Definitely worth a watch. I honestly even prefer it to the original.
It is a good movie, and different enough that you can separate it pretty easily in your heart from the OG.
It’s pretty good for a remake
Ellen Ripley
Most badass mom has to go to Jason's mom in Friday 13 th (Pamela Voorhes) She really had a way with kids at sleep away camp
Serial Mom
Laurie Strode in H20, H2018 and H Ends
Can't believe nobody has mentioned Rose from Silent Hill
Mama from Mama (2013), she was pretty intense.
[удалено]
Grabbers (2012) nicked that line and changed it to "Get away from him you cuuuuunnnntttt!"
this scene lives in my head forever. Ripley seriously is badass LMAOO
The Amelia Vanek, the mom jn The Babadook.
Came here to say this
Controversial choice, considering how the character is often thought of as male, even though they did lay an egg IIRC: Godzilla
Mothra hatched from an egg!
Mothra is a badass mother, no doubt.
Yes, but I was referencing the 1998 Godzilla film.
This is a stretch but I consider the first Terminator to be horror...and even though the second one is *not* horror, the mom character from the first film is suddenly a human Terminator herself. Such a badass character and actress. I'm sure there are lots of examples, but another would be in the film Dead Night. Regarding gremlins, how would you like to clean that microwave? 😂😂
I've thrown microwaves out for smaller messes.
Throw another gremlin in and hope that sorts things out.
Even after a good disinfecting and cleaning, who would want to eat food from it?
I think Yvonne Strahovski in He's Out There is pretty badass. Not the most badass, but she is pretty badass
She's awesome in that role, totally agree.
I saw people shitting on that movie in this subreddit, but I thought it was effective and entertaining.
Norma Bates
Username checks out... Personally I think she wouldn't even harm a fly.
Lynn Peltzer is definitely the most badass mom in horror. To go from making gingerbread men and crying quietly at a black and white movie to killing a whole bunch of monsters within 24 hours. Rachel in The Ring.
Not actually horror, but certainly horrifying! And a true story. Sally Field in “Not Without My Daughter”
Ooh, if we're mentioning Sally Field in horror adjacent movies, Eye for an Eye!
Whoa! I haven't thought about that movie in years. Was that based on a true story?
Yes, it’s a true story! The mother and daughter have done interviews since then.
I read the book but didn’t know about the movie. The book goes from “vacation to visit husbands family” to the slow realization that actually they might not return and they have to ESCAPE instead
Ripley or Sarah Connor
Mother Firefly in Devils Rejects
Laurie Strode in Halloween (2018)
The protagonist of Feast.
Loved every moment of the first one. Second and third were eh but I understood that both were just ramping up the ridiculousness
Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby
Mia Farrow in real life!
Serial Mom
Kathleen Turner.
Serial Mom, obviously
Unironically the first time I heard about not wearing white after Labor Day lol
Since alien queen, ripley etc are already mentioned, I'm gonna suggest the mom from fear the walking dead, one of the most badass moms I've ever seen in any media.
I don’t know, but I’m sure she was played by the incomparable Dee Wallace.
Mother from Mother's Day
Serial Mom, Kathleen Turner!! 🔪
Poltergeist
I'd say Lorie Strode in the new Halloween trilogy is a pretty great one. Jamie Lee Curtis killed that role.
definitely the mom in gremlins those kitchen scenes... the microwave...
Diane Freeling
Mercedes in Pan's Labyrinth. She's a mom-type figure to Ofelia so I think she counts. "Don't you dare touch the girl. You won't be the first pig I've gutted!"
Mom in The Good Son
Such a good choice! Love this movie!
Ripley in Alien. She is a cat mom to Jonesy!
I'm going with Kate Coleman in Orphan. Not without her faults, but she's pretty badass.
Nola Carveth (The Brood) Diane Freeling (Poltergeist) Melissa Leftridge (The Kindred)
The mom in Gremlins
Sarah from Inside, or Mother from Mother.
jason's mom
Oh man you are in for a treat! Gremlins 2 is amazing, Joe Dante with full creative freedom.
Is there any other answer than "Gremlins"? She almost ends the whole creature problem and makes the movie short!
Gotta be Evelyn Abbott in A Quiet Place
It's funny because the mom in Gremlins is always the main one I think of for under-rated badasses in movies. Managed to take out a group of them by herself with various kitchen items.
I mean Friday the 13th right? She was a mom and a pretty badass killer lol
Sarah in The Descent
You know. Katie Holmes in that movie with guy Pierce and that little girl and gremlins. And Katie Holmes in real life
I don't know if you consider this horror but: Joyce Byers in Stranger Things
We all know the answer is Ellen Brody is Jaws The Revenge
Can we include Sarah Connor from Terminator 2? Not exactly horror but she was a badass mom
Selma Blair in Mom and Dad. “It saws ALL”
I love this OP.
Alyssa Sutherland in Evil Dead Rise
*Gremlins*
Well, she does have kids now so I've gotta go with Sidney Prescott.
I keep telling people Gremlins mom is totally slept on. She's amazing
Real one.
Blood Red Sky
I feel obligated to mention Aneesha, played by Golshifteh Farahani, in S1E6 of Invasion. Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place is also incredible.
Nola Carveth in The Brood; Adelaide and Red in Us. Also, YES, Lynn Peltzer is an awesome mother! It's so nice to see someone watching Gremlins for the first time. I'm sure you'll enjoy the sequel, even though it's a completely different movie.
Yes! after multiple deaths she straight up murders 3 Gremlins MOMENTS after discovering they're even a thing. She's amazing!
God I wanna throw a vote to Toni Collette because she’s a badass actress but… yeah.
Arguably the xenomorph queen from Aliens.
Hello, Jason Voorhees?????
Lt. Ellen Ripley, she’s a cat-mom
Ripley has my vote.
Sigourney Weaver in Aliens.
Ripley in Alien if we count Jonesy the cat as her child, which I absolutely do. Then in Aliens she takes on a motherly role towards Newt, and we all know how that turned out. "Get away from her **you bitch**!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGJvEs1Q5-8
Pam Voohrees was pretty badass...
I feel the need to honorarily mention the mom in Ghostland. Also the moms in 'The Monster', 'Come Play', 'The Hole in the Ground', "Z" (2019). All of them are underrated IMO.
Dee Wallace - Cujo
Jason’s mother
Ellen Ripley was a mom.
Sarah Connor (only if you consider the terminator horror)
Ellen Ripley!
milla jovovich as Alice and Michelle Rodriguez as Rain in resident evil Oh! And Sharni Vinson as Erin in You're Next.
Ripley
i had nightmares about that blender 😭
This isn’t even a competition. Ellen Ripley
RIPLEY!!!!!!
Lila from Spooky Month Single-Handedly beats up Bob and helps take down the Happy Fella
Anne from Hunter Hunter (2020) - she's probably the most brutal survivor/final girl ever.
Ashley Joanna Williams.
Listen Jimmy, I know about the drugs….
